Deluxe Dylan: Tracklists Emerge For Career-Spanning Anthology

8/24/07, 1:08 pm EST

The official tracklisting has been confirmed for Dylan, the three-disc anthology spanning Bob Dylan’s lengthy career that’s due in stores October 2nd. Fans were already aware that the collection will be available in two three-album versions and one single-disc set; now Billboard has the word on what they’ll get. The three-disc compilations will feature fifty songs arranged in chronological order, beginning with 1962’s “Song to Woody” and ending with “When the Deal Goes Down” from last year’s Modern Times. Mark Ronson’s remix of “Most Likely You’ll Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine)” will only be available via iTunes starting September 18th, and won’t appear on any of the discs.

The track list was partially determined by fan votes on an interactive Web page; the site will also provide a place to discuss Dylan’s music and participate in an online photo exhibit featuring images inspired by Dylan’s work. Keep reading to check out the full tracklists.

what about Buckets of Rain? Why does that song get no love. Only a pawn in their Game? seriously people.

Dan | 9/2/2007, 1:47 pm EST

Sluggo… YOU SUCK!
Why don’t you try listening? In fact… don’t…
You don’t deserve it.

SLUGGO | 9/1/2007, 6:14 pm EST

Dylan sucks. He sounds like Buckwheat on the little rascals.

Tawfiq Farraj | 8/29/2007, 1:23 am EST

I think its pretty crappy track list. I really dont think fans would believe in this or Its alright ma i’m only bleeding would be on list. Plus some more bootleg. I am sorry to have only one song from highway 61 revisited and john wesley harding is pretty damn suprising. I am quite dissapointed with this list.

bob dylan | 8/28/2007, 11:56 pm EST

just download all of them

Slipstream Fighter | 8/28/2007, 12:09 pm EST

Ho hum.

“Mark Ronson’s remix of “Most Likely You’ll Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine)” will only be available via iTunes starting September 18th, and won’t appear on any of the discs.”

That’s good news–it doesn’t belong anywhere near Dylan’s song catalog.

This new compilation is just an expansion of the ones that came before. Seems this is for those who haven’t bought all of D’s albums and like only particular songs of the different eras.

How about a DVD compilation of all of D’s videos?

mike | 8/28/2007, 3:47 am EST

disappointing compilation… only one song from Highway 61 Revisited?! His legendary 65/66 time could be represented more tasty and special. Biograph is what compilations should be all about…it’s a pity, it could have been interesting but…

Wolf | 8/27/2007, 9:47 pm EST

Where is the song about George Jackson? How about something from your collaboration(s) with Allen Ginsberg? You don’t have to prove anything to me. But a “constitutional replay of mass production”(to quote you) does not inspire my wallet.

Wolf | 8/27/2007, 9:43 pm EST

Nothing new here Bob, I am dissapointed.

Gary | 8/27/2007, 6:38 pm EST

Why no Gospel song(s) on the single disc? “Gotta Serve Somebody” was A. a hit and B. a grammy-winning song.

sameoldsameold | 8/27/2007, 5:45 pm EST

Chimes of Freedom
When The Ship Comes In
Spanish Harlem Incident
Mississippi
I Don’t Believe You
I Believe In You
Watching the River Flow
When I Paint My Masterpiece
Make You Feel My Love
???????????????????????

Luckily I have all these on offical releases and dozens of
boots. When will Columbia figure
out what Dylan’s audience, who
basically already has everything
but the outtakes, release something we don’t all already
have? I’m not buying this blob.

Yenrac Rants | 8/27/2007, 5:15 pm EST

What’s the point? Like everyone else has already said, there are already better comps out there (Dylan GH 1, 2, and 3, Essential Bob Dylan, etc).

He’s got better bootleg recordings already out there than what this provides….

For the novice, buy the essential bob dylan, and then supplement it with “Blonde on Blonde”, Bootleg Series volume 1-3 (actually one of his best albums) and add “Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” and you’ve got enough to at least say you’ve got a decent Dylan compilation.

I think Dylan’s got plenty of great stuff, but overall I think his albums tend to be overrated besides Freewheelin and Blonde on Blonde which are about as perfect as albums can be. I own the majority of his 60s output and am less impressed with the post Nashville Skyline era (and really disappointed with Blood on the tracks, whcih I’ve actually bought twice in two different periods of my life–once at 18 and again last yr at 28) and still think it’s overrated…..

Overall he’s a great artist, fantastic songwriter, but not in the same caliber to me as a John Lennon, Ray Davies, or Harry Nilsson….but then again that’s just me. I would hardly deny a need for a fantastic Dylan anthology, I just think this one’s mediocre at best. He’s one of the most important artists ever, just I think a little less important than his rep (and despite what anyone says I think he’s TERRIBLE live at least the 2 times I’ve seen him (Oct 31, 2002 I believe at the Northwestern BBAll gym and again in 2005 at the Schaumber Flyers bball field. I gave him a second chance after I felt the first time I saw him I was too excited about seeing him, and I thought the second time I saw him coming in with much less expectations I was even more disapointed especially after Willie Nelson was a million times better than Dylan, and prior to that show I wasn’t familiar with Willie Nelson at all and I was and still am more of a Dylan album fan….

Donovan Holden | 8/27/2007, 3:26 pm EST

this is a really lousy compilation of an artist
that’s already overly compiled–
get the original issues
do the work
in this case
it’s worth it!

QUIT WASTING ALL OF US TRUE DYLAN FANS TIME. WE ARE SICK OF THE BULLSHIT. GIVE US SOMETHING REAL.

Dylan Fan | 8/26/2007, 11:00 pm EST

Notable omissions-

SHE BELONGS TO ME
LOVE MINUS ZERO/NO LIMIT
JUST LIKE TOM THUMBS BLUES
STUCK INSIDE OF MOBILE (WITH THE MEMPHIS BLUES AGAIN)
MAN IN ME
IDIOT WIND
LOVE SICK
DIAMOND JOE
THUNDER ON THE MOUNTAIN

……ultimately, the point being, this collection (as had already been reported) is grossly incomplete and extremely conservative.

evanspw | 8/26/2007, 9:26 pm EST

“The lonesome death of Hattie Carrol” is his best song. There are many great songs, but “Hattie Carrol” is utterly brilliant.

Tricky Dick | 8/26/2007, 6:05 pm EST

Fuck Dylan…where’s the 3-disc Justin Timberlake compilation?

Dan | 8/26/2007, 2:06 pm EST

There’s already Greatest Hits Vol. 1, 2, 3, Best of, The Essential, and Biograph. The people who like Dylan enough to spend $50 bucks on a 3 disc set already have all these songs. A good box set mixes classics with unreleased material, alternate takes, outtakes, and live cuts. (The Who-Maximum R&B is a good example). 51 studio tracks that are already available on at least 6 compilations already seems to be redundant.

mayflower23 | 8/26/2007, 11:15 am EST

Fan of Kanye West and Bo Dylan… love to see a collab…. seriously.

jurgen | 8/26/2007, 9:25 am EST

Columbia should release a live album with recent material from his never ending tour instead of releasing yet another compilation album…

bukowski | 8/26/2007, 3:03 am EST

When did Dylan start looking like Charles Bronson?

Sean | 8/26/2007, 1:52 am EST

No “Idiot Wind” is a felony of some kind.

DOOWEI | 8/26/2007, 1:32 am EST

ONONON

Anonymous | 8/25/2007, 11:07 pm EST

Soooo….they’re re-selling everything everyone’s already heard. Nobody has any shame.

Bob | 8/25/2007, 8:27 pm EST

Perhaps if DYLAN had been something the consumers haven’t heard 1000 times before, consumers might be more excited about it. Dylan’s got enough greatest hits packages. And he’s not an artist who is decently represented by a “best of” anyways.

Part of DYLAN should have been a compilation of Bob’s released tracks never before released on an album, like “George Jackson”, “Rita May”, “People Get Ready”, “Crossing the Green Mountain”, “Waiting For You” and “Things Have Changed”. The rest should have been devoted to unreleased material.

Columbia owes the true Dylan fans BIG. A complete Basement Tapes set, anybody? The undubbed versions, too. No use in presenting a false vision of what went down in the summer of ‘67.

Mitchapalooza | 8/25/2007, 7:16 pm EST

Queen Jane Approximately would’ve been a good choice, or Ballad of a Thin Man. They’re both GREAT songs.

Seamus Donnelly | 8/25/2007, 3:36 pm EST

No Love Sick, what the fuck?

Bradley | 8/25/2007, 2:36 pm EST

I would have liked to have seen “Lay Down Your Weary Tune” on this set. I realize it is on Biograph, but had it been remastered for this new compilation, that would have been a great addition.
But instead of repackaging another compilation, could Columbia PLEASE finish remastering the Dylan albums in hybrid SACD?

eon | 8/25/2007, 11:49 am EST

This 3 disc set was a huge waste for everyone involved in putting it together and waste’s the public’s time with a lame, predictable, conservative track list. COLUMBIA-WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE! No wonder the music industry is in shambles…

poughkeepsie john | 8/25/2007, 9:29 am EST

There’s ALREADY a Dylan anthology out there. It’s called “Biograph” and it’s a whole lot better.

Dracula68 | 8/25/2007, 4:37 am EST

So it boils down to: at 3 discs it’s only going to appeal to people who are already fans. There are already, what, about 4 or 5 “Dylan Greatest Hits” packages out there. Filler, mere filler.

Bob Dylan is an ALBUM artist, not a “batch of career spanning songs” artist. I tell people who want “just enough” Dylan to get B on B, Highway 61 plus one of their choosing from the acoustic and electric period.

auramac | 8/25/2007, 1:11 am EST

Don’t need no anthologies, unless they’re unreleased cuts: got every single album.

JD | 8/25/2007, 12:32 am EST

I think Biograph was a more interesting 3 CD set as it featured tons of unreleased and rare songs. As for hits compilations, I’ll stick to my copy of The Essential Dylan.

jack | 8/25/2007, 12:02 am EST

how bout the ballad of frankie lee and judas priest(John Wesley Harding),Mississippi(Love and theft),Neighborhood Bully(Infidels)

Chris | 8/24/2007, 10:37 pm EST

Where oh where are the following:
“It’s Alright Ma,”
“Visions of Johanna,” (Either the original or the version from the Bootleg Series would suffice!)
“Desolation Row,”
“Lovesick,”
“Farewell Angelina”
“She’s Your Lover Now”
“Foot of Pride”

These are absolutely essential songs that are required listening for anyone wanting to understand Dylan’s greatness. This new set is just another set containing too many obvious songs (granted, they’re great, but still) you can hear on other compilations. Hey Columbia, stop fucking around and give people an unusual set instead of playing it safe. The man is a legend for a reason!

fugazi48 | 8/24/2007, 9:55 pm EST

Interesting set, but very redundant with GH1 GHII, and GHIII. Perhaps Bob rerecorded all of these songs with Charlie and Larry. Then I would pick this up at midnight.

GIL | 8/24/2007, 8:37 pm EST

THE TRACKLISTING IS TOO CONSERVATIVE.

perfectomix | 8/24/2007, 6:55 pm EST

I suppose it’s a good introduction for people who wanna skip the single-disc compilations and dive headfirst into Dylan’s whole career (without buying individual albums, of course). Other than that, it seems fairly useless, since there’s nothing rare or unreleased here. And personally, I’m getting tired of Dylan comps that 1) ignore the other 10 songs off Highway 61 Revisited, and 2) waste space with Jokerman and Silvio.

And where the hell is Summer Days?!

Gaz | 8/24/2007, 6:08 pm EST

Granted, there’s a lot of ground to cover but 1 track from Highway 61, 3 from Blonde on Blonde & 2 from Blood of the Tracks seems a bit off kilter.

c'mon | 8/24/2007, 5:03 pm EST

man, there deserves to be more from John Wesley Harding on the three disc set.

Quiller | 8/24/2007, 4:27 pm EST

Where’s Dylan’s cover of Kanye’s ‘Touch the Sky’ on this list?!? I demand answers!

Sean | 8/24/2007, 4:22 pm EST

“Gates of Eden”, “Corrina Corrina”, “Moonshiner”, “Farewell, Angelina”. Where are they?

Anonymous | 8/24/2007, 3:47 pm EST

At least Blind Willie McTell is on there.

Tricky Dick | 8/24/2007, 3:28 pm EST

Another fucking Dylan compilation?

But of course RS will beat their meat over it as if we hadn’t heard the previous 50!

Kevin | 8/24/2007, 2:52 pm EST

more bob dylan and less justin timberlake and kanye west would make the world a much better place
very few artist these days have anything to say much less worth listening to

KEVIN | 8/24/2007, 2:50 pm EST

MORE BOB DYLAN AND LESS JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AND KANYE WEST AND THE WORLD WOULD BE A MUCH BETTER PLACE, VERY FEW PEOPLE THESE DAYS HAVE ANYTHING WORTH SAYING

DrJ | 8/24/2007, 2:41 pm EST

So, the record company used an innovative new way to choose the track selection and came up with: an incredibly predictable list of greatest hits. I mean, seriously, there’s not a real surprise in the bunch.

Topher | 8/24/2007, 2:21 pm EST

How about “The Man In Me” off New Morning? And where the hell is “Stuck Inside Of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again?”

Oddjob | 8/24/2007, 2:20 pm EST

The fact that three of Dylan’s best songs, “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues”, “It Takes a Lot to Laugh…” and “Visions of Johanna” aren’t included is a disappointment…

Rachel | 8/24/2007, 2:19 pm EST

“Looking For Bob Dylan”

You might enjoy this video, in addition to this wonderful, and can’t wait to hear, Dylan anthology ;-)

Brett | 8/24/2007, 1:31 pm EST

if not for you is off new morning, ted

Phil | 8/24/2007, 1:29 pm EST

What about “Sweetheart Like You”? it’s a way better song than “Jokerman”. “If Not For You” is off of New Morning. But they should have picked the song “Winterlude”

ted | 8/24/2007, 1:22 pm EST

why never ANYTHING off of “new morning?”
…such an underrated album…

ted | 8/24/2007, 1:21 pm EST

why never ANYTHING
