The Twenty-Five Most Outrageous Music Videos

9/10/07, 6:04 pm EST

Had enough VMAs yet today? Here’s a post that won’t even mention that pop star who opened the ceremony: our rock list of the twenty-five most outrageous music videos. Rock Daily figured this list, which spans rock-video history, would cleanse our collective palate after last night’s show, but we had no idea how badly we’d need it. So get ready for some actual, full-length videos — twenty-five of the most outlandish, sexually provocative, violent, eye-popping, wacky and just plain out there clips ever made. Madonna, the Prodigy, Aphex Twin, Jay-Z and many more made the cut — go here to watch all twenty-five possibly not-safe-for-work videos.

great list | 9/10/2007, 6:17 pm EST

Props on the variety. Tool, hasselhof, bjork all in one list. Well done.

maynard and Christopher Walken | 9/10/2007, 6:19 pm EST

prison sex and weapon of choice top my favorites. Both great in different ways.

leo3375 | 9/10/2007, 7:14 pm EST

Good list. I wasn’t sure what was meant by “outrageous,” which is why my picks were in the controversial category.

DK | 9/10/2007, 7:27 pm EST

I’m amazed at the lack of every chapter from R. Kelly’s “Trapped in the Closet.”

decisions... | 9/10/2007, 7:52 pm EST

That hoff video is comic gold. I am torn between his disastrous version of ‘Hooked on a feeling’ and ‘Prison Sex’. I think I’ll go with Tools video since it is intentionally a master peice. The hoff is just ludicrous.

Paris or Perez | 9/10/2007, 8:23 pm EST

i love prison sex!

Joe | 9/10/2007, 9:08 pm EST

It still begins and ends with Thriller.

Lumpy | 9/10/2007, 9:16 pm EST

Wow, that Replacements song at the end kicks major ass! As for the videos, if the NIN “Happiness In Slavery” video wouldn’t have been a sucky low-budget vid, it’d actually be kind of scary…. MJ’s shot in Rio video is cool, beautiful place, beautiful people… the Aphex Twin video is creepy, but y’all should check out the “Windowlicker” video too, it’s hella funny and less disturbing, but disturbing enough that T. Reznor would approve of it.

And of course Björk’s video is amazing… all of her video’s from Vespertine are.

I thought Peter Gabriel’s “Big Time” would make the list… after all, it’s super tasteless and features mass lumps of astroturds… yum!

That reminds me: the Alice In Chains video for “I Stay Away” was kinda cool too, with all the little clay people……

Peter | 9/10/2007, 11:24 pm EST

I would prefer “The Way I Am” by Eminem. But some pretty great videos – actually a great list!

Randy Underwood | 9/10/2007, 11:39 pm EST

Queen “Bohemian Rhapsody” :P

LADYLIBERTY TO TIM&TIM CO. | 9/11/2007, 1:48 am EST

max_webber | 9/11/2007, 3:24 am EST

RS did a nice job the past couple of rock list, this one included.
They included most of my top 10 choices and agreed at my top 2 outrageous videos (Hire Me!). This means now they really take into consideration the voter’s choice. Too bad I just recently saw one video which I didn’t include in my top 10. Muse’s “Nights of Cydonia” video. Coulda been a contender in the top 25.

barracuda | 9/11/2007, 4:22 am EST

ken vail | 9/11/2007, 4:47 am EST

‘loser’ by beck was always a wacky video to me.

cleosinsane | 9/11/2007, 9:21 am EST

define outrageous!

Larry Craig | 9/11/2007, 10:29 am EST

I also love prison sex. The Tool song is pretty good too.

charliemapleton(aka CM Funk) | 9/11/2007, 11:51 am EST

Makaveli-”Hail Mary”
Lauryn Hill-”Ex Factor”
Wu Tang Clan-”Triumph”(nine or ten ultramagnificent personalities and super powers of those nine or ten members…just a genius video)
Alanis Morissette-”You Learn”
311-”Come Original”
Oasis-”Don’t Look Back At Anger”(it was just a dazzling reflection of the ’60’s:music, women, and excess)

Jacob | 9/11/2007, 11:58 am EST

Good list RS, very sweet

charliemapleton(aka CM Funk) | 9/11/2007, 12:13 pm EST

By the way, good jampacked selection except from Mr. Hasselhoff(sighs). The electronica movement was giving me more appeal- especially when MTV exposed it- and Daft Punk strictly epitomized it(alongside The Chemical Brothers,Fatboy Slim, etc.). Apparently, I guess DJ’s DO make the world go ’round.

Rockstar70 | 9/11/2007, 3:52 pm EST

You’re All I Need-Motley Crue
It was banned from MTV.

frantic | 9/11/2007, 4:03 pm EST

I think Kate Bush’s Babooshka drowns almost every other video in its outrageousness.

…except MAYBE for November Spawned a Monster by Morrissey.

Bobby | 9/11/2007, 6:18 pm EST

All around the world-oasis completely outrageous

Charlie Miller | 9/11/2007, 7:36 pm EST

The happiness in slavery video sure is MESSED UP.

Wonder what inspired Trent to make that hahaha.

Off-Topic | 9/11/2007, 10:18 pm EST

Jeremy, Pearl Jam

MAVERICK | 9/11/2007, 10:59 pm EST

Why is Can’t tell me nothin on here? that video is pretty standard looking to me

Mili | 9/12/2007, 5:03 am EST

Yeah,I think you’re right about Madonna. But I’ll also say – this one > GN’R’s unoffcial fan video of the song ROCKET QUEEN > http://vbox7.com/play:984056e1

Jeremy | 9/12/2007, 7:27 am EST

What was the Porno For Pyros video about the drag king turning tricks all day then, after the day’s work is finished, he goes to a female prostitute? I didn’t find it all that outrageous but I know a lot of people who were.

Digging in the Dirt – Peter Gabriel

sadchild | 9/12/2007, 8:34 am EST

the nin broken video is the most disgusting music video ever made. game set match. there’s no way they could put it on here. it’s a 20 minute movie about someone getting kidnapped on the street and being forced to watch the 4 videos from broken while being tortured, killed and then violated while dying. and it’s absolutely horrifying. i’m at work so i haven’t had a chance to see what RS put on here for happiness in slavery but i doubt the put the unedited version that is in the broken video, where the guy is strapped to a chair naked and disemboweled by machinery and ground up into a fine liquid. trent = f***d in the head

What about... | 9/12/2007, 10:32 am EST

Rabbit in your headlights by UNKLE? Where is this video on the list? I remember all the controversy about the guy getting hit again and again by a car.

SoonergrlnTN | 9/12/2007, 12:33 pm EST

I think the Madonna video was outragous for its time. But, so was Garth Brooks’ “The Thunder Rolls”. That caused all kinds of controversy. Even MTV refused to play it. Its tame by today’s standards, though.

Any of Chris Cunningham’s vids are great, like Aphex Twin etc. Windowlicker is hilarious and twisted at the same time. I’m surprised his vid for Bjork’s “All Is Full of Love” isn’t on this list, or mentioned. Great vid and a lil shocking. Amazing effects too.

Debbie | 9/12/2007, 7:19 pm EST

She looks like a Transvestite in this photo!

jane | 9/12/2007, 11:55 pm EST

cursed female

John R. | 9/13/2007, 9:14 am EST

I love the 80’s, I really do, but you have to be kidding me with “I Want Your Sex.” and ‘Black and White” for Most Outrageous Video. Black and White did have some (for the time) stunning morphing technology, but was otherwise a straignt down the middle mainstream video with a creepy rapping McCaully Culkin. The end car-smashing bit was outragous in the same way Britney’s VMA performace was edgy – for the wrong reasons. It was a head scratching moment, not “wow, that was so cool.” And as for George Michael, naming that video outragous is rewarding intent, not execution.

John R. | 9/13/2007, 9:23 am EST

One more thing – I think the Wayne’s World version of “Justify My Love” should be substituted. That one was way better.

jungleland | 9/13/2007, 9:56 am EST

Thanks for the ‘Mats video!

Never head of Michael Jacksons “They Don’t Care About Us” Thought that title was a Tracey Ulman song. Don’t know the Kanye West song/video either.

Rolling Stone should start a Cable TV video channel, since there is not one anymore.

Chuck | 9/13/2007, 9:58 pm EST

Black Hole Sun!!! Where the hell was that?

16 clumsy+shy | 9/13/2007, 10:06 pm EST

Yes, the classic Jacko w/ white zombie dead eyes. Thriller!

Abbey | 9/14/2007, 7:59 pm EST

Bull fucking shit man. How did heart shaped boox not make that list but hasselhoff did?

Dracula | 9/15/2007, 4:16 am EST

Bob Dylan “Subterranean Homesick Blues”. Not only the very epitome of cool, but possibly the first ever non-performance music video (not sure when the first Beatles movie was released).

out of the box | 9/15/2007, 1:56 pm EST

It’s just as well. Some bands don’t need to be exploited more than they have already been.
