Um…This is like the third or fourth book to come out on vintage rock tees. it’s cool, but its hardly the last word - or the first word - on the subject. still no original ny dolls.

SJRuby | 8/27/2007, 10:18 am EST
The They Might Be Giants “Extra Crispy” Tour t-shirt from the early nineties with a dead cockroach on it and the logo THEY MIGHT BE DEAD over it will always be my favorite. Horrifyingly, 15 years later, I still wear mine every so often.
Tacobellgrindage | 8/27/2007, 9:42 am EST
I still dig my Tee from the “Vote for Change” tour when I saw Pearl Jam in Asheville, N.C. a few years back.
Failure | 8/27/2007, 9:03 am EST
Uh, anything with the NIN logo on it. That is one of the most recognizable logos from the 90’s.

Where is the Pearl Jam shirt that says nine out of ten children prefer crayons to guns? And where is any Rolling Stones shirt featuring Andy Warhol’s lips?
meglovesrs | 8/26/2007, 9:36 am EST
it’s a shame to know that a lot of these shirts are being recreated and sold at Wal-marts and Targets. It almost makes the badge of honor seem less honorable.
I personally have a Ben Folds tour shirt from this year’s tour with John Mayer. It illustrates Fold’s awesomely immature personality, which i find endearing.
hippieboy | 8/26/2007, 12:22 am EST
I like todd snider’s shirt =
tree hugging, pot smoking, porn watching, lazy arse hippie
Hestir | 8/26/2007, 12:18 am EST
I used to have a shirt from ShaneMag that read on the front “I might fave f—ed you missus” and on the back, “but I never f—ed
your daughter”, but that was a little hard to wear to the cpa picnic

The most iconic is the Rolling Stones 1973 logo shirt for sure (The lips and tongue). I have also seen pictures of Marc Bolan wearing a Chuck Berry shirt that I wish I could find, although they might not make them anymore.
Mark Sachs | 8/25/2007, 8:32 pm EST
Concert tee shirts are great. However, can anyone who goes to a lot of concerts afford $35.00 for a tee shirt??? Especially of you are one of those folks who buys a shirt everytime you go!
Van Halen had some classic shirts!
Electric Warrior | 8/25/2007, 8:09 pm EST
T.Rex - The Slider t-shirt…Marc Bolan in his top hat…photo credited to Ringo Starr (but actually taken by Tony Visconti)…frequently worn by Iggy Pop, which in itself is a true testament of the t-shirt since Iggy is rarely seen wearing any shirt!
Ha | 8/25/2007, 2:57 pm EST
Wow. It must have killed you guys to NOT include a Timberlake or Snoop Dogg T.
ryan | 8/25/2007, 12:00 pm EST
are you guys kidding me, why has no one suggested THE GRATEFUL DEAD
Flaming H0m0 | 8/25/2007, 11:05 am EST
How about the Barbara Streisand t-shirt with her big nosed smiling face. That’s a keeper.
Steve522 | 8/25/2007, 10:05 am EST
Where is the Pearl Jam stickman shirt?
my spacedotcom /goddamn idiot | 8/25/2007, 3:29 am EST
Iconic Rock Shirts:
As stated, any Metallica shirt designed by Pushead, specifically Damage Inc, damaged Justice, One, and the Sad But True T-shirts. The Led Zeppelin Swan Song T-Shirt. Any Iron Maiden T-Shirt from before 1990. The Nirvana Smiley Face T-shirt.
tim | 8/25/2007, 2:03 am EST
Appetite For Destruction cross t shirt
Jakobi | 8/25/2007, 1:39 am EST
That Ramones t-shirt rules. But seriously, how sick am I of seeing them now!!!
Edge | 8/24/2007, 8:55 pm EST
Anonymous,
Are you implying that artists and designers are idiots?
Anonymous | 8/24/2007, 8:47 pm EST
Why would you include a Metallica shirt with the band? When I think rock t-shirts, I think of a Metallica Pushead t-shirt.
Anonymous | 8/24/2007, 8:43 pm EST
Candy-o you’re an idiot. How can t-shirts be collector’s items or inspirations. Maybe for the designers.
Anonymous | 8/24/2007, 8:31 pm EST
Anything can represent experiences and why should it being a collectors’ item make them any different? And I guess I also fail to see how a shirt can be be a symbol of inspiration.
Anonymous | 8/24/2007, 8:26 pm EST
Great choices, but you forgot some good ones, like the Smashing Pumpkins “Zero” shirt, and Nirvana’s smiley face t-shirt
Rosie | 8/24/2007, 7:40 pm EST
I actually have the book and what I like that it covers 50years ot tshirt design. Starts with Elvis and ends with YYYs. I don’t think the book claims that the YYYs are in the same catergory as the more iconic tees but its cool to see contemporary designs in there too.
Josh | 8/24/2007, 7:15 pm EST
Got the book last week. Awesome that someone has finally put together the best tees in music history. Amazed no one’s done it before.
Bob | 8/24/2007, 6:51 pm EST
Stones ‘72 US Tour Shirt. that and the Ramones logo. but personally Dinosaur Jr’s Cow T-shirt is my favourite
Baked Chocodile | 8/24/2007, 6:30 pm EST
Good point about the YYY’s (and I’m actually quite a big fan of their music); however, the passing of time doesn’t automatically grant iconic status either. Mudhoney? Yeah I realize they were considered one of the beginning grunge acts but they certainly aren’t iconic.
And Dinasour Jr., Happy Mondays and Minor Threat aren’t exactly the pillars of rock ‘n roll either.
AZ | 8/24/2007, 6:15 pm EST
The Clash’s Straight to Hell was a great one. Stone Roses had a nice one with John Squire’s Jackson Pollock-like paint job. Stones’ Japan Tour from ‘81-82 with the dragon?
Andy | 8/24/2007, 5:12 pm EST
Yeah Yeah Yeahs??? No matter how much you guys push them, you can’t FORCE anything into “iconic” status…
candy-o | 8/24/2007, 4:40 pm EST
Anonymous, only you can answer that question for yourself. Those T-Shirts represent experiences and inspirations…and some of them are collectors’ items.
billy | 8/24/2007, 4:37 pm EST
rolling stones’ 1989 notrh american tour tshirt
epic
Anonymous | 8/24/2007, 4:24 pm EST
Am I supposed to be impressed with those?
Eman | 8/24/2007, 3:55 pm EST
Link to the gallery is busted, yo!
candy-o | 8/24/2007, 3:48 pm EST
How cool is that for the designers…it’s nice to see them being given the credit they deserve.
