Britney Spears Comeback Tracker: Remembering VMAs Past

9/10/07, 2:45 pm EST

The Britney Spears Comeback Tracker was a bit mystified by the troubled star’s less-than-stellar Video Music Awards performance of “Gimme More” last night (as were 50 Cent and Rihanna, based on their painful reaction shots … and the rest of America, based on your comments in our live blog). But rather than wallow in despair, let’s celebrate the Britney of yore: the not-a-girl-not-yet-a-woman who made her VMAs debut by busting out “… Baby One More Time” in 1999. The sequins-clad “Oops! … I Did it Again” girl (she was still in her ellipses phase, evidently) from 2000. The python-draped superstar who was a Slave 4 Us in 2001. The sassy bride-to-be who romped around to Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” before getting a “Hollywood”-worthy kiss from the Material Mom. Click here to check out photos of all those performances, plus a few from last night’s big show. There’s always next year, Brit! It’s never too late to re-do “Toxic”!

We think Britney is great no matter what she does. She is an amazing role model. People need to give her a break about the vma’s because she has made an amazing comeback! She is an original, she is more popular than anyone else today. and we give her props for that. We love you!

David 9-22-07 | 9/22/2007, 2:26 pm EST

Britney needs to get help…her life is a mess!
On the VMA’s she was being laughed at by people in the audience.
Looks like her whole carrer is going up in smoke.
But it’s probley for the better.
Maybe she could score by writing a book about her life…and make millions…like other celeberties have been doing.
Either way she needs allot of help
and I only wish her the best…good luck!

Shellby | 9/18/2007, 9:09 am EST

Everyone already knows MTV isn’t Music Television anymore. MTV was dead about 10 yrs ago, now it’s all about pumping kids head with how to be a spoiled rich white bitch in the city, and primping the next biggest slut. As for the messed up Britney performance. MTV used her to get more ratings. I feel sorry for the girl, not becasue of how she looks but because she doesn’t have enough brains to manage her own career.

Bill | 9/17/2007, 2:21 am EST

If Britney had better people around her giving her advise instead of sitting around thinking of new ways to exploite her and make more money off of her, like someone that really cared about her, she could have had someone say “Wait til the next one. You’re not ready, and rushing it will ruin it” Someone that she could talk to that would get her back into shape, get some good influences to hang around her, not dopey rich white snobs that don’t do anything with their lives except party and hand out sex tapes or people getting drunk and hitting trees. And plus Britney’s gotten a little bit of a wild attitude (comes from living a life of discipline and hard work, and then thrown into a life of excess. It overwhelms them.) She needs to hang out at a Buddhist Temple. She already has the shaved head, and they could teach her to calm herself down and re-discipline her life. Funny thing is half the comments she gets on youtube from people telling her she sucks are from cubicle-working fat asses that no nothing outside of playing the latest X Box games.

Andrea | 9/15/2007, 6:29 pm EST

Leave her the hell alone. Can any of you have 2 kids and get depression and then try to deal with a loser husband and all the freaks looking at your every move. She is just a 25 yar old girl with a serious lack of support and self esteem. This is what is wrong with the world today. Calling people fat and mocking whatever they do does nothing but drag this society down more. We are all unique and i think she is as normal as the rest of us. So lighten up and give her the respect she deserves as a fellow human.

God Bless you Child stay cool

WTF is with Sarah Silverman ? | 9/13/2007, 11:27 pm EST

Spears should’ve hunted down Silverman backstage and punched seven types of shite outta her ! Now THAT would’ve made interesting coverage (rather than that girly-man bitch-slappery that Kid Rock & Tommy Lee indulged in).

Martin | 9/13/2007, 11:11 pm EST

She’s performed better, but it certainly wasn’t a rock-bottom performance (think Elvis circa 1975-77). She looked jaded and unenergetic, made a bad costume decision and as for those skanky hair extensions … (she should’ve done another Sinead O’Connor). The whole thing reeked of MTV exploitation and a desperation to claw back a stalled career.

Quit, or get yourself together kid. But for chrissakes stop listening to those corporate parasites out there and start taking charge of your own destiny !

et al | 9/13/2007, 2:35 am EST

yes, “poor” britney. we all feel so sorry for her.

Tracy | 9/12/2007, 10:57 pm EST

I agree with you, Joe. Very sad. They should just hang it up.

Anthony | 9/11/2007, 9:14 pm EST

I support Britney Spears, I have been to the Palms theater where the Comeback performance was taken place.. not only was the place small and crowded the sound was off as well as the lighting! I noticed the sound going out many times other than Brit’s performance… The lighting was really bad too.
I know that people are really hard on Britney right now… just keep in mind that she did her part… she was asked to take a slower approach when popping to the beats and she did… she also put together the dace routine in a matter of hours due to her original performace with chris angel was not approved due to insurance issues with zoning permits.
So yah she may not have looked like she was not having a good time but who would be happy when there is such a change of plans!
Oh one more thing…. Sarah Silverman… you have some nerve talking about others when hunny you need a nose job and a new career!

Joe | 9/11/2007, 2:04 pm EST

We all know that MTV jumped the shark circa 1995, but this had a sort of Roman empire fall feel to it. Only the unconditional return of all five original VJ’s along with nonstop music videos could redeem this abysmal debacle of a channel.

Ragman | 9/11/2007, 9:38 am EST

Get Britney’s obit ready–she’s going under within a year.

DEONPLAYGROUND | 9/11/2007, 8:12 am EST

Poor Britney, I like her, not as a person, but her entertainment persona…and I imagined something better for the opening act, even though, I think it wasn’t that bad as people say. Doesn’t she have a PR to make some decisions for her? like Madonna has one, a very good one…

Yeah that's right | 9/11/2007, 3:38 am EST

She’d still be the hottest girl on a college campus! hmmm . . . maybe you should think about that one, brit!

Dear Pink Taco | 9/11/2007, 3:12 am EST

I think she’s fucked up enough already, don’t you?

LLC | 9/11/2007, 3:10 am EST

She can just retire and get away from all this shit. She should.

wilson | 9/11/2007, 3:02 am EST

isn’t it ultimately better to focus appreciation towards a band like heart (for example)? i saw a recent performance of theirs on youtube…and talk about being able to sing. i’d rather spend my money seeing them in concert. forget the britney hype - it’s a waste of time to talk about her weight, which everyone seems to be so concerned about.

Jakobi | 9/11/2007, 2:37 am EST

I don’t care that Britney is obviously carrying a bit of extra baby fat now, that’s to be expected.

But put some clothes on. And slow down, maybe stop dancing and just sing well?

Pink Taco. | 9/11/2007, 2:27 am EST

Britney. You Need Scientology in Your Life.

Rancid Planet | 9/11/2007, 2:26 am EST

I just can’t believe it! A dumb blonde girl from the south having babies with a white trash idiot once she’s barely past drinking age?

And she loses her figure along with her life force while she stumbles around all doped up on pills and Jack Daniels thus ruining her career, draining her of her ambition and in general fucking up her whole life?

Wow! What’s next? Another Rambo movie?

(I hate this fucking country sometimes)

sexist assholes | 9/11/2007, 2:16 am EST

hey, give us a break lady.

boutique | 9/11/2007, 12:12 am EST

…but that bad press had nothing to do with music at all. so what was the purpose of any of that press, except to be featured as trivial gossip on the cover of national enquirer.

Richard Morbid | 9/10/2007, 11:29 pm EST

It takes guts to show off a body like that to the world… and if it wasn’t for the Kid Rock and Tommy Lee fight there wouldn’t be any news at all…. remember…”bad press is better than no press at all!”

zapple68 | 9/10/2007, 9:21 pm EST

She sucked, she’s sucked for years. Bye bye Brit, head for the hills.

vv | 9/10/2007, 8:03 pm EST

so britney - everyone seems to agree that she sucked. that she couldn’t lip synch, couldn’t dance, and didn’t even have attitude enough to care. she truly looked depressed. and well, plump. those who defend her for being that way because she has two kids need to check out recent photos of 44 year old elle mcpherson on the beach in australia with her kids - she looks better than just about anyone in a bikini!

so here’s what i think britney should have done (besides stay home) - she should have first and foremost owned the hair or lack there of for the performance - no weaves, just a shock of short blonde hair, we all know she shaved it a few months ago, so hell, go for it. Next she should have worn more clothes, so many clothes that people would have been shocked at how covered up she was. Then, she should have showed up on stage alone, with one spotlight and she should have sung a song in an ‘unplugged’ fashion…one of her oldies or a cover of something by Hole. That would have smoked everyone. But, she and her handlers were too afraid to do something new and different - no creativity. And like every other depressed person she is clinging to what she used to be and not giving in to what she has become - that’s the key, if she threw off the old garb and had taken a shot at the sexist assholes of the music industry she might have made her ‘come back’ real.

charliemapleton(aka CM Funk) | 9/10/2007, 7:30 pm EST

As far as Miss Spears goes, cute shorts, tired act.

Big Mac congrats to GCH by the way!

charliemapleton(aka CM Funk) | 9/10/2007, 7:23 pm EST

I would say the ever sensational(and ever inevitably thick)Miss Keys killed it, but dozens of credit goes to Chris Brown. From Vaudville, to the Rhianna cameo(with here cute booty self), and all the way to the Thriller era, he made the past, present, and future look so damn incredible in 10 minutes. Keep holdin’ it down, kid-o.

AS far as the VMA’s in Vegas goes, what obvious conclusion was there to it? It really was poppin’ like an overflowin’ bowl of Rice Krispies. Next year should be a sure shot.

lalala | 9/10/2007, 6:58 pm EST

oH MY GOD, THAT SUCKED

Was A Fan | 9/10/2007, 6:42 pm EST

I was a fan when I was like 12, so of course I hoped she would do good, make her big come back give us some thing to be proud of! Yeah none of that happened. I will say I bet we hear alot of that song in dance clubs. Great.

crankycoyote | 9/10/2007, 6:17 pm EST

MTV hasn’t mattered for a VERY long time, but at least the VMA’s used to be somewhat entertaining, with a few memorable performances over the years.Last night’s show featured NO actual performances except for the short clips from the various suites.I don’t believe any of those on the main stage did anything but lipsync, and uhhh “dance”.They should just change the name from MTV to “Really Awful Hip Hop Dancing and Dumbass Trainwreck Kids” network.Ugh.

What can you do now?! | 9/10/2007, 6:08 pm EST

Well I guess THAT was what the world was waiting for her to do? Bummer. Gee I can’t wait to see what the disaster we call Britney does next! Maybe she can do some thing as cool as shave her head again! Or I guess she redo last nights train wreck of a performance. It had potential key word HAD. She did a good job f-ing it up! One shot and she blew it big time!

who knows | 9/10/2007, 5:57 pm EST

it must be sh&tty being a “celebrity”.

What in the hell! | 9/10/2007, 5:45 pm EST

I agree… poor Crispy. Hills I see, Sweet 16, um thats a big o’no! Britney… also a big o’no! Poor Crispy. Some one should let lil Crispy in on what good music and tv really is! Heres a hint MTV does not offer it.

What in the hell! | 9/10/2007, 5:30 pm EST

What in the hell sums it all up! We all knew she would fail, we didn’t want it to happen, but we all knew it was coming. How sad for her, to go out like that. What she thought would bring her back, took her even farther out to sea! Poor Britney shes a fucking mess.

Bob Dylan | 9/10/2007, 5:25 pm EST

All I have to say is…what did you expect? Were you expecting the second coming of Pavoratti?

It’s time to send that cow out to pasture…permanently.

I feel sad and sorry for Chrispy.

Bad Publicity | 9/10/2007, 5:19 pm EST

is trivial over the longrun.
this will soon be forgotten.

Oh geez what was that?! | 9/10/2007, 5:15 pm EST

Can we all say…. don’t quite your day job Brit! That was painful to watch. She didn’t even try! Opening act and she shut down the show, and not in a good way, before it even got going! Lets help her out and break the news to her… YOUR A HAS BEEN!

brian gallagher | 9/10/2007, 5:11 pm EST

MTV and Britney both suck.Hey someone should start a new revolution and make a million bucks featuring music and videos with bands and shit.No rap tho because it ain`t music it is just thugs bragging bout their wieners.

C | 9/10/2007, 5:10 pm EST

She did that preformance terribly on purpose so eveyone would talk about her and it worked

Johnny Kickass | 9/10/2007, 5:06 pm EST

Ok, can we officially say that Britney is finally, finally over?

Her only talent is dressing like a porn star. Woo-hoo.

Britney, you have your millions, now just go away and stop raping our eardrums. Thanks.

Old School | 9/10/2007, 5:01 pm EST

C’mon… Whoever the stuffed shirt EXEC was that planned the Britney debacle last night out to be flogged and fired! The poor woman has problems. She needs continued professional help. MTV does too! Sorry, but that’s the sad truth of it all.

Poor Brit. Games over. | 9/10/2007, 4:49 pm EST

I think it is terrible that some one that had such an impact on pop music as we knew it could go and put on such a disappointing act. She looked dazed and drugged and like she would rather die than be there. She didn’t know the words, didn’t dance like she we all know she can. She seemed like she had never done this before. Almost the deer in the head lights thing going on. I must say, good try Brit, but I think it’s over. Focus on those kids. Oh yeah and what Sarah Silverman said about Brit, shame on you Sarah shame on you. Funny but unappreciated.

Loudei | 9/10/2007, 4:40 pm EST

MTV is to blame for completely destroying music… I mean it’s a fact. WHERE’S THE NEXT BIG THING!!?

TPG | 9/10/2007, 4:40 pm EST

Fat, drunk and talentless is no way to go through life.

What would this white trash, redneck princess know about music???

Can she even spell the word???

RocketRaCoon | 9/10/2007, 4:30 pm EST

Hey Britney make a few serious movies and do broadway. You have accomplished everything else and these people who need a role model will never be happy with anything you do anyway! Rick Nelson said it long ago…u go to please yourself! An experienced writer.
Yours,
RR

LADYLIBERTY | 9/10/2007, 4:30 pm EST

SHE GAVE IT A SHOT I`LL GIVE HER AN “A ‘’ FOR EFFORT EVERY ONE DID THE BEST THEY COULD –NOW SHE CAN SPEND SOME TIME WITH HER PRESIOUS TREASURES -HER BABIES-

ken vail jr | 9/10/2007, 4:22 pm EST

i hate to sound OLD lol, but i discovered MTV in early 1982 and at one time, it was the coolest thing in the world. it gradually turned into utter shit, and it seems to get worse each year! at least vh1 classic is kind of got the right idea-you can actually learn something interesting about music and its’ history. how many real rock n roll bands do you find on there these days? i did find the kid rock-tommy lee fight amusing though.

Dylan | 9/10/2007, 4:13 pm EST

Face it Britney fell off, its over for her, cut her loose. I’m tired of hearing all this sympathy B.S. for her. Look at all the others who came up with her they are more mature in their music and have grown. Christina Aguilera isn’t pullin’ s#*t like Britney. Gwen has had a kid and has always look fit. Britney’s trying to recapture glory thats evaporated 3 years ago. MTV should have had open with Kanye and 50 pumping out their hit singles. Their music is more real than Britney’s lip-synching and guarantee it would have popped the night off just right. K-Fed gets the last laugh, which is kinda sad.

Anonymous | 9/10/2007, 3:59 pm EST

MTV is a disgrace to music or the opposite? Quit calling it M as in Music TV already. As for Britney. Leave her alone. She is only human. Maybe if the performance was for another network it would have been better.

gross | 9/10/2007, 3:57 pm EST

Ms spears was never worth remembering. Talentless is the epitome of the manufactured music MTV promotes and the music industry pumps out. She was just one such example.

This kind of ‘music’ may be good enough for 14 year old girls, and as coasters.

Negrobula | 9/10/2007, 3:39 pm EST

Sorry, did she just wrote: “… best thing that happen to music”??? Now they call that music???

Chrispy | 9/10/2007, 3:30 pm EST

I think u all should live Britney alone. she the best thing that has happen to music in a long time. her show last night was the best. I also think MTV is great JT is worng show more shows like the hills and sweet 16 they are really good shows. so good job Mtv good job.

Shawna | 9/10/2007, 3:24 pm EST

I totally agree. Can anyone tell me why they are called “Music Television”?

John | 9/10/2007, 3:12 pm EST

Thanks MTV for absolutely ruining music as we once new it. What happened to real music like we saw up until woodstock 94. After that, I guess MTV decided that good music wasn’t a good idea. By all means, please show us more of “The Hills” instead of music videos from artists with real talent.
