Kanye is one of the few artists in hip-hop doing anything interesting. “Stronger” has to be the best use of sampling in the past decade.

The more someone uses sampling, the more it shows how much talent they don’t have. If they were so talented, why can’t they come up with the stuff on their own? James Brown is probably the most sampled artist ever, and there’s a reason – he actually had talent – and didn’t need to ‘borrow’ from anyone to prove it.

Well-used sample? There’s a word that applies to that term – oxymoron. The only time a ’sample’ is ‘well-used’ is before it becomes a sample, when it’s found in its original composition. There’s also no shame in creating an original item on your own, it can be done.

Actually, I do have experience in music production, including a degree. However, you are correct that I do not have experience in sampling, which is because I choose to be original. I tend to believe that people have more respect for someone that creates something with their own mind and talent, rather than using something that someone else has already done. There is no musical talent in rap “music”.

Is Kanye interesting? Yes. Simply because his music at least attempts at a creative departure from the genre that is mainstream hip-hop. I often think of him as a male Missy Elliott, though that is perhaps an unfair comparison. This is all said with a touch of irony, of course, because Mr. Original so heavily uses samples in his work. “Stronger” may not be the “best use of sampling in the past decade” as one user mentioned, but it is certainly one of the least hidden, overtly used samples. In fact, many times “Stronger” feels like Daft Punk with heavier lyrics, which may or may not be a relevent accomplishment. In any event, I can’t help but feel slightly bitter at Mr. West simply because “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” (the original Daft Punk song) wasn’t a hit for Daft Punk, though it certainly will be for Kanye. Oh well.

I’m rooting for Kanye all the way; artistically, there’s really no competition, so I’d like to believe – however naively – that West can pull it off based on sheer talent.

That being said, I’d almost like to see Kenny Chesney kick both of their asses (with Kanye a close second). Aside from the Dixie Chicks, I’m not really a country music fan, but given the ridiculous hype surrounding the Kanye and 50 albums, I can’t imagine a more shocking – or fitting – ending to this little dramedy. Don’t count out Kenny yet. Why? Something tells me that Kanye’s and Fiddy’s cd’s are gonna be downloaded illegally a whole lot more than Kenny’s.

damn…..I personally think its sad that both can’t just be, and do what they do. Music in general is full of what I call “music snobs”. These are people that feel because they might have more of an extensive knowledge of music, their points are more valid. This is ART! No opinion is correct. And ok….yeah a few music snobs and their offspring might look down on this particular type of music…truth of the matter is that its still apart of pop culture, so you cant expect Rolling Stone not to cover it. Rolling Stone is and has always been about covering the happenings in MUSIC…not “good music”, not “bad music”, just MUSIC PERIOD. This type of music might not be for you….Rolling Stone felt it was big enough to cover this issue, and I personally believe they’re right in doing so. For one, reguardless of what you believe….at one point, hip hop actually delivered quality music and showcased promising artists. This particular cover and article are important because it’s shows the possible rebirth, and possible demise of a popular music. This cover still means something in the scope music. Personal opinion is personal opinion…..but any musician across the board knows that this is actually kind of imporant because its a big event within a popular genre of music. If there were a big event going on in any genre of music (Country, Rock, Indie etc.) i’m sure Rolling Stone would be right on top of it as well. Anyway, I talk too much. Geez, it’s 2007, not 2005…things change. I initially thought 50 would sell more, but I now think otherwise. “Stronger” is currently number 2 on the BB Hot 100 and Kanye has consistently beat 50 in iTunes presales. Kanye is creative, 50 is not. All he does is try and get the biggest people in the music industry to work with him. He got freaking JT and Timbaland on AYO Technology and guess what? Having both albums I can honestly say Kanye’s is far better than the curtis album. While I don’t give a rats ass about rap music today (I loved the golden era; 91-96) Kanye at least brings it back to those good days musically. While 50 basically rehashes the same 15-17 tracks over and over, if it’s not a magic stick, it’s a candy shop, now it’s an amusement park..jeez.

50 is a completely manufactured artist. He has never done anything original or good lyrically. The only reason he’s popular is that smart people (i.e. Dre) controlled his career in the beginning in the way that would make the most money.

Kanye is original and collaborates with good artists (Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def). The sampling is a little bit of an issue, but at least he does it well (compare his sampling with Pdiddy–doesn’t even go with the vocals usually).

I’m a Kanye Fan, but I Love Fif’s Creativity and constant grind. This is REALLY apples to Oranges and ya’ll get caught up and judge who’s best depending upon your favorite, be real. This time out, 50 has the better album if you into club bangas and gangsta rap. Kanye has the better album if u like listening to things that matter from an artist, things YOU as listener might deal with. All fif has changed is his hooks, the content in his verses is repetitive…guns, hoes, drug sales, flashy clothes & cars and what they cost. He’s become predictable. People who really listen to music picked up on that after his second album, thats why it didnt do as well. And as hot as “Curtis” is, I don’t believe it will do as well as “the massacre”. 50’s album is better this time but he’s not a better artist than Kanye. Kanye is a top 10 lyricist and a top ten producer…50 a top ten artist…but why we gotta take sides if they both trully make good music. Truthfully they 2 opposites of the spectrum, but i gotta go wit Kanye. I’ve listened to both in the past, but Kanye just on another level. He constantly advancin, not only his music but hip hop in general man.
