Yesterday, while Rock Daily was parsing rumors about Britney Spears’ now-almost-certain major comeback performance at September 9th’s MTV Video Music Awards, the star’s legal team, as well as lawyers for her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, were in a Los Angeles courtroom that handles child-abuse claims. While the proceedings were confidential, the appearance suggests that one or both members of the former couple are under investigation for risking the welfare of their children, Sean Preston, almost two, and Jayden James, nearly one. Since the pair are currently engaged in a custody battle, many observers assume Federline and his attorney initiated the investigation; claims that Spears has neglected her kids’ sleeping and eating habits, particularly their dental hygiene, recently emerged in legal papers filed by K-Fed’s reps. (Maybe there was some truth to those stories about Spears asking a dentist to cosmetically whiten Sean Preston’s little teeth?)
The Spears/Federline duo hasn’t exactly been a stranger to Los Angeles’ Department of Children and Family Services: Remember “the car seat incident” and “the high chair fall”? As far as we know, nobody officially investigated Spears’ “whoops, almost dropped Sean P!” moment in New York, and the cavalcade of panty-less partying, hair-shaving, rehab-going and drunken hooking-up that followed. Both sides will be back in court September 4th for a follow-up hearing, just five days before the VMAs. Spears better hope US Weekly isn’t admissible evidence …
Meanwhile, there is some good news for Spears — she’s been cleared of at least one abuse charge: The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has dropped its investigation into her treatment of her puppy. Suspicions of abuse were raised when the puppy broke its leg, but apparently Britney made sure the dog saw a vet, who then confirmed the dog’s mild fracture had been treated.
