Led Zeppelin Reunion Tix On Sale in London? Prank, Lie or Ticket Goof Part Three?

9/4/07, 11:03 am EST

The recent Van Halen tour hoo-ha proved what everybody already knows: reunion tours are big news, and even bigger business. Murmurings about a Led Zeppelin get together have been audible for quite some time (Rock Daily got Vegas odds on the reunion in June), and this weekend advertisements appeared in England offering tickets for a Zep show at the 02 in London. Promoter Harvey Goldsmith, who along with Bob Geldof brought us Live Aid, was closely involved with the launch of this venue, issued a cryptic public statement in response to the ads. “There have been at least four events advertised which I suspect either don’t exist or where no tickets are on sale or indeed dates finalized,” Goldsmith said. His comments, which interestingly don’t include a straight-up “it’s not happening” denial, have only fueled the reunion-rumor fires, The Guardian reports. And as we all know, ticket-vendor goofs aren’t uncommon: Here in the U.S., Ticketmaster accidentally released early information about both Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young’s upcoming tours. Earlier this year it was suggested that Zeppelin would reunite for a one-off gig honoring late Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun. At the time, Robert Plant dismissed this rumor with a chuckle, saying, “If there was one, then there wouldn’t be enough doctors to support it!”

These rumors come up every couple months. There is an old Sun article that people keep stumbling upon and then holding it up as fact, and then it launches a new wave of Zep rumors. I hope they don’t reunite, and I’m a huge Zep fan. Plant can’t sing like he used to, and there is no way they can replace Bonzo. R.I.P. Led Zep.

Ardie | 9/4/2007, 12:13 pm EST

This could be the ‘mutha’ of all reunion tours if realized. We don’t care who the drummer will be for as long as we see this 3 guys playing the songs we all love to see live, we the fans can all ‘rest in peace’…

Mighty Zep | 9/4/2007, 12:25 pm EST

I turned 26 Saturday. A Zep reunion? I’d be okay with dying at 26…

Ghost of John Bonham | 9/4/2007, 12:27 pm EST

It’ll be a bloody day in hell before those lads reunite for a tour! These are nothing but rumours my gullible Rolling Stone readers. Rumours I tell ya.

I cannot even type that without snickering.

Rev Al Bum | 9/4/2007, 12:44 pm EST

Zep should be the opening act for Britany Spears.

Eric | 9/4/2007, 12:47 pm EST

Yeah…I agree with choosing not to reunite. Some things are better left untouched.

“hire david grohl and tour the world.”

i’ll do it!

now we can all rest in peace

jungleland | 9/4/2007, 1:09 pm EST

There is no need for them to reunite. Page and Plant were smart to do their tour instead. The first tour was very creative with song choices and the second was a best of LZ tribute show. I’d rather see Plant’s Strage Sensation band and have a handful of LZ thrown in.

Matt S. | 9/4/2007, 1:10 pm EST

I’d rather they not. There are few bands who have had the dignity to not reunite (Zep, The Clash, Refused…..props if anyone here knows of em) and as much fun as this could be to see, I think it would be better to keep Zep on our turntables and off the money-making stage. However, if Page wanted to hook up with the Crowes again, I would be all about that.

Tyler Durden | 9/4/2007, 1:12 pm EST

I like the Dave Grohl idea

Geri Toll | 9/4/2007, 1:14 pm EST

I’m a huge fan, but really, c’mon!! Have you seen Jimmy recently? He looks like the love baby of bloated Jerry Lewis and Rosanne Barr. And then there is Robert. He sounds worse (these days) than Jimmy looks!! Ugh! Please let a good thing remain that way, don’t f*ck it up for reunion sake!!

Hallzee | 9/4/2007, 1:35 pm EST

These rumors have been around every year since Bonzo died. I saw the Page/Plant Tour back in 95 and Jimmy left the leads to the other guitar player. When Jimmy Page needs the “Other Guitar Player” on stage with him, then they are no longer Led Zeppelin. Although if Jason was to drum for them and they went on tour, I would be there to see it. I would go watch Page play the Assisted Living Tour when it comes to that.

Josh | 9/4/2007, 1:36 pm EST

As much as I love some of these bands, come on! People getting excited over Springsteen, who still has the energy and the passion to rise above that “nostalgia trip” thing, is okay but Zeppelin? Plant can’t hit those notes anymore, people! He can’t come close! Page has become such a sloppy guitarist over the past few years! Do yourself a favor and buy all the studio albums and if you’re still not satisfied, pick up How the West Was Won! Leave well enough alone!

this is a crath 22 in my opinion. if they did do a tour. there would be a new following of led zeppelin fans just, because their name is being promoted and people are to stupid to look into good music without the media being involved. and horrible just because they can’t hold their own anymore. btw robert plant and the sensation was horrible there was no spirit in the playing

dan | 9/4/2007, 2:11 pm EST

Hope the rumors aren’t true. Bonham was a huge part of the Zeppelin sound. His drumming style and tone was as much a part of zeppelin as Page’s guitar and Plant’s vocals.

Just listen to the drums on “when the levee breaks” that whole song is about those drums. It’s like Stewart Copeland’s hi-hat work on “walking on the moon”; its the defining sound of the song.

Page and Plant were right to disband Zeppelin after Bonzo’s death. Leave it be boys.

Mega Balls | 9/4/2007, 2:24 pm EST

I heard it’s true. Not only is Led Zep going on tour, but they’re actually going to dig up the grave of John Bonham and prop his casket on stage during each concert so it could be a real reunion. Bonham will be there in spirit. Also free joints of the highest quality weed will be passed around to all ticket holders to bring back the vibe of the earlier Led Zep concerts of the 60’s and 70’s. Damn, I’m so there!

George | 9/4/2007, 2:25 pm EST

z-o-s-o | 9/4/2007, 3:42 pm EST

I was fortunate to see Page and Plant when they toured together during the 90’s. It was the closest I’ll ever get to experiencing a Led Zep concert. Fast-forwarding to present day…I think that Led Zep should be remembered as they were in their glory days, by listening to their music, but not by way of a reunion tour.

The only decent rock music is of classic rock bands reuniting because these god-awful emo/grunge/metal bands think it’s uncool to have melodies and hooks in their songs.

I Hate Elititstss | 9/4/2007, 7:23 pm EST

Rockaway Baby, if you actually enjoyed music, and were a real fan, you would discover that there are a lot of truly great bands out there. Nowadays, the best music in the world is fairly underground. Even still, there still is the White Stripes and Radiohead whom I’m sure you have heard of. And if you don’t like those bands, you’re hopeless. I hate comments like that. idiot.

Androvette | 9/4/2007, 7:53 pm EST

Sorry Dave, you’re great, but it’s Jason Bonham’s gig!

underground | 9/4/2007, 8:49 pm EST

Underground should have just stayed put in the underground to begin with. Now “alternative” is a term being misused as a brand to market copycat bands which all sound the same.

Emo listener | 9/4/2007, 9:06 pm EST

who?s led? zeppelin? question? marks? are? awesome? yeah?

JMS | 9/4/2007, 9:08 pm EST

The website isn’t new. It’s been around for a few years and used to have screen savers and other stuff you could download. 11/13 is the release date of the expanded DVD version of The Song Remains the Same and a new CD compilation. Go to jimmypageonline.com for the full scoop.

St.Michael | 9/4/2007, 9:18 pm EST

Problem is, there is nothing new under the sun, and that’s no slam against the Stripes or Radiohead. The longer you listen to rock music, the more it all begins to sound the same. Guess that’s why one can appreciate the older groups.
I’m glad the Stripes are still playing guitars and that kids are getting turned on to it. But you’ll excuse me for saying that there is a reason people appreciate the originals.

I agree that there is nothing new under the sun, and I like bands like Radiohead and The White Stripes. Alternative just isn’t what I remembered it being. I think that if bands and music artists are able to remain true to themselves, they are at least on the right track.

Sorry DEG | 9/4/2007, 11:35 pm EST

I know it’s hard to believe, but this time Dave Grohl’s not the best man for the job. Jason Bonham is!

engst | 9/5/2007, 1:03 am EST

Great idea…but, no. Please no. I worship Zeppelin, but have no desire to see this happen. There are few things in music that should be left untouched, this is one. I, like everyone else, wish Bonzo didn’t die. But he did. Leave it at that. They certainly shouldn’t need the money. I don’t care if Jason Bonham or Dave Grohl drums…although it would be sweet. I’m praying for this not to happen… and I know there are people out there who hate me for saying this. If they were true fans, they’d see the beauty in leaving the legend as it is….

No doubt led zeppelin would rake in insanley large amounts of cash but i believe they wont do it, they stoped in their prime knowing they would never be the same without bonham and it should stay that way…its kind of like the beatles and when they broke up people bitched but when they did they were on the top of the world and thats how they will be remembered as a group

ROBERT PLANT CONFIRMS LED ZEPPELIN REUNION SHOW!
September 5th, 2007 by Vince Neilstein
NME.com reports Robert Plant has confirmed that a rumored Led Zeppelin reunion show is indeed happening this fall. A fan who met Plant in London today contacted NME.COM explaining that the singer said he was on his way to meet bandmates Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones.

“How did you find out about this?” asked Plant when asked about the prospects of a reunion show by the autograph hunter. “Well we’ve got a band meeting about it this afternoon about it. There’s not a lot to work out as it’s only going to be one-off gig.”

NME.com also reports that according to “a music industry source” the show will be a charity gig organised by promoter Harvey Goldsmith and it will possibly take place in November at the 02 in London.

The article does NOT mention who might play drums for the show, but it can only be assumed that it will be the late John Bonham’s son Jason who played with Page, Plant and Jones at the “Reunion” gig in 1989, and has since played with countless other classic rock bands with deceased or departed drummers.

Power, mystic, bombastic presentation, soaring solos & Vocals. Rock Gods. Leave that all in tack. Preserve the purity of one of rocks all time great acts, like the Beatles, Hendrix or the Clash. A band musical history that is near perfect as any band, the fans left wanting more, and the band leaving on top. They would not deliver, other than the name. If must tour, keep the Band name untarnished, Tour as Jonesin’ for Planted Page. Not Zep.

Okay, is this for real this time or is just a bunch of BS like the last time? Would love to Led Zeppelin do a reunion tour, but if you’re not gonna do it. quit wasting our time with stupid rumors.

hhhmmmmm... | 9/5/2007, 5:35 pm EST

Is that why the brits call Plant percy?????

Deeelicious | 9/5/2007, 5:51 pm EST

Well, I don’t think it’s likely Page, Plant, Jones, or John Bonham’s estate need the money. The possible one-off charity gig Chaz Reinhold mentions, however, may have the side benefit of letting the band gauge its potency and enthusiasm for something more, without regard for the money, just for the fun of it.

I like the idea of Jason Bonham taking over for his father in the family business — if it feels right for everyone. Based on the performances I’ve seen with other bands, Jason certainly is a very capable drummer. Moreover, he may be the only one who can really bring enough of the old chemistry back to make a reunion worthwhile. I’d definitely buy a ticket just to see what the old Zeps cook up.

As someone that’s seen the Who over the last year, these things can work. Their secret weapon I believe is none other than Ringo Starr’s son, Zak Starkey, on drums. He’s far and away the best drummer they’ve had for their kind of music since Keith Moon. Moreover, Pete Townshend certainly seems to have his chops in good form, and Roger Daltrey holds his own just fine — and wisely doesn’t risk blowing out his voice trying to hit every high note he did as a younger man.

Speaking of Daltrey, sure Plant doesn’t wail like a banshee as he did back in the 1970s. But, again, I’d rather have him able to still sing well in a lower register than blow out his voice entirely.

As to Page, like I say about Townshend, I don’t know of any reason why he can’t get his chops in shape just like any guitarist does after a period of downtime.

No worries about Jones, who seems always to rise to the occasion, whether performing or producing.

I know some people wonder why these old geezers don’t just hang it up. Well, what if they still love doing it? If people still want to pay to see these musicians doing what they’d do anyway if nobody cared, what’s the problem?

theshadowboxer | 9/5/2007, 6:13 pm EST

I would love to see Page, Plant and Jones on stage and on tour. It should have been the three of them back in the 90’s when they went on tour last time (Page and Plant).

sgtpepper | 9/5/2007, 8:52 pm EST

I don’t think a renuion tour would be all that great of an idea. As much as I do love Led Zeppelin, a part of their appeal in the 70’s had to do with their badA attitudes and sexually fueled stage presence, not to mention Robert Plant’s earsplitting vocals and john bonham’s virtuoso drumming. Unless I am mistaking, all of those key parts of Led Zeppelin would be missing (I don’t think Plants vocals are quite the same anymore). We’d still hear Page ripping it up, but that is not enough of a reason for us to pay big bucks for a Zeppelin concert. I think Led Zeppelin knows that this is true and that’s why they’re shying away from a reunion.

We need to stop digging up the graves of all these dead bands and move into the new. Led, Van, and all the rest of ‘em. They had their day but that day has long passed, decades ago actually. I think the problem is there are so few real bands out there now that there is nothing for music-heads to dig. So we look to the past. It’s a terrible time to be young.

For all of you arguing that there should be no Zeppelin reunion because Page is now a sloppy guitarist or that Plant can’t hit the notes anymore, have you ever listened to any bootlegs from when they were still together? I have about 15 bootlegs, and Page is sloppy and Plant misses a ton of notes (not to mention butchering a bunch of lyrics) on almost all of them. It doesn’t matter – they were never about being “perfect” on stage. They just played. If you want to listen to a band play live and have it sound exactly like the recording, what’s the point?

By the way, I saw Page/Plant in Pittsburgh in 1998, and it was awesome. It would be this time too. And for those of you who don’t want to see it, don’t go. Those of us that do will.

Dave D Star | 9/8/2007, 3:46 am EST

Interesting lot of u sayin it can never happen without Jon B. Did REM die when Bill Berry quit? No. OK, he was an integral part of the band but drummers can be replaced, vocalists, and possibly lead guitarists cant. (REM without Stipe? I dont think so) And then there was Keith Moon… For the record, I am a Zep freak, saw them lots in the 70s, got just about everything they ever did, but i think a reunion will be a mistake. Page or Plant havent intrested me one iota in the past 20 years, but Zep still rule.

war-we-livin-war-no-peace-why? | 9/8/2007, 7:48 am EST

ROBERT PLANT INDULDGES IN THE INTREGES OF ALISON`S VOICE BECAUSE EVEN IF HONEY`S NOT BLACK WELL she`s delicate, THE HOOK-UP MAKES 4 THE COVETED TROPHY—SICK–VAIN–USELESS– WASTE-OF INDULGENCE–PEACE ON EARTH IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN AS A RESULT OF THIS FOOLISH WASTE OF TIME&$$$ -union of bs, fools to buy this one!!

Idiots | 9/8/2007, 11:46 pm EST

Can’t believe the negativity over a bloody rumor. If you don’t like Page/Plant, don’t go to the fucking show, but for Chrissakes stop crying about how ‘bad’ they are and how much money they don’t need. If they wanna perform together, so what? Personally, I’d be one of the first in line for it, but you all go ahead and cry over the break-up of Asia and/or Manofwar. If you wish hard enough…hey…you never know.

Ken | 9/9/2007, 2:37 am EST

I sincerely hope this turns into a touring situation. I just hope Page and Plant can keep up with John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham. Page in recent decades has delivered borderline guitar work and Plant is not the singer he was. Yet, Jason is a very good drummer, not like his father, but good. As for John Paul Jones, he is still THE living rock-n-roll bass player. Paul McCartney started a new way of playing bass in a rock band, then John Entwhistle of The Who perfected it and Jones was hot on his heels. Paul is still great, and John dead, leaving Jonesy to carry the mantle. If this is for real, Page and Plant better start getting their chops up, because they would still have a deadly rhythm section to keep up with. I hope it’s real…Jones deserves it after being left out of previous efforts.

fourstiX | 9/9/2007, 3:18 am EST

so be it, they are reuniting. they are getting on, but hey, they’ll probably pull it off just fine. saw page & plant & that was good enuff for me. the reunion show will be a good Xperience for anyone who has not been to a led zep or page/plant concert.

Miramichi | 9/9/2007, 9:33 am EST

This is more than just a rumor folks. Check Harvey Goldsmith’s blog next week. Check Billboard’s web site. Check Yahoo’s web site.

A press release is scheduled to go out next Wednesday. It is now a virtual certainty that Led Zeppelin will be doing a show with Jason Bonham on drums. Everyone who’s got any connections at all is aware of this.

miccc | 9/9/2007, 12:22 pm EST

This is arguably rocks greatest band, having sold over 100-million records in the U.S. alone, with a colossal and dedicated worldwide fan base, and yet very typically for R.S. Magazine, they report this as though it’s a possible REO Speedwagon or Bread reunion. If this happens it will be interesting to watch the RS coverage.

miccc | 9/9/2007, 12:34 pm EST

Also: Sadly, the second John Bonham died, Led Zeppelin ceased to exist. Bonham was crucial to the magical Zeppelin chemistry and power, and thus utterly irreplaceable. Page, Plant, and Jones understood this very well and had the grace and dicipline to bring down the curtain on the greatest rock band ever.

which is the most intuitive, psychic, and sensitive sign of them all? look it up.

Rick | 9/13/2007, 12:41 pm EST

I have seen the representing symbols or signs of John Paul Jones and John Bonham as 3 in one Holy Trinity examples as well.
If this concert is successful and a big enough buzz occurs, I am sure there will be a U.S. & World tour…
Bonham plays Bonham well, just like Zappa plays Zappa well.

barracuda | 9/14/2007, 3:55 am EST

a very brief overview of the 4 symbols:

Jimmy Page: Zoso (Saturn, magic)
John Paul Jones: 3 intersecting circles (Pisces)
John Bonham: 3 interlocking rings (mother, father, child)
Robert Plant: feather of the Egyptian goddess

Gaby NYC | 9/25/2007, 2:29 pm EST

Led Zeppelin is the best band ever!!! All of your negative comments are truly disgusting…I would pay any amount to see all of the original members with Jason Bonham get on stage and play all of the songs we want to hear. I just hope they come to NYC because we will roll out the red carpet!!!
