Goo Goo Doll John Rzeznik, Sheila E. Will Judge the Merits of “The Next Great American Band”

8/27/07, 12:10 pm EST

Yesterday, the puppet masters behind the American Idol empire confirmed that in order to be a judge on any of their shows — including their latest attempt to take over the music industry, The Next Great American Band — your résumé had to have started to get a little moldy circa 1999. Congratulations go to Goo Goo Dolls’ frontman John (no more Johnny) Rzeznik, Sheila E. and Ian “Dicko” Dickson (yes, “Dicko,” of Australian Idol fame). The trio will join the ranks of David Hasslehoff and Paula Abdul and serve as judges on the show, which will debut October 19th on Fox. The Ryan Seacrest? New Zealand Idol’s Dominic Bowden (guess these shows really like to keep folks with accents around to confer credibility). Sheila E.’s last hit album came out in 1985, but she famously joined Prince on his Sign O’ the Times tour in 1987. The Goo Goo Dolls had a single chart from their 2002 LP Gutterflower, but their last real smash was of course “Iris,” which helped 1998’s Dizzy Up the Girl go multtiple platinum. But the Idol production team has proven they’re just as adept at resuscitating older careers as they are at launching new ones.

What we need, one more completely vacant and useless reality TV show. Doesn’t any one write a script anymore, hire actors and directors?

Hopefully this show will be cancelled immediately, or never see the light of day.

I have actually watched this show. No, not on a regular basis, as I do not always have an opportunity to watch television every night. I look forward to seeing John and the comments that he makes regarding the new talent. There are many bands that many of you may not have heard, but you have to keep an open mind. Listening to music is my favorite past time. Give it a chance, watch it, form your own opinions. Some of the best music I listen to is music that many have never heard of. I love turning people on to good music that they probably would never get hear and enjoy. I do not think John is bored by no means, it is just an opportunity to critique new musicians and the talent that they may have. This will benefit these new musicians. John in my opinion, is creative, definitely a thinker, has an ear for music and may have a lot to offer them. Personally I would love to be involved in such a process. I love exploring new talented musicians. How many of you have even watched this show?

Stop with the obsessing over John. You are giving fans a bad name.

Why are the “artistes” so hard on John Rzeznik?????!!!!! Is it the old steroetype that if you are amazingly attractive you cannot possibly be smart/talented etc. too? Give me a break-he obviously doesn’t need the money, so his motives for doing this new show
COULD BE genuine. The powers that
be at Rolling Stone must not be up-to-date on CD and concert sales if they think his last hit was in 1999
I for one am looking forward to his
appearances and input. He is truly
talented and charismatic!

Thank goodness the show isn’t “The Next American Politician,” because John Rzeznik’s political savvy bites. However, he does know his way around a guitar chord and a lyric, so he’s credible, and I’ll watch. I hate to admit it (because he is a party line thumpin’ lefty) but this man is delicious eye candy.

As far as Sheila E. goes, she is still one of the coolest percussionst out there! Some of these young’ens need to take heed!

People, John Rzeznik is probably the most brilliant frontman in the world! And that person was right! What about all goo goo dolls other hits? Name, slide, dizzy etc!
