Led Zeppelin to Play Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert on November 26 in London

9/12/07, 11:10 am EST

The rumors are true: On November 26th, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham will perform at a tribute to late Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun at the 02 Arena in London. According to a press release, Zeppelin will headline the event, which will also feature music by Pete Townshend, Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, Foreigner, and Paolo Nutini. (More performers are almost certain to be announced.) Rumors that a Zeppelin reunion show was in the works took off when flyers were posted around London announcing the sale of tickets to a Led Zeppelin concert at the arena. Profits from the event will go to the Ahmet Ertegun Educational Fund. The Web sites for both the 02 arena and ahmettribute.com (where the ticket lottery is located) have already crashed due to excessive traffic. Read the full press release (which includes quotes from Plant and some of the other performers) below:

TRIBUTE TO AHMET ERTEGUN
NOVEMBER 26, 2007
O2 ARENA, LONDON

Harvey Goldsmith Announces A Tribute Concert To The Late Ahmet Ertegun In Aid Of The Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund

LONDON — One of the most eagerly awaited concerts of the decade will celebrate the life and work of Ahmet Ertegun, founder of Atlantic Records and much missed mentor to some of the greatest names in music.

Profits from this amazing show will go to the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund which provides students with annual scholarships to universities in the UK, USA and Turkey. In addition, a music scholarship open to all will be established at Ravensbourne College in the UK.

The incomparable Led Zeppelin will headline the tribute to the man who founded Atlantic Records in 1947. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones will be joined by Jason Bonham, the son of their late drummer John Bonham.

In addition, Pete Townshend, Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, Foreigner and Paolo Nutini, all touched by Ertegun’s guiding hand over the years, will play on the night. Paolo was the final British artist that Ahmet mentored.

It will be a tribute from UK artists that Ertegun worked with in a 60 year career.

Tickets – £125

Due to the anticipated overwhelming demand for this concert, tickets will be available by ballot only.

Fans should register their names at www.ahmettribute.com

Names will then be chosen at random. There will be seating and standing tickets and fans will be able to express a preference at the website.

Due the expected unprecedented demand, tickets will be limited to 2 per successful applicants per household.

Tickets will not be available from any other source. Please do not take adverts or publicise any company who claims to have tickets. They will not be given any. Please advise the public not the purchase tickets from any unscrupulous source.

Tributes to Ahmet

Mica Ertegun, Ahmet’s wife and president of The Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund, commented: “Ahmet attributed his success to his excellent education, and his ability to recognize innovative artists that touched us all. It was his wish to endow music and liberal Arts scholarships that would enable gifted children to reach their highest creative potential. The Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund was founded with that goal. He would be very proud
that Led Zeppelin have chosen to re-unite and headline a benefit concert in his name featuring so many of his friends. I would like to thank all of the artists for their generous contribution to help make Ahmet’s vision a reality.”

Robert Plant, Led Zeppelin: “During the Zeppelin years, Ahmet Ertegun was a major foundation of solidarity and accord. For us he WAS Atlantic Records and remained a close friend and conspirator – this performance stands alone as our tribute to the work and the life of our long standing friend.”

Mick Jones, Foreigner: “Ahmet’s combination of charm, humour, irreverence and above all his great passion for music made getting to know him one of the brightest highlights of my life.”

Paolo Nutini: “Meeting Ahmet Ertegun in New York 2 years ago was a complete honour. He touched my life with his amazing personality and opened a few doors when I was starting my career. He even invited me to sing with Ben E King and Robert Plant at Montreux last year as part of a celebration of his musical life. He was a special guy, a real gentleman and it’s such a shame he’s gone but a massive tribute that all his music lives on – and will do forever. God bless Ahmet.”

Harvey Goldsmith CBE: “Ahmet introduced me to America when I first started promoting. He became a friend and was my mentor. Our Industry deeply misses such a giant of music. It is a fitting tribute that these great artists have all come together to perform in his memory. The proceeds of the evening will go to The Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund for student scholarships. One of these scholarships will be for a music student in the UK each year.”

Bill Curbishley, Trinifold management: “To have had Ahmet regard me as one of his close friends over the past 40 yrs was indeed a rare privilege. To be involved in setting up this event, plus a music trust in his name and in his spirit is also a great honour and privilege for me.”

Now it’s finally time for Jeff Beck to reunite with The Yardbirds.
Led Zeppelin, Cream and The Yardbirds should all tour concurrently. Fans can see England’s three greatest guitarists in the same year. History indeed !

Josh | 9/12/2007, 11:35 am EST

dear Brien,

don’t be greedy.

Jon | 9/12/2007, 11:35 am EST

I don’t know as much about the Yardbirds nowadays, but I do know that Page and Plant seem to be a bloated & tamer version of their former selves, and Clapton has long since sacrificed his Cream glory days for slick commerciability….he himself even said he’s lost it and can’t play like he used to. So I dunno how much of a treat seeing all those guys nowadays (including this Zep one-off) would be…I think they all should just leave well enough alone.

Francisco Valdes | 9/12/2007, 11:36 am EST

Im sure they dont look as young as they do on that photo. Still, to see Zeppelin play will be great. salud!….

YOU HAVE A GOOD POINT THERE JON….BUT I SAY THROW THREE SHEETS TO THE WIND AND ROCK THE FUCK ON!!!!

marnr67 | 9/12/2007, 11:41 am EST

yeah, um… why is this not the lead article?

birddogger | 9/12/2007, 11:48 am EST

Okay, so regarding Foreigner…are they going to reunite with their original (6 members) or classic (4 members, from the “4″ period) lineups, or is it going to be the current lame roster which consists of Mick Jones with a bunch of people who never played on any of their classic albums, including (gasp) Jason Bonham? And the other burning question…couldn’t Jason Bonham have landed a better gig while waiting out a Zeppelin Reunion than Foreigner?! Currently playing county fairs and Ribfests nationwide?

APW | 9/12/2007, 11:48 am EST

The song remains the same at last

me | 9/12/2007, 11:55 am EST

can’t wait for this show.

Z | 9/12/2007, 12:04 pm EST

why y’all so cynical?? this is a one off return from the the greatest rock and roll band of all time. woop yeh!!! now how do i rig the ballot??

Reunion Year - 2007 | 9/12/2007, 12:06 pm EST

Led Zep , Van Halen , Police , Genesis ?????? What more ???

Mike from Iowa | 9/12/2007, 12:08 pm EST

So how many songs do you think they’ll play? If this is a multi-act thing, will it be like a Live-Aid set…3 or 4 songs?

All I can say is: PAY PER-VIEW THIS MOTHERFUCKER!!!

Jughead | 9/12/2007, 12:29 pm EST

Only one show? Why can’t they fly across “the pond” and play some dates here. I’ve been growing some top quality weed just for an occasion like this.

Scott | 9/12/2007, 12:31 pm EST

David Gilmour from Pink Floyd is 61 and still plays and sings exactly the same as 30 odd years ago. Plants voice sounds the same just older if you listen to his recent solo stuff and Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones have been playing and gigging regularly so they should be just as good as they were.

Jason | 9/12/2007, 12:46 pm EST

As much as I’d like to attend I’m inclined to agree with Jon, it ain’t 1975 anymore.

GrantG | 9/12/2007, 1:08 pm EST

this must be popular otherwise the webserver would respond to my attempts to register. Communication Breakdown indeed !

keithmoon | 9/12/2007, 1:19 pm EST

who’s jason bonham?

Craig | 9/12/2007, 1:26 pm EST

I take it everyone else is having problems registering for this gig on the ahmet website? This is quite infuriating!

Anthony Pittarelli | 9/12/2007, 1:31 pm EST

apparently mick jagger is also playing this show, how is anyone going to actually get tickets?

js | 9/12/2007, 1:33 pm EST

whens pink floyd reforming

ian s | 9/12/2007, 1:33 pm EST

John Paul Jones is still a force to be reckoned with though, he`ll keep them driving on with his amazing bass playing

cindy | 9/12/2007, 1:38 pm EST

very frustrated about the website. Zepplin was a litte before my time but I have loved them always. After first time listening to them, was hooked. Now my 13 year old son has purchased their stuff!

Chris | 9/12/2007, 1:39 pm EST

here’s hoping they get the taste for it again and announce a world tour. one date aint enough especially at the shitty O2 arena, why not Wembley or Knebworth? Not a cat in hells chance of getting tickets

iKNOWiMright | 9/12/2007, 1:41 pm EST

I remember reading somewhere several years ago that Zep was considering a reunion tour w/ Dave Grohl mentioned as a possible choice to fill in for drums. Jason Bonham is obviously the logical person to fill that roll, but Zepplin w/Grohl drumming would have been interesting!

SteveS | 9/12/2007, 1:43 pm EST

It’s sort of tragic to hear our rock heroes from the past sound the way they do today… Roger Daltrey, Elton John, Robert Plant, Stevie Nicks… it’s painful to hear them today, especially the way we remember them in their heyday. What a drag it is getting old…

jjj | 9/12/2007, 1:44 pm EST

I’LL SELL MY HOT DAUGTHER FOR TIX!

mikey | 9/12/2007, 1:46 pm EST

why is this not all over the internet! and sombody should tell Led Zep to do some more damn shows!

Atnon | 9/12/2007, 1:46 pm EST

Did they get MEG from The White Stripes to “drum” ?

HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!

Meg = WORST DRUMMER EVER! CVNT SHOULD JUMP OFF A CLIFF!

Becky | 9/12/2007, 1:48 pm EST

I’ll trade my virginity for tickets.NOT kidding! Hot WHITE blue eyed blonde girl THIN,smooth silky skin.

yep | 9/12/2007, 1:50 pm EST

Too bad, of course. Jason Bonham is sadly not that magic of a drummer – even if one was to try NOT to compare him to his father, he lacks that touch.

Jon | 9/12/2007, 1:51 pm EST

Pink Floyd at Live 8 was not the same as Pink Floyd 30 years ago….unless I saw/heard the wrong broadcast. Can you really say Cream’s shows at the RAH a few years back was like Cream 35 years before? No…even though Bruce, Baker, and Clapton still record and tour. If people are content to see this kind of stuff from a sort of historical and nostalgic perspective, particularly those of us who weren’t alive when Zeppelin was playing, then fine…but don’t expect it to be the 70s again.

stoned ed | 9/12/2007, 2:13 pm EST

great fuckin news it opens up alot of possibilities iWILL BE THERE

concerns | 9/12/2007, 2:30 pm EST

I am very worried that they will not live up to their earlier ability.

Plant especially has me concerned. It’s very hard to maintain ones voice at that age. It would be next to impossible for him to perform like he used to, no matter how hard he tries.

Still, I’ll hope for the best.

tickets vs virgins | 9/12/2007, 2:33 pm EST

Sorry Becky, but some things are more important than a nice lay.

If I got one of those tickets, no way would I give it up.

Kelly H | 9/12/2007, 2:34 pm EST

This isn’t Led Zeppelin. It is the remaining members of the group playing together for one concert. They’ve done it before. Even when you’re a mega rockstar, the bills still have to get paid, ya know! And as for getting tickets, good luck to you. Good luck even getting on the website. I’ll watch it on youtube for free.

Starship | 9/12/2007, 2:36 pm EST

Respect to jason Bonham, the pressure on the night for him will be immense. Sadly likely to be only a few tracks and i doubt Stairway will be one of them. I would guess at Black Dog, Communication Breakdown, Since I’ve Been Loving You and i would have guessed Kashmir as a finally but this was Swan Song not the Atlantic period.

HEY Becky ! | 9/12/2007, 2:38 pm EST

If I get TIX I’ll give U one (:

1.IF you are OVER 18

2. REALLY beautiful

Love-Al

Come on! | 9/12/2007, 2:38 pm EST

Anyone who is not thrilled to death to see 3/4 of Zeppelin and Bonham’s Baby Boy does not have an opinion worth expressing. The greatest band ever, hands down period. Led Zeppelin, even at 50%, is the concert of a lifetime. I would do ANYTHING to attend!

Gwen | 9/12/2007, 3:10 pm EST

The chance of getting tickets will be less than zero for me, I’m afraid. HELL,I WANT TO BE THERE!

Jen | 9/12/2007, 3:12 pm EST

I grew up listening to Led Zeppelin and regardless of what they will sound like, I think it is truly a once-in-a life time just to be in the same damn place as them – they are legends and have been a huge influence in rock n’ roll and the music we have today – their music will never die…I have faith in Jason – like father, like son – I think he will do his best and it will be the only who can pull it off – I’ve dreamed of this as a little girl of Led Zeppelin getting back together..hopefully they will do or at least consider touring, but given their age – its more difficult for them…but the bottom line is that this band totally rocks the music and I personally think, its impossible for them to suck! ;)

LedZepRox | 9/12/2007, 3:18 pm EST

Well Robert Plant was never a very strong live performer so it could feel like the 70’s anyway.

I’d go to the show but only for the dream of it all.

beenthere | 9/12/2007, 3:29 pm EST

i don’t need to be there.
the lucky few who get tx

It easier to hear current Floyd playing atmospheric, slow tunes now, a lot easier than Zep trying to scream and thrash out the old hard classics. Listen to Nicky Horne on Planet Rock interview Nick Mason tomorrow for news of a possibility of a 4 man Floyd reunion…

Jennie Q, | 9/12/2007, 3:47 pm EST

FANTASTIC news.

Rockin' Rod | 9/12/2007, 4:06 pm EST

Hey Brien Comerford,
Beck did regroup with the Yardbirds on the Birdland album 3 years ago for a couple tracks albiet with a different singer now that Keith Relf is dead. It had Slash, Joe Satriani, Skunk Baxter, Brian May(Queen), Steve Vai, Johnny Reznick(Goo Goo Dolls) so the guitars were awesome. What we need is a full blown Yardbirds show with Clapton, Beck and Page all just jammin’ away. The Zep reunion will be good, but the 3 main Yardbirds together would seriously rule!
I still want to know what the feud between Page and John Paul Jones was about. Jones was sure kept at bay for a long time.

SteveS | 9/12/2007, 4:22 pm EST

What I said earlier about Plant, Elton John, Daltrey and Nicks was not a slam… What happened to their voices, for the most part, was of no fault of their own. They gave every ounce of voice they had back in the day, and it’s finally taken its toll… it was fun while it lasted, and it’s sort of sad to see now. You want to see prime-era Zeppelin, check out the early clips on their DVD Box, prime-era Who, check out The Kids Are Alright… at least we have those…

miccc | 9/12/2007, 5:36 pm EST

I just read that demand for tickets has already far exceeded any single concert in rock history, having instantly crashed the ticket sites with tens of millions of hits. It should not be called Led Zeppelin without the incomparable John Bonham, BUT, it’s hard not to get excited when 75% of rock’s greatest band assemble.

LW | 9/12/2007, 6:19 pm EST

Being an optimist, I applied for a passport before the announcement, just in case Zeppelin was going to do anything. I’ve been surprised to see a number of comments about them being older and questions on quality. They are older. But they are craftsmen – some of the greatest of our time. I don’t expect them to be as they were at 19, but I have faith in their talent, and there is no way I will be disappointed should I be lucky enough to get a ticket.

A mate of mine told me a few months ago that n-sync were probably more successful than Led Zep were in America. Since hearing of the demand he has not been seen since.

miccc | 9/14/2007, 11:25 am EST

With the lone exception of the Beatles, Led Zeppelin are the most successful rock band in history. Your friends favorite band n-sync have sold alot of records in the U.S. (28-million), but they’re not remotely in Zep’s league, (109.5-million).

120 million hits and 25 million registered the first day, with 80,000 hits a minute still coming in to the ticket site! By any standard, that is staggering. No entertainment act in the world could create even close to that kind of demand, it’s safe to say that the greatest rock band of all time is still the most popular band in the world.

mystic | 9/14/2007, 11:05 pm EST

Dooner | 9/15/2007, 12:52 pm EST

This is the best band of all time period. I have seen Robert play probably ten times in the last 20 years, with the most recent opening for The Who a few years ago and it was incredible. He still had it. His voice will rock the fuckin house down at O2 Arena. I will win a seat and I hope they tour the US. Rock on fellas.

led zeppelin | 9/17/2007, 7:11 am EST

Will they use real instruments like the rhodes piano or will they just play tapes and lip sync? How can Jimmy Page play after all these years? Robert plant looks like he is 100 years old! 20 years to late! I bet they suck and sound think and lame. You know they will!

STEVE HARWOOD | 9/17/2007, 12:39 pm EST

led zeppelin are possibly the best rock and roll band ever togeather.

rock and roll forever led zeppelin, you guys are bloody awsome.

Maria Wilmington NC USA | 9/18/2007, 4:23 pm EST

The first rock band album (yes album) I ever bought was by Led Zeppelin. One of my favorite bands of all time. I never got to see them in concert but I’ll fly to London if I win. No rock bands playing now even come close to Led Zeppelin. They are rock and roll!

Irene Hill | 9/18/2007, 11:47 pm EST

Is there any point in trying to register on the official site. I have been trying for days and got nowhere. They say it is the fairest way to get a ticket, by ballot, but is it? At least if you tried to buy a ticket in the normal way, I think you would stand a better chance.

It’s Sept 2007 & we are talking about a full scale Led Zeppelin reunion concert…Am I dreaming? Once again this amzing group of musicians has surprised us all with their impecable class & sense of timing. You can bet that this will be the most memorable concert in the history of music. Fly Zeppelin Fly, one last time.

zoso | 9/19/2007, 9:20 am EST

do you think they will tour after the concert?

ExSense | 9/19/2007, 12:38 pm EST

Even if there were 25 million comments from Zeppelin fans, I bet they wouldn’t express how deep everyone is really into their thing, how their music has gone down the veins for all this years into the soul and how historical this concert will be.

For those of you who are having so much trouble getting on the ticket lottery site, I’ll share my experience. I logged onto it in the middle of the night on Monday without any trouble. I got a confirmation email yesterday that my ballot had been received. Find the hours when most of the US and UK are sleeping…

Jeremy | 9/22/2007, 2:54 am EST

I would do anything for tickets to this

Jeremy | 9/22/2007, 3:06 am EST

ok now i just tried to post this but somehow it deleted it which is why i posted just a small comment but heres what i was trying to say…

I have already applied for my passport and hotel and flight bought and im going to this thing if I only get to sit outside and just stare knowing that the most amazing band ever is in there singing the songs that send the most euphoric sensation throuh my body no matter what song and no matter how many times I listen to them…they amaze me in every way…i got the Zep symbols tattooed on my right lower leg 2 days after I turned 18 which happened to be the 1 year anniversay of when I had the Privelage of seeing Robert Plant at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN and shook his hand as he was going into a bar on the other side of the alley from the Ryman…it was awesome and if anyone on this site get the chance to go I will be there too my friend and we will be mesmerized…it will be Spectacular and I can not wait! Peace

victor malta | 9/23/2007, 4:36 am EST

robert plant gave a magical show in malta last july with the strange sensation.so this can only be the greatest rockband reunion of the century, rock on zep!

JSW | 9/25/2007, 2:51 pm EST

Don’t get crazy trying to get the UK tickets.

While Robert says it is only a one time thing, it is not. His confidence will make him do a US tour, it if nothing else.

The US Tour plans r pretty much a done deal from what I hear. If this is so, getting a ticket
to say MSG in NYC (where I am at) will not be an easy thing whatsoever !

losangelesjune261977 | 9/25/2007, 8:23 pm EST

Did you know that you can line up at the “will call” station at any box office right before show time and usually get tickets? This system has never failed me. It has sometimes produced spectacular results: 8th row center. If there is a US tour, and you don’t end up with a ticket, try it.

Saw First Concert in US | 10/3/2007, 3:50 pm EST

As an “oldie” here, I went to the first Led Zepplin concert in the US, when they toured with Vanilla Fudge, in Denver, Colorado. Remember it was a cold, winter night, but, my, how they warmed up the arena. I was 15 or so, and talked my sister and her boyfriend into taking me. I’ve seen them three times total. Wish I could have won the lottery to buy two tickets this time. Would have been a gas.

Ryan | 10/4/2007, 11:22 pm EST

They were beofore my time, never had a chance to see them, i used to bug my mom to buy me tickets if they ever did this. I have heard nothing from the lottery. No luck i guess.

John | 10/9/2007, 10:30 pm EST

Wow! Led Zeppelin! Pete Townshend!
Mick Jagger! This will be the concert of the century! All we need is Paul and Ringo even though they weren’t on Atlantic.
Obviously, Townshend doesn’t want to risk Daltrey after he embarrassed him in Tampa. Good call Pete! And who needs that crusty old pirate Keith Richards,
Mick need to think of his future after the Stones! Once again Jagger is playing it smart. And Yes and ELP certainly weren’t important to Atlantic Records: A good decision not to invite them as well!

zepluver | 10/16/2007, 4:51 pm EST

I heard Robert Plant in concert in July 2005 and he sounded just as strong as he did in 1969. He still could hit the high notes and he rocked the house down! So there.

L | 10/18/2007, 10:28 am EST

I would pay the air fare and more from Australia to see Led Zeppelin. They are giants in the rock world. Robert Plant as a rock singer is my equivalent to Pavarotti as a tenor. His voice gives me goose bumps. I don’t care if he is past his prime. His prime was so much greater and higher than most, that he would still be the best you would hear.

I wanna go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!where’s the website?

sue | 10/26/2007, 9:23 am EST

just wanna b there hoping and wishing led zep make it to newyork or any where in us i will be there

flyinghigh | 10/26/2007, 9:27 am EST

i know i’m there if led is in the usa

i saw them in 1977 | 10/31/2007, 9:57 pm EST

but it was at a huge stadium, the pontiac silverdome near detroit. i had just turned 16 as was there with the hottest girl in my class. but alas the sound quality was terrible and the high school hottie refused to put out. while not a total bummer the night could have been better. i hope to someday see them at a much smaller venue but the haydays are over for these gods of rock. i have recordings of a 1972 show at the l.a. forum… i cant imagine they would ever sound that good 30+ years later. maybe a tour is a bad idea… it reminds me of an old fighter coming out of retirement for one last shot. sometimes its just better to stay the retired champ.

Sparkle | 11/3/2007, 7:45 pm EST

Saw the magical Led Zeppelin three times, 1st time in Pittsburgh, 1972, still in love after all these years, would love to date Robert Plant if he’s available, wish I had tickets to the 02 Arena
concert, still praying they move on the the USA. Then maybe I’ll try for that date.

This is so Exciting! I’ve been listening to Zeppelin since I was 13 and I got to see Jimmy Page and Robert Plant live in 98′ which was amazing.

But will this be televised?

Conflict | 11/30/2007, 3:52 am EST

Awesome. The LZ reunion, way to go for all true rock fans from the early days in England, and only new member is Jason Bonham, the son of former hardcore rock drummer John Bonham. Gotta attend to this concert when announced in my part of the world. I went to the reunion of Genesis last year. Absolutely awesome as well. They had additional drummer Chester Thompson (former Weather Report) and Daryl Stuemer on guitars along with the remaining trio Colling, Banks and Rutherford. Awesome concert. But Led Zeppelin is and has always been the TOP OF THE CHARTS

binayak | 12/2/2007, 5:18 am EST
