Single Minded: New Tracks From Patti Scialfa, Just Jack, Chiodos, Super Furry Animals and Ted Nugent, Plus Britney and Scarface

9/4/07, 9:49 am EST

Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more.

Patti Scialfa, “Run Run Run” [Patti Scialfa MySpace]
Scialfa returns after a three-year absence with this beautifully worn, gospel-tinged single. That household is clearly unfamiliar with the phrase “summer vacation.”

Just Jack, “Writer’s Block” [Just Jack MySpace]
You know all those bands who are buzzy in Britain, but no one in America knows who they are? Just Jack is one of those. How you feel about this will depend largely on how you feel about calculated self-awareness. And OMC.

Chiodos, “Lexington” [Official Site]
Yet another emo band gracefully transitions into epic, artfully constructed concept-rock. Ladies and gentlemen, the most influential band of the Nineties wasn’t Nirvana — it was Queensryche.

Super Furry Animals, “Run Away” [Official Site]
Welsh quintet nicks a few tricks from the Beach Boys. Or, as they’re known in Wales, the Xyyzfdxreng Mwang.

Ted Nugent, “Journey to the Center” [Ted Nugent MySpace]
Nugent has been clamoring for press by suggesting certain politicians “suck on his machine gun.” Which is fitting, because if anyone is an expert on sucking …

Britney Spears, “Gimme More,” “Cold as Fire” [All About Muzic]
Two more singles flutter out from Team Spears. “Gimme More” suggests she may have a few tricks left after all; “Cold as Fire” proves she’s still a little confused about basic scientific principles. Up next: “Heavy Like Parsley.”

Scarface, “Never” [Spine]
Scarface finally returns to rescue us from our barren hellish futureland of Yung Joc and T-Pain. Hearing this is like that scene in Pleasantville where Joan Allen all of a sudden gets Magritte. That is, if Joan Allen also said stuff like, “Get on my level, or go get a shovel.”

Operation Mindcrime was a great album. I guess not everyone can comprehend complex rock arrangements.

I laughed my butt off listening to Shitney’s “Cold as Fire” & “Baby Boy” – nasal voice. Every night I pray that she does show up at the VMA’s & fails miserably or at the very least, gets booed off the stage. Maybe then, she will go away for a few years & get the mental health help that she so OBVIOUSLY needs.
