Tom Petty Covers Fats Domino: Listen to “I’m Walkin’”

9/17/07, 5:36 pm EST

  • Next Tuesday, artists as diverse as Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams, Norah Jones, Lenny Kravitz and Paul McCartney will pay tribute to Fats Domino on the double-CD covers set Goin’ Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino (album sales will help buy instruments for students in New Orleans public schools and contribute to the building of a community center in the city’s Hurricane Katrina-damaged Ninth Ward). Here’s a first listen to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ contribution to the album: a cover of “I’m Walkin’.”

I love Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers - the concerts they put on are the best out there. Seeing them at the Gorge in WA state - out of this world. We want more tour dates and this song on the list would be great!

Tom, How about Bloomington/Normal IL? We’d love to see you here.

Tom Petty is one of my all time favorite musicians and when I found out he was contributing a cover of Fats’ I’m Walkin I knew it was going to be great. And it IS. It’s nice to see musicians coming together to help our city get back on its feet musically. Thank you Tom!!

I think Tom does a great job, the song totally fits for New Orleans with the rhythm and this album is going to be great!

I’m Runnin’ to get this new album, anything to hear Tom Petty sing another song!!! Mike Campbell does belong in the top 100 guitatist of all time, a gross oversight by R. S. MORE TP!!!!!

This soesn’t sound like t0he Heartbreakers at all, just Tom and some session musicians. To me, this cover is superfluos, sorry, cause I’m a Pety-fan.

zxx | 9/21/2007, 7:11 am EST

petty rocks

Joanie | 9/21/2007, 2:56 am EST

Great songwriter with an annoying nasally voice. I’ll stick with the Fats Domino originals and send a cash donation instead.

NOLA | 9/20/2007, 2:55 pm EST

And a good cause too!!!Proceeds go to the Tipitina’s Foundation to bring back music in New Orleans.

Just saw the record’s line-up, which is totally ridiculous…this is with the Heartbreakers.

Big Chief | 9/20/2007, 2:20 pm EST

This is absolutely fantastic!!!This record is going to be killer…

Cheap Trick was the first major rock concert I went to when I was a kid. What’s cool about CT’s cover version (of Aint That A Shame) is that they did it completely in their own style. Tom Petty’s verson (of I’m Walking) sounds like a direct duplication of the original - it’s really not that interesting, so why bother listening to it.

dude | 9/20/2007, 12:16 pm EST

how about cheap tricks version ‘aint that a shame?’ best cover of fats ever…….

Bullit | 9/20/2007, 4:03 am EST

I’ve followed TP ever since he supported Nils Lofgren in Edinburgh ‘77′. Everything he does is just brilliant. When’s he coming back to Scotland ?

Wanna be a Heartbreaker | 9/19/2007, 9:56 pm EST

Thanks…least that RS can do though. Mike Campbell belongs in the top 100 guitarists!

Doug W. | 9/19/2007, 8:18 pm EST

Yes, It’s the Heartbreakers.

Cheesecrop | 9/19/2007, 6:33 pm EST

It’s about time that Fats was recognized. An absolute legend who often goes unspoken.

JP | 9/19/2007, 4:17 pm EST

Slightly disappointing. Tom Petty does a really faithful job with the song. It’s just too faithful. That’s the problem with most tribute albums. The artists are stuck with being faithful to the original or risk ruining the song by putting an original take on it.

MW | 9/19/2007, 4:01 pm EST

I love Tom Petty! This is a great cover!
