Attention all lovers of Hip-Hop. Anyone who claims that the medium is dead is about to get the proverbial shot in the arm that it deserves. And it’s coming from none other than…….Kanye’ West and 50 Cent?! WTF?! Who would’ve thought? Not me that’s for sure. For years amongst sagging record sales and marketing blitzes disguised as meaningless beefs amongst the stars, Hip-Hop has lost a bit of it’s luster. I mean sure, some of the music’s most prolific artist to ever touch the microphone and the pen are coming from this crop of entertainers, Lil’ Wayne, Andre’ 3000, and Kanye West are the only examples that I shall cite in the lyricism department, but the medium as a whole has had to chill at a few rest stops to catch it’s breath and regroup. And sure, Producers such as Timbaland, Will.I.Am, Pharrell, Polow Da Don, Kanye’ West, and Swizz Beats have all but put radio in a chokehold the past few years. Pop Radio that is. The urban scene ,however is slowly being neglected in favor of the crossover. You’re more likely nowadays to hear about a producer who becomes a household name only after he’s crafted a pop anthem. Fuck the streets. And therein lies the conflict. We as artist have strived for so long for crossover success, we’ve all but forgotten about our core audience in favor for the former’s mass appeal. Mixtapes while being an important way to break an artist, can ultimately lead to their downfall because of dangerous overexposure. And I know that many of you will say that Mixtapes are the truest representation of the medium and are the closest barometer of what’s going on in the streets. My argument against that notion is that Hip-Hop is about innovation and forward thinking. And though many mixtapes are littered with lame remixes of top 40 hits, there are only a few that have any worthwhile exclusives.
Which is why this Tuesdays match up in this edition of Hip-Hop survivor seems so bloated. The medium is in desperate need of an overhaul and folks are obviously pulling from every which way they can to give it a jumpstart. If it wasn’t Kanye’ West and 50 cent “Battling it out” for a weeks dominance on the sales charts, It would’ve been anyone else dropping a record with the star power to make anyone care. Pretty soon R&B artist will be doing the same thing. Usher will come back to claim his supposed throne from Chris Brown. Johnta Austin will challenge Neyo to write a song and release it under the same artist at the same time and see who does better. Beyonce and Ciara will beef like there’s no tomorrow about who’s the best female entertainer, while Lauren Hill will come back and steal the soulful Diva crown from Alicia Keys and Mary J. Blige respectively. And believe it or not, many of us will look at that hypothetical shift and call it wack. Have you ever heard of Kelly Clarkston dropping an album the same day as Avril Lavigne and needing such a slick marketing campaign to sell their records. If Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke dropped CD’s on the same day, do you think there would be a winner take all fiasco such as this one to prove who’s the best blue eyed soul singer? Hell no! Why, because they don’t need it. No one does. Except for Hip-Hop. If we can look at the aforementioned scenarios and see the absurdity of it’s premise, why is it that hip-hop needs such gimmicks to sell records? Many people when asked this question would tell me that if I have to ask, then I don’t know hip-hop. It isn’t that I don’t know Hip-Hop, after all the battle is one of Hip-Hop’s purest elements. But isn’t that something reserved for an actual BATTLE or a rival? And 50 cent and Kanye West obviously aren’t beefing. I mean, they both said so. They’ve even gone so far as to say that it’s a planned marketing ploy. If you watched the VMA’s where they both presented an award for “Earth Shattering Collaboration, when they came face to face in that good ole’ “Vicious” boxer standoff, I didn’t know if they were gonna kiss each other or what. The brawl between Kid Rock and Tommy Lee in the audience during Alicia Keys’ performance seemed more threatening by comparison. Which makes their self-imposed consequences they’ve placed as wagers for not outselling each other the first week of release all the more ludicrous. But why do we buy into it. Do we as listeners actually believe that all of this hype is gonna make their product better? I know one thing, with the way that they’re hyping this thing, their albums better be their end all be all releases. Otherwise, this week will be historic for hip-hop alright. Historically disappointing.

I belive this competition is a brilliant thing for hip hop nd it dosent matter who sells more they both make brilliant music nd thats all that matters. Hip Hop aint dead.

I’ve listened to both 50 and Kanye’s albums. I wish they had the same amount of tracks so that I could judge them better overall, but hey. What can you do? I rated the first 13 tracks on both albums (since kanye has only 13 tracks), and I liked Kanye’s album better than 50’s. Go Team Kanye! lol. Kanye’s lyrical skills make his songs as well as the beat. 50 just has the beat, and even so…all the beats don’t sound like anything new. It’s a repetitive album. I can listen to “Graduation” from start to finish, and then listen to it again. I can’t with “Curtis” cuz there’s no substance under the surface. It gives me a headache, lol. I don’t have an idea who will win the battle, because 50 has massive popularity to back him up, and kanye has a truer talent and something to really rap about.

I don’t criticize music i have never listened to, so I’m not gonna sit here and say 50 cent sucks.

I own Get Rich etc. and its really not that bad, i like it. But if you have heard Kanye’s Album music, its much better than a lot of his released-singles, like Gold Digger and Stronger. He knows those songs will attract people to buy the CD but his deep music with r&b/gospel integration is what separates him, and 50 cent cant touch that.

When my personal opinion counts 50 cent is not talented as a rapper. He’s clever though. Kanye’s music is universal. Both albums are good but Kanye’s is way better. 50cent+50cent=$1 because it sounds the same as the last albums. I’ve been a 50 fan when he was pushin’ “That Ain’t Gangsta” but sounds like he aint gansta cause he’s falling into his own tracks. So far kanye is keeping it real and once again universal in the part of bumping it in your ride, while working out, celebrating success with your girl, kids can listen to it, and at a social gathering or club! 50 needs to step down a notch to become an influence to get where he’s at following Jay-Z’s steps and make way for new generational talent. Focus on your clothing line and 50 water. But prefer 40 water!

I have both CDs and both are great albums. But you can’t really compare the two. Each is like a well directed, award winning movie of different genres.

Fifty’s is like that intense Scarface flick you have in your DVD collection… the unrated version! It’s hard hitting with real graphic slices of life… sex, violence, action, romance etc. This movie can’t be done without gratuitous T&A, wild shootouts, a car chase or some motherfucker getting shot in the head point blank! This is what Fifty does best. And, in my opinion, he delivered on this album… “Amusement Park”, “Ayo technology”, “My Gun Go Off”, “I Get Money” all talk about hard hitting, real life, grown up shit. If you’ve ever went to a strip club, sweet-talked a girl for some sex, had beef with someone or really felt yourself because you had it better than some one else, then this is an album you could relate to. This album nourishes the hungry bad boy/girl in us all.

Kanye’s flick is like a conscious, soulful Spike Lee joint… Do The Right Thing or School Daze. This one’s rated R and its purpose is to get you to look a little closer at yourself. This movie’s characters are a little more colorful, exaggerated and animated. But, their stories are true-to-life and just as hard hitting as any action flick. No one gets shot in the head in this film… at least not with bullets. Kanye did his thing on this album. No one does songs like “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” in hip-hop. This album is clearly meant for your quieter, cocky and more introspective side.
