Exclusive Trailer: The Deerhoof-Soundtracked, Mandy Moore and Billy Crudup-Starring Film “Dedication”

Experimental quirk-pop trio Deerhoof are the last band you’d expect to score a romantic comedy starring Billy Crudup and Mandy Moore. However, Dedication, a Weinstein Company-released Sundance standout that hits theaters in New York and Los Angeles tomorrow is no ordinary Hollywood gush fest. The film was directed by Six Feet Under alum Justin Theroux, who has worked with David Lynch, used to be a roadie for Fugazi, appeared in the video for Muse’s “Hysteria” and judging by Dedication’s soundtrack, knows his music. Last summer, Theroux sent Deerhoof a rough cut of the film, in which he’d used several of their songs; the band ended up scoring the entire film. They even wrote a new track, “Matchbook Seeks Maniac,” for the movie.

The film follows the story of a misogynistic children’s book author (Crudup) who is forced to work with a female illustrator (Moore). According to Theroux, the story unfolds through the eyes of Henry, Crudup’s character, and Deerhoof’s music is meant to underscore the emotional disconnectedness he experiences. “I needed a more eclectic sound that matched [Henry's] disjointed, obsessive personality,” Theroux explains. “It had to be simultaneously unsettling and beautiful, something that is a very rare thing to stumble across. Before we shot a single frame of film, I knew that Deerhoof needed to be a major part of this film. I can’t say enough about their contributions. They are a band that is beyond exceptional.”

Deerhoof drummer and founding member Greg Saunier is equally thrilled about the collaboration. “To me this is a movie a lot of us have been dying to see,” he told Rock Daily. “This is more than just a cute romantic comedy with a ‘quirky offbeat’ lead. Crudup’s character’s troubled and obsessive mindset is there even in the construction of the movie itself, in it’s disjointed shooting and pacing, in its use of music and noise. I hate to admit it, but I look at Dedication and I see myself. I’ve seen this movie a hundred times now and it still brings tears to my eyes. Crudup’s and Moore’s portrayals are just heartbreaking and hilarious and just Justin’s whole vision of it is a thing of beauty. I don’t know what we did to deserve it, but Justin has just always given us his complete trust from day one, everything from script to editing to scoring to the final sound mix, he’s made Deerhoof a part of the process, it’s been an honor and an incomparable thrill.”

The Dedication soundtrack will be released on September 11th and also includes tracks from Cat Power, the Strokes, Fischerspooner and Lightning Bolt. Here’s the tracklist:

1. “Matchbook Seeks Maniac” (Dedication Mix) – Deerhoof
2. “Back Of Your Head” – Cat Power

“Matchbook Seeks Maniac” is NOT a new song written for the movie, it appears on Deerhoof’s last album.
Anyway, the movie looks good. I’ll just try to pretend Moore is someone else…
