One Last VMAs Shocker: Ratings Improved Over 2006

9/11/07, 7:12 pm EST

While Rolling Stone live blogger Rob Sheffield, our commenters, and pretty much everyone who took in Britney Spears’ so-called comeback performance decried Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards as a disjointed failure, the numbers tell a different tale: More than 7 million viewers tuned in to the ceremony, 23 percent more than last year. Granted, the 2006 VMAs set a low bar in terms of ratings, falling to 5.77 million (which was down from 8 million the year prior). So what saved the day for MTV this time? Britney curiosity? The fact that the network swore they wouldn’t replay the show again and again and again like usual? The move to Vegas and suite parties? Kanye West, for one, votes Britney: On a satellite radio show today, he ranted, “Man, they were just trying to get ratings, and they knew she wasn’t ready and they exploited her.”

It’s not a shocker. Where else are you going to see white people fight, coked up whores who can’t sing, black people complain about “the man”, all done to the tone on Las Vegas.

Besides an Episode of COPS and their ratings have improved over the years.

I say next year, you put a skip in everyones backup/lipsynch tracks, lace the liquor with crack, and sit everyone at their rivals tables, lock the door and watch the fur fly. It would be a live action Celebrity Deathmatch.

Make these fools earn their careers for once.

I really wish Jeff Rudolph would have danced with Britany.

They are hot!

The VMAs were cool man. It’s really kinda ridiculous. People hate MTV for not enough music, well, aside from commercials, EVERYTHING in that show, including the awards were second to musical performance after musical performance. Some of which, alot of which were pretty damn entertaining. Save some poor editing choices it’s got 2 thumbs up from me.

1 song #1 rock radio-stairway to heaven —the lady who bought the stairway showed up in the fall nyc–buzz got around foo-fighters-new song opening like stairway-some people got a glimpse of set photos that seem to have matched a visual concept of stairway to heaven–vma`s kept advertizing “you never know who might show up”===people got an impression–the LADY MIGHT SHOW UP—

Don’t you have to actually show music videos to have a music video award show??? MTV sucks. End of story.

Alicia Keys’ irresistable frame is realistically why the VMA’s got great ratings.

boring | 9/12/2007, 11:38 pm EST

except for brittany sad and pathetic performance and then sarah silverman calling her childern the “cutest mistakes ever” and make a vaginia out of her mouth, i thought it was all boreing…boo you mtv remember when you had cool award shows with chris rock hosting.

I was in total support of the big “comback” but was also disappointed in what seemed to be a lack of caring about her performance, on Britney’s part. Maybe she wasn’t ready, who knows, then someone should’ve told her that.

Most people turned in to see B-R-I-T-N-E-Y (note spelling). Having it in Vegas was a big mistake. It looked like the Billboard Awards. TACKY ! Also, did they actually pay Sarah Silverman for her amateur performance ?
