VMAs Wrap-Up: Kanye’s Tantrum, Kid Rock’s Punch, Timberlake’s Pleas

9/10/07, 10:05 am EST

This year’s official MTV VMAs broadcast may have been baffling and disorganized (check out Rob Sheffield’s live blog for a moment-by-moment analysis of the suck and click here for the night in photos) but it turns out that’s just because all the crazy shit was happening backstage and/or elsewhere. Here’s a brief run-down of the best post-VMA gossip and news:

  • According to a post on Britney fansite BreatheHeavy.com, the pop princess almost refused to go onstage after she heard Sarah Silverman rehearsing her monologue in which, among other things, the comic called Spears’ kids the “most adorable mistakes” ever. According to the site, MTV asked Silverman to skip this joke, but once she was out there she went for it anyway.
  • Pamela Anderson wasn’t just surprisingly appealing as a presenter, she was also the likely cause of the night’s big brawl. According to TMZ, Las Vegas police were searching for Kid Rock after he supposedly “clocked” Tommy Lee, who was apparently provoking him. Both men were escorted out of the Palm’s Hotel and Casino by security, leading to about a hundred VMA jokes about how rock stars are just as violent as hip-hop artists. Kid Rock was eventually located by police, questioned and released.
  • Last night Kanye West lost in all five of the categories in which he was nominated. This did not please him. “That’s two years in a row, man … give a black man a chance,” West said during a mini post-show meltdown. “I’m trying hard man, I have the … number-one record, man.” Last year, in a more impressive display of disappointment, West rushed the stage at the MTV Europe awards after Justice vs Simian beat him in the best video category.
  • West was also pissed he didn’t get to perform on the main stage, a source tells MTV News. While watching the (snore of a) closing performance featuring Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, and Nelly Furtado, West reportedly started feeling miffed. “He started asking anyone who’d listen why he wasn’t allowed to perform on the main stage,” a backstage source said. “‘Why did I perform in just a suite?’ he was saying. ‘Justin’s my boy, but even he gets to perform in both a suite and on the main stage? Something’s wrong here.’ ” West’s final outrage-fueled promise: Never to return to MTV.
  • As those of you who subjected yourself to the live broadcast know, Timberlake acted like the elder statesman of pop last night, discussing how old he feels, praising young up-and-comers (JT is twenty-six) and begging MTV to play more videos. “Play more damn videos. We don’t want to see the Simpsons on reality television,” the former boy bander said. “Play more videos.”
  • 50 Cent fans can’t follow directions. During a performance by the rapper held Saturday night at the Hard Rock, Fifty repeatedly warned fans to back away from his set after a mad rush to collect the cash he was throwing around resulted in stage lights dangling dangerously close to the pool, AP reports.”Back up,” the rapper yelled. “You’re going to get electrocuted.” When the crowd refused, Fifty ended the show early in an attempt to avoid a massive lawsuit.

HA… thats all i can say …. HA

realmusicislost.. | 9/16/2007, 7:21 pm EST

just wana say that i agree with dennis about bringing MTV back to what is was meant to be..unplugged, videos, Yo! MTV Raps, etc..all that good stuff that brought REAL talent to the stage. i say we all just boycott MTV until the do so!!

P.S. I feel really bad for Brit’s dancers…she f***in sucked, but they were trying to dance their hardest and pulled it off as best as they could..I’m a dancer myself, so I have to give them sum kinda props =)

Jackson Sykes | 9/14/2007, 5:17 pm EST

well there, mr. anglophile…mind the typos that might incur, you’ve done pissed me off…I did not realize we all voted for bush…othat our entire population is sharing one single brain. don’t make broad generalizations, you’re making your own country and culture look small and petty…anglophile? Are you English? I lived in London for a spell, great city, not as nice as the countryside, but even over there I heard about nothing but the beckhams and the little princes, and ms. moss and her heroin boy, etc etc etc…it’s not our country, it’s what the media chooses to show here, there and everywhere…they always shoot for the lowest common denominator, my friend (and I use that term very loosely)…every country has a lowest common denominator…you might be yours, I mean, you are afterall leaving comments on an mtc article you no doubt at least skimmed….so, take your pompous attitude, your generalizations about a people you haven’t earned the right to judge, and shove it really, really far up yer arse.

Nathan | 9/14/2007, 2:29 pm EST

2 words: Phuk MTV!

Anglophile | 9/14/2007, 12:16 am EST

I’m puzzled. The majority of comments here concur that the show reeked. Yet you all watched it and quite a few made it all the way through.

Were you all waiting for it to improve ? Hoping to see one good sequence amongst ten shitty ones ? Too lazy to change the channel ? Nothing else on the tube that night ? You like beating your heads against the wall because it feels good when you stop ?

Typical Americans: you’d watch drying paint if it were being televised. You’re all apathetic masochistic lemmings and (shudder) products of an MTV generation. You voted a moron with the IQ of soap into the presidency not once, but twice ?!!

I rest my case.

RIP MTV | 9/13/2007, 11:56 pm EST

MTV Awards = utter shite from start to finish. Only the Brit Awards come a close second.

Why does America have to self-destruct every award show into a self-indulgent, circle-jerking, Vegas-styled kitschfest ?

And here’s a newsflash for Kan-yay: you don’t win awards, ‘cos you’re a big-mouthed, talentless dickhead.

Lola223 | 9/13/2007, 11:22 am EST

I totally loved the VMA’s.but britney has REALLY gotta stop showing off that ugly body! it really tramatysis kids! >:-0

Never before seen footage of Kanye’s meltdown.

Matthew | 9/12/2007, 10:48 am EST

I like how a lot of people blammed Sarah Silverman. If Britney was so hurt by Sarah’s comments, she would have
A) deffended her kids, it’s been 3 days already and no comment from Brit.
B) Not shown her puss around the world after she went to after partys.
If she put as much energy into that performance as she does partying, she would have been flawless.

I WANT MY

I WANT MY

I WANT MY MTV, NOT!

Video killed the radio star and MTV killed itself Sunday night.

Hang Loose Y’all

Anonymous | 9/11/2007, 10:57 pm EST

I’m totally in agreeance with Rockstar70 & 70sRocker. We need a program that we can tune in ANYTIME and see rock vids (old & new) like a radio format backed by video. Though I enjoy all types

STRAIGHTFORWARD | 9/11/2007, 3:59 pm EST

BRITNEY’S GOT PROBLEMS! NEED A FIXIN BABE
I GOT A PROBLEM WITH THIS NO TALENT KANYE WEST. GIVE ME A BREAK MOST PEOPLE IN GENERAL DON’T MAKE WHAT U DO AND U COMPLAIN. U BETTER BE THANKFUL UR NON TALENTSD ASS HAS STILL GOT A JOB OH YEAH HIRE A LYRICIST. I NTHINK VANILLA ICE IS LOOKING FOR WORK!

Keepin' It Real | 9/11/2007, 12:11 pm EST

Why does MTV continue to promote and back a loser such as Brit??? She is the perfect example that being “Trailer Park Trash” isn’t due to not having any money, but it’s in her DNA. Did she really think she could pull it off? She should focus on being a mother first of all, then work on maturing as a woman and bettering herself as a person. Her poor kids have to be subjected to watching their mom dress like an out-of-shape hooker, not being able to keep up with her dancers, and not even able to lip-sync the words to her own song! Why didn’t Chris Brown open the show???

And Kanye….. Must the public be subjected to more of your crying about not getting a fair shake because you’re black???? Maybe if you spoke with a little more intelligence, people would demand to see more of you, but as far as I’m concerned, I get more entertainment out of seeing Britney fall on her face, than I do seeing you perform in your typical boring Kanye fashion. Your lines are weak!

Jackson Sykes | 9/11/2007, 11:14 am EST

maybe, if we’re lucky, that failed attempt at lip-synching and dancing will be the final nail in ole Brit’s coffin…

MTV really has diminished since their inception…they’re so tunnel-visioned about their music…

I’m so tired of hearing about the same crappy pop and/or emo artists out there putting out the same congealed crap, song after song…

there are so many great genres of music out there getting nothing from folks like MTV and to a degree RS…

We never get to see, hear or read about great artists on the fringe like William Elliott Whitmore, Flogging Molly, Strawfoot, Slim Cessna or Gogol Bordello or the like to any great length, if at all…

polym | 9/11/2007, 8:17 am EST

That was unwatchable. And a disservice to music. I can’t believe I’m with Kanye, but I so am. If he actually sticks to this I’ll buy his back catalog just ’cause. Incred-a-bad.

i hate to tell you this | 9/11/2007, 3:19 am EST

Pink Taco, but you fucked up the spelling too. It’s “children.” Hopefully, you don’t have any.

Pink Taco. | 9/11/2007, 2:34 am EST

Jessica..Why dont you Spell ” Chilidren ” right..

then you can bash britney k?

the emporer's clothes | 9/11/2007, 2:23 am EST

why did it take so many so long to figure that it was all smoke and mirrors. they only realized it was smoke and mirrors when all the smoke and mirrors were gone. This to me, was the truest performance she has ever done.

Jessica | 9/11/2007, 2:05 am EST

I think that MTV really had a great idea for this year’s awards…but it just didn’t go too smooth. All of the people you wanted to see MORE of…were in the suites practically the wholw night! I really think that in some ways that the musicians had less to work with. There were SO many talented musicians there…and you barely got to see them! Great idea to show the live parties…but just not for the audience at home…it really did make you want to be there! To the whole Britney situation..I am a fan of hers, and to see her back on stage again was great, I think the public forgetting that this young woamn has had two kids, been in rehab, just finalized a divorces and is verbally abused by paparazzi everyday! And for her to still get out there and perform took GUTS, so for all the haters out there…F*** you! Brit is back and I give her props just for getting up there! Sarah Silverman was WAY out of line. The jokes about her CHILIDREN??…I just could not believe it…why would anybody think that is funny?? I thought is was disrespectful and hurtful…all in all….the show was very VMA. I enjoyed it. By the way I’m glad Justin won he for sure deserves it!

amalia | 9/10/2007, 11:56 pm EST

Kanye has a point… Britney was asked to open the VMAs as a “novelty” not because she desearved the honor. Kanye is talented; although maybe he is not the most media-trained, articulate critic. I don’t always agree with his tyrades, but I almost always find myself on his side. Not to mention he is ridiculously talented.

Scott | 9/10/2007, 11:39 pm EST

What the F*CK is wrong with Sarah Silverman. What a freaking bitch. Have some professionalism to follow what you say you wont say, stupid moron. People pay you to perform and not act like the loser you are. Man, she pisses me off so much. I hope she gets 100% of what she gives out. She’s probably got a loser life.

AnnieA | 9/10/2007, 11:22 pm EST

Britney’s situation is soo sad, even if she was thrown off because of what she heard Sarah Silverman saying..or a change in her performance she’s still a “professional” and shouldn’t have messed up lip-synching or even the simplest dance moves…she looks like an average girl in her shape which is awesome to go against the hollywood stereotype but she still needs to dress the part…and i honestly think she should organize her personal life before she even considers doing any sort of comeback..shouldn’t battle soo many demons at once.

Also..Sarah Silverman…being a mean b**ch is her thing…it’s what her stand-up always is and it is a very select few who honestly enjoy her styling but you have to lay off her too..MTV knew exactly what to expect from her and so should the audience. She shouldn’t change what she finds funny and what her fans find funny because it’ll offend a few people who still no matter what pull a couple million in a year…they should be able to handle it, atleast afford the therapy to handle it. Or those starlets with issues should step out of the starlight and there will be no negetive attention except the neighborhood gossip.

the show itself was a sad scene for MTV, in an attempt to get more viewers they distanced themselves even farther from their demographic. I give props to their reality shows, they pull in viewers and target a large age demographic from tweens to young thirties even older. But their collaborations with VH1 and constant streams of reruns and marathons of other networks shows really are leaving a huge portion of us loyalists in the dark…when the largest block of actual music being played happens at the wee hours of the morning. Poor MTV it’s not too late for you guys…but you have to go back to your roots…anti-established media, and the desire to bring the latest in great music to the populous not just the same stuff you can get when you put on the radio.

Dennis | 9/10/2007, 9:37 pm EST

MTV, stunk up the place. Britney?????who?????. Terrible show. How many Real Worlds do you need. K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupids). More videos, Unpluged, Spring break, Headbangers Ball, Yo MTV. Ah, the good old days.

Gene Simmons | 9/10/2007, 8:56 pm EST

who is she praying to?

Fuck Sarah Silverman | 9/10/2007, 7:50 pm EST

shouldn’t she be drawing dicks on the walls of a catholic church? she can protest and disagree (her recent stand up show), but why be so shameless and disresprectful?

Face Value | 9/10/2007, 7:22 pm EST

This show was a terrible representation of “good music”, by clipping any real music performances to 10 seconds on camera and showing Chris Brown and Britney Spears Lip Sync. Britney Spears needs a miracle and I hope she gets it, for the children’s sake. I didnt watch it straight through though i tried…painful.

Nicole | 9/10/2007, 6:04 pm EST

I was actually in vegas this past weekend for the VMA’s. The parties were more fun than the awards show itself. The show this year SO boring…but MTV had a great set-up for the red carpet though. They should keep the show in Vegas but they need to rethink the set up next year.

Aurora_island | 9/10/2007, 5:03 pm EST

I truly believe that Britney’s show openning was perfec t and in sync with the rest of the show. It was a sorry attempt of a performance and MTV’s VMA’s of 2007 was a sorry attempt of a representation of what is best out there in music and video.

jungleland | 9/10/2007, 5:03 pm EST

I watched the 1st 15 minutes and then turned the TV off. After reading the reviews I think I will not bother to catch the rest I tivo’d.

None of these artists seemed like A level groups.

I’ll look for the Ceelo / Foo Fighters stuff on you tube. This year there was not a single artist that I owned any of their music except for Gnarles Barkely and Pat Smear.

Brian | 9/10/2007, 2:41 pm EST

Sarah Silverman = lameness to the infinite power.

Britney = I’d feel sorry for you if you weren’t tryin’ so hard

MTV = Realizes that Reality is where it’s at (for them at least) Why not change the name to RTV?

When Justin Timberlake becomes a major star…it’s time to give pop music a much needed rest - am I the only one who thinks he has the worst falsetto EVER?

MTV AWARDS SHOW = Very few artists out there are talented enough to receive awards from ANY show.

downside up | 9/10/2007, 2:38 pm EST

so much hype for nothing. is it any surprise that corporate labels are falling by the wayside along with today’s music scene…this could actually be a good thing for “real” music artists…the wake-up call.

Josh | 9/10/2007, 2:27 pm EST

I’m getting a little bored with Kanye’s immature little tantrums. Okay, you won’t play MTV anymore…big friggin’ deal! It’s a shame because the man does have talent but he thinks that he IS the talent and it’s pathetic! I’m so tired of the concept of race being thrown up every single time a black person doesn’t win something! “Give a black man a chance,” he says! The world has, a-hole, by buying your damn albums and coming to see you live! Just because we don’t lavish every friggin’ ounce of praise on you doesn’t mean that we’re keeping you down! Also, as much as I don’t like Britney, way to squeeze in that low blow(”she hasn’t had a hit in a million years”) all for the sake of not being god’s gift to the vma’s!

Sammy | 9/10/2007, 1:59 pm EST

I’d liked to have seen Britney with her St. Judes hair cut, finger her slit whilst singing Don’t Dream it’s Over. Now that would have been exciting!

BOO | 9/10/2007, 1:53 pm EST

MTV, get it together. The show sucked, the performances sucked, the clothes sucked, the music sucked. The whole VMA show was a total bomb. Bring back the real music, the real funny people and Britney, get it together girl.

elSCORCHO | 9/10/2007, 1:50 pm EST

Britney sucked balls. she was terrible, I can still remember when she used to cause a stir with her sexy ways, now she looks like a cheap ass stripper on crack.

Kanye was Ok, so was Justin. I hope we could have seen more of Josh Homme and Mastodon, mmmm.

At least Paris showed. hahah. The funniest skit was the Kid Rock/Tommy Lee Fight, Oh wait….

Fall out and Foo digger! | 9/10/2007, 1:43 pm EST

People seem to only focus on the horrible things that happened last evening..Which was about 95% of the show…What kind of format was that?

But on a lighter note the Foo fighters and all of there guests were great …cool to see Pat Smear back on the stage with them!! THe little Fall Out Boy w/rhianna diddy was pretty cool as well!

Other than that … it was a fucking clown shoe of an award show!

Kali | 9/10/2007, 1:29 pm EST

Having never been a Britney fan I was watching expressly for the train wreck and was not disappointed. I totally expected her to rush out and deck Sarah S for raggin’ on her kids though. The sound was terrible and the whole thing came across like a Cable access production. I had my faith renewed in JT when he finally stated something all us little people have been saying for years and I hope but doubt that someone at the network listens. It is difficult to remember the last time I actually saw a music video on MTV or VH1.

70'srocker | 9/10/2007, 1:23 pm EST

MTV is dead….let us all bow our heads in happiness. The award show, the acts, even the visuals completely sucked. All you have to do is check out the older ones and the truth is painfully obvious.

Funny Boy | 9/10/2007, 1:07 pm EST

Sarah Silvermansteinburg the angry, talentless, jew got some shots in on a few wasted souls who are totally down on their luck. Like the talentless, angry jews on the Howard Stern show… and you all watched it. You complain about MTV yet you still waste your pathetic lives watching it… Loser fans watching loser TV. What a perfect marriage…

Jeff | 9/10/2007, 12:52 pm EST

Not a huge fan of Justin Timberlake, but he’s right — MTV needs to show some videos. All they are now is a TV channel that sucks — music is what they’re about — isn’t it?

MzzzMelissa | 9/10/2007, 12:47 pm EST

I gotta agree, the awards were pretty lame. However, I’m rooting for Britney to get back into the swing of things and really make this comeback successful for herself. As for Kanye, oh god someone shut him up already. The guy has amazing music…he just needs to have some duct tape over his mouth when he’s out in public. It’s one thing to say ‘hey, i lost and that’s lame” but to throw the kind of tantrums he does is just a joke. And on a last note, Justin Timberlake…who usually looks so sexy but was lookin a little tore up last night…way to go for telling MTV how so many of us feel. More videos! That was the first time I’ve watched MTV in forever because I’m tired of watching shows with whiny little snobby rich high school kids. VIDEOS.

Rockstar70 | 9/10/2007, 12:47 pm EST

Remember when we could grab a case of beer and a pizza and watch HEADBANGERS BALL on a Saturday night. Now if I stay in on a Saturday night I get to watch Bret Michaels find true love. WHY GOD WHY??

The whole thing was a train wreck. Miss Silverman was ballsy but it went down from there. This “music” is so bad. Bring on the good old days. Its to bad Kanye can’t take it like a man and not like a racsist cry baby. Too bad “MILLIONS” heard him say he would never do anything with MTV again. Hope he keeps his word. Too many witnesses! I may be almost 50 but I love good music and down to earth people that make it. NOT these poseur money hungry bling buying anti-talented people that can ryhme a few words with a computer as a band, laughing all the way yo the baank. Glad to say NONE of their $ came from me!

Okay, I didn’t even watch the whole darn thing, but the 45 minutes that I saw just like a jumbled mess of nothing. I could barely understand what song the artists were trying to sing, I thought Alicia Keys sounds terrible (and I’m an AK fan). I thought Kayne looked dumb as hell, I’m trying to figure out where the hell Nelly’s been, and as much as I love Chris Brown and think he’s a great dancer/singer, you should only steal something from the King of Pop if you are doing a tribute to him!!! The whole thing was stupid.

Aries73 | 9/10/2007, 12:38 pm EST

Wow, Nathan. You really have some low standards when it comes to other people’s children. Maybe I should look at yours and think of some crass, snide jokes to tell others.

Rockstar70 | 9/10/2007, 12:36 pm EST

It’s hard to get behind the VMAs when MTV doesn’t play videos anymore. Make a separate Channel for all thr reality Sh*t. Vh1 needs to listen up to….
Bret Michaels
Flavor Flave
New York
Scott Baio
Mystery
Hulk Hogan

How many more washed up has beens or Never was Musicians and actors are you guys going to push on us. at least bring BEHIND THE MUSIC back if we have to watch people make complete fools out of themselves. MORE MUSIC!!!

Nathan | 9/10/2007, 12:04 pm EST

There’s nothing wrong with heckling children. At least we’re not putting them in a pit, making them fight each other and then electrocuting the ones who don’t perform. Now that would be on the side of bad taste.

Stacy E | 9/10/2007, 11:58 am EST

I’m shocked that everyone thinks it’s okay to crack jokes about other peoples’ kids. Come on! Really there is so much better content out there to joke about then to start heckling toddlers. Sarah Silverman took a cheap shot and if anyone was watching you’ll see that NO ONE laughed. I guess it was easier for her to rip on toddlers than to actually try and tell some funny jokes.

GFah | 9/10/2007, 11:41 am EST

Britney’s “performance” is symbolic of MTV. They are both losing it. They both don’t “get it”. They both crave attention and rather than come up with actual content, they both wear no panties for attention.

Figuratively speaking of course.

Chuck | 9/10/2007, 11:32 am EST

Sarah Silverman is ten times hotter, funnier and smarter then Paris, Britney and Pam Anderson combined.

MTVSUX | 9/10/2007, 11:26 am EST

Kayne West is always whining about something. I can’t believe I wasted the time to watch this show. Personally I thought the Foo Fighters suite was the best part of the show. Unfortunately their crowd sucked. Who let those people in the room anyway? I praise Britney for standing up for her kids. If I were her I’d be throwing the punches, not Kid Rock.

Jamez Deen | 9/10/2007, 11:25 am EST

I agree with everyone else here. MTV SUCKS, They need to get back to why they were successful to begin with…MUSIC and MUSIC VIDEOS!!! Stop with the reality shows!!! Justin, you are the man and thanks for being man enough to tell everyone on Live TV!

Can some-one please tell me when it became ok to lip-sync? C’mon gimme a break already!!

britneysucks | 9/10/2007, 11:06 am EST

The best part of the night was Sarah Silverman’s opening monologue. It was great to watch all of the posers in the audience squirm as she ripped Britney and Paris.

MTV is horrible. The awards show was a disgrace. How can they judge music on their channel when there is no music played on their channel.

The only thing they should judge are the losers who are on their reality shows. Someone please pull the plug on this horrible network.

BanBritney | 9/10/2007, 10:49 am EST

natalie- agree! I hate MTV since they never play music or videos anymore- and we are ALL sick of reality tv already! Justin was right on for saying that- way to go! And Kanye was right on in bashing britney and complaining this time. Iknow he is arrogant, etc- but he IS way more talented then skanky spears- and he earned the right to open the show. She embarrassed herself-so kanye was proven right again.

BanBritney | 9/10/2007, 10:41 am EST

Please people- who else is Britney going to blame for her horrid performance- her nannies and assistants again? First excuse- her heel broke. Bs-she ran off stage just fine after she knew she sucked by the dead silent and shocked crowd (not in a good way). Then she blames sara silverman- who, while crude- tells it like it is. Bs. Then she blames MTV who supposedly wouldn’t let the magician dude do the performance at the last minute. BS! MTV and the hotel knows WELL in advance exactly what will be in the show and would have nixed it long ago if it was not appropriate. Britney’s outfit looked like a desperate attempt to pretend she is like she was at age 17…but she looked out of shape and like an over the hill prostitute. The worst part of the night- was her pathetic attempt to lip sync! She forgot the words and actually stopped bothering to lip sync at one point. classic! Britney- it is all over…go away!

Natalie Z | 9/10/2007, 10:38 am EST

The best part of JT’s reality TV-rant is that he was on-stage with the girls of The Hills.
