Fall Music Preview 2007 Video: Counting Crows

9/18/07, 9:59 am EST

Click here to watch Adam Duritz talk about Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings

Counting Crows’ fall album Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings is clearly a two-part record — the band recorded in two locations (New York and Berkeley, California) with two producers (Gil Norton and Brian Deck). Frontman Adam Duritz explains that the Saturday Nights portion is about “sin, dissolution, madness” and the somewhat redemptive Sunday Mornings explores “vacillating between numbness and grief and sorrow” as well as attempting to “figure out how to be a human being again.” “I got everything out I needed to get out,” Duritz says of writing the album. “There’s all this stuff I felt I really needed to say.” Watch Duritz discuss the making of the album, plus catch live footage of the Crows in action playing new track “Cowboy,” which Duritz says “may be the best song we’ve ever done.”

Yes, we had to “wait” past the first release date, but now we have another to look forward to!!! Counting Crows are a kick ass, kiss my ass band, for the people who love them and for the idiots who do not understand the music! I love their music and Adam’s lyrics, and they are above and beyond most minds! Great interview, Adam, and I wish I had the CD now, as I need the “Sunday Mornings” section to rebuild after the holidays! “Cowboys” is indeed just one of the CC’s great songs!!!

Its funny when people come on and say ‘how can you listen to this band’ or ‘this bloke sounds so annoying’ or everytime i hear this band i want to cut myself when ironically enough, these people are the people that sit in their rooms listening to Slipknot scream while injecting themselves with heroin! The true fact of the matter is that unlike nearly every other band in the world Druitz sings the truth, and thats why he is so gud, because he takes his experiences and puts them into words and that is why so many people can relate to him because its all real!!! Which ever knobhead said that ‘Mr.Jones and Me is cheesy is either deff or an idiot, its one of the finest songs every written and, if you must know, its about him and hismate Marty Jones sitting watching Marty’s dad play a guitar at a club callled the ‘New Amsterdam'’ try taking your life and writing about it, and spilling it out to the world……final point, if you dont like it, dont listen to it, i dont like alot of music, so i dont listen to it……..too many of you Americans are opinionated without intellegence, thankfully the majority of you are a true pleasure to know and talk to!!! My God………..they are so good to see live. One of the coolest things about living in Las Vegas is CC plays here alot. When Aug. came out thet played at the Huntridge Theatre. 700 seats old movie theatre in a shitty part of town. One of the best shows ever. Now they play by the pool at mandelay bay and there just as cool. I’m 40 now 3 kids and don’t get to shows much……but will never miss a cc show.

Jack P | 11/2/2007, 9:37 pm EST

fuck I’m excited. FUCK I’M EXCITED!
Does anyone know the official release date for the record? i’ve seen 5 or 6 different dates on the net. I hope, somehow, it’ll be tomorrow…

Adam (Beverly) | 10/28/2007, 7:45 am EST

Devoted CC fan looking forward to the next release of one of the most talented song-writers of our time.

greg | 10/12/2007, 9:53 pm EST

the first time i heard cc was in 91. i was living in the bay area… x amount of years later, and several concerts; well my love will never fade.

J-man | 10/3/2007, 10:01 pm EST

Adam Duritz is the modern day Bob Dylan and it’s unbelievable that there are dumb asses out there who can’t appreciate the beauty in his lyrics and the creativity of the entire band.

todd | 9/27/2007, 3:06 pm EST

hey u are all missing the point.this comment box has got nothing to do with the new record. it is fact a great video interview and the live footage is a bonus. enough said.peace.

Very nice post, Graham!

I can’t wait for this album to come out. As of right now, we only have 39 days, 21 hours until it’s release! Stay out of my way or I’m gonna mow you down!

:)

Graham Brown | 9/25/2007, 8:56 pm EST

Wow. I see all these haters and it just amazes me how ignorant you are. You emo-kids can say CC sucks or whatever, but I can’t tell you how many RS or Spin articles I’ve read where these wannabe bands say “oh we were definatly influnenced majorily by Adam Duritz.” These bands that have such formulated hit singles and the world wants to call them cutting edge bc they brought back 80’s synths or they’re adding a techno beat. That shit is done in ten minutes in a basement, believe me I’ve seen it. The music that CC makes is a artistic, poetic, emotional and time-consuming process. I challenge you to find a band (barring everything pre-90’s) that writes like they do. Thank you CC for being one of the very few bands left that makes meaniful, REAL music. If you think you are a musician or songwriter, you can’t go wrong by being inspired by this band. But good luck reaching that level of musicianship. The End.

kittygirl7 | 9/25/2007, 4:38 pm EST

First off, I’d like to say you guys are great. Was turned on to you during a road trip with my daughter, Jessica, through the years I have come to appreciate your music more than any 49-year old mommy would.
Last year there was a tragedy and my 25 y-o daughter Wendy died. I locked myself in the back bedroom and listened to “Hard Candy” and “Desert Life” over and over. At the time, what we had been told by police “Black and Blue” hit home. When I came to my senses and started putting two and two together I realized everything we had been told was bullshit. Wendy did not kill herself—her husband killed her. The detective on scene screwed up the investigation (he has since been demoted) and it is now an uphill battle to get things done. You see we live in a very small town, Hazelton, Idaho. We had live in the area for 10 years when Wendy died—his family had lived here forever and his family has money. The County Sheriff believes Erik killed her, the new detectives believe he killed her but since things were so f——up during the investigation———- It is coming up on the year anniversary of my baby’s death 10/24/07 and I am trying to hold it together. This ass Wendy was married to has taken my grandson and will not let us see him. Keanun, my grandbaby, lived with us a great majority of his life. Since Wendy’s death we have seen him twice, once in Nov. 17-19, 2006 and again in May 21-24 2007. The last time we say Keanun he begged me and Papa to let him stay—it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do is to take that little guy home to his dad.
If I had any faith that anyone cared I would get into more details, most people are shocked that Erik isn’t in jail when I tell and show them the evidence I have uncovered. Since the day of Wendy’s death he has refused to cooperate with officials and since May 2007 he will not return my phone calls. I have contacted a couple of attorneys and found that he is at this time with-in his right to refuse another interview—-FYI he did take a polygraph shortly after the murder and failed miserably but was let go because the initial detective thought he was too upset—he’s since refused to take another or answer any questions. I found out today that he is leaving town, I called him he did not answer and has not returned my call—I don’t expect he will.
Thanks for listening. Just wanted you to know that your music is great!!! It makes a person really feel something, whether it be happy or sad it’s wonderful.
If anyone out there has any advice for me and what direction I might go besides arguing with police to do their job I’d really appreciate it. Tractornut58@msn.com
Adam and the boys Keep Up the Great Work You’ll never know the life you’ve touched.
Sincerely,
Cindy

trotter | 9/24/2007, 3:22 pm EST

An acquired taste… would have been really easy to listen to their records once and skip to U2, REM, Stone Roses, Oasis or a Radiohead record with the extra cute hooks… fortunately I didn’t and learned that Adam Duritz is the most expressive, honest and charismatic front-man in all of Rock music, including the great bands above…. For anyone who’s ever had the ‘nads to acknowledge their mental fragility the lyrics are comfort in sound (another good band!).. Need to acquire the taste a bit then go see them live to get it… luv or hate, you’ll only then know what they’re all about

Mrs. Jones | 9/24/2007, 8:59 am EST

This band has endured, and still manages to “speak” to me. Whther a student (The “August” years) a newlywed (the “Recovering” Years), a new mom (the “Desert” years) or a single mom falling in love again(”Hard Candy”), I have been able to relate. The music is timeless and soulful and just amazing. The Paris live tracks had me finding new appreciation for a band I already consider the absolute best.

Now a newlywed again at 35, I await the new release, and prepare to be dazzled yet again.

bicka | 9/24/2007, 6:05 am EST

This band has more emotion than any I have ever heard. Adam is an amazing song writer, His lyrics are deep and soulful. Their fans are loyal and he thanks them live in every show. They are future Hall of Famers. I love this band!

Kage | 9/23/2007, 11:49 pm EST

Adam even makes me sound impressive. Did you hear the cover of Big Yellow Taxi. This band Rocks. Then they put out two albums at the same time. Good heavens Adam is something special alright. And did I mention how fit he’s looking these days. Makes an old womans heart skip a beat.

..one of the most..if not THE most musically-superior bands in America..been hooked ever since Chgo’s Old St. Pat’s Block Party..

justlikeme | 9/21/2007, 9:12 pm EST

Counting Crows are one of the best Rock n’ Roll bands in the world…period They even play real live instruments to make soulful music. WoW what a concept!!

Lennongirl | 9/21/2007, 8:48 pm EST

I’ve seen them twice this summer and numerous times in the past. Counting Crows are amazing, as long as they play, I will be there.

Caroline | 9/21/2007, 4:31 pm EST

Counting Crows are are one of the most amazing bands out there and they really know how to deliver when you see them live…everyone stop hating…I cannot wait for the new album!

bob m. | 9/21/2007, 3:04 pm EST

counting crows are one of the top 5 live acts touring in the country today…if you see them live once you will be hooked

Mr. Jones | 9/20/2007, 2:58 am EST

Face if they weren’t good they wouldn’t still be around!! CC and Duritz are pure songwriters not looking for a big pop hit, they stay true to what they love. Talk to me in 10 years if a 1/3 of these “emo” bands are around…or even remembered. Fall Out Boy could wind up like Limp Biscuit….the flavor of the year or 2 than long gone and forgotten! Sorry Fall Out Boy your an ok band but don’t see it long term.

jesse stael | 9/19/2007, 12:40 pm EST

I have been a devoted fan for years, and i have never seen them live, i live in holland and i just about missed them the other time, but i am happy they are doing great! check my myspace/jessestael if you like CC

Sammy | 9/19/2007, 12:05 pm EST

Face the facts you douchbags, this band sucks ass as well as emo. Mis- ter Jones and me…. man that shit is cheesy.

crows crows crows | 9/19/2007, 11:21 am EST

they are hands down one of the best live acts out there today, touring non stop and still packing venues like it’s going out of style. 14 years and they’re still around!!!! hopefully for (at least) 14 more

Your mama! | 9/19/2007, 10:30 am EST

I think that this is an excellent band, comprised of amazing player, and songwriters. Their 1st album still IS a MASTERPIECE of depression, sorrow, and introspectiveness…MILES AHEAD OF WHAT YOU STUPID EMO FUCKS ARE DOING TODAY!!! GO FIGURE OUT WHAT COLOR YOU’LL BE DYING YOUR HAIR NEXT, AND WHICH ONE OF THE 5000 STRIPED SHIRTS YOU’LL BE CHOOSING TO CUT THUMBHOLES IN, YOU FUCKING PANZIES!!!!

Al Gore | 9/19/2007, 2:08 am EST

I saw these guys last year in Milwaukee. They haven’t had an album out in five years, and they packed in 22,000. Impressive. Spectacular live show.

Nmar | 9/18/2007, 5:39 pm EST

All of the Adam Duritz haters in here, He is an aquired taste, See em live and you’ll get a better appreciation for the music of the Crows. And second, most of you probably couldn’t pen and make music like these guys could. Most new bands can’t improvise like the Crows. So, hatas, shaddap.

laura gary | 9/18/2007, 4:45 pm EST

plain and simple… dont listen to their music and dont read their reviews, and dont respond to what i say…. i seriously doubt i would like what you listen to….

Johnny Kickass | 9/18/2007, 2:30 pm EST

How could anyone, ANYONE, like this band. He has the most annoying voice…when that ‘Accidentally in Love’ song was being played on the radio all the time it made me want to hurt someone.

Stuporfly | 9/18/2007, 1:09 pm EST

Every time I hear Duritz’ voice, I want to gouge my eardrums to shreds with searing hot letter openers.

laura gary | 9/18/2007, 12:52 pm EST

if you were a true crows fan, you would know that the band is alive and has been touring on and off for the last fifteen years… and no, the man isnt stoned. jughead, you obviously havent ever been a crows fan, or been to a concert… try it , you might like it… cowboys is a great song, especially done live….

Jughead | 9/18/2007, 12:49 pm EST

Someone ought to tell Adam that he’s got a giant spider sitting on his head. Dude looks like he’s stoned on something.

who knew | 9/18/2007, 11:37 am EST

KICK ASS SONG, can’t wait for the album!

Denis Leary | 9/18/2007, 10:25 am EST

Oh my God, I can’t believe it; he’s still alive!
