8/31/07, 1:56 pm EST

In honor of Labor Day, and the fact that Rock Daily will be taking Monday off (we know you’ll miss us), we’re devoting this weekend’s rock list to songs about the daily grind. Here are five of our favorite job-related jams to get you started:

  • “9 to 5,” Dolly Parton
  • “Working for the Weekend,” Loverboy
  • “Bright Future In Sales,” Fountains of Wayne
  • “Working Class Hero,” John Lennon
  • “Workin for a Livin,” Huey Lewis and the News

Superpowers Enable Me to Blend in With Machinery by Dillinger Four, for sure. For those of you who think punk rock lacks poetry, here are the lyrics:

IT’S ALL WRINKLED ELBOW SHIRTS AND POKER FACES ON THIS BUS
BACK TO A NOTCH DUG JUST LIKE A DITCH IN THE CITY’S WEATHERED CRUST
BUT THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THE CITY’S GRAY
THAT SEEMS TO SAY ALL THERE IS TO SAY
RIDDLED WITH REGIMENT, VINDICTIVE INTENT
FAKING LOYALTY AND GETTING PAID
FUCK THEM ALL
SHE KEEPS THE VARIETY SECTION AND SHE GIVES THE REST TO ME
SHE SAYS SHE REMEMBERS WHEN BUSES WHERE NICER
“THERE’S NO DIGNITY IN PLASTIC SEATS”
BUT THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THE WAY SHE SAID
“THE ONLY GOOD BOSS IS ONE THAT’S DEAD”
THESE BROAD SHOULDERS GIGGLED ALL OVER THE BUS
AND WORK ETHIC CRUMBLED INTO “THEM AND US”
FUCK THEM ALL
AND ALL THESE SPECTERS OF THE WORK PLACE
TURNED FROM EFFIGY BACK TO REALITY
AND YEAH I WISH IT WAS THAT SIMPLE
TO THINK A BELLY LAUGH IS REALLY ALL WE NEED
BUT IT’S THE SLOW DECAY FROM THE DAY TO DAY
THAT SAYS TAKE YOUR PAY CHECK, ACCEPT YOUR PLACE
AND FADE AWAY
BUT THERE WAS DIGNITY IN PLASTIC SEATS THAT DAY.

idle hands are the devil’s playground, work- work-”.
And then just before the bridge, the singer yells “coffee break”, and the band goes into a mellow vamp for 12 bars.

I’m kicking myself for forgetting “Slave To The Grind” by Skid Row.

I can’t believe nobody got behind Roy Orbison’s “Working For The Man”.

“Sixteen Tons” and any Bruce Springsteen songs deserve to be on the list.

I just got the new Rilo Kiley album. “The Moneymaker” should be on the list next the topic comes up.

Benjamin | 9/9/2007, 10:01 am EST

Surely “Working class man” by Jimmy Barnes should make the list.
