Check out our preview of Neil Young’s forthcoming album Chrome Dreams II, which is featured in our Fall Preview 2007 special report. In addition to giving you the scoop on the Canadian rock icon’s sequel to a record that never saw release, the piece now includes an MP3 of the tune “Ordinary People,” the gorgeous eighteen-minute epic Young originally recorded in 1988 and played frequently during that year’s This Note’s For You tour. “Ordinary People” will be released for the first time on Chrome Dreams II. Listen to the song and read the rest of our Young preview here.

I can’t wait to see Neil on tour this fall. I know he’ll never come to Utah, so I have to take a road trip up to Idaho. The song Ordinary People doesn’t really sound like Cortez, but it is very nice.
S.F. | 9/13/2007, 2:20 am EST
Lose the horns and musically it sounds like Crazy Horse in its glory days. The lyrics, however, are Ordinary. There’s no poignancy; no urgent point when singing about these “ordinary people.” I don’t feel like I should CARE about these Ordinary Everyday People. Nothing’s compelling. And at 18 minutes the song just plods. And plods…9 minutes was plenty.
Sounds like a beer run/bathroom break tune, Neil. Lose the horns. They don’t work here. Save the riff for another tune though.
Mr Turntable N' Princess Phone | 9/13/2007, 3:25 am EST
iggy pop is in his 60’s and he doesn’t look anything like that. nor does keith nor does mick
Turntable | 9/13/2007, 4:39 am EST
The role of Neil Young will be played by Jon Voight.
Ragman | 9/13/2007, 9:27 am EST
What’s all this crap about Neil’s age? Hey, reality check: Everybody gets old (unless death comes earlier in life). So take a good look at Neil–you’re looking at your future.
Freddy Mercury | 9/13/2007, 9:39 am EST
Neil Young is the only artist from the 60’s who has consistently explored new avenues with his music. He’s the only one left from the 60’s who creates relevant music.
Brkn | 9/13/2007, 11:08 am EST
Hey-
All you commenting on his appearance – being mean makes you so cool! So funny!
Give him a break – the guy had surgery for a freakin brain anurysm in 2006!
Jughead | 9/13/2007, 11:44 am EST
Grandpa? Grandpa? Why are you holding that guitar, grandpa? Have you forgotten to take your meds this morning, grandpa?
zeezuma | 9/13/2007, 11:46 am EST
Neil’s appearance is irrelavant; I don’t know many people in their 60’s that look like a 20 year old… His music is what counts as he continues to write and play great songs although “Ordinary People” can be found on many bootlegs… I can’t wait to hear the rest of the album and the songs played live on tour this fall…
Johnny | 9/13/2007, 1:12 pm EST
This is fantastic. Can’t wait for the entire disc. Too bad it doesn’t have a compilation of the original “Chrome Dreams” bundled with it.
Neil’s got the wah-wah back, and as far as his age, he’s got more youthful vigor and no shortage of ideas than lots of young-uns, folks.
lizardking | 9/13/2007, 1:15 pm EST
Fuck you Fuck you Fuck you and Fuck you, Neils the King. This Album just kinda prove hes still kicking ass and taking names. Long live Neil

Mule | 9/13/2007, 1:54 pm EST
I have every Neil Young album, and I fo’ sho’ will be grabbing this one up as well…regardless of the fact that he, in this picture, resembles Andy Rooney.

Please, let him do the things he wants and likes to do and that’s making music for more than 40 years.
He’s one of the best.
Thanks Neil, for all your songs including OP which I like very much.

Don't be Denied | 9/13/2007, 6:22 pm EST
Another classic Neil Young tune and guitar extravaganza in the vein of “Hurricane”,”Powderfinger”,”Do wn By The River” and “Cowgirl In The Sand”.Love the horns.Keep on Rockin Neil!!!!!!
Anonymous | 9/13/2007, 10:15 pm EST
That picture looks more like Neil Diamond (aged about 15 years) or Jon Voight playing Neil Young in the movie “Crazy Horse & Me”
BF2 (buckfush2) | 9/14/2007, 12:37 am EST
Draft Neil for President in 08!
He’s what this country needs – an honest Rock&Roll leader in the Whitehouse.
One You Never Figure | 9/14/2007, 8:22 am EST
Neil IS ROCK n ROLL!
Jeff de Baun | 9/14/2007, 2:30 pm EST
Neil Young has always had one of the most irritating, high and whiny voices of them all – like nails on chalkboard. He’s also one of the ugliest rock stars of them all – runs a close second to Phil Spector. Rock stars are SUPPOSED to be young, thin and sexy. They need to retire before they bloat out or dry up. Are you listening Mr. Mick (Dancing Fool) Jagger?
Diamond Dave | 9/14/2007, 2:41 pm EST
I heard that Jared Nelson’s “Contraband Countryband” covered “Ordinary People” in 2006.
middlesister | 9/14/2007, 3:54 pm EST
Like neil said… its better to burn out than to fade away.
Burn on, neil.
tijuanabibles | 9/14/2007, 4:11 pm EST
The song is 30 yrs. old and its subjects…poverty, corporate greed, and racial strife still ring true today. Anybody else written anything that will hold up that long? Hands? As far as his appearence, you folks under 30 will be LUCKY to look that good in 2037.Also, you thought Neil looked bad? Did you see Steve Stills on the CSNY tour? Yow!
tch | 9/14/2007, 5:19 pm EST
neil also had fairly recent surgery for a brain aneurism, and he is still performing at concerts. give the man some credit…he is a national treasure.
Kruzinski | 9/14/2007, 5:27 pm EST
Aging is a fact of life.(Listen closely Jeff)Some artists can rock into old age and some can’t.I’m thinking that it probably has much more to do with the strength and durabiliy of the songs, as opposed to age.I watched Neil Young level an audience of 10,000 or so, during the Horde tour in 1997.Nobody really cared what he looked like then, and nobody really does now.Good music, regardless of gender, vocal style & range,or genre, has a lot more to do with a soul factor than it does anything else.Age is a state of mind, and one more thing:There’s been a lot of rock stars who were not thin and sexy in their heyday. That determination is solely defined by the individual who is viewing the object or person.
Crazy Horse | 9/14/2007, 7:26 pm EST
Hey Jeff.Neil is so sexy that Im a guy and straight….but I would fuck Neil!!!!there it is
cure58 | 9/15/2007, 5:33 am EST
Neil’s last really KILLER tune was “Rockin’ in the Free World”!!! Everyone loses it sooner or later.
wishka | 9/15/2007, 6:15 am EST
hi folks.
i believe you’re interested more to the best ass of the net than to the music.
so, change the website, please.
Leem | 9/15/2007, 7:33 am EST

not quite as good as the album TRANS. but its pretty good. NEIL, will you adopt me?!?!?!
Keith Hutchinson | 9/19/2007, 10:02 am EST
He is at the soul of every woman and man. He is our aurora borealis. Neil would not be Neil witout his signature voice. His lyrics, voice, stage movements and appearance make up the soul provider. Neil has never been a cookie cutter, cosmetic hollywood please the masses type of person. He is a time traveler. He is our native tongue. There is no other musician that I feel more deeply about than Neil.
david mclain | 9/26/2007, 1:29 am EST
Neil is real man. Long live Neil Young!

Bongi | 10/28/2007, 10:07 pm EST
Neil Young is a pathetic musician. His voice sucks and his guitar playing is childish. Jesus H. you’d figure after playing the damn instrument for have a century you be able to actually play something that resembles a melodic solo.
Dr. Doogie | 12/26/2007, 2:27 pm EST
Hey, Bongi. You would think that in the eleven years that you have been on the planet, you would have learned the difference between “have” and “half”. Listen to the master Neil, take some notes, and learn how rock & roll is done!
blackdog | 1/13/2008, 10:04 pm EST
To follow up on Crazy Horse’s comment. I’m a guy and I’m straight and to paraphrase Richard Pryor, “Neil Young’s so fine I want to suck his daddy’s dick.”
Sergio A. | 2/9/2008, 3:36 pm EST
I’m playin’ this song non-stop for hours and hours. It’s an epic and tells the story of a people. And it is so gorgeous!!! Give the guy a break. And all the non-sense about his appearance? Wake up, people, and learn to respect those who really care about the people.
jort | 2/20/2008, 4:39 pm EST
why is everyone commenting about his age. christ, everyone gets old. even you. he looks like any other person in his 60’s too me. just because you’re twelve years old doesn’t mean you’ll look like that forever..
jort | 2/20/2008, 4:41 pm EST
oh and I saw him live last sunday in amsterdam.. the king still has it.
