Bobby Byrd, soul musician and James Brown’s longtime sideman, died yesterday of cancer in his home in Loganville, GA. Byrd penned well-known R&B songs like “Hot Pants,” and he founded the Famous Flames, Brown’s longtime backing band. Byrd can be heard on classic Brown tracks like “Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine.” He was seventy-three.

Bobby was / is my main and I’ve known him my whole life. He is a musical genius. As I look back on his life my only regret is that he did not get to take that walk into the Rock & Roll hall of Fame. He was the most sincere husband, father and friend. He set examples on how life was supposed to be. Not to mention the funkiest cat I ever rocked with, He dropped a track for us recently in which he let the funk out with a soulfully funky ballad in which he let the world know he was “back from the dead”,musically. But if know his family and body of work you know he never left.
Boby you showed us how to love a woman and how to uplift your fellow man, We’ll always love you.

Don’t post it how it seems post it how it was. Bobby Byrd and the Flames brought James brown in to the game. Without bobby and his family we might have never even heard the name james brown. That man and his musiic influenced generations.

Bobby Byrd was apart the White Family. We will miss him playing the piano and singing a duet with Cousin Vicki at the Family Reunions in Conyers!

When I was in junior high school, Bobby Byrd had this hot record out—when he sang, “Keep on doin’ what you’re doin’, baby…” all the kids would jump up and dance The Cambell Lock when they heard those words shout out from the speakers. Much later, Clarence “Blowfly” Reid told me he had written a song for Bobby called “Headquarters,” a song James did not like as it was a regional hit that was not a James Brown production on a TK Records label. James definitely was there to meet Bobby with a cape, probably saying, “Bobby, we got 5 minutes before we’re on.” God Bless Bobby and his family, will miss James and Bobby deeply, dearly and lovingly.

Let’s be clear about one thing. the Famous Flames WERE NOT a backing band. they were a VOCAL GROUP. The Flames consisted of James Brown, lead singer, Lloyd Stallworth, 1st tenor (who replaced original member Johnny Terry) , Bobby Bennett, 2nd tenor, and the great Bobby Byrd, baritone/bass.James Brown’s BAND was called ….(no duh) THE JAMES BROWN BAND !! this means that musicans such as MACEO PARKER , FRED WESLEY,JABO STARKS etc, were BAND MEMBERS…. NOT FAMOUS FLAMES . THE FLAMES AND THE BAND WERE 2 SEPARATE ENITIES. The Flames were seen on film with Brown in the 1964 concert film the T.A.M.I Show (where they STOLE THE SHOW from The Rolling Stones,The Supremes, and everyone else), and in the Frankie Avalon film ” Ski Party”. They also appeared with James on Dick Clark’s shows, “American Bandstand” and “Where the Action Is”…and two episodes of the ED SULLIVAN SHOW. JAMES has stated publicly many times that the Famous Flames were a singing group, but until this very day many so- called music historians still don’t get the MESSAGE.The Flames sang with James on the million selling LP “LIVE AT THE APOLLO”, THE Top 10 LP “PURE DYNAMITE-LIVE AT THE ROYAL” , AND “JAMES BROWN & THE FAMOUS FLAMES - LIVE AT THE GARDEN”, as well as on such hits as “Please Please, Please, “Try Me,”I’ll Go Crazy”,”Think”,”Bewildered”,Go od Good Lovin’,”Oh Baby, Dont You Weep”, and many more. The Famous Flames are one of the great unsung singing groups in Rock & R&B history, mainly because so many writers to this day still erronously call them a BAND!!! I suggest to all music writers and Rock historians that are still doing this, to please read or re- read James’autobiography. Then ,read the liner notes to all of the POLYDOR CD re-releases of JAMES AND THE FLAMES early albums , such as the PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE album, the THINK album, and the TRY ME album….then go on the internet and obtain the two aforementioned films…. then read “THE FAMOUS FLAMES” in Wikipedia… All of these sources say the same thing …. THE FAMOUS FLAMES are a SINGING GROUP….NOT A BAND . This lie has been perpetuated for 50 years… and has cost Bobby Byrd and the other members of THE FLAMES a possible spot in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame….. which they so richly deserve. JAMES BROWN AND THE FAMOUS FLAMES WERE THE MOST POWERFUL VOCAL GROUP IN R&B HISTORY !!!! IT’S TIME THEY GOT THE DUE CREDIT THEY DESERVE. IT’S HIGH TIME THIS “BAND” LIE GOT BURIED ONCE AND FOR ALL !!

I know Bobby Byrd, James Brown and the rest of the Famous Flames are making more Funk Music together in Heaven.

Bobby should be inducted to the rock and roll hall of fame…
Side by side with James Brown Bobby Byrd was an innovator. I encourage everyone to read James Brown’s first of two autobiographies and the reader will easily realize the importance and now the loss of a musical great.

My main man .
“I’m talkin’ about BOBBY BYRD.
You see he’s a young man that sings his heart out”.
Take care BOBBY!
We”ll miss that great voice that you and the “FLAMES” gave to the total sound that was James Brown.

JAMES LOVED THIS CAT. WITH THE COMPLETE DE-EVOLUTION OF SOUL AS RENDERED IMPOTENT BY THE VERY KIDS WHO SHOULD BE POLICING THIS ZONE, BROWN ONCE STOOD ERECT AND PREACHED THE FOLLOWING SIX DELIVERANCES.
‘I’M TALKIN’ BOUT BOBBY BYRD NOW!’
THOSE WORDS CAN BE HEARD EXCLAIMED BY MR. B. ON HIS CONTEMPTUOUS AND PLEADING KING SINGLE ‘OH BABY DON’T YOU WEEP.’
IF POSSIBLE ,LOCATE THE VERSION WITH THE AUDIENCE INCORPORATED INTO
THE RECORDING AFTER COMPLETION.
WHEN BYRDS NAME IS EXCLAIMED A FEW YOUNG GIRLS REVEAL A SINATRA-ESQ SQUEAL WHICH IN THE RECORDED HISTORY OF BOBBY BYRD, WAS PROBABLY AS CLOSE AS HE EVER CAME TO MAINSTREAM STARDOM.
AND THAT WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME
GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME AND BOBBY THE B.
SEE YA SOON KING OF ALL TRUE BLUE FLAME.

As We Get Older And Our Musical Heroes Start Passing On. . .Makes You Wonder If Today’s Musicians Will Be Rememebered As Well When They Pass. Ladies And Gentlemen, More Funk Has Left The Building! RIP Bobby!!

Please be mindfull that Bobby’s daughter lives in England, if you didn’t know Bobby personally as I did for over 40 years please don’t make any negative comments about him. Bobby was one of the sweetest people I ever was blessed to know, dope, no not Byrd he was nothing like that, I never heard my brother say a harsh word about anyone so please respect him as well. I ask your prayers for his family in this hour of grief. The world has not only lost a great entertainer but also a kind and gentle soul. RIP Bobby and know that I am so glad the last words we said to one another last week were I love you. I know I will see you again one day.
Respectfully;

It’s sad that he died, but as far as he having more to contribute musically might not be true. Maybe he was out of shit.
