Rock Reality Show Recap: “Man Band” Sureshot Shoot Surely Unfunny Video

9/4/07, 1:16 pm EST

Misson: Man Band tracks a reality show’s efforts to restore four former boy-banders to their chart-topping glory. RS’ Rock Reality Show Recaps track our efforts to be sympathetic to their cause. Here’s our fifth report:

Thirty Mantastic Minutes in Four Sentences: Following last week’s halftime embarrassment at the Orlando Magic game, Sureshot call a 9 AM band meeting to tell manager Katie McNeil they want to fire her. LFO’s Rich Cronin says any downfall he’s ever had has been because of management (he doesn’t specify whether or not he includes his leukemia on this list of grievances). “Miss Katie” tells the group that she has their best interests in mind, even though we all know she is a VH1 Celebreality spy, and the band keeps her on board, for now, pending how next episode’s Mansion performance turns out. Next task for this episode is to shoot a video for that song they keep performing every week, yet don’t ever tell us what the title is.

The Rockin’ Struggle: The boy-banders learn their production budget for their music video is roughly Amy Winehouse’s half-hourly drug rate, so with their $500 limit, they purchase a bunch of costumes, including a “Nero” costume (a long sheet and/or toga) for Color Me Badd’s Bryan Abrams, who by the way has lost eight pounds, despite the constant grimacing whenever he’s asked to do twenty-five jumping jacks. The boys also employ indie-rock’s iconic green screen to make a video about a wizard who tries to change Sureshot into something, and Abraham Lincoln is there, and they run around and laugh and pretend they’re rappers and get tomatoes thrown at them. If this sounds random, it’s because it is, as Sureshot is trying to strike gold in the YouTube era (The video, as of typing this, is still not on YouTube). To quote *NSYNC’s Chris Kirkpatrick, “I only think this video will be funny to us.” Yup.

The Funniest Moment(s): We’re sure we weren’t the only viewers who genuinely thought Kirkpatrick’s music-video idea of throwing baloney at random people would’ve been a hell of a lot better than the final product. Later, when Abrams’ wife Kim comes to visit, we learn she isn’t fond of 98 Degrees’ Jeff Timmons because of something Timmons said to Abrams when they once were on the road together, during what had to be the worst tour in history.

The Rockin’ Finale: For the final ten minutes, the band holds a casting call for female backup dancers for their Mansion show. Fourteen Rock of Love outcasts gyrate for a few minutes apiece, much to the pleasure of the Man Band, who were previously only used to getting this kind of attention from fourteen-year-old girls. Cronin instantly proclaims that the casting call was the second best day of his life, coming in just behind the greatest day of his life, the Sureshot video shoot, and usurping the previous second best day of his life, the birth of his child sometime in the future. Next week, tensions bubble as Kirkpatrick and Miss Katie argue, and the Mansion show seemingly goes off with a few hitches.

How many people out there realize that not one guy in this “band” has A SINGLE OUNCE OF TALENT!!!!!….they aren’t “has-beens,” they’re “never-shoulda-beens,”…..the y were embarassing as boy-banders, now they’re just pathetic….they should be washing dishes or scrubbing floors somewhere….and that guy who tries to rap…….hah!!!!…..buy all these guys an Allman Brothers disc of your choice and send them to a quiet room somewhere….before they go off to their dish-washing or floor-scrubbing gigs, which are certainly right around the corner…..

Actually Bryan from Color Me Badd could sing well in the past. Boyz to Men and Bootsy Collins once worked with Color Me Badd and they don’t work with junk just to make a dollar. Bryan and the rest of the boys pulled off intricate harmonies and Bryan could blow. The songs the group performed weren’t exactly timeless, but he personally sang well. Now at 300 pounds, too much booze and being out of practice, he’s struggling to hit the notes. It’s sad. The other guys were never talented.

Personally ive never been a fan of any of these bands in the past…with that said, I’m extremely impressed by how great they sound. For those people with the negative comments & Danny Kraps, When was the last time you got on stage and performed to sellout crouds who paid to see you,not a basketball halftime show where the croud of men were pissed that there wasnt dancing cheerleaders. Lets see you do that loser.

Well I’ve been watching it in the UK cause my girlfriend was a Jeff Fan back in the day, and I have to say I moaned and moaned about having to watch, so traded a footy match a show, and I am actually eating my words because I am shocked to see how humble these guys are, and Bryan anf Jeff can sing. I actually wish them luck, hope they do well, ignore the negative comments! I’ll take my Mrs to a show when they make it over here. Oh and my girlfriend plays the songs up on myspace to whoever comes over and not one person has disliked the songs.

Tysa | 10/24/2007, 2:06 am EST

I’m in awe of how quickly these guys can pull a song together- and a good song at that. These guys obviously have talent. They can write and sing – I wish them much success.
