New Music Tuesdays: M.I.A., Rilo Kiley

8/21/07, 10:00 am EST

Rolling Stone’s Joe Levy says both M.I.A.’s Kala and Rilo Kiley’s Under the Blacklight require repeated listenings, but they’re worth the effort. Is Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis the best songwriter in the biz right now? Levy explores her band’s sex-and-breakup-packed major label debut, then breaks down the globe-trotting and political LP from M.I.A., who brings out harsher beats and plays with the tropes of gangsta rap on her sophomore full-length. Read the full review of the Rilo Kiley album here, and get the full text of the M.I.A. review here.

I LOVE Jenny Lewis!

I love boobies.

Kala is excellent. Definitely not as worried about being a crowd pleaser as Arular, but worth the added listens.

diana king | 8/21/2007, 12:02 pm EST

i like maya arulpragasm AND jenny lewis AND blake sennett AND boobies!

Rilo Kiley | 8/21/2007, 12:19 pm EST

I know the MIA album rocks a whole lot, but I haven’t heard Rilo Kiley. I’m always intrigued by ’sell out’ records…some are written off all too quickly when some, despite wide distribution and slick production, can contain an artist’s best songs.

I actually bought Kala this morning. So M.I.A. , your welcome. It’s a pretty incredible album to say the least. I believe everyone sould have it. It is just that good!

me | 8/21/2007, 1:41 pm EST

I liked her better when she was just that chick from that crappy fred savage movie “the wizard”. Being a child actress is so punk rock.

TheCat24 | 8/21/2007, 2:53 pm EST

“…Jenny Lewis is the best songwriter working today.” Hello? Did Bruce Springsteen die? Dylan dead too? Rodney Crowell? Rosanne Cash? Lucinda Williams? Hello? You are out of your mind. Or is just bad taste and woeful judgment?

shaun | 8/21/2007, 3:05 pm EST

“Jenny Lewis is the best songwriter working today”

What, did EVERYONE ELSE die???

JR | 8/21/2007, 4:00 pm EST

where can i find that picture of her in her undies?? wondrous!

Marc | 8/21/2007, 4:23 pm EST

The Rilo Kiley is in fact very slick but so was the last album (more adventures) compared to there first 2 but there all still very good. There just a bnad who growing up along with there fans and trying new things. If you think you might like this band, then check out there breakthrough song “portions for foxes”. Its def an indie staple. Great hooks, great lyrics. Maybe that will help you like them even more. New album on sale at Best Buy this week for $7.99. Go pick it up.

Standout Tracks

“Close Call”

MIA is annoying-thank you

Your mom | 8/21/2007, 6:25 pm EST

Joe Levy should hire someone who isn’t an out-of-touch fossil to tell him what to say.

Aaron | 8/21/2007, 7:29 pm EST

M.I.A. is the most interesting and innovated women in music today!

Neil | 8/21/2007, 8:34 pm EST

Both of these records are great, but I felt Joe Levy didnt seem interested about talking about either of these albums.

Evan | 8/22/2007, 1:34 am EST

God, who cares about EITHER of these records? Rollingstone seemed to miss the best release so far this year: Where is Okkervil River’s “The Stage Names”?? You guys never reviewed it. Why? I don’t know. Maybe because you guys don’t like GOOD MUSIC!???? The new Rilo Kiley album is a complete waste of time. And don’t get me started on MIA..

Daniel Kaproth | 8/23/2007, 6:02 pm EST

Good god. Both of these records are TERRIBLE. The M.I.A. is just plain annoying and Rilo Kiley have actually managed to make a worse record than Tegan and Sara, which is saying A LOT. All of this hipster b.s. needs to go away and die, quickly. Why not do yourself a favor and listen to the new Earlimart or Tom Russell comp instead?

Yuri | 8/23/2007, 8:20 pm EST

Kala is one of the best albums of the year , US musics sucks
Go M.I.A

Afficianado=Contrarian B.S. | 8/24/2007, 8:42 pm EST

M.I.A.’s album is phenomenal. She’s also drastically improved her live show w/ a new d.j.–saw her at Rickshaw Stop in S.F. last month, really small and intimate venue and the new material was fantastic. If you hate house music, jungle and/or hip hop you will find it annoying yes, but if you hate these a priori shut the f*&^ up…why waste our time posting about how annoying M.I.A.’s album is?? She’s doing things no one else is doing, how many artists can you say that about? And it’s not worthless drivel but wide-eyed, aware and still, somehow, positive.

Green | 8/25/2007, 4:36 am EST

Rilo Kiley’s last album, More Adventurous, was their first for a major record label, not this one, so that skews your argument why their sound is radically different. And while I agree that Jenny Lewis is a good songwriter – check out her solo album, Rabbit Fur Coat, for more proof – it’s going a bit far to credit her with being the best song writer today. You need to get out more!

SHiN | 8/26/2007, 4:13 am EST

m.i.a’s album is hot. she’s like the rihanna of sri lanka. damn i wanna bone her. i will go buy her cd. that other crap before it, rilo kiley. aint u ppl sick of ‘love song’ this and ‘break up’ that? theres like a billion ppl singin about this crap. it spans like every genre in existence. god, its either that or somebody talkin about bling bling and bein a pimp and gettin drunk and high and whatever else. get a life! avant-garde is what everyone should aim for, and m.i.a. does that better than most ppl ever will. tongue twisters plus addictive beats equals excellent songs.

Corporal | 8/27/2007, 2:16 am EST

Critics(like J Levy) are prone to hyperbole and child-like excitement everytime something new tickles their eardrums. MIA is not so radical if youve listened to more than five bollywood sountracks. Rilo is chick-rock dressed up in pretentiousness. All country break-up songs have already been written.

did he really say “the not as excellent kala”… did he forget that kala got a better review than rilo on this very website.. its funny to hear m.i.a.’s lyrics without the ghetto slang like hummer hummer instead of humma humma. good review tho.
