One day after two men died during Ozzfest at the PNC Bank Arts Center, alcohol has been banned in the parking lots of the New Jersey amphitheater — and with 229 arrests at the Center in the last week, it is becoming one of the most troubled venues in the nation. The deaths of Raymond Guarino and Patrick Norris are still under investigation, but they are believed to be drug- and alcohol-related, according to police. In May, thirteen underage fans (the youngest of which was eleven) were taken to the hospital for alcohol-related illnesses during the Center’s first summer show. Hundreds of arrests have been made for underage drinking and other offenses throughout the season’s concert series, including eighty-three on the day of Ozzfest and ninety at an O.A.R. show the Saturday prior. Concertgoers of legal drinking age will still be allowed to purchase alcohol once inside.
Police circulated the parking lot before Friday’s Velvet Revolver concert, checking the contents of cups and asking tailgaters to lift their cooler lids. According to reports, the precautions were not foolproof — many fans poured beers into cups unnoticed or found a way to sip from the bottle in secret — but there was no one stumbling around noticeably drunk. This summer’s underage drinking problems have been widespread: Last month, John Mayer chastised offenders with a lighter-hearted blog entry directed at the sixty-three fans arrested for charges including underage alcohol consumption at his Hershey, PA concert.
