As the millions of people who crashed the O2 and Ahmet Ertegun tribute-concert Web sites yesterday demonstrate, the world is ready for the Led Zeppelin reunion that will take place November 26th in London. Here’s a few classic photos of the band in action in the late Sixties in early Seventies — live shots from the Newport Jazz Festival and other gigs, plus photos of the band landing in Honolulu in 1969 with masters of Led Zeppelin II in their arms and much more. And for dozens more photos of the band, check out the gallery on their artist page.

The site for Zeppelin tickets received slightly over a BILLION hits. If this was ANY other band, RS mag would have gone wild with publicity for the concert. The grudge is alive and well. In short, a couple of RS’s ancient and clueless critic’s slammed a couple of Zep’s early albums (now almost universally considered masterpieces) and the magazine tried to ignore Zep’s meteoric rise. When Zep became so enormous, RS looked ridiculous giving massive publicity to others that Zep was outselling 3 to 1. Zep essentially told them to F/Off when they approached Zep for cover features. Remember same man owns RS that did in 1969.

So, what was this grudge thing all about? I know back in the late 70’s, RS completely snubbed Led Zeppelin. This was extremely irritating to me, because they were my favorite group. I never knew what caused it though. I’m extremely curious.

i have to agree with photo #7…it captures that action and energy at the very precise moment.

Led Zep is as good as it gets. I’m a huge Beatles, Stones, etc. fan. Oh, forget all that talk. Zep is in a category ALL by themselves.

I’d love to have a plaster cast of Robert Plant’s wand so I can inject myself any time I feel like it!

It’s pitiful, but that old resentment for Zeppelin still exists at RS magazine after all these years. Remember, the same man that owned the publication in 1969, owns it today. I’ve seen him interviewed, and while he glows about the Beatles and Stones, he has a difficult time even saying ‘Led Zeppelin’. There is clearly still bad blood. Watch carefully how they cover this event, and consider how they might cover this unprecedented demand for one band if it was directed at Dylan, The Stones, or several of their other favorites.

Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Stones and Spiders From Mars. No bands EVER will reach that magnitude again.

I love how you kiss their asses now Rolling Stone.
They’ve been laughing at you punks for years now, all the way to the bank.

Sometimes Bukowski can be a real masogynistic ass! Get your soul together, dude!

Hi, that’s very interesting! Do you really think the grudge thing still exists? Didn’t that start right at the beginning of Led Zep because of a bad review in ‘69? That would truly be a sad state of affairs if that was still alive!
miccc | 9/13/2007, 10:05 pm EST
Hey RS magazine, I just read that demand for the Zeppelin tickets are unprecedented in rock history. How are you going to cover this one? The first few hours 20-million people registered for tickets with 80,000 more every minute. It will be hard to play this one down, how are you going to do it? Any other band in the world that created unprecedented demand for tickets would get unbridled RS worship, but not Zeppelin because of the old grudge.

Man, page really likes those double necks.
In most bands, I laugh because it’s like watching an infant holding a calculator. Page is more than capable though so it only makes it that much more awesome.

Coolski!!!
wheeee! | 9/13/2007, 7:35 pm EST
Agreed on #7. That one could do with some poster size blow ups.
My favorite though is 5. Page looks like a hobo. Funniest thing I’ve seen all day.

Led Zeppelin was the most intimidating band in their look, in their music, and every other way! Check out picture number 7. Has any band had a bigger aura???
