New Music Tuesdays: Manu Chao, Animal Collective

9/4/07, 1:31 pm EST

Rolling Stone’s Christian Hoard breaks down one of this week’s big new releases — Manu Chao’s La Radiolina — and one of next week’s upcoming albums, Animal Collective’s Strawberry Jam, arguing that Chao’s globe-trotting LP doesn’t require listeners to be great lovers of world music, and that the New York-based psych rockers are still creating beautiful, albeit baffling, soundscapes.

Writers write.

Androvette | 9/4/2007, 3:44 pm EST

you have to hire actual writers first!

The reviews were decent, but I’m still a bit confused why you would review an album on New Music Tuesday that has yet to come out? Why wouldn’t you just save it until next week? Unless of course you will with the usual stale predictability review 50 Cent and Kanye West.

The written reviews are online too. Learn to read dipshit…

corporate sellout | 9/4/2007, 10:17 pm EST

Is there any way to actually disable the sound of
the Miller beer commerial so that I can listen to
the audio on the New Music Tuesdays reveiw?

Great job, Christian! Enjoyed your reviews very much. Just downloaded the Manu Chao-first listen-really good! Thanks.

Man oh man. Ed is king but the VH bros are controlling pricks. No doubt . Proof we never know what goes on behind the scenes. Wolfie should do alright out there. I don’t know. VH to me is Ed, Alex, Mike and Roth. Sammy was great to. Cherone was good but never given a shot, I kind of wanted 1 more album with him. VH will always be what it is. Ed and Alex’s band. They call all the shots.

Ooops. accidentally posted in the wrong comments.

I love you Christian! You always have the best reviews. Can’t wait to hear what you’ve got to say next time. See yah.

I’m sorry ,but this man is an idiot.
How could he ever say that Manu Chao(?) is better than Animal Collective? Did he even listen to Strawberry Jam or did he just disregard what may be the record of the year? This only further proves that Rolling Stone does nothing but stagnate the modern music scene rather than push things forward. I’m so pissed that THIS publication is as influential on young people as it is. Well, everyone, let’s just sit back and watch music go to shit (if it hasn’t already…).

Michelle B. | 9/8/2007, 10:26 pm EST

Jeremy, he was simply stating his opinion. It doesn’t make him an idiot.

Ramiro | 9/11/2007, 7:10 pm EST

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH HIM.

what happened to the young cameron crowes? wheres the heart in music journalism? its all paid off in bribes by sony bmg you know it is. fallout boy, panic at the disco, and maroon 5 all getting cover stories? yes, something is amiss…

I don’t think anyone can expect someone from rolling stone to really appreciate animal collective, or to give a real fair review of them. They are great and have been great since sung tongs came out in 2004. Just saw their show in Austin, amazing :) . (It’s not rock music, get out of your comfort zone and grow some ears.)
