The Phil Spector Trial: We Watch Court TV So You Don’t Have To

9/10/07, 9:03 am EST

WHAT HAPPENED FRIDAY?
After three days of closing arguments from the prosecution and defense, the jury in the Phil Spector murder trial will finally begin deliberations today in Los Angeles. Friday began with the finale of the defense’s closing argument. After using the entire Thursday session, Spector lawyer Linda Kenney-Baden needed another three hours to try to convince the jurors that there’s reasonable doubt in this case. But while Kenney-Baden was stealthily effective the previous day, Friday found her lethargic and dull. She was at the point of overkill, as jurors started nodding off less than two hours into Kenney-Baden’s monologue, and the foreman cut her off mid-sentence to tell the judge they needed their mid-morning break.

To make matters worse, the defense’s PowerPoint program continued to malfunction. Kenney-Baden’s slow verbal gait hit the brakes for a good four minutes as the defense team struggled to find a list of potential female witnesses the prosecution did not call to the stand. Once the list was found and Kenney-Baden’s point was made, the prosecution leaped up to object, saying the list of potential female witnesses were all witnesses the prosecution wanted to call to the stand but weren’t allowed, and thus the defense had given the jury misinformation. Judge Fidler lambasted the defense, and we continued on our molasses pace.

The highlights of day two of the defense’s closing arguments: Baden-Kenney continued her analysis of Spector chauffeur Adriano de Souza’s butchering of the English language. As an example, while de Souza talked to police in the days following Lana Clarkson’s death, he told the officers that she is “not new,” but really meant “not young.” Kenney-Baden then attacked each one of the women who said Spector pointed a gun at them when they tried to leave. She again focused on government failures at the crime scene and autopsy room, and finally summed up Spector’s case with a twenty-minute itemized list of reasons why the jury must acquit her client.

Court TV commentators remarked how there was no “A-ha” moment in the defense’s closing argument. Sadly, an “A-ha” moment does not involve Kenney-Baden using the PowerPoint to karaoke “Take On Me;” it means that there was no stirring revelation which makes the jury throw their arms up and say “A-ha, innocent!” And without an “A-ha” moment, Pat Dixon of the DA’s office stepped up to the plate for the prosecution’s rebuttal closing argument.

Dixon started things off by completely demolishing Kenney-Baden’s claim that de Souza doesn’t understand English. Several audiotapes of telephone calls from the night of Clarkson’s death are played, and de Souza repeats over and over again “My boss said he thinks he killed somebody” and that Spector held the gun in his right hand, something the defense denies happening. De Souza tells the police on the phone that he’s hiding in his car because he’s afraid of the gun-wielding Spector, and only exits the Mercedes upon seeing the police lights flicker on the driveway. De Souza might not fully comprehend English, but he comprehends reality, and reality according to him is that Spector says “I think I killed somebody.”

If Kenney-Baden put the jurors to bed, then Dixon helped tuck them in. He meticulously and mechanically went through each defense point, negated it, and moved along. His speech lacked fireworks and flare, and many jurors were probably thinking, “I wish deputy DA Alan Jackson was running this show.” Dixon mercifully ended the prosecution’s rebuttal closing argument in two hours. Judge Fidler immediately sent the jurors home for the weekend, knowing that Monday, today, at a half past noon Pacific standard time, they will begin their deliberations to decide whether to convict or acquit Phil Spector for the crime of fatally shooting Lana Clarkson.

He’s done, Phil if you play with fire too long your going to get burned.

CC | 9/10/2007, 10:48 am EST

I doubt the jury will take long and will probably render a guilty verdict. If they do hang I do hope he will be tried again. I think he is guilty as charged of the murder of Lana Clarkson.

Short people shouldn’t have guns.

Joyce danelen@yahoo.com | 9/10/2007, 2:27 pm EST

Phil Spector, is not a freak!

Give me your tired and your poor hostess – yearning for actress work- and I will shoot her head off her spinal cord with my sex pistol.

Linda Snow | 9/10/2007, 2:48 pm EST

Oh, please justice…rule to convict Spector, I truly pray the jury will not be swayed by all the mumble jumble the defense conjured up. We don’t need a two-tier system of justice in this country. De Souza is soooo credible…Phil Spector didn’t have the gun in his hand? How can the defense deny that? Why would De Souza lie? Why didn’t he (Spector) call 911?

Spect-tater | 9/10/2007, 3:12 pm EST

I think that Linda Kenny Baden’s biggest problem with her closing arguement is that her client shot a woman in the mouth with one of his guns.

CC | 9/10/2007, 3:36 pm EST

May Spector be convicted and his parole officer be satan.

Jen | 9/10/2007, 5:52 pm EST

You all are so quick to judge. Spector is innocent. Read the transcripts on court tv.com from the day after the murder. Then try to force your finger into your mouth without breaking anything or causing any damage (now, imagine the force from a gun). Lana Clarkson put the gun in her own mouth. And the jury (hopefully) will find that.

CC | 9/10/2007, 6:22 pm EST

Lana Clarkson is a dead VICTIM. Time for Spector to face the music.
May he can write a new song, “unchained demons” or something.

Jon | 9/10/2007, 6:32 pm EST

So he goes to jail for killing one person and the president gets to retire in his mansion for directly ordering his own citizens and iraqi citizens to death… what a weird country…

Hey Jon | 9/10/2007, 7:56 pm EST

how does one justify the other?

LLC | 9/10/2007, 7:57 pm EST

he’s going home

CC | 9/10/2007, 10:31 pm EST

He’s going down. Goodbye castle. Hello bighouse!!!

LLC | 9/11/2007, 2:29 am EST

no, sorry. he’s going home. well, we’ll see. this is american “justice” for the rich. look how far michael vick’s sentence was knocked down. $$$ spells justice in america (even though i still love this fucked up place).

LLC | 9/11/2007, 3:20 am EST

Jim Garrison | 9/11/2007, 3:23 am EST

When they find the real killers of JFK, msybe then I can be concerned about the death of a useless, money-grubbing waif.

good news | 9/11/2007, 3:56 am EST

When they find the real killers of JFK, maybe then I can be concerned about the death of a useless, money-grubbing waif.

Ana | 9/11/2007, 6:29 am EST

When you have lots of money you can hire a bunch of experts that are nothing but a bunch of high pay HORES that would say anything for the love of money, shame on the disgraceful so call Dr. Baden. I hope justice will prevail and he goes to prison where he belongs.

Treske | 9/11/2007, 6:35 am EST

Phil Spector is innocent; just consider the facts of February 2003. Don’t judge someone because of his look, his house, his money, his character and things that happened 30 years ago. Everyone deserves a fair trial.

CC | 9/11/2007, 1:03 pm EST

Hey Treske, consider the real facts not the defense-a-bull made-up ones. Consider, prior gun violence/cruelty against women, consider eyewitness testimony, consider guilty behavior after the shooting and consider backspatter blood on jacket cuff. Can you say GUILTY????

antidolt | 9/11/2007, 1:27 pm EST

Hey Treske, consider the real facts, not just the defense-a-bull made up ones. Consider the prior history of gun violence/cruelty against women. Consider eyewitness testimony of Adriano DeSouza. Consider Spector’s behavior after the shooting. (At no time did he call 911 and the crime scene had be staged.) Also, consider the backspatter blood evidence on Spector’s jacket cuff. I believe you will find him guilty.

loadster | 9/11/2007, 3:53 pm EST

marvelous. LA. CourtTV. Ridiculous defense excess. Science beaten to faith-based smoke and mirrors. Jury of your peers, my eye. There aren’t enough Phreaky Phils to fill the jury. If there’s any precedent in justice from the OJ trial, this boy better pucker up cuz’ he’s gonna meet some new friends as a convicted killer. And yet that jacket was teflon.

K | 9/11/2007, 9:57 pm EST

HER TEETH WERE BROKEN BECAUSE THE
GUN WAS FORCED INTO HER MOUTH BY SPECTOR. HIS CRAZY ACTIONS FINALLY
CAUGHT UP WITH HIM. SO LONG PHIL–

Treske | 9/12/2007, 3:10 am EST

Just consider the facts of February 2003 not his whole life or his look. I’m not convinced Phil Spector is guilty, that’s why I consider him innocent.
Good luck Phil Spector.

Teresa

OPAL VESTAL | 9/12/2007, 1:27 pm EST

WHY WOULD ANY MAN BE THREATENING WOMEN WITH GUNS AND WHY WOULDN’T PHIL BE JAILED JUST FOR THAT ALONE. YOU ARE CORRECT, “IF YOU PLAY WITH FIRE LONG ENOUGH YOU ARE GOING TO GET BURNED” I SAY LET HIM FEEL SOME OF THE HEAT!

phil is innocent leave him alone. that lana was a gold digger its very clear to all, she was a looser in life and killed herself phil had nothing to do with it. there is no evidence that he is guilty of anything! exempt for the people who are running at the mouth trying to convict phil on false charges, does anyone have any pictures of him pulling guns on people? deal with the facts people not her say from foolish people who are very jealous of him and his success. everyone pray for him he needs are prayers at this time.let the jury find him innocent as he is!!!!!!!!! liz

Antidolt | 9/19/2007, 4:53 pm EST

Unfortunately the Neanderthals are still among us who don’t understand that no means no. These developmental retards think it is alright to club a woman or pull a gun on her to force her to comply with their one-sided wishes. Developing some lovable qualities is not an option. Therefore, it is much better that these throwbacks to the stone age practice safe sex and make themselves at home – alone. If they don’t, they are likely to find themselves the defendants in criminal trials and involved in protracted litigation, when not serving time in prison.

Spike USAROCKS | 9/22/2007, 7:42 pm EST

Fry him
He’s ripped off millions from artists and destroyed lives
no social value

Kim | 9/23/2007, 10:17 pm EST

“,does anyone have any pictures of him pulling guns on people? ”

LIZZY, now if you were in Phil’s house {imagine ,K?.I know you have a great imagination}and out of the clear blue sky Phil were to pull a gun on you would your first instinct be to get the hell out of there “safely” ,not get him riled up,even do what he wanted or take pictures before he might do god knows what?
Remember also in the days of these Phil/gun stories we did not live in a society where almost everyone has a camera/phone on them.
P.S.- You’re just joking when you post right?
You’re taking the piss on us all here …right?
Please say yes.

Kim | 9/23/2007, 10:41 pm EST

“that lana was a gold digger its very clear to all, she was a looser in life”

Well,there ya go.
Case closed.
She deserved to die for such heinous crimes.
All the golddiggers of the world and “losers” {which means? what she didn’t achieve wealth, wasn’t among the “elite”,”exclusive” people of which you speak which made her a “loser”?
Therefore her life was a waste to all that knew and loved her?

So too all that aren’t on Spector’s level of “wealth” {hell sometimes you can have no money and be happier than he seems to be PRE this case} we are to assume that their life isn’t really worth all that much, compared to a Spector type.
If one is found dead under uncertain circumstances {as in this case} we should just right off the less wealthy, less successful person.
Simply “dismiss” their exsistence as not worth that much compared to Phil Spector.
Hell she didn’t produce any hit records {when all is said and done it’s just of entertainment value anyway what he has achieved},not really worthy of those who work on finding cures for sickness, homelessness{that must really disgust you LIZZY,huh, imagine that there are people who have nothing}etc.
As oppossed to your “elite”, “exclusive” friends.

Melinda | 9/24/2007, 1:08 am EST

May you die in jail Phil.

Suzanne | 9/24/2007, 2:59 pm EST

Phil’s ways have finally caught up with him. This is what happens to a freak who messes with The Beatles and screws up The Long and Winding Road.

gladysconner | 9/27/2007, 11:31 am EST

Only two people knew what happened that night, one is dead and the other aint talkin.
The driver places the gun in Spectors hand, however, the gun had been wiped clean, hmm what does that tell you?

TERESA | 9/28/2007, 6:33 am EST

1. Phil Spector innocent.
2. Stop talking about his look,
his character, things that
happened 30 years ago.
3. Consider the facts of 2.2003.
4. Be careful before saying he’s
guilty.
5. “The long and winding road”
very good because of the
talent of Phil Spector.

Ashley | 11/1/2007, 8:44 am EST

He did it. he said “I think I just killed someone.” You can’t just “think”. He did it.
He has an abusive past and he did it.
he also had blood spatter on his jacket. How do you explain that???
If he supposivly didnt do it?
He will pay when he burns in HELL
