We’ve seen John Mayer’s adoration of Alicia Keys in action before, and in a recent blog post on his Web site the singer-guitarist goes all googly-eyed talking about working with Keys on her forthcoming album, As I Am. “We wrote a song called ‘Lesson Learned’ and it was one of the best creative experiences I’ve ever had,” Mayer gushes. “Oh, and her lead-off single ‘No One’ is the track of the year. That’s all there is to it. It’ll blow you away when you hear it. She’s evolved so much as an artist, it’s crazy. She’s made one beautiful and BRAVE album. Okay! Okay. That’s enough slobbering over Alicia.”
Mayer also writes about his new song, “Say,” which he composed for a film that comes out this winter. He didn’t reveal the name of the movie, but indicated that this was the first time he’d ever written on assignment. “I don’t know how much harder it gets than to see a beautiful, bittersweet movie and then have to write a song that matches the tone,” Mayer writes of the experience.
Other items on John Mayer’s to-do list? Finish up vacation in Mexico, do some “purposely non-music stuff” to clear his head, study Top 40 radio to keep his pop songwriting prowess and think about heading back into the studio to record a new album. Mayer says he already knows what he’s calling the next record, though he has yet to reveal the title or tone of the album.
