Kanye Winning Chart Battle; 50 Cent Blames his Label

9/13/07, 9:42 am EST

The early results are in: After one day of sales, the chart battle between RS cover stars Kanye West and 50 Cent is looking more like a smackdown. According to Billboard’s Building Chart feature, West sold 437,000 copies of Graduation on Tuesday, while 50 only managed to sell 310,000 copies of Curtis in the first 24 hours of release. Like any self-respecting artist, 50 Cent is blaming his record label.

Hip Hop is sooooooooo 1999.

Brit - Hop? | 9/13/2007, 11:42 am EST

Didn’t Blur and Oasis do this exact thing in the UK way back in the 90’s? You can’t expect much creativity from ham-fisted fiddy, but c’mon Kanye. You can do better than a re-hashed stunt like this.

Dolla and 86 Cent | 9/13/2007, 11:53 am EST

Yo Yo Yo, like 50 Cent is losing the battle. Let’s see if he quits the music biz like he said he would if Kanye sells more albums.

Tyrus | 9/13/2007, 1:01 pm EST

Bitch bitch bitch, these guys are geniuses. They are using thier star power and creating what i would call a “friendly” conflict to save the music industry, selling CD’s, its all hype! and its working.

rock and roll | 9/13/2007, 1:30 pm EST

rap sucks. shit “music”.

Joe | 9/13/2007, 1:47 pm EST

DAVID | 9/13/2007, 3:23 pm EST

fuck yess!!! im so excited that your f–king beloved “fiddy” is losing and is avtully blameinng it on his label!! thats a new low.

sjb0911 | 9/13/2007, 5:08 pm EST

I was actually going to take a listen to both albums but can honestly say now I don’t give a shit. To have Kanye say, prior to the VMA’s during his interview that this was the biggest release date (or something to that effect) “in music history” is the most ridiculous comment I have ever heard; not to mention self-righteous and conceited. As if these two were the most influtential music geniuses of all time- HA!

sarah | 9/13/2007, 8:12 pm EST

YES KANYE. love himmm! 50 makes fun of kanye for complaining about losing at the VMAs… now what is 50 doing- thats right blaming the label

james HILLTOP | 9/13/2007, 11:36 pm EST

why are people saying that 50 said he will retire, he said back like a month ago that will not be the case go to mtv.com and see for yourself he said it on the 14th of August that it was an outburst made when his follow my lead single got leaked… can we read

Yeah I know what you are sayin but white teenagers love these guys so the labels will conitnue to cater.

Anyway, I really like Kanye’s CD ( even though he is an ass) so I hope he wins this week. His music is fun.

TM | 9/14/2007, 12:27 am EST

I have both CDs and both are great albums. But you can’t really compare the two. Each is like a well directed, award winning movie of different genres.

Fifty’s is like that intense Scarface flick you have in your DVD collection… the unrated version! It’s hard hitting with real graphic slices of life… sex, violence, action, romance etc. This movie can’t be done without gratuitous T&A, wild shootouts, a car chase or some motherfucker getting shot in the head point blank! This is what Fifty does best. And, in my opinion, he delivered on this album… “Amusement Park”, “Ayo Technology”, “My Gun Go Off”, “I Get Money” all talk about hard hitting, real life, grown up shit. If you’ve ever went to a strip club, sweet-talked a girl for some sex, had beef with someone or really felt yourself because you had it better than some one else, then this is an album you could relate to. This album nourishes the hungry bad boy/girl in us all.

Kanye’s flick is like a conscious, soulful Spike Lee joint… Do The Right Thing or School Daze. This one’s rated R and its purpose is to get you to look a little closer at yourself. This movie’s characters are a little more colorful, exaggerated and animated. But, their stories are true-to-life and just as hard hitting as any action flick. No one gets shot in the head in this film… at least not with bullets. Kanye did his thing on this album. No one does songs like “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” in hip-hop. This album is clearly meant for your quieter, cocky and more introspective side.

LaughingMan | 9/14/2007, 1:13 am EST

Mr.West is smashing your king “fiddy” Hahaha Fiddy start workin on g-units new albums.hahah

MUCK CITY | 9/14/2007, 1:27 am EST

Both of these rap artists are trash. As usual 50 cent is doing something to hype up his album. Just like his last album he said “It will sell even more then my first.” He does things to pump everyone up. Kanye go back to school you are Garbage nobody cares that ur a college drop out.

vance | 9/15/2007, 12:23 am EST

what the hell are you people talking about rap is still alive and moving its way better then that rock bullshit that yall be listening too just saying random shit on a beat and call it music at least theres a topic when fifty and kanye raps

Anonymous | 9/15/2007, 3:20 am EST

I wish I could hate Kanye, but I can’t. He does have some good songs. 50 sucks. But then again so does hip-hop. And hip-hop is my favorite music genre. But this shit is retarded. These two need to realize that they are not music gods. They’re not even rap gods. Now Zeppelin reuniting to do a show, that’s real music news.

Greg Matthewson | 9/15/2007, 7:33 am EST

Both Kanye and 50 Cent produce music that is, at its core, too simplistic. While such music may be popular, it does not possess the intricacies and virtuosity displayed by jazz, rock, or blues artists such as Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, Jeff Beck, Eric Johnson,McCoy Tyner, and literally thousands of other musicians.

A Not Topic | 9/15/2007, 8:57 am EST

Trent Reznor writes better music and lyrics whilst in a coma. Any one can “rap”. You do it every day when you converse with other people. Just change the pitch and tone of a few of your words and create a rythmic pattern and blammo! You’re rapping! No pun intended Kurtis with the “blammo”. Why is there even an article on 2 knuckleheads who partake in the lowest form of poetry anyway? Kanye West is a disgrace, he stole his last “hit” song from Basement Jaxx. Who I might add also write better, stronger, faster music and lyrics whilst in a coma also.

KB | 9/15/2007, 12:52 pm EST

actually, “a not topic,” just because anyone can rap in a base sense doesn’t mean they can do it skillfully or creatively. ever tried freestyling? the level of mental recall and lyrical construction involved in creating a coherent, spontaneous piece of music (hmm, ever heard improv jazz?) is admirable. i happen to be a musician, and while anyone with the necessary appendages can make sound come from instruments, they cannot do it well. As for rap being the basest form of poetry, that is a matter of opinion, not fact, that seems born out of an underlying bias against that particular style of music. some people think bob dylan’s voice is garbage. are they committing musical sacrilege because of his history? or are they expressing an opinion based upon what they value musically? also, “sampling” is not a disgrace when done well. by no means am I exalting either character; they both seem a little touched. still, 50 seems to be performing a masterful copout by declaring war, then blaming his potential loss on interscope. seriously, 50, did it just suddenly dawn on you that interscope wasn’t doing their job? or only after the latest soundscan reports came in? either way, i’m not breaking my bank to buy either.

SELF-ABSORBED B*TCHES | 9/15/2007, 2:53 pm EST

Kanye: “People gonna remember this date (Sept 11) for the rest of their life”
50: “That’s right. It’s impossible for you not to know KW and 50 is out Sept. 11″
– Are you kidding me? Do these guys not realize how ridiculous that sounds, not to mention insulting to those whose lives have changed because of Sept. 11. Just more evidence to support the stereotype/truth of the self-absorbed “rap star”.

J. Travolta | 9/15/2007, 5:09 pm EST

Kanyes music is just repetative, listen to Gold digger, the same thing over and over again, 50s music isnt much better
These guys are like mcdonalds and burger king- popular, wealthy, but not exactly high quality

i wish u guys would stfu | 9/16/2007, 11:27 am EST

I agree with KB why dont all the haters die!!! 50 and Kanye are two successful African American Young Men, who became millionaires off of their talent, not from you haters, so haters go kick rocks!!! Be broke, Be Losers, AND STOP HATING!!!!

Why are these mental midgets and thier pathetic efforts even mentioned under a “music” heading? Wouldn’t this type of language mangling, drum machine dependent travesty be better placed under the “who gives a BLEEP” category?? Talking in cadence at various speeds isnt art, it’s called auctioneering.
