Prince’s Message to Everyone: Stop Bootlegging My Stuff

9/14/07, 12:22 pm EST

Prince has a message 4 U: Stop UR illegal downloading! To prove he means business, the Purple One is prepping lawsuits against major file-trading sites like YouTube, eBay and Pirate Bay to reclaim control over bootlegged tunes, videos and merchandise. No legal docs have been filed, but the singer recently hired London-based company Web Sheriff, which has been trolling the Net for sites selling unlicensed goods (everything from Prince-adorned socks to key rings) to provide evidence should the star decide to take the battle to court. “This isn’t necessarily about money,” says Web Sheriff’s president John Giacobbi, who has wiped off 2,000 illegally uploaded videos from YouTube and shut down about 300 eBay auctions, as well as multiple multiple overseas sites selling unauthorized merchandise. “Prince feels very strongly about his artistry — he wants it to be reflected the way he wants. There’s no problem with some guy selling his twenty-five-year-old copy of Purple Rain, but we object to a Chinese sweatshop turning out Purple Rain shopping bags and selling them by the thousands.”

The name of the song is Lemon Crush. And who cares if people like Prince enough to bootleg his stuff. It’s not like he’s some up and coming artist who’s getting raped by the industry. He’s been around forever…and he’s ALREADY RICH!

MulattoGirl | 9/7/2008, 9:23 pm EST

“when I’m working at my job-a, I’m the victim, you’re the robb-a.

guess what Prince song that line is from! I guess he was trying to tell us even back then.

“Cymbal Man | 1/29/2008, 4:20 pm EST

That’s funny…the washed up freak still thinks he’s relevant. ”

yeah, he’s so irrelevant that he played the fucking super bowl last year…and tore the thing up.

That being said, I wouldnt want some vendor on the street corner selling sweatshop made shirts with my image on them. Prince has a responsiility to at least stop that aspect of bottlegging.

As for the whole youtube thing and free publicity, wasn’t Prince the one who gave his entire album away in a newspaper not even 9 months ago? So why whine now? How has nobady mentioned that?

The idiot masses have way too short of a memory.

on an off-topic note: fuck the cheating Patriots.

The control freaks’ roots are based in the same way he attempts to control his reproductive capacity. This fellow has had a stillborn child, a broken marraige, probably thousands of sexual encounters with purple protection…I have never seen a case of a person protecting his objects (musical catalog) as if they were his children-indeed, in a way they are. I feel sorry for him, despite that he still looks like he’s 20..he acts like he’s too immersed in his own material love of himself. I guess even musical narcissist playboys need to protect themselves-see also: Liberace’s ‘private’ homosexuality…funny about all those diamond encrusted pianos..you can bet he had bodyguards around it/and him, his life through!!

Venus is proably a man and the poe 14 years old

Mr Me Too | 1/30/2008, 9:53 am EST

Mr. Me, you are a brainwashed tool of the record industry. I’ll tell you what:

How about I do a job for you for a week, then I’ll never show my face again and you can continue to pay me for that job for the next 30 years whilst I sit on my arse and do nothing.

Think about that, then see how you feel about this topic then.

Ripping customers off is ripping customers off. Bottom line.

Fuck Prince…he can take that squiggly symbol of his and shove it up his arse.

Mr Me | 1/29/2008, 6:57 pm EST

Ill tell ya what…

You come do a full week’s work for me, then at the end of the week I tell you Im not going to pay you.

See how you feel about this topic then.

Stealing is stealing-bottom line.

Cymbal Man | 1/29/2008, 4:20 pm EST

Fuck Prince!!!

eddie | 11/9/2007, 4:54 pm EST

Well I agree that to a certain point prince has a right to be upset about the bootlegging However, he has to realize that alot of people have forgotten him and how long has it been since he came out with anything that has topped the charts. When I think of Prince I think about the 80’s and if he doesn’t like the free publicity then well it will be only his committed fans that will remember him. Presently do you think young people will spend the money to purchase his music just to see what it is like???Well he might as well take all his crap off of everthing including music /video stations(Tv & radio)

ML | 11/9/2007, 1:26 pm EST

Any intelligent artist would view the majority of unauthorized internet-based media (like YouTube) as essentially free publicity. It’s not going to stop the true fans from buying authorized, legal copies of his albums. What it does do is it keeps his name in rotation - if it weren’t for the internet and unauthorized uses of his work, I wouldn’t have heard of prince since “purple rain.” damn, even free, i don’t want to listen to his music.

KE | 11/7/2007, 2:19 pm EST

I wish he could still make exciting new music. Now that would be takin’ care of business!

kg | 11/7/2007, 10:54 am EST

What a bunch of spoiled brats. What ever happened to respect for the artist. Its a two way street.. Prince has always been ahead of the curve and what he said was always respected by the fans when what he was doing was taking on the established music industry. Now, after years of bootlegging etc, he’s making his point to the fans and you guys are reacting like children. Take a moment to give him a bit of respect..
He’s not a little rich kid.. he’s a musician who works for his money .. And more importantly he’s an artist who is always expressing himself honestly.. He’s not a fashion follower.. and now think about how valuable that is to the music culture.
I don’t think he’d be standing up unless this was out of control.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ . . .

realmccoy | 9/16/2007, 4:47 pm EST

Is that intended as a representation (or should I say, “misrepresentation”) of the opinion of all women across the board? No doubt, that stereotyping by the comment below was probably written by a guy who has no clue.

Venus | 9/15/2007, 8:38 pm EST

Prince is so hot; he can have access to my 3 inputs any time he wants!

supersonic | 9/15/2007, 6:51 am EST

I was really shocked by the Pope’s behavior. I never would’ve guessed that he was into Prince or downloading pirated music. Sometimss it pays to stay up all night.

supersonic | 9/15/2007, 6:34 am EST

we want the pope. we want the pope. we want the pope.

Bukowski | 9/15/2007, 6:32 am EST

Bukowski | 9/15/2007, 6:31 am EST

there’s little difference between holiness and debachery when you really look at it.

wild goose | 9/15/2007, 3:49 am EST

you can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool everybody all of the time.

supersonic | 9/15/2007, 2:42 am EST

there’s people you can fool part of the time. and then there’s people you can fool over and over and over again!

being too intuitive can also be a problem.

Supersonic | 9/14/2007, 8:58 pm EST

i guess you’re not down with the cameras everwhere culture in which we now live?

sign explained | 9/14/2007, 8:52 pm EST

trivial matters are not important to know about, especially if they do not concern you.

Supersonic | 9/14/2007, 8:48 pm EST

the real thing is how easy it is to pass by things and not give them a second thought, which we are all guilty of from time to time.

Supersonic | 9/14/2007, 8:45 pm EST

…or recognizing the unobvious.
then again, do we really want to know everything?

Supersonic | 9/14/2007, 8:36 pm EST

the definition of genius is recognizing the obvious.

sign explained | 9/14/2007, 6:52 pm EST

it’s true…there are 2 sides to every coin. it depends on one’s own perception. i have the tendency to look beyond the obvious.

supersonic | 9/14/2007, 6:25 pm EST

your post and mine are both explaining the opposite sides of the same coin!!!

sign explained | 9/14/2007, 6:08 pm EST

that’s an interesting “unmarketing” strategy.

supersonic | 9/14/2007, 5:54 pm EST

he created the sign so his record company (WB) would have an extremely tough time advertising his records. he was in an intense battle with the label and wanted out of his contract. the sign was designed to confuse the consumer in such a way that WB wouldn’t be able to make a profit off any new releases.

Make Me Wonder | 9/14/2007, 5:50 pm EST

I wonder if Rolling Stone actually put up an articles giving their “neutral” perspective but subsequently post anonymously as visitors thrashing the artist featured in the article..

It’s an unpronounceable trademarked logo which combines the symbols for male and female. That might explain the high-heeled boots.

qwertyuio | 9/14/2007, 4:02 pm EST

well, if prince is hurting for money, he could always fire that guy holding the umbrella in that picture. prince could always just…you know, hold his own umbrella. call me crazy.

What | 9/14/2007, 2:39 pm EST

Purple Rain handbags are the hot sh*t this fall season!

Tom | 9/14/2007, 2:37 pm EST

“Prince feels very strongly about his artistry”… LOL. LMAO!! ROTFL!!! You have to wonder about this, after hearing crap like New Power Soul, Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, and Chaos & Disorder.

Poor Little Rich Kid, what are the children getting paid to make all the merchandise 5 cents a hour. Go back to being a decal or sign or whatever that was.
