Serj Tankian of System of a Down Has a Very Big Question for You

8/22/07, 3:25 pm EST

Rolling Stone was preparing to send a writer to interview Serj Tankian about his new solo album when we got an unusual request from the band’s publicist:

Serj requests that all writers interviewing him provide their thoughts (in any form such as poem, drawing, etc.) on the following: “Define what civilization means to you and what would its ending bring to our world.”

Okay, we’re stumped. What does civilization mean to you, rock fans? The Simpsons? Being able to turn right at red stoplights? We welcome any and all answers to Serj’s question.

Um…Serj said that all “writers” were to provide him with their thoughts on civilization, not “readers.” Do your own work.

Wayne | 8/22/2007, 3:50 pm EST

Hey, RS. Nice AT&T impression.

Brad | 8/22/2007, 3:57 pm EST

It means not having to respond to self indulgent crap like Serj’s question. I don’t see that ending soon.

Dean | 8/22/2007, 3:58 pm EST

I agree with Wayne’s comment. I also want to say that this guy is an idiot. He is trying too hard to be looked upon as a “thinker” or whatever. He’s just trying to get attention.

I’m going to guess that he’s hinting at being against American civilization. Well, if that’s the case, I’ve got news for you pal:

Civilization:
An advanced level of development in society that is marked by complex social and political organization, and material, scientific, and artistic progress.

So, Mr. insightful… if we didn’t have civilization, you wouldn’t be spending your days writing music or whatever else you do. You would be spending time hunting and gathering your own food, looking for shelter, etc. People can hate on the structure of America all they want to, but the fact is, we are free to pursue our dreams in this country. We can be what we really want to be. We can believe what we want to believe.

How many musicians do you see, coming out of third world countries? I haven’t heard of any. They are too busy being what they HAVE to be, due to the government they live under or just their geographical circumstances.

Yeah, there are a lot of laws and sometimes even lies here in America. But ultimately, we are free. FREE!

Cory | 8/22/2007, 4:31 pm EST

Take a breather, Dean. It reads more like an essay question on a 8th Social Studies test rather than a jab at society.

Dean's a douchebag | 8/22/2007, 5:10 pm EST

Civilization=everything we’ve worked for over the years. End of it=this sucks.No a/c.

bukowski | 8/22/2007, 5:51 pm EST

Easy kids, I don’t think what Dean is saying is particularly controversial. It sounds like some of you need to get laid.

Dean's a douchbag | 8/22/2007, 6:50 pm EST

Yeah, not so controversial, but hypocritical. And stay out of my sex life, pervert.

bukowski | 8/22/2007, 7:02 pm EST

Okay, its pretty easy to stay out of something that doesn’t exist. And I am pervert, deal with it!

graham | 8/22/2007, 7:40 pm EST

civilization is taking a crap indoors and the ability to have sex without getting somone pregnant.

sup | 8/22/2007, 8:05 pm EST

Civilization is the ability to live without the daily need to defend oneself against mortal threats.

Anonymous | 8/22/2007, 8:06 pm EST

The end.Hmm…Can we pick pot and psilocybe mushrooms?

Anonymous | 8/22/2007, 9:59 pm EST

This isn’t high times hippie.

Anonymous | 8/22/2007, 10:08 pm EST

Civilization is life without dirty hippies. Please don’t let it end, they smell like shit.

Markus | 8/23/2007, 12:15 am EST

I don’t know which is most absurd: Serj Tankian’s request, Rolling Stone’s gutless “ask the reader” reaction, or some of the responses on this blog thread. I’ve read more intelligent debates on blabbermouth. This whole thing reeks of Spinal Tap.

Markus | 8/23/2007, 12:21 am EST

BTW, where’s skullfreak in all of this? His comments would be the icing on the shit-cake.

bukowski | 8/23/2007, 1:08 am EST

Markus, the guy without an opinion, comes in the thread rips everyone that’s capable of formulating one. Why is it, that every single day, there’s a douche like you who shows up, and just makes blanket statements about everyone. Hey, you’re the guy who’s smarter than everyone, yet you don’t have a damned thing to say. You’re a dime a dozen around here.

bukowski | 8/23/2007, 1:11 am EST

Hey Serj, thanks for the homework assignment. When I was a kid, I never did homework, so I guess you’re fucked!

Dear Brad | 8/23/2007, 4:31 am EST

If you don’t feel the need to respond, then why do you bother posting any comments at all?

Chuck | 8/23/2007, 11:36 am EST

Granted, the request is bizarre, it could lead to something interesting. It’s all opinion, and yes, maybe Serj is self-serving. Then again, without “pointless” stuff like this everyday, would you be commenting on and reading Rock Daily, well, daily? Anyways, my response…

To me, civilization is, in part, the government and structure that we live under, the one that allows us to drive around listening to music and reading “Rolling Stone” without fear of being blown up. Without civilization, I think all money would be worthless, people would riot and maybe become nomadic. No electricity. No phones. No more gas. I see major corporations going into hiding, business in general coming to a halt, bringing us into a simple, day-to-day existence, not ever planning beyond food and shelter for the day.

bukowski | 8/23/2007, 2:43 pm EST

Dear Brad, chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp

4D | 8/23/2007, 2:55 pm EST

Yeah, that’s the one, Bukowski. 3rd from the bottom.

4D | 8/23/2007, 3:02 pm EST

civilization = yin-yang

bukowski | 8/23/2007, 3:58 pm EST

I was responding to Dear Brad, 6th comment from the top (icluding my accidental double post) I guess should have addressed him as Dear Dear, Brad. I don’t think I was reffering to you. I think I’m just confused on this one. This person apparently addressing Brad and not me. Oh whatever, now I KNOW I’m completely confused. So let’s just chalk this one up to CONFUSION, huh?

4D | 8/23/2007, 5:40 pm EST

Brad = Big Bouncy
to a tee.

4D | 8/23/2007, 5:42 pm EST

Big Bouncy also stole Candy-O’s screen name in one of the recent comment posts over at the Sheryl blog. He hates her, man.

bukowski | 8/23/2007, 5:52 pm EST

I’ll go get THE RAKE . . .

4D | 8/23/2007, 6:27 pm EST

Brad = X
X = Satan
Satan = arrogant prick
arrogant prick = Big Bouncy

Thanks, Bukowski. I do have some good friends from NYC.
~peace~

Maggie | 8/23/2007, 6:45 pm EST

I like the idea of a “poem, drawing, etc.” That could be thought provoking. People bantering on the R.S. comment section… not so much.

4D | 8/23/2007, 6:59 pm EST

I like that idea too, Maggie.

bukowski | 8/23/2007, 7:08 pm EST

I’d love to see you teach a seventh grade math class! I guarantee the kids would definitely pay attention. You’re definitely evolving as a blogger! I like the edgyness! Keep up the good work, kiddo!

bukowski | 8/23/2007, 7:09 pm EST

Candy, don’t take this the wrong way, but I’m becoming very intrigued about your candy!

bukowski | 8/23/2007, 7:55 pm EST

C’mon, C,mon, I know you can handle it!

candy-o | 8/23/2007, 8:02 pm EST

I did do some teaching (art classes) @ post-sec level, but I didn’t like it very much. I was ok at it I guess, but I’d rather “do” the art than teach it. There definitely is an art to blogging. Who would have thought?

candy-o | 8/23/2007, 8:03 pm EST

Math is a bit boring to me.

candy-o | 8/23/2007, 8:08 pm EST

Talk later, Bukowski.
I have to run again.

pLaNeTcArR | 8/23/2007, 8:18 pm EST

Advanced civilization exists in Caribou country.

bukowski | 8/23/2007, 9:21 pm EST

Don’t run too fast. If you don’t hurry, you always reach your destination on time. Thanks for looking up Bukowski. I’ll do the same with your influences. Don’t take my comments too seriously; I live on the edge, and have to always push the envelope. I have no choice. So there it is.

candy-o | 8/23/2007, 9:34 pm EST

I choose quality over quantity, so I usually take my time when I need to. It’s always better than doing a half-a&$ job. Since you’re from NYC, have you been to the Met Museum? I haven’t been to NY yet, but anyone I know from there is pretty cool.
~peace~

candy-o | 8/23/2007, 9:46 pm EST

PS – the edgy stuff…that’s what I liked about Nirvana.

Sarah Harness | 8/26/2007, 11:34 am EST

Well I think maybe Serj and the rest of his band has been describing the various aspects of civilization in the last 5 albums. religion, politics, wrongs….. That is really a BIG question. and civilization couldn’t end all at once…. Im going to write a book and its title will be “Manic welfare Mom from OZ” I look forward to the end of civilization as most of us know it. civilization has me constantly questioning my worth and abilities as a human being. The line between haves and have nots would blur…. I would love to embrace the more un-civalized ways of living like hunting for my own meat except the government says I have to pay out the a$$ to hunt an animal that would feed my family and it remains cheaper to use my foodstamps to by beef or whatever maybe they should take foodstamps for deer tags…. that would be great….. ha ha ha the end of civilization means Saratopia for my family….. and no I wouldnt even miss the internet. oh yeah there is so much more to that answer… like I said I’m going to write a book so If Rolling Stone wants to send me to do the interview I could engage Serj with more answer then he could want…~Dragonharness@cableone .net

Ophelia | 8/26/2007, 6:39 pm EST

Sarah,
Civilization doesn’t question YOUR your worth and abilities as a human being. You question your own self-worth. The typical poor, poor pitiful me attitude. Believe me, there is somebody out there much worse off than you are. Welfare doesn’t even “exist” in 3rd world countries. Count your f-ing lucky stars.

Sarah Harness | 8/26/2007, 7:17 pm EST

oh yes I do count myself as lucky there are pros and cons to everything, my situation included and I didnt say everone else questioned my worth but that I did Its part of what pushes me so far It can be frustrating though when it gets to be too much…. and besides…. who’s to say that for once in a blue moon I cant have a poor me post Somewhere…. thats not really the end all of who I am :)

Ophelia | 8/26/2007, 9:32 pm EST

WHY am I not surprised…right over her head.

Dusk | 8/28/2007, 7:02 am EST

CIVILIZATION – The name given to the attempting by human beings to bring some sort of order to their society. In the process, destroying everything in their path, making each others lives a misery, and creating general havoc.

THE END OF CIVILIZATION – Most people would probably kill each other, people would starve in richer countries because the 3rd world would be watching it’s own ass rather than selling products to richer countries for peanuts.
Obviously the higher class would be dead within three weeks.
Nature would re-claim what was rightfully hers as the human population disintergrates, and possibly disappears altogether.

I however am not affected by this, because I am an Alien.

“Brad | 8/22/2007, 3:57 pm EST

It means not having to respond to self indulgent crap like Serj’s question.”

Brad, that’s a pretty shallow comment. Grow some brains and come up with a comment/response with some intellect.

mindctrl | 9/2/2007, 12:39 pm EST

Civilization and everything that comes with it has caused almost every single problem we face today. All of the so-called benefits we have gotten from it have all been negated by the negative effects, which are largely ignored and/or unrecognized. If civilization were to end, it would be the beginning of a rejuvenation of what’s right and natural. Humans are living at odds with what is natural on this planet, and we’re on a course of self-destruction which is doing terrible harm to the planet. Luckily for the planet and all other life forms, when humans reduce themselves through the various byproducts of civilization, the healing will begin.

Drain | 9/2/2007, 5:39 pm EST

Writing on this subject is a very tall order. I don’t presently have time to write a book, and essays can be pretty dry and boring to read. After a much-needed break from the business world, a more tangible and creative analysis could be presented by me – but not at the BLOGS. I protect my ideas.

Eric Ouimet | 9/3/2007, 2:31 am EST

I don’t think you can look at civilization as a whole because of the demography differences. I think that these days areas with poverty feel they are left behind in apathy Left trying to bridge gaps between more educated and developed areas is a constant shot in the dark. Because they either have lack of knowledge and help. Subconsciously there “primal fears kick in” left behind in the times of hardship. The unthinkable is sometimes the only way out of the rut. Culture clash happens when they know there neighbor is doing much better.
Population is also an issue giving
people false impressions of the old
saying “strength in numbers”. The problem with that is to many people
expects like somekind of safety net
when things go wrong like a possible invasion that will change the whole way of life. And people don’t like change if your already in the comfort zone.
That is only my thought and not yours. You are entitled to your own views and expressions.

spacegirl | 9/12/2007, 8:34 pm EST

hey serj, i don’t know if you’re going to read this but, here’s my thoughts:

my opinion is:

civilization: i think most of it’s space related, if not, all. both physical and mental

ending: unpredictable, ’cause their’s a lot of stuff in the universe that hasn’t been discovered and everything can/has an impact on everything else, nothing can have full control of itself, maybe

and the theorie’s subject to change for the furthest extent of it.

MJCassady | 11/9/2007, 9:22 am EST

Civilization is a community built with a government, technology, system of writing, a calendar, and a division of labor.

If it ended? We’d probably revert back to nomads, which is how it was before civilization was erected by the Sumerians. It wouldn’t be too bad, actually, it would just be a lot more moving around for everyone and Darwinism would go back in style ;D

We probably also wouldn’t have to worry about racism as much, either since we’d have bigger things to worry about (or nomad groups would be racially exclusive). But I think eventually, if we learned to settle again, civilization would be recreated.

Good luck, Serj, love what you’re doing.

Civilisation neans humans destroying the world to gain more. Live and let live

rick barningham | 4/21/2008, 1:12 am EST

civilization on this planet is like mold on a blueberry, we are like a virus, our civilization consumes and destorys almost everything , then we move on and do it again. WHEN civilization ends, the next creatures that evolve to dominate the world will look at our fossils and our city ruins and wonder “what it must have been like back then”. on a side note, i believe that humans are a mixed breed of apes and aliens, we have the primal hatred, violence in us, we also have an intelligence in us. put these two together, youll get a smarter more intelligent way to be violent.

DoGabriel | 8/14/2008, 10:59 pm EST

Civil … the civilization in, and of thought … captured ,sold .. these thoughts of life in death .. calls more than living , the living.. for self … keeps on dining out after 12.. enough so… what kills killed me. …following to death your death .. save me here .. civil… need these pills .. need my conversion ..i m dieing quicker than what they would think .. srj… 7.0

Garg Unzola | 11/17/2008, 2:56 pm EST

Civilisation means the organisation of society. What would its end mean? That’s not a valid question, since as long as there is more than one person alive there will be some kind of social organisation and hence civilisation.

The end of our current civilisation means a return to swinging in trees flinging our poo at each other instead of living in self-styled creative dwellings flinging lawsuits at each other.

The stronger poo flingers will end up determining civilisation’s destiny while the weaker poo flingers will end up digging ditches and dreaming of a revolution to overpower the stronger poo flingers. Bottom line: learn to fling poo now and avoid the rush later.
