The Phil Spector Trial: We Watch Court TV So You Don’t Have To

9/11/07, 9:21 am EST

WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY?
Jury deliberations finally began in the Phil Spector murder trial. After one day, the jury still had not come to a decision, but that doesn’t mean the day was without drama. This weekend, an article in the U.K.’s The Mail featured recent quotes from Spector, who was supposed to be under a gag order for the duration of the trial. In his comments, Spector said that the presiding Judge Fidler “doesn’t like me,” and likened the members of the jury to “twelve people who voted for George Bush.” Ouch. That interview, as well as a Court TV interview by Spector’s outspoken twenty-six-year-old wife Rachelle, forced Judge Fidler to implore that no one involved in this case speak to the media until the trial ends. After that announcement, Rachelle Spector jumped from her seat in the audience and yelled at the judge “But I’m not a witness.” Rachelle then had the audacity to talk over Fidler as he was explaining his stance, which caused Fidler get tomato red and threaten to kick Rachelle out of court and hold her for contempt. Spector’s lawyers quickly turned to their client’s wife and whispered, sternly, something along the lines of “Shut the eff up.”

There was some court business to attend to before the jury could deliberate. The jury instructions are a crucial part of the trial, as the judge told the jury what to focus on in terms of evidence and witnesses as well as the actual charges Spector is accused of. A mess-up in jury instructions can easily result in an appeal at trial’s end, so Fidler was exact in what he told the jury, right down to correcting the pluralization of a word. For example, during jury instructions, the prosecution and defense bickered over the words “this” and “that” for what felt like the longest two minutes ever.

IS THIS GOOD OR BAD FOR SPECTOR?
Who knows? It’s good for Spector that the jury didn’t deliberate for fifteen minutes and emerge with a guilty verdict; using the full four hours of deliberations yesterday means the jurors are really weighing all the evidence. Juror ten, who jotted down several notebooks worth of testimony during the trial, was elected the foreman of the jury, so the final verdict might have a lot to do with which way his notes lean.

MEANWHILE, OUTSIDE OF COURT:
To kill some deliberation downtime, Court TV interviewed journalist Dominick Dunne to get his take on the Spector trial. Dunne talked about the time he urinated next to Spector while visiting the L.A. courthouse where the trial is being held. It turns out that Spector and Dunne already knew each other because the late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun introduced them. Dunne filled Spector in on the Ertegun memorial that Phil missed because of his inconveniently scheduled murder trial. Since that restroom rendezvous, however, Spector no longer speaks to Dunne because of a less-than-flattering article Dunne wrote about Phil for Vanity Fair.

WHY WOULD YOU GO TO A PERFECT STRANGERS HOUSE TO KILL YOURSELF. NOT TO MENTION WHAT A COINSIDENCE THAT SHE HAPPENED ON “HIS” GUN…. BUT MOST OF ALL – WHAT WOMEN WOULD SHOT HERSELF IN THE FACE. WE’RE TO VAIN. COME ON, HE’S A SCREW BALL AND NEEDS LOCKED UP. JUST LISTEN TO THE MAN SPEAK. HE’S DUG HIS OWN GRAVE REPEATLEY AND THE WIFE. NOW THERE’S A CLASS ACT. CAN WE ALL SAY “GOLD-DIGGER”

Amazing! This idiot is as guilty as sin. What woman would go to someone elses house and kill herself just before she left to go home………..come on? If this idot gets off on this one, we need to just make O.U. Simpson president of the United States. Hopeflly the jury will have more braind than the one who set O.J. free. God, I hope they do.

Juror and Verdict Watch – 9/11/2007

The juror who took the notes throughout the five-month trial is chief juror.

The jury should commence with the physical and forensic evidence and ask whether it is possible to shoot someone inside the mouth and not get significant spray of blood, tissue and gunshot residue on your jacket or shirtsleeves just inches away? If the answer is no the jury is finished and should sign and turn in the Not Guilty verdict form.

But if the jury thinks Phil Spector figured out a way in a few minutes to make the bloody mess go away, then it’s time to ask why Spector would want to murder a total stranger and the motives for Clarkson to kill herself. In that mix there is room to examine the possibility of playacting with a gun. Did Lana who had been drinking Tequila know it was loaded?

If your still not satisfied that the government was able to prove its case it’s time to deal with Spector’s old girlfriends from decades past. The absence of injuries or police reports and their continued contact is a bit strange after their bedmate assaults them with a gun. Did the chance for fame and fortune bring these ladies – crawling out from under their rocks?

As for the Limo driver it’s really simple. Did he really understand or even hear Phil Spector’s mumbling?

Anonymous | 9/11/2007, 7:44 pm EST

I understand all the arguments in favor of the prosecution none the less in this country a man is supposed to be assumed innocent until proven guilty. This case is fraught with problems; the ‘five women’ should have never been introduced as witnesses, and just reading the comments here shows how prejudiced everyone is. Don’t get me wrong, I agree that Spector has major issues, his comments were calloused, selfish and inappropriate (when he was on TV ‘complaining’ about someone having the audacity to come into his home and kill themself) there are lots of things that point to the fact that he’s not the greatest guy, and yes I too agree it seems highly unlikely that someone that doesn’t even know him would come into his house and kill themselves. Personally I think it was an accident, and I do not think that Spector is blameless; I do however think that based on what I’ve seen so far and based on what the jury has to choose from , that is murder or nothing, I’d tend to vote in favor of innocent. Not so much because I think he didn’t do it, but because I don’t think the prosecution is able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he did it. This country is so prosecution happy it’s a wonder anyone ever gets justice.

RKB | 9/11/2007, 8:08 pm EST

She saw her Hollywood dreams fade to nothing after starring in one movie, and then got to see how much Mr. Spector had managed to acquire and hold on to, living in a castle, with a driver, enjoying the finest things, just for inventing one sound recording technique thirty years ago. That could definitely be enough to push a depressed person over the edge, seeing all the finery she would never have herself and feeling life had robbed her, that there was no real, fair, logical reason why Mr. Spector should be rich while she had to work hard at a nightclub.

Antidolt | 9/11/2007, 8:29 pm EST

Clarkson would be alive if she had not gone home with a man with a rich history of gun violence/cruelty against women when drinking. She did NOT kill herself. I believe he killed her and that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt. May justice prevail.

Antidolt | 9/11/2007, 8:31 pm EST

If the jury hangs, hopefully they will try Spector again!!!

Editor | 9/11/2007, 8:40 pm EST

Hey, RKB, don’t give up your day job to write stories. They are boring and have NO basis in reality.

Editor | 9/11/2007, 8:43 pm EST

Hey anonymous, why don’t you just
ignore all the evidence that Spector is guilty because you think he is such a great guy?

Anonymous | 9/11/2007, 8:55 pm EST

so sad its called accountabity , do not think it was murder but a accident

linda c | 9/11/2007, 8:56 pm EST

Don | 9/11/2007, 9:06 pm EST

The fact that the driver called 911 and the recording of him stating what Spector had told him is really most of the whole case.

1 The gun wiped,
2 Spector not calling 911,Spector (already in denial)
3 gets tased,
4 Phil’s bloody diaper
5 murder weapon -Phil has some of the same guns
6 doesn’t like women leaving when it’s bedie-bye time

At worst it’s a hung jury.

Mee Krob Man | 9/11/2007, 9:16 pm EST

“There for the grave of God”? Way to turn a phrase, “Joyce Danelan @ yahoo dot com, aka future wife of Phil Spector once “Chelle” demonstrates her gun-tooting abilities (”Meester Spector said: ‘Oops, I just shot another one.” PHIL SPECTOR: “No I didn’t. I said ‘My new single’s number one.’”)

YAKITYYAK | 9/11/2007, 9:19 pm EST

DONT ANY OF YOU WORK FOR A LIVING

Mee Krob Man | 9/11/2007, 9:26 pm EST

P.S., Anonymous. No, not you, the one down at 7:44 PM. That’s why the charge is 2ND DEGREE Murder: what happens when you accidentally shoot somebody you’re menacing by sticking a gun in their face. And I don’t think trying to put someone in jail for blowing a woman’s teeth through the back of her head makes this country “prosecution-happy.” Shrugging it off as, well, these things happen, especially in the presence of a mad genius like Phil Spector, that, Anon., might just be pathological.

BJPLAYER | 9/11/2007, 9:43 pm EST

I think the whole trial, the judge, and the jury, are taking a very narrow view and are limiting their options. Things could be much more open if one think broadly and comes to a more global decisions. That decision is:
PHIL SPECTOR IS EITHER GUILTY OR HE IS NOT GUILTY

Amazed | 9/11/2007, 9:57 pm EST

It must be true, CA is the land of fruits and nuts!! If it’s not, why would it take 12 people more than 15 minutes to convict this man. People, especially beautiful women, do not commit suicide at a complete strangers home by blowing thier heads off. And people, even freaky ones do not tell thier drivers that they “think they killed someone” when that someone has supposedly killed themselves. If you read the police reports, the first hour it was just a big mistake, by hour four it was a terrible accident and by hour nine it was suicide. 12 reasonable people would tell you it was murder. It doesn’t matter if the gun went off accidentally it was still murder.

Lynn Bernay | 9/11/2007, 10:02 pm EST

Guilty. As Sin. you go to someones house ande when you want to leave the host pints a gun at you..I DON’T THINK SO.

Penny McHugh | 9/11/2007, 10:04 pm EST

Shame on our system if he’s not found guilty. Let’s hope this doesn’t end like the O.J. trial.(Shame also on some who left their comments today. Don’t schools teach grammar and punctuation?)

Woman | 9/11/2007, 10:25 pm EST

If you point a gun at someone and it discharges whether you meant it to or not, then it is murder 2. Personally, I think if someone points a gun trying to coerce sex and it discharges it should be murder 1. Convict Spector already. He has been free almost 5 years after the murder.

Valerie ~ | 9/11/2007, 11:09 pm EST

If Phil Spector is acquitted of this crime, this won’t be the last time he kills. I’m sure he’ll feel invincible, untouchable. The next murder will be an “accident” as he will have learned from this time how betterto beat the system. If I were his wife and wanted out, I’d never try to leave him when he’s been drinking.

Phil is the killer | 9/12/2007, 12:07 am EST

If this is another LA jury that acquits a famous man, then I it will be open season on bad behavior amongst famous people. Spector has to be the creepiest pervert and psychopath I’ve ever seen. He looks like a horror film murderer.

The evidence towards his guilt is very compelling. He never called 911, despite 13 or 14 phones, with 2 cell phones. He cleaned up evidence, and changed his jacket. He told his driver he thought he killed someone, holding the murder weapon in his blood soaked hands, sending the ex-military man running for his own life. He has a history of hatred for women, and pulling weapons on them. He has a history of fantasizing out loud about killing women. In his words, “All women are Effing C…s who deserve a bullet in their heads.”

He is probably the most demonic looking and acting man in California, and if he’s given a free pass for callously killing a lovely and loved woman, then, I hope California falls into the ocean, once and for all.

Jay | 9/12/2007, 1:18 am EST

Its too coincidental that she got shot in Spector’s house, seeing as how others before had a gun pointed at their faces in Spector’s house. Also how many times does someone shoot herself on a first date in her date’s house????

Tereseke | 9/12/2007, 2:39 am EST

I don’t live in the US and I try to be as objective as possible; I’m not convinced Phil Spector is guilty so I consider he is innocent. Judge only the facts of February 2003 not his whole life or his look.

Look, guys at Rolling Stone, judges don’t “implore.” They order. Judges don’t take a “stance.” They rule. Lawyers implore, argue, take stances; judges decide. There’s a big difference, and this report is not getting that right.

The whole trial is farcical, how can you justify taking this long to lock away a man who is a danger to public. I listened to proceedings on Sirius & it just seems to be one big publicity stunt & an opportunity for others to get their little bit of fame. The whole world knows this freek is guilty so get him behind bars !

Spector is just a screwed up dickhead & the only thing going for him is wealth which he made when he still had half a brain cell. Regarding Reasonable Doubt for Phil Spector

1. The prosecution were never able to put the gun in Spector’s hand.
2. Spector’s DNA was not on the bullets.
3. Statistics say 99 per cent of in the mouth gun shots are through suicide.
4. Every single defense expert placed the gun in Lana’s hand.
5. DeSouza – is a biased witness he had reason to lie against Spector to get out of being a suspect for murder himself. If this is what really happened then it is a betrayal in order to leave a sinking ship and come out shining – and betrayal can definitely happen DeSouza had something to gain and it is definitely part of human nature and may have occured with DeSouza.
6. If the American Operator understood Adriano Desouza’s 911 call in English as Seal Inspector and not Phil Spector and if Adrian mixes up he she and it on the Witness stand – then it is perfectly reasonable to believe that Desouza did not perfectly speak or understand English or Phil Spector
7. At his worst Adriano has motivation to get his green card and not be deported – even if this was not his first concern on Feb 3 2003 – which then was to not be a murder suspect or De Souza’s motivation could have been on Feb 3 2003 to do the right thing or to intentionally implicate Spector.
8. Maybe a different scenario happened where Phil trusted Adriano and asked him to get the police after all Spector was his boss and used to ordering him around.
9. The Jacket should have blood on the sleeve.
10. Lana Clarkson was accident prone. Was this her second and final accident?
11. Lana Clarkson drank Tequila people do strange things on tequila. I put my shoes in the refrigerator when I was on Tequila and couldn’t later remember where I put the shoes.
12. Lana Clarkson before she knew Phil Spector broke both her own wrists while drinking at a Christmas eve party.
13. Phil had only known Lana a few hours and had no motive to kill her.
14. All the other ex-girlfriend witnesses that Phil allegedly threatened with a gun were his long time girlfriends not new acquantances and they are all still alive
15. The string of ex-girlfriends and their testimony is a diversion to the night of 3rd Feb 2003 and cannot prove Lana Clarkson’s murder.
16. Adriano De Souza is the State’s puppet he has no independence because he has no working papers and is on the verge of deportation or a green card.

Sarah Blessing | 9/12/2007, 9:25 pm EST

Thanks for that Phil (or Rachelle) but none of it rings true with me.

I’ll be amazed if the verdict is not a clear resounding Guilty. There is not a doubt in my mind.

and I don’t believe that Lana was drinking when she broke her wrists – wasn’t she doing the River Dance?

DeSouza was so clearly an upright hard-working man who did the right thing, even though he was working illegally and would be exposed. If Spector had asked him for help – or even wasn’t holding a gun, he would have run in to help – not run away in fear for his own life.

The defense experts came off as biased and willing to say anything for a price – they’ve lost all credibility and respect with their outrageous performances.

But, I won’t go point for point – every one of the defense arguments was full of holes. Hard to imagine anyone falling for them.

Antidolt | 9/12/2007, 9:31 pm EST

Within 3 hours of meeting Phil Spector, with a history of gun violence/cruelty against women, Lana Clarkson was dead. Despite no previous suicide threats or attempts the defense is blaming her for her own murder. Talk about scapegoating!!! The Prosecution has made its case beyond reasonable doubt. I expect the jury will return a GUILTY verdict convicting Phil Spector of murder in the 2nd. May justice be served!!!

Antidolt | 9/12/2007, 9:46 pm EST

If any of the other 14 women who could have testified that Spector pulled a gun on them were shot dead, Spector’s defense would be saying they too were suicidal…..
Spector himself would not be testifying though. He would just hire others.
What a scumbag. (Dangerous gun nut with sex pistols.)

Well what is taking so long for the jurors to come to a guilty verdict? I know, they are all in the room playing UNO.

Doug C | 9/13/2007, 7:11 pm EST

In my opinion – he shot her accidently. He tried to intimidate her into staying, pull the gun and pointed at her (like he has done 1000 times) and this time, much to Phil’s suprise the gun went off. It certainly wasn’t suicide.

CC | 9/13/2007, 7:58 pm EST

One can only hope that everyone, Phil Spector included , will be punished if they stick a loaded revolver lin another person’s body cavity and it discharges killing them whether it was an “accident’ or not.

Doug C | 9/13/2007, 9:44 pm EST

Agreed CC – Accident or not , he’s got a heavy price to pay. He Murdered her and he should be found guilty – but I do believe it was an accident. I’m just worried about “beyond a reasonable doubt”. There will always be some kind of doubt about an event that has no witnesses. In some lands people are pressumed guilty and have to prove innocence. That’s not what we have here. The defense just has to plant a meager “maybe” in someone’s mind and by definition – Not Guilty. That’s troublesome. Oh, and it was still an ccident.

I’m guessing he’ll get a guilty sentence, appeal it which will bide him some free time.It will go back to trial he’ll get a very light sentence like Robert Blake and once it’s out of the public eye he’ll be released after a very short stint. Great system huh…

Kim | 9/14/2007, 3:11 pm EST

The defense is trying to paint Clarkson as a drug addict, hooker.
K,what if she was?
Personal morals aside does that make her worse that compare in any way to many of the twisted/cruel things Spector has done to hurt OTHERS. If those things about Clarkson are true the person she hurt most was herself. She was threatening anyone @ gunpoint, attempting to hold people against their will etc.

Phil is the killer | 9/14/2007, 11:32 pm EST

If there’s a hung jury it means the corrupt defense tampered with a juror. There’s no bloody way that anyone could not convict this deranged psychopath otherwise.

booboo | 9/15/2007, 10:42 am EST

coaltrain45 reminds me of one of those oj didnt do it idiots, lol.
lets face it there will always be morons like cotrain45 that will doubt every crime because if you look at there lives i can almost guarantee that they either are criminals themselves or know criminals as family or friends.

I do believe he did it. My reason for this is no call to 911, pure and simple. If you are innocent you have no fear of calling 911, and he may have assumed ADS just left and didn’t want to get involved, little did he know.
Guilty as charged.

I think he is guilty, but I pray that he faces his future with courage and whatever dignity he can muster.

Treske | 9/17/2007, 6:35 am EST

I continue hoping Phil Spector will be innocented. The jury didn’t make a decision yet, I suppose it’s because they are not certain. When the members of a jury are not sure someone is guilty they have to innocent him; it’s not possible for them going on living after putting someone in prison without being convinced he’s guilty.

Unfortunately the Neanderthals are still among us who don’t understand that no means no. These developmental retards think it is alright to club a woman or pull a gun on her to force her to comply with their one-sided wishes. Developing some lovable qualities is not an option. Therefore, it is much better that these throwbacks to the stone age practice safe sex and make themselves at home – alone. If they don’t, they are likely to find themselves defendants in criminal trials and defendants in protracted litigation – when not serving time in prison.

“THIS IS AMERICA WE ALL HAVE EQUAL RIGHTS HERE IN THIS COUNTRY ”

Really Lizzy? You sure you want to walk among the mere mortals of the world? I mean you being among the “elite” and “exclusive” people band all…

Kim | 9/22/2007, 8:17 pm EST

“If this is another LA jury that acquits a famous man, then I it will be open season on bad behavior amongst famous people.

He is probably the most demonic looking and acting man in California, and if he’s given a free pass for callously killing a lovely and loved woman, then, I hope California falls into the ocean, once and for all.”

What he said!

Kim | 9/22/2007, 8:27 pm EST

” THIS IS AMERICA WE ALL HAVE EQUAL RIGHTS HERE IN THIS COUNTRY ”

But LIzzy you’ve been boasting here about how you are part of the “elite” ,”exclusive”.
You sure you would want to walk a mong the “mere” mortals of this world and see Phil get the sentence an “everyman” surely would?

Kim | 9/23/2007, 9:03 pm EST

“but not a sober killer”

Didn’t his lady friend of many yrs. testify under oath that while visiting with him the night before Spector murdered Lana Clarkson,oh sorry had a drink with her he was drinking heavily himself, acting rather “strange”.
The days previously he demonstrated the same type behavior.
Jeez this is his longtime friend, she picked up on it.
{Or it’s just bull so the little f@#$ can attempt to get a “temp insanity plea” if found guilty}.

How you can say “well ya know I met the guy once, nah I don’t think he could kill someone” is rather lame.Unless you around an ill person on a REGULAR basis how could you possibly know what they are talk, think, interact with others.
Next…

“If you were under such pressure, your looks would fail you too.”

And he looked good …

WHEN????
This is where much of his troubles seen to stem from.
Even though he was a respected producer {not myself all that much I often wonder how much better George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass would sound without such a muddy/cluttered production.Which it is on some of the tracks IMO}.
He suffers from an inferior complex {componded with his paranoia, violent temperment}his being a short, bald, not particularly a good looking man.
He needs to “dominate” through threatening people, intimidation with guns.Makes him feel better about himself, despite what he has achieved in life.
This is all well documented.I read about the weasel’s hangups yrs. ago in various books.
Ronnie Spector really has some stories,it’s a wonder she got out of there alive. And ya know what,if The Ronettes recorded for another label such as Motown at their prime as a new act they would of been just as big.
They were attractive young girls.
Ronnie Spector had alot of charisma,a good voice she didn’t need Phil,it just worked out that way.

Liz | 9/25/2007, 8:48 pm EST

He’s guilty – period! To think he’s innocent is just plain delusional.

Maple Jack | 10/3/2007, 9:19 pm EST

He’s SO guilty I want to throw up.
Prosecution CONVICTION next time around.

Chelle Fan | 3/14/2008, 12:04 pm EST

Chelle is not a gold digger. She fell in love with Phil Spector. And she stands by her man.I know Chelle, and she is smart enough to run away if she felt Phil was guilty.I’m a girl and I met Chelle though Howie Hubberman at a Kaya Jones show.Pre Spector.Chelle is no gold digger !

J. Ferguson | 3/18/2008, 5:21 pm EST

Chelle fan, if you’re such a fan of Chelle why don’t you have the guts to identify yourself? If you’re so proud of it…From what I read, from a very reliable source, she foot stomped her way into getting that ring, that fancy car, and she wasn’t even Spector’s first pick for a wife…If she loves him so much, she shouldn’t need notecards to read off of to express her feelings. Sorry hun I don’t buy what you’re selling.

Jenny Hernandez | 3/30/2008, 4:39 am EST

and I am sure that your real name is J. Ferguson? You certainly do not know Phil Spector nor his wife. Plus I am quite sure you have never even met them. You are just another jealous loser that believes inaccurate information that you read.

J Ferguson | 11/12/2008, 5:34 pm EST

Hey Jenny, (who knows if that is your real name?),

Damn straight that is my real name, it’s John Ferguson. And I know a lot more about the Spectors than you assume.
I am just not going to divulge that info because it implicates someone I care about and who could get very hurt by it all. Funny the things you assume about people you don’t even know…

Best,
John
