The Story Behind the Led Zeppelin Reunion: Is a Tour Next?

9/12/07, 3:17 pm EST

Led Zeppelin will reform for a one-off show at the O2 Arena, London on November 26th. “They’re going to play all the great songs that everybody wants to hear,” said promoter Harvey Goldsmith, who brokered what must surely be the Holy Grail of rock reunions. “They are the last great rock gods that remain to be seen,” Goldsmith added. “I have a feeling that this is going to be the largest demand for one show in history.”

(Click here to check out photos of the band onstage and off from the late Sixties and early Seventies).

Having been approached by the widow of the late record company executive Ahmet Ertegun to organize a tribute concert, Goldsmith began negotiating with the managers of the surviving members of Led Zeppelin — Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones — and the manager of drummer Jason Bonham, the son of the late John Bonham, to see if a reunion was possible. After several weeks of discussions the band finally assembled in a rehearsal studio on the outskirts of London in June to see if they could still play together.

The initial plan was for them to work up a half-hour of material to play as part of a gala concert. But after a week of rehearsals, Zeppelin announced that they would be willing and able to perform a full two-hour set. The November 26th show will feature warm-up contributions from Billy Wyman’s Rhythm Stars, Pete Townshend, Foreigner and Paolo Nutini. But there is no mistaking what the star attraction will be. Speculation that other Zeppelin shows and possibly even a full reunion tour will follow is running high. “You have to take it one step at a time,” Harvey said. “Obviously there is a sense of frustration for all the fans around the world who can’t get tickets. I hope they do something else. But I hope they do it because they’re really enjoying it and because this show is fantastic.”

Fans wanting to purchase tickets priced at £125 (approximately $250) must register at www.ahmettribute.com, where their names will be entered in a lottery. 14,500 tickets will be made available in this way, according to Goldsmith. In addition there will be a handful of special “package tickets” available for between £750 to £1000.

These guys are such legends. They’re only men,but what talent.I’ve been listening to them for as long as they’ve been around and though not fortunate enough to have ever seen them play live they have provided me with so many thrills over the years.I grew up listening to a wide range of music, but Zep always “brings it on home” for me.I really don’t mean to slag anyone’s choice in music but I mean honestly how can some of the stuff being produced today ever hold a candle to what these guys did?

Has anybody here seen Jason Bonham live? I had been living in Dallas, TX. from ‘95 thru 2000. My roommate and I were looking for trouble in Deep Ellum… nothing was happening. We made our way to the only club in Dallas that had cover bands, a place called Rock City, we paid our 5 bucks to enter expecting the same old crap from some crappy band. We saddled up the the bar, ordered a shot and a beer, band was just getting on stage and start off with Rock-N-Roll, cool but not a huge deal, we quickly realize that this band is dead nuts on zeppelin and thats all they are playing. I’m a drummer and thinking to myself this guy has Bonham perfected. It’s not long that the singer announces that they are the Jason Bonham Band, unannounced and playing for a mere 60 people. I have been playing drums and guitar actively for 32 yrs. Zeppelin and Hendrix are why and I will bet that not many would have known the difference on 12/10/07. I didn’t in ‘96.

Rabid | 12/11/2007, 11:06 pm EST

Zeppelin will tour if the chemistry is there… if the passion to create is overwhelming and they simple have no choice but to play because they simply cannot deny it to themselves. I hope that this is the case and get to witness it. I have been a fan since ‘69 when at the age of six I heard You Shook Me on my Dad’s car radio that my brother and I would mess with and vividly remember commenting that the guitar and singer were talking to each other… may you keep talking that talk oh’ MIGHTY ZEPPELIN.

Zeppelin Fan24 | 12/11/2007, 8:41 pm EST

I don’t see why people don’t like Jason Bonham. He’s a great guy and really, who would have better experiance then his own son? I think it’s a great chose of a drummer. I’m sure he will continue to be as good as he is.

isaac | 12/11/2007, 7:48 pm EST

i agree with the 15 year old below. im only 14 years old and i would love to see led zeppelin. ive never been to a concert before and ive been hoping theyd come.
led zeppelin is awesome.

Dave Z | 12/11/2007, 7:29 pm EST

no worries - this will be nothing but great if they tour. anybody who doesn’t like the idea can stay home that night and pretend that there’s nothing really really FUN going on ;)

Bearz | 12/11/2007, 10:52 am EST

I’m a traveler in both time & space. The planet should be grateful they even choose to preform again.

al.k | 12/10/2007, 10:11 pm EST

If the Zep brand is able return to the stage without scrutiny it is not without risk.

Page and Plant will have to match the intensity and genius of TOWNSHEND AND DALTREY who still rock the planet.

looking for the Stairway | 12/10/2007, 6:42 pm EST

Yay! Led Zep s back!!! Too bad tickets cost a fortune….and I’m not one for luck in the lottery.

5th element | 12/10/2007, 12:24 am EST

Zep truly epitomized the saying that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Ego didn’t produce rifts in the band. They were like family to each other, the guys got along and genuinely liked each other. All that comes out in their music (and the recorded talk among them at the finish of some of the songs). I truly was heartbroke when Bonzo died, just weeks before I was to see Zep in Chicago in 1980. I’d seen them in Chicago and Indy on their ‘77 tour. “Kashmir” just blew me and the other 20,000 fans away like no other single moment of any concert I’ve ever been too. That April 6th , 1977 Chicago Stadium evening with my Zep buds during college years will for me stand out forever.

Leapy | 12/9/2007, 1:46 am EST

When I heard on a conservative radio station in Australia reserved for politics that Led Zeppelin was reforming I knew some sense had finally come to the world. We over the other side of the planet were blessed to have the band here in the 70s then Page and Plant in the 90s, But are they coming to Australia in the naughties?? A decade truly made for Zep!!! If the powers that be read this BRING LED ZEPPELIN DOWN UNDER. A whole lotta girls have been waitin a long time. Mmmwaaaah from Aust

Sara | 12/8/2007, 6:51 pm EST

To Jerry, I can tell you that Krokus is still touring. I saw them last year at Sweden Rock festival and they were awesome!

Mike | 12/7/2007, 7:00 pm EST

This is in response to peter grants post below.
Come on Peter Grant, what could possibly be more important than managing the affairs of Plant and Page so that the world can see them one more time as Led Zeppelin? Could it be a little thing like, oh…I don’t know…maybe because you died in 1995. Seems to me that your calendar should be pretty much empty unless it takes all your time and energy to push up daisies.

gollum the evil one | 12/3/2007, 2:32 pm EST

I loved Zep since 1969. They are the most creative studio bands ever.
Stairway is the best rock song ever composed.
I have seen them live a number of times and each time Page was less than he should be.
Missed notes and off key.
I blamed it on the heroin and booze.
Recently seen Page and Plant a few years back and the sound was so muddy and sustained and that Page’s leads could not be heard.
He was not bad with the Black Crows but then there were 2 other guitarists.
I understand that he can not play all the parts himself so the sound is empty at times but I have heard high school bands do the songs better.
I hope this time they rehearse and play better and make a video for all of us to enjoy.

peter grant | 11/30/2007, 12:34 pm EST

Only at the weekend i was talking to mrsrs Page and plant and both of them confirmed to me that there would be a tour taking place ,however the catch was they wanted me to manage there affairs again which for some reason or another i am not able to do ,

enserink | 11/30/2007, 12:15 am EST

im 15 years old, and I believe that Led Zeppelin is the greatest band of all time.

I wasn’t around when all the good artists were young and touring plenty, so seeing a Led Zeppelin concert is one of my biggest dreams… it would be amazing if they came to Canada.

EDDIE WRETCH | 11/25/2007, 8:11 pm EST

I’m sorry to single you out, Mr. Mark Hackney. There are many people on the internet who make the same mistakes that you have.
I am posting this to say that I am happy to read that your boys are into Rock N Roll music, but please stress the importance of a strong education, particularly paying close attention in English class. There are mistakes you can make that spell check will not catch, such as your errors. You quit playing in bands (you spelled it as “q-u-i-t-E”) and “…they’re still relevant” (not “their”, as you wrote). These are common mistakes, but we need to take responsibilty for our use (or in this case, misuse) of the English langusage.

Colchar | 11/23/2007, 1:43 pm EST

test your Zep knowledge.
- who suggested the band’s name?
Keith Moon (although Entwhistle claims it was him).

- what name did the band use on their first few shows?
The New Yardbirds

-what was the band that both Plant & Bonham were in before Zep?
Band of Joy

-What was the first US city they played?
Boston

-The title “out on the tiles” refers to what? Who came up with the title?
Going out drinking with the lads and Bonham came up with it (in his recent supergroup reality show thing Jason talked about how his dad came up with it…he walked into the studio one day humming the song and the band loved it so they wrote it).

-What was Page’s Main guitar on Zeppelin I?
Telecaster

- the song “Boogie with Stu”, who is Stu?
Ian Stewart

-Arena Song Remains the Same concert was filmed?
Madison Square Garden, 1973.

Colchar | 11/23/2007, 1:38 pm EST

To the person who mentioned that RP said on his official website that he would do a tour if everything worked out properly, can you provide a link to that? I checked his site and couldn’t find that comment.

And to the person questioning why Jason on drums…why do you think?!? He is a great drummer and there is no other drummer in the world who has the right to take JB’s place - except his son. If JB were alive today and were simply incapacitated and unable to play you can bet every dollar you’ve ever earned that he would say he would be honoured to have his son take his place. And the other members of Zeppeling know this and understand that the only person who could drum for them now is Jason - and now that he is clean and sober he’ll be amazing.

Robert Let It Out | 11/21/2007, 12:07 pm EST

On his official ws rp says that there is a good chance that there will be a full scale lz world tour “if things work out properly…”

Evan Ogden | 11/20/2007, 4:46 pm EST

Led Zep was the soundtrack of choice to my and many of my friends lives during high School in the mid to late seventies.
I played in a band who covered many Zep songs (that we could technically handle) but we could never reproduce the Hammer Of The Gods!
Saw Zep at the ill-fated Kingdome in Seattle in ‘76. It was a disappointing echo-plex of midrange mush. Really was a misrepresentation of what that band could produce in a more acoustically friendly environment.
First heard LZ on an AM radio station in ‘68, I thought Plant was some large black woman with a huge set of pipes…I was 8 years old and had never seen nor heard of the band before!
As a drummer I still feel Bonzo had the most impact on rock drumming of anyone. I LOVE the bass drum sound on “When the levee breaks” I still play a Ludwig snare because it reminds me of Bonhams’ “bark”.
Give Jason a chance… Its in his blood.
These guys must tour beyond London next year!

Mark Hackney in Seattle, WA US | 11/17/2007, 1:20 am EST

Ooops, I used “their” instead of “they’re” (damn spell check) Oh well, close enough for rock & roll :~)

Mark Hackney in Seattle, WA US | 11/17/2007, 1:08 am EST

I’m very excited about this tour even though I have no chance of attending. I was hooked on Zep the moment I heard them as a teenager. They were one of a handful of artists who inspired me to become a guitarist. Unfortunately, I never got to see them live.

I’m 45 now and have 2-teenagers and an 11-year old. Much to my surprise, my 17 & 11-year old are BIG Zeppelin fans. Apparently, A LOT of their friends are too.

So, even though I can’t afford to go to England to see Led Zeppelin, I’m very excited! I’m excited because music that was and is important to me is also important to my kids and that’s cool! Zeppelin was relevant then, their relevant now and they’ll be relevant 200 years from now. That makes me feel good.

I quite playing in bands several years ago but the guys from Zeppelin are still at it. In fact, many of the greats from the past are still at it. So while they’re a little older than they were in 1968-80, they’re still passionate and young at heart and that’s what rock & roll (and I think life) is all about! So YEAH for Zeppelin and YEAH for everyone who gets to see them! I’m very excited!

Why Jason Bohnam? | 11/15/2007, 10:29 pm EST

I’d like to heard this show…but honestly. Why Jason Bohnam? I’m sure he is a nice guy and all…but he isn’t on any of the albums I have…and well, he’s no where close to playing like his dad. Have you heard the band ‘Bohnam’? It’s really funny. I just don’t see him as being the next best thing to the original lineup.

HUGEzeppfan | 11/12/2007, 8:49 pm EST

i am 13 years old, i started listening to zepp about 4 years ago and loved them from the start. to me, led zeppelin is like a sports players favorite team, a politicians favorite candidate, a nerds favorite subject, a roller coaster fanatics favorite park, a music fan (but not as big as me) favorite band, a pimps favorite employee etc. combined! i f***in love them! jimmy page is the greatest guitarist ever, john bonham is the greatest drummer ever, robert plant is the greatest singer ever, and jpj is the greatest multi instrumentalist ever = supergroup…

ROGER CLEAVES | 11/6/2007, 12:14 am EST

I missed out in seeing Zep in there last tour. You had to mail for your tickets due to great demand. My freinds and I stayed up that night tickets went on for sale waiting to 4;00 am for the detroit freepress for the order form . We went straight to the post office and were certain we would have tickets.unfortunatly when we woke up later that day it was all oer the radio John died. We were lost. His son is the best one to take his place. And so what if there older they are still zepplin. My point if I had the chance I would take my 14 year old son who is a big fan to this concert.

Why a “one-time” show in London only? Why not a “one-time world tour” so that all of their fans who never had a chance to see them in concert could get to see this great band at least once? They would surely sell out every single arena. I’m 42, and my husband, 43, and this is the one band we regret never having had a chance to see live!

fatboy | 10/31/2007, 9:20 pm EST

Larflene | 10/29/2007, 8:36 pm EST

what i dont get is why people who dont like zep actually take time to read about the whole reunion thing, and then bash the band/fans on a web site! if you dont like the band keep it to yourself and dont go shoving it around and being immature! just grow up already. ASS! i would LOVE to see a reunion tour, and most people who read about all this do too. so if you dont like that, 1. dont read about it 2. dont put other people down because they’re excited about it.

Johnny B Goode | 10/26/2007, 7:28 pm EST

Jason Bonham seems like a good choice for drummer, and the show’ll be great, if I know anything about Led Zeppelin. I’m not just saying Jason’s a good choice because he’s Bonzo’s son, I saw his drumming and it’s pretty heavy.

Bobby G | 10/25/2007, 12:57 pm EST

I am 45 years old and love Zep, and all you ASS wipes that are so ignorant to understand that it doesnt matter if its not the same show as back in the 70’s. IT’s Led Zeppelin for God sake!! We all get old. But I would blessed to see them come to the states !!!

Like wow dude! regardless of whether its 05, 07, or 08 there is NO place on any music stage or rock tour for the band to cream themselves on stage…no way! i’m as big a zep fan as anyone but i gotta say AJ, your posting is off base…WAY off base dude! i dont condone you condoning a band…even zep…to cream off on stage!

AJ | 10/6/2007, 10:14 pm EST

Their live performances have always been ‘hit or miss’. I think that Plant is playing it safe until after the show. If it goes well (and I believe that it will), then they will most likely go on a limited tour, just as Cream did in ‘05.

ballsack! | 10/4/2007, 8:29 pm EST

dear zep,
like the beatles the whole was greater than the sum of the parts. yes, unlike the beatles whereby john and paul carried 70% of the show, george carried 20%, and ringo carried 10%, each of the overall whole i.e., while in zep bob and jimbo carried 80% plus, still, coming back as zep without the drummer as catalyst and the bassist now with a different attitude (he thinks he was worth more than the history books show), this reunion is like comparing road apples to apples. IT ‘AINT THE SAME ZEP! And i’m not talking about age here…great bands get better with age as is evidenced by the many still out there pulling in more bucks per year…and then some…than the rest of the new bands combined. and, the old bands were WAY more creative in their songs (zep plagarism taken into the equation) than any of the new shit out there for the past 20 years.
so…dear zep (i.e., whats left of you)…DONT COME BACK!

Plant says: "NO TOUR" | 9/29/2007, 1:32 pm EST

I APOLOGIZE!!!
i only posted the plany announcement that zep is’nt going to tour just to screw with your heads. I AM SORRY!!!
i am the gardener that takes care of plants plants an plants country cottage on plants estate in plants home country of england. i am a plant there for NME to plant more than plants but to also listen to plant talking when plant visits the garden to plant his plants that he has a preference for. anyway, plant was talking to plants friends while plant was planting plants and i heard him say, “No way!” he was referring to a weed in his garden and not the zep tour but i added the rest then posted here. SORRY!

beyond reason | 9/29/2007, 1:25 pm EST

your posting is beyond reason, im smart. in answer to your doubts and obviously untrusting…suspicious…natu re, im smart (’im smart’…an oxymoron of a name if ever there was one based entirely on your posting), “one must never doubt the power and influence of the kwisatz haderach” that you have done so is testiment to you having a lack of confidence in the universal order of things. why…i remember only recently as i stood watching both a zep concert in 1971 and simultaneously in 2008 (i can you know) and thinking, “why is it that plant cuts so many farts on stage?” the answer to which is simple (for me i.e., but not for the likes of you im smart), it is this, “because he can, you know.” STOP your doubting and join my followers and never doubt again!

beyond reason | 9/28/2007, 11:57 am EST

Ummmm….well…..unless you’re going to call Robert Plant a liar….I guess all we have to go on is the lead singer of the band saying “NO GO” to a tour.

Anything beyond that WOULD be a surprise.

Plant says: "NO TOUR" | 9/28/2007, 9:57 am EST

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, and I was one that was really looking forward to a Led Zep tour, but it ain’t happening.

Robert Plant has issued the following statement 2 hours ago, found on the NME site:
———————– —–
“Led Zeppelin reunion: ‘We won’t tour’

Robert Plant quashes rumour of a full UK tour
2 hours ago
Robert Plant, frontman of the newly reformed Led Zeppelin, has quashed rumours that the band are set for a full UK tour.

So far the band have announced a single reunion show at the O2 Arena in London on November 26.

Speaking to The Daily Express, he explained that there would only be one show, then added: “We need to do one last great show, because we’ve done some shows, and they’ve been crap.”

Plant went on to explain that he was considering stepping away from live music completely after the November show.

“I know I’m getting on,” he said. “When I come back from touring I’m shocked to find a lot of my mates tend to be going to bed far too early, and that means I should probably be doing the same. Maybe I should stop having a good time and get old.”
———————– ———

Sorry, guys.
Unless you live in the UK - you ain’t gonna see them play.

With 80,000 hits PER MINUTE trying to get tickets, I am baffled as to why they wouldn’t play the states.

Oh well.
Another Zep tour rumor put to death. Sigh.

GO VAN HALEN !!!!

jjdyno | 9/27/2007, 9:38 am EST

You know, I just heard of this concert reunion thing today, 9/27, and I can’t tell you the excitement that I feel. How cool is this?
In trying to be better informed, I went to Rolling Stone for more information, only to find a bunch of malt-worm half-wits spouting garbage. Who cares what Robert Plant looks like at 60? Can he still sing? Absolutely. I saw him two years ago, and he was amazing. Finally, for the harpies who say the fans are being mistreated–you’re not a fan. You’re a bunch of hasty-witted louts. Any sane person with half of a musical bone in their body is excited beyond anything that has happened in music for three decades. The one-night-only show is for a fantastic cause, and the excitement for more shows is nirvana.

blah | 9/26/2007, 2:29 pm EST

I’m looking to buy a “special package” ticket, but I cant seem to find any mention of how to buy them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

rosie o'donnell | 9/24/2007, 10:09 pm EST

that last posting by keeper is a keeper.
plant is cutting a fart at all of us with this gig…right in our face! he’s not even trying to hide the fact he is using the fans as ass wipe for his own personal purpose. enjoy the smell fans because you ‘aint gonna get a show from zep this time around…they are WAY PAST IT!

keeper | 9/24/2007, 11:31 am EST

This is a one shot fund raiser. It is not a reunion. For one thing, Plant is too self absorbed by his solo work to ever consider doing a quality Zep reunion tour. This is ONE show to put charity funds into Plant’s favorite schools and such. The fans are the fools for thinking anything outside of this box. Jones was said to be the one holding out this time. Can you blame him? When Plant finally gives his ok on a one off fund raiser for his own interests (and Ahmets’s) but in actuality he can’t wait to get on tour singing a bunch of “crossover” semi country semi whatever songs that Zep fans have no interest in. Or even Plant fans, for that matter. But, hey, that’s the way it is. A true Zep tour would take a lot of work. The current Genesis tour boasts of three hour long shows. Could you imagine Plant doing three hour fun fest shows? No way. The really fun days of a Zep show have been over since 1978.

pp | 9/23/2007, 3:21 pm EST

What do you expect him too look like at almost 60 years of age.

If his voice is toast then there is no reason to see them though. They are going to command absolute top dollar and if they cant deliver on an top of shelf perfomance then they should just bag it.

I read closer to 30 million. But who’s counting. The site crashed. Now, this site is crashing also. And when Zep performs, they will crash too. I’m tired…I think I’ll go crash.

theodds | 9/20/2007, 8:13 pm EST

ok…i think this zep site is toast. everything that can or should be said about zep getting it together again has been said. i for one am going back to listening to the greatest vocalist of all time…Peter Noone. He is also a great songwrite. I mean, just read something from the best lyric of all time, “‘oim ‘enery the 8th ‘oi am ‘oi am,,,’oim ‘enery the 8th ‘oi am,,,’oi been married 7 toimes before,,,and everyone was an ‘enery,,,etc” Need I write more? Just try…try…and compare this quality lyric with e.g., that idiot song called the immigrant song…eh? No comparison.

Anonymous | 9/20/2007, 12:49 pm EST

ok, I gotta say this, cause I`m tired of people bashing the band. led zeppelin DID “borrow” some songs from some artists, but have you actually listened to the original songs?, some people like atack the band by saying they stole the song, but if you listen carefully you would find out, is that in most they only lifted part of the lyrics of the songs, like with whole lotta love, people listen that they were sued, and instantly think that they stole the whole song(The original is called YUO NEED LOVE written by willie dixon, if you want to listen to it to compare them go to http://www.goear.com/list en.ph p?v=0208835) , but the riff was 100% original, and that riff was the one that made the song great, same thing happens with IN MY TIME OF DYING,

Red Rocker | 9/19/2007, 10:44 pm EST

I am still really pissed of at Diamond Dave! What are the odds on that?

it was not the site that crashed it was any sense of self-respect thodds had left by posting such a post. lets face it, theodds is a loser with a meaningless life.

the odds are not that high about theodds would do such a thing. lets face it, theodds has no life and exists only to surf sites like this to give theodds life any semblence of meaning.

wayward son | 9/19/2007, 10:37 pm EST

what are the odds that someone would post on this site with a name called theodds about the odds on responding to a wanker posting with a wanker name called wayward son? the odds must be high that theodds tried to be odds on about whether theodds was going for or against the odds that wayward son had a life or played the odds against it. eh? what are the odds on that?

r. plant | 9/19/2007, 10:31 pm EST

theodds | 9/19/2007, 5:52 pm EST

Technically, number of hits are not the same as number of visits. One visitor can hit a web site an endless number of times. Good luck though to those who managed to register.

miccc | 9/19/2007, 5:33 pm EST

Actually, in a 24 hour period alone, the site received 120 million hits, with 25 million getting through to register. That was just the first day. They were still getting well over 60,000 hits a minute 2 days later, so it’s safe to say that the demand for even 3/4 of Zeppelin is unprecedented in rock history. No entertainment act in the world could remotely approach these numbers. Gratifying to see that the greatest rock band in history is still unmistakably the most popular band in the world.

jimmy p | 9/19/2007, 4:53 pm EST

Hey j, glad to hear that someone loves Yoko Ono as much as we in Zep do. We’d love to invite her to tour with us, but we’re afraid of being upstaged.

theodds | 9/19/2007, 2:44 pm EST

wayward son | 9/19/2007, 1:03 pm EST

So 20 million people tried to get tix to a 20,000 seat concert? WOW!

Safe to say, Led Zeppelin has only GROWN in popularity since their heyday! Shit, I’m not sure if they had 20 million fans back in the 70’s!!

Great to see, and I’m glad that some of these bands from yesteryear are resurfacing. Especially with all the CRAP out right now pretending to be music.

j | 9/19/2007, 12:54 pm EST

LED ZEPPELIN is great, but I’m a big Julian Lennon fan. I love Yoko Ono, too - she’s hot! Even though most think she looks like a cabbage patch kid.

Sometimes, when I’m alone, I listen to Julian Lennon and ABBA. Makes me feel more feminine, and I can really get in touch with my inner-woman.

j | 9/19/2007, 12:06 pm EST

A Led Zep reunion with Jason Bonham replacing his dad is a fantastic idea! It could only be topped by a Beatles reunion including Julian Lennon and Dahni Harrison…

wayward son | 9/19/2007, 11:48 am EST

Good - thank you RS.

I don’t want to read all this stupid BS anyway, and as far as David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar is concerned - YOU BOTH SUCK when compared to Robert plant.

can’t wait to see this happen. I’ve been hoping for this moment for a looooooong time!

I forgot to add that Hermans Hermits are my favourite band but I doubt they will ever tour again…pity. I mean, just compare the vocals of Peter Noone to Robert Plant…no friggin contest! Noone beats the pants off Plant every single time!

other WISE | 9/19/2007, 11:08 am EST

If you go to some of these ticket broker websites, they actually advertise LED ZEP tickets.

The one I just visited said,
“when tour dates are announced, get your tickets here”.

Do they know something we don’t yet?? It is reasonable to expect them to tour, so I hope to hear some info on that soon.

Diamond Dave | 9/18/2007, 11:38 pm EST

What…you’ll bring the ‘weed’ Red Rocker? You ARE a fucking weed!

Red Rocker | 9/18/2007, 4:55 pm EST

Now do the right thing, Diamond Dave….take a seat with me and let’s allow this most awesome LED ZEPPELIN moment to be enjoyed to the fullest. It’s their show.

Don’t worry. I’LL bring the weed this time.

Red Rocker | 9/18/2007, 4:52 pm EST

Dave was great in STARTER Van Halen, but it took a man like me - the Red Rocker - to provide Van Halen with all of their biggest hits.

While Dave was busy flopping at acting, flopping as a DJ, and flopping as a paramedic - I was taking the band to new, unchartered heights.

So now that they’ve gotten the first guy back, I say “Come On Dave, Finish What ‘Ya Started”. After all, it only took you 20+ years to wake-up and come to your senses.

I have to wonder though…does smoking bunk weed make one lose their hair? Because I have more hair on my skull at 60 than Dave has at 50!

You’ll never see Sam sporting a pseudo-Sting haircut, that’s fo’ sho’!

CABO WABO, baby!
And….I’ll be keeping the bass player with me.

Diamond Dave | 9/18/2007, 4:30 pm EST

Man, this has been colorful out here today! yeah. Sam, Gary, come see how its done, take notes, no hard feelings, I’m a singer by trade, its how I put food on the plate. Happy Hour, have a few libations, put my back against the record machine, if I may quote myself, throw on music from ABBA to ZZ Top, a little KD Lang thrown in between, marinate it with Jack Daniels, grab the gal that catches your fancy, & come out & see us when we come to one of the biggest 23 hamlets in the US. Leave the heavy lifting to me. I wouldn’t wish listen to the Cheroney Van Halen years on a canine. We’re back friends. Same tunes you’ve heard on a Saturday afternoon at your local Motorola, only coming at you threw stacks of Marshalls. This is more evasive than any download or pickpocket. Off to grab that little redhead gal I saw at lunch today.

Diamond Dave | 9/18/2007, 3:48 pm EST

WaaaOWAh!!…Bunk Weed, like a bad comedian, I forgot my own lines man. Thanks Sam. Remember, I’d never open for you. You’re lyrics read like a Hallmark card man. Glen Cheroney, Sam, they are singers in Van Halen, but I’m THE singer. Those songs I sang on are more familiar than the Nike Swoosh. Think I’ll ease the seat back, go post on the VH blog now, its got more rhythm man, put my Van Halen LPs next to those Led Zep Record albums, & they’ll melt baby. You can feel the heat off those grooves. What do you think of that, talk to me! those songs belong in the meat packing district, bozzy bozzy bop! love those lines up the back of the Stockings, to this day.

Gary Cherone | 9/18/2007, 3:29 pm EST

I never got to see Led Zep, and I bombed in Van Halen. I couldn’t shine Dave’s OR Sammy’s shoes.

I guess I’ll just forever be known as the singer of that all-time WUSS song, “More Than Words” in that all-time WUSS band Extreme.

I wonder if Led Zep needs another roadie? If so, I GOT A JOB!!!

Red Rocker | 9/18/2007, 3:23 pm EST

Shit, I was watching LED ZEP live while Diamond Dave was still watching Sesame Street!
I learned almost as much from Robert Plant as Dave has learned from me.

They just don’t make ‘em any better than Led Zeppelin. I can remember opening for them back when I played with Montrose - man! - what a great show!
Even though I’ve played with Eddie, I’d give my entire stock of Cabo Wabo Tequila to share a stage with Jimmy Page!

Now if you’ll excuse me…I have to go sell a dime bag of bunk weed to Diamond Dave - the world’s greatest paramedic!

Diamond Dave | 9/18/2007, 2:15 pm EST

Folks, if Led Zeppelin is playing on the night we are, then Eddie Van Heineken is on his own, I’m grabbin’ my gal, shining up my Keith Richard’s merit badge & headin’ down, listenin’ to the same tunes I’ve been hearing pumped out of a Chevy truck in the Burger King parking lot the last 35 summers. These songs are more familiar than the roof of my mouth. These songs are parts & parcel of why i got into show business to begin with, reminds me when I saw them with Alex in Milwaukee, me & Alex grabbed some of Milwaukee’s finest, & I aint talkin’ bout no damn beer. I’ll jump into my jeans, get my gal to suck the air out of the bottom of my designer jeans, grab some dime store weed & head to the show. Meet me in the parking lot, this is the makings of one large barbeque if you get what I’m saying. Watercooler material here, Led Zeppelin, a bunch of syllabols, it swings, like Santana. I’m more hopped up than a 10 year old on sugar cereal breakfast & cinnamon toast….Sammy who?

LED ZEP MANIAC! | 9/18/2007, 1:41 pm EST

Oh yeah….sweet!
I heard this may turn into a tour. Yeah!!!!!

Jason Bonham is a pretty good drummer, too. May as well keep it in the family!

LED ZEP! LED ZEP! LED ZEP! LED ZEP!

FuckYou | 9/18/2007, 1:17 pm EST

Bonham ’s son.

Eddie Van Halen | 9/18/2007, 1:15 pm EST

If LED ZEP plays on the same night we do, then David Lee is going to have to learn the guitar awfully fast!

I’LL be at the Zep show.

Now…where did I leave that Heineken??
Damn it, Wolfie - you’re too young still!!!!

All The Wiser | 9/18/2007, 1:11 pm EST

Dan, it’s going to be Jason Bonham on skins.

No offense to Dave Grohl, but having Jason on drums makes it as close to the original as you’ll get.

Dan McFarland | 9/18/2007, 1:01 pm EST

What I wanna know is, who’ll be seated on the drum throne? That’s my only question…Dave Grohl could fit the bill, I mean the guy’s a fan and knows the entire Zep catalog by heart!

Ronnie Van Zant | 9/18/2007, 12:57 pm EST

Shoot! You’d have to be a one legged dog trying to take a piss on a frozen pond not to know what LED ZEPPELIN has done for the music world. Damn straight!

If I hadn’t died in that plane crash, me and Lynyrd Skynyrd could’ve opened a show for them sometime. Whiskey for everyone - and man! - can that Jimmy Page drink the Jack…woooo-weeeee!

Eddie Van Halen | 9/18/2007, 12:53 pm EST

Hey - plain and simple - if LED ZEP is playing on the same night we are, then Wolfie is going to have to learn the guitar real damn fast!

I’ll be at the LED ZEP show, watching the masters.

Now….where did I leave that Heineken??? Damn it, Dave!

Max Wise | 9/18/2007, 12:10 pm EST

Ian Rhodes | 9/18/2007, 11:50 am EST

Recently saw Plant at a charity event signing a ten foot guitar in London and the bloke was letting a large number of farts rip. He obviously cannot help himself so why make such a big thing about it?

MAGX | 9/18/2007, 11:40 am EST

I feel bad for Robert Plant that everyone is making fun of his farting. Lets face it, farting is natural. Whats funny about it? I have heard him farting on stage and its no big deal. I listen to the music and let the farts waft over my head while I keep my nose covered with my pantys.

Plant | 9/18/2007, 11:30 am EST

For crying out loud! So what if I do have a flatulance problem, so what? Is it any of your business? Why do you have to write about it in public? Ok, so I cut farts on stage, so what? Ok, so I like the smell of my own, so what? Ok, so I light my farts on fire with a match when I cut them in the bath, so what? Farting is cool!

I am the official and long time fart sniffer…not you!

Joyce Fleming | 9/18/2007, 11:15 am EST

I was at the Page/Plant concert and
it is true that Plant was farting the entire show but the guy probably has stomach problems so it’s nothing to laugh at. He still has the best voice in rock.

Out on tiles - face down passed out on the bathroom floor, John Bonham.

Xmas day, ‘68 they were asked to go to the US, the next day they played in Denver, a gig that was supposed to be the Jeff Beck Group, who cancelled….Love the psychedelic Tele. I’ve read that Joe Walsh had given Page his main Les Paul as well.

Heres a Led Zep story for you.
My very best memory of a Led Zep concert was the night I was right at the front of the stage and Plant moves the mike away from his face to cough. Anyway, he coughs and then spits a giant lump of cough shit from his throat and it lands right on my forehead! Wow! How lucky can a guy get? People either side of me start to fight me to get this precious gem on my forehead but a few stitches, punches, kicks, screams later, I scraped it off my forehead and put it in my pocket and took it home. Now each night I look at it, smell it, lick it a little, and remember how much I love Led Zep.
Hey, do any of you have as good a Led Zep story as this?

pretty good after 19 years and when a concert is announced millions of people love led zeppelin and are very exicited to go and see them.

MAGX | 9/17/2007, 11:41 pm EST

I think most people don’t realize led zep’s songs had a very cletic background/blues. I think there the best band ever.Grand was not right to say it would go over like a led ballon. I feel bad about the lives of some of the members famliy. but great never go away. I’ve been a fan sence 1973 and always will. I’ve been to europe and frist hand understand the hell the wars have done. Thats what I feel in SOME of there songs. (9-18-07)irozap66@cs.com please return my note when you can.MAGX

how immature

James Page | 9/17/2007, 11:10 pm EST

…i remember once we were doing a gig for the Queen of England when there was a silent bit in the song (you know, the silent bit in that idiot song stairway to heaven) and the Queen was like, smiling as if she was enjoying it. All of a sudden, Plant cuts a corker, a real rose, a live one, it was sulphur incarnate, rotting eggs, slaughterhouse eleven (you get the picture). Like…’HELLO PLANT!’ And I’m standing downwind of the fucker then it hits me! Tears welled up in my eyes! I felt faint! I even felt touch again in my fingers as they touched the guitar strings (I had’nt felt touch since my last LSD adventure…BONUS). Anyway…it was a CORKER Class ‘A’ fart! That same night Bonham bites the dust and I am sure it was because he was still out of it from the after effects of the fart. Then the base players cops an attitude so I fired the fucker! Then I thought, ‘why am i standing downwind of this smelly self-proclaimed viking wanker…this band is toast’! That was the night I called it quits for Led Zep. One fart too many from Plant. Thats how the west was blown.

is Page a Rock n Roll Genius? In the Lennon/McCartney, Hendrix patheon? Great song writing, talented guitarist, mastermind of the Zeppelin aura, great producer. Rock God, indeed. But musical genius?

Roy Harper | 9/17/2007, 2:20 pm EST

some cynicism, some realism. I think most artists, music or otherwise, their creative peaks are in their 20’s & early 30’s, with exceptions of course. Its when the ideas & energy is all flowing, they aren’t rehashing yet. They are hungry, brash, it is the essense of R&R! I do think Zep would be more creative & push themselves harder in the studio if they were to create new material….if the Stones were a new Band in 1989 on Steel Wheels, would you be a big fan if that was their catelogue, from Steel Wheels on? Singles like “Streets of Love”. (just an example)…a few nuggets in a sea of mediocrity. They are good live if you give a ton of consessions. They are not “Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out” down & dirty anymore. Some of that is ok, you mature, but to me, put on a live album of theirs in hte last 10 years(they put one out for each tour…zzz), terribly watered down, Mick mailing it in vocally, even relaxing with some Earl Grey tea while the backup singers sing “hooonkey tonk women” chorus. Its fun to go, big event, but musically spent. I don’t want to see Zeppelin in such a state. I wasn’t impressed by their Clarksville CD(do people like that one?) or concert they played on MTV at that time. Though, live, it might have packed more punch than the TV.

ken v. | 9/17/2007, 2:00 pm EST

a bigger bang and endless wire were both good lp’s i think…people are so cynical.

FuckYou | 9/17/2007, 1:55 pm EST

Although, I do not like Led Zeppelin as much as most of you, I know they are true innovators. But I like AC/DC, VanHalen (not Van Hagar) and (old)Metallica better. And I think we can surely say that VanHalen and Metallica are innovators too.

Roy Harper | 9/17/2007, 12:15 pm EST

of course, one night shouldn’t make or break them as far as opinion is concerned, on a night they probably didn’t reherse much etc, & had to share the stage with others for an Allstar jam(zzz). Levee breaks is one of my favorites too, & they rearranged it, but it would be so hard to recreate the studio verision. (I don’t think they performed that song live in their HeyDay). I am probably harping too much on the energy & age thing. AT Live Aid, they were sloppy, but it was still somewhat youthful. I can bare some sloppy moments, or missed notes if there is steam coming off the stage, as opposed to hitting the notes on guitar, but with no emotion. I’m sure they can conjure up some “mojo”. One last visit to Metastopholis might do the trick.

Me Wise Me | 9/17/2007, 12:03 pm EST

Harper, you’re right. That WAS a very watered down version of “When
The Levee Breaks” (one of my all-time Zep favs).

Then again - that was a fairly watered down R&R induction show, too.

If seeing them was based on that particular performance, and the Live Aid debacle - I wouldn’t.
But every band is allowed a bad show now and then. They’ll be just fine.

Me Wise Me | 9/17/2007, 11:52 am EST

Grendel said: “Show me the money!!! At least the Stones and the Who came up with new material.”

First of all, for the MILLIONETH time now - it is a BENEFIT concert for an educational fund - so you don’t know what you’re talking about.
Perhaps YOU could BENEFIT from some EDUCATION.

Did you buy the latest Stones and Who albums? If you did, they’re milking YOUR money.
Since neither has put out a good album in years, I would just as soon see them tour without them supporting a new album.
NOBODY out there goes to see those bands based on new releases, so you’re either stoned or stupid.

WHO CARES if Led Zep puts an album out or not? With 20 MILLION trying to get tickets to a 20,000 seat venue just to see them play all their OLD material - I would suggest they hardly need new recordings.

And once again, if you don’t like the idea - DON’T GO TO SEE THEM and DON’T COME HERE with your dimestore comments!

Roy Harper | 9/17/2007, 11:49 am EST

Not nice at all what VH has done to Anthony, not listing him as a song writer anymore. I just recently heard M.McDonald had a hand in writing “I’ll wait”, didn’t realize that.

I agree too, Zep took those original songs & made them their own, as someone wrote. Dazed & Confused in particular. And, I’m a bit mistaken on “babe I’m going to Leave you”, while they were inspired by Joan Baez’s version, it wasn’t her song either, its listed as traditional, so they just stuck their names on it. “black mtn. side”, that is an instrumental Page copied note for note nearly, surprised he didn’t give credit. That wouldn’t fly today, but again, Zep pumped steriods into these songs, & obviously honed their own song writing skills as well…I’ll simply have to disagree re: the live show though, while it may be enjoyable & not a fall on their face travesty, I just think you’d have to give too much benefit of the doubt. I just watched “when the levee breaks” on AOL, from their R&R Hall of Fame inception, & I don’t see it. Its bland & in my opinion tired, not at all in the same league energy wise from even ‘79, & I expect that. And that’s roughly 10 yrs ago that clip. I’m a huge fan, but I have to cringe watching Page do his moves, like when I see Jagger now. I’m in the minority I think though.

Alexander | 9/17/2007, 10:27 am EST

saw Robert Plant play in Toronto and that show was absolutly amazing. I love led Zeppelin but i wasn’t expecting much from Plant, him being so old and all. Anyways i can honestly say he and the band put on one of the greatest shows i’ve seen. I don’t know how anyone can doubt they’ll do a whole tour.

Thank God for led Zeppelin!

Me Wise Me | 9/17/2007, 9:06 am EST

Harper - I think you misunderstood my response regarding your VH example.

I wasn’t trying to “one up” you - I saw that you didn’t include Michael Anthony in the VH song writing credits thing - but my response was based on VH using THEIR OWN writing credit for “You Really Got Me” - which is the song you used as an example - and one that actually belongs to The Kinks (which I’m sure you know).

I only said it was a “bad example” because VH can’t even credit THEIR OWN band members with song writing anymore, let alone crediting a band they “borrowed” an entire song from.
Hell, they never even bothered to credit Michael McDonald for writing most of “I’ll Wait” off of “1984″! Shameful.

In my opinion, that’s as bad (if not worse) as “borrowing” riffs from other musicians.

Me Wise Me | 9/17/2007, 8:39 am EST

To anyone posting the “They’re definitely going to tour in ‘08″ stuff - I and everyone else here would LOVE to believe that - but can you please print your source(s) for this info?

And no…sorry…merely stating you’re a “close, personal friend of JPJ” doesn’t quite cut it.

It’s hard to imagine they WON’T tour, but we’ve been down this road before plenty of times, and I want something substantial to confirm such great news.

Anyone?? Speak up!

Me Wise Me | 9/17/2007, 8:36 am EST

Little Timmy - I’m an “idiot” bacause I happened to know that Jake Holmes wrote “I’m confused” - which later materialized as Zep’s “Dazed and Confused”???

Isn’t it time you got off mommy’s computer now and did your homework? After all, if YOU knew anything about Led Zep (and I know about all there is to know about my fav - and GREATEST - rock band of all time) than YOU could’ve answered that question when it was asked.

Now…go milk your dog, and try passing the 6th grade again.

Led Zeppelin reunion???
Woooow…
Hope the reunion tour will follow

DADAPHONE | 9/16/2007, 8:06 pm EST

I saw Robert Plant and the Stange Sensation at the Paramount in Oakland and if Led Zep can bring that kind of electricity to a performance they will be doing well. To my ear, there was nothing lacking in Plant’s voice on the classics he performed.

Herb | 9/16/2007, 5:56 pm EST

I don’t care if Plant’s voice isn’t what it used to be. I don’t care if Page doesn’t bring it like he used to. I don’t care if John Bonham is no longer there. I’ve been waiting to see Led Zeppelin for over a quarter of a century.

zeprulz | 9/16/2007, 5:14 pm EST

I admire anyone who abides by their “own” rules and speaks on their own behalf. As for Led Zeppelin, I’ll be willing to bet that they will put on a great concert performance, regardless of their age. I saw Page & Plant in the late 90’s, and it was the surprise concert of the year…they exceeded my expectations.

Grendel | 9/16/2007, 5:07 pm EST

Show me the money!!! At least the Stones and the Who came up with new material.

The Dude Abides | 9/16/2007, 4:57 pm EST

Are you kidding johnny? You obviosuly have’t seen Robert Plant in concert recently. He still sounds great! He hasn’t lost anything.

johnny | 9/16/2007, 4:30 pm EST

I think the recent Britney MTV music awards performance gives us a good preview of what this zep show will be like. Plant will certainly be lip-synching, but is so old he won’t be able to keep up with the sound. These guys are ancient; they belong in nursing homes.

Is there room for both Britney and Milli Villini as opening acts?

whatever h. | 9/16/2007, 2:26 pm EST

Yusuf al-Asi | 9/16/2007, 11:47 am EST

Robert Plant is the best rock singer on the planet! He is what made Zepellin the best rock band, not their average guitar player, Jimmy Page.

Mansour Assad El Sherif | 9/16/2007, 11:38 am EST

I believe that Zepellin is the best rock group in history. I hope they will come to Morocco. Robert Plant converted to Islam back in 1978 and Jimmy Page did so in 1982. Praise be to Allah.

Hai re Oxters | 9/16/2007, 11:21 am EST

yeah like, kashmir and you know like, that kind of stuff that zep did is like, that al sabir wanker wrote, sitting near the stage downwind of the the delicate aroma of a plant fart…wow! it reminds me of my many trips to the back streets of the middle east and the back doors of the women and men there. same sweet aroma. and all the while the music is like, just like zep stuff. like the women when they encourage the men to jihad, you know, ‘alalalalalalalalalalalalalala lalalalalalalalalala, ayeeayeeayeeayeeayeeayeeayeeay eeayeeayeeayeeayeeayee’ zep melodies all the way.

even now you dont get the message Amir Salaam. the reason i was farting all through the show was to send you a message to fuck-off! you were standing in front of 3 babes i wanted to lay after the show. you blocked my view. i thought that by cutting farts all night and getting the roadies to aim the fans so the smell would waft right accross your fucking nose that you would gag and leave. but…you s.o.b., you liked it…you liked it! i saw you sniffing all night and smiling after each sniff. you are a sicko. i thought i had seen it all in rock but you took the biscuit. now, you post this…are you nuts or are you one of those sickos who likes the smell of his own farts?

mountainside | 9/16/2007, 12:51 am EST

There already is life on another planet - on Mars (odd beings they are, many of whom experience massive communication breakdown problems).

And that is definitely in no way better than Led Zeppelin, who are understood throughout the universe!

Noone knows this but they have been rehearsing for 18 months. A tour has always been planned, certainly well before Ahmet died.

I think the death really inspired them though…I think Ahmet was probabaly buggin them to do it. And they had an immense respect and affection for him.

Have fun seeing them in 2008!
