Kanye West Unveils “Graduation,” Badmouths All-Star Hip-Hop Jams

8/29/07, 2:02 am EST

Kanye West

Last night Kanye West officially previewed his new album, the excellent Graduation, to a lively, packed house at a midtown Manhattan movie theater across the street from his record label’s offices. As usual, Kanye came close to overshadowing his own music: He talked to the crowd at length after the album played, asserting that Graduation is one of the “top ten” hip-hop albums ever and that he’s one of the “top five MCs” of all time. When asked what it felt like to be onstage with Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Diddy and T.I. at New York’s Screamfest concert last week, Kanye said “it would have felt better to hit the stage with me and Jay like we planned.” He also fed the fire for his September 11th record-sales showdown with 50 Cent — 50’s Curtis comes out the same day as Graduation — claiming that his presales were higher than 50’s and that he “had to build it up for Rolling Stone.” (Thanks, chief!) West also talked about how one of the new album’s songs, the lovely “I Wonder,” was inspired by the U2 track “City of Blinding Lights”: After seeing Bono and crew perform “Lights” to rapturous crowds when he was opening for them, Kanye told himself, “I want one of those.”

ok..more selfishness and “oh, I’m just so great” bravado from hip-hop. Could he possibly stop talking about himself?!?

qwertyuio | 8/29/2007, 9:07 am EST

the guy is talented, but i’m so tired of the stupid bravado. i refuse to buy his fucking record because of it. i just can’t stand supporting that bullshit anymore. nobody’s that good.

DUDEYO | 8/29/2007, 10:35 am EST

dude talent no way he is more like the bottom 5 MC’s of no time for you. I wish he would feud with 50
cent and 50 would smoke his punk bitch ass. Peace out.

dickhead | 8/29/2007, 10:49 am EST

NO Talent bullshit
rapping over a tape loop is crap
note RAP is short for CRAP

bukowski | 8/29/2007, 10:57 am EST

Bill Bellamy sucks

and thats that | 8/29/2007, 11:02 am EST

Kanye is so damn good he earns his right to be so arrogant

jaoman1 | 8/29/2007, 11:10 am EST

Don’t hate his confidence. It’s great he feels that way, everyone should. That being said, there is no way one of the greatest rap records could ever kick off with that crappy made for teen radio single. Popular yes (harmless also), but no where close to one of the best ever……

HIGHTOPFADE | 8/29/2007, 11:26 am EST

“Made for teen radio” single? Last I checked, any song featuring Justin Timberlake (i.e. 50’s Ayo Technology)is the epidemy of “made for teen radio”. Maybe for 50’s next single, he can have Hillary Duff sing the chorus.

poozo | 8/29/2007, 11:39 am EST

kanye has the right to be arrogant!
hes fresh and new, brings a whole new dimension to hip hop!

bukowski | 8/29/2007, 12:00 pm EST

No, he should be humble. Not too many people are given the opportunity to have a life like his. There are many starving musicians that are just as good or better, but will never get the break the he got.

jaoman1 | 8/29/2007, 12:26 pm EST

high-top, this isn’t about kayne/50. that wasn’t what this post was about. But, since you turned it into that, here you go…….Kayne never made and will never make a Get Rich/Die Tryin’. Kayne is an alternative rapper. He’s much more Gnarles Barkley than TuPac, which will never translate into one of the greatest rap albums ever……my only musical point with Kayne and the previous post

Rock | 8/29/2007, 1:52 pm EST

Kanye’s great. Rappers are all about shameless self-promotion, so I don’t isolate him from the rest. At least he is really talented and doesn’t feel confined to a “ghetto/thug/gangzta” image. How many other rappers are there who can name a U2 song, much less cite them as inspiration. Enjoy his music because it’s refreshing in an era of general garbage and forgive him for the arrogance; the Stones used to bill themselves as “The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World” back when The Beatles were still together and The Who and Zeppelin were at the top of their game (although their claim is a little closer to the truth than Kanye’s).

It seems whenever Kanye doesn’t win a grammy, he ends up wanting to work with the winner. He lost to Maroon 5 for best new artist a few years back and wound up working with them. Reportedly he didn’t look happy at the time when he didn’t win. I’m pretty sure his ranting and raving is all an act. He does that because he knows that people want to see it.

Howie | 8/30/2007, 11:27 am EST

I wonder if the album is gonna show sample credits for German Krautrock band “Can”. Kanye’s “Drunk And Hot Girls” is a full allmost cover version of Can’s “Sing Swan Song”. Cool ‘gold digger’, Kanye!

pharaoh | 8/31/2007, 8:27 am EST

kanye can big himself up cause he’s damn fly. He is not a top 5 MC, but this will be one of the years best albums, with superior production (and yes, rapping) to Curtis. He IS a contender for top 5 producer, and a good MC, and that’s why his shit is fly. ROC

me live wit it | 9/3/2007, 1:45 am EST

He is good no doubt, but this I’m better than you shit has got to stop, sing and produce your best effort and let it be.
If it is the best people will acknowledge it !

This arrogance is like the religious beliefs today my god is the real god and yours is not so your going to hell or should die mentality in this world today !!!!

Do your best and let the chips fall where they may ,

matter_of_fact | 9/4/2007, 12:46 am EST

I for one appreciate Kanye’s boastfulness. It makes him hungry to be the best… the sad thing about it is that most other rap artist have not fallen in line. You only see this type of hunger from the underground. While every other rapper is settling for the best dance step song of the moment, Kanye sells and speaks what he feels. That’s why there is no comparison to record sales between him and other hip pop artist. You buy the record because you want to here him brag, you want him to be outlandish. Remember Eminem? Its the same reason you bought his records too!
