Neil Young To Release Sequel To Unreleased 1977 Album

8/20/07, 11:25 am EST

photo: Neil Young
Thirty years after shelving Chrome Dreams, Neil Young has taken to his official Web site to announce plans to release a new album entitled Chrome Dreams II. The forthcoming album — which was previewed for Reprise Records last week and is due October 16th — contains ten songs, three of which were previously written. Two of the tracks are epics, clocking in at 18:30 and 13:00. Young’s current backing band on the record includes Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina, bassist Rick Rosas and pedal steel guitarist Ben Keith. The Blue Note Horns are on one track and a children’s choir is on another. Young will launch a North American tour to support the album that kicks off around October 13th. After the original Chrome Dreams was put aside, many of the songs appeared on subsequent Young albums, such as “Like a Hurricane,” “Powderfinger,” “Sedan Delivery” and “Pocahontas.” What does this mean for the twenty-years-in-the-making Archives: Volume 1 box set, due out February 14th, 2008? “This doesn’t push the box set back, according to [Neil Young's manager] Elliott Roberts,” a spokesperson for Young says. “But don’t make me sign a blood oath on that one.”

Neil Young looks like Neil Diamond more than Johnny Cash.

This should be another great Neil Young Record. I even forgive him for Greenville and Living With War, ’cause the rest of his stuff is always strong

Hey Jonathan,

Stop promoting that friggin tubejuke.com bullshit website on these pages. We don’t give a shit if you found Neil Young’s videos on there or any other artist or musician’s videos. We can see you’re just trying to put in a free plug here for your site. If you have a comment about Neil Young, then say it. Don’t tell us where to go to find his videos.

willy potts | 8/20/2007, 3:40 pm EST

i consistently include several NY songs in my playlist when i perform, including “Heart of Gold”, “When the MOrning Comes” and “Old Laughing Lady”. Mr Young has had a strong influence on my style of piano playing since the late 60’s….

Neil is the greates songwriter of our time period. Anyone who hates on such a talent can die. Go buy a fall out boy record you cock smokers.

Pedro | 8/20/2007, 9:28 pm EST

I am very happy to see Neil Young will still suprise and delight us with his amazing songwiting ability. He is truly a great musician who I have all the respect in the world for.

Skullfreak | 8/20/2007, 10:13 pm EST

Who gives a fuck?? He’s the most overrated singer/songwriter of the last 30 years. What’s next? The lost B-sides of ‘Harvest’? He sucks….and a lot of you out there know it.

Neil continues to kick ass in the free world.

Like his stuff or not, he’s one of the few artists who’s only ever done what he wanted, irrespective of record sales or what “fans” want.

That takes rocks and Neil’s are still rolling the Free World, and any he’s welcome to.

ken vail jr. | 8/21/2007, 4:47 am EST

neil is unconventional in a good way…i love how geffen sued him for being ‘uncommercial’ in the 80’s…i recall he put out a rockabilly lp after his techno/devo-ish lp ‘trans’….and a country lp after the rockabilly one, and a hard rock lp after that (’landing on water’)….yeah he doesn’t have a typical or pretty voice, but he’s been a lot more productive than his pals crosby, stills and nash….funny though, a sequel to an lp that was never officially released?!!?

Slipstream Fighter | 8/21/2007, 8:13 am EST

I am contantly amused by those who automatically put down artists who have pushed the envelope for more years that the writer has been around, just because they have no one of their own who can rise to the calling. Neil Young continues to create great music and to do things HIS way. Can’t wait for the album and tour.

Skullfreak | 8/21/2007, 10:35 am EST

He’s a has-been, and a loser. A few good albums? Sure. But all you losers think he’s the messiah. Zero musical talent.

cota | 8/21/2007, 10:45 am EST

Hey Skullfreak,,,,,always so much potty mouth from you!! Whats up with all the negativity?

Who do you consider worthy of our/your praise?

Pick up a copy of “Heart of Gold” dvd and watch it,,,,hard to deny the talent there,,,,,,,Neil is freaking awesome!!!!

Bozo | 8/21/2007, 11:09 am EST

SkullFreak:

Not everyone can appreciate Neil Young’s music…

If you don’t like his music, don’t buy it or listen to it.

I suggest you stick with sittin’ in the corner listen to your britney spears collection, I’m sure you’ll obtain many hours of enjoyment from your collection!

Fuzzy Nuts | 8/21/2007, 11:52 am EST

Hopefully it will be better than his lets impeach the president bullshit. Neil and Barbra Streisand should tour together. They could call it the “Bush Sucks Tour” and continue to lecture the public with what we already know. Bush is a bad president. No shit. Maybe they could get Spicoli to open for them. Neil Young is a much better songwriter when he speaks from his soul instead of spewing unoriginal tirades.

twistingbacchus | 8/21/2007, 12:26 pm EST

THE CHAMELEON OF ROCK ‘N’ ROLL!!
Keep on rockin’ in the free world Neil! Can’t wait for the album & tour!! I don’t see where people think he looks like Johnny Cash in this photo–not at all! But the photo of him does slightly resemble Tricky Dick! I will say that! One other comment: How does one release a sequel album to an album that was never released? Neil must be smokin’ some good shit!

Burnt Crispies | 8/21/2007, 12:26 pm EST

This will probably be his last album because he looks like he’s got one foot in the grave already so buy and enjoy before he’s gone. I wonder if they’re gonna be dragging around a breathing machine for him when he goes on tour.

Zimmy | 8/21/2007, 1:01 pm EST

SkullFreak, If you dont care why are you posting. Go listen to his 2 good albums like Zuma, comes a time, on the beach, Time fades away,Harvest,After the Gold Rush,Live Rust,Self Titled, Dejavu, and about 20 others you ass eater. Neil is a one man band. The most unique voice. I put Neil directly next to Dylan when it comes to accomplishments.

candy-o | 8/21/2007, 4:22 pm EST

Cota,
Have you even been to a Neil Young concert? You can’t fully appreciate Neil Young until you “experience” his live concerts.
Watching a DVD isn’t quite the same.

Neil…Thanks.

Shakey | 8/21/2007, 11:01 pm EST

In my mind, there is no one better in music history than Neil Young, now there have been artists with more record sells, but there has been no one that matches him with his constant desire to write and put out honest truthful records. I believe Dylan is right behind Neil, Neil’s songwriting has been constantly songer than Dylan’s over the last 20 years. And folks he may be 62 in Nov, but his “Hockey Hall Of Fame” sportswriter father, Scott Young lived well into his 80’s and just died back in 2005, Neil has a bunch more years left! Neil has always delievered to me a great album whether it be Trans Or Greendale (which is one of my favorites), I like them all, and can’t write for Chrome Dreams II. In fact Chrome Dreams, had he released it, would have better one of his best records in the 70’s, very strong… Neil’s a great artist in a time, where other people my age (25) listen to some shitty music.

Wilfried from Germany | 8/22/2007, 8:04 am EST

Hi, this is the best news of all !

Bangers-N-Mash | 8/22/2007, 10:59 am EST

The day Neil Young passes I will probably not come out of my room that day

This man has inspired me to do so many different things musically…

I cannot wait for the box set at all… give it to me NOW

cota | 8/22/2007, 12:55 pm EST

hey Candy-O (love the name!!),,,

thanx for the advice,,I’ll take you up on it next time he comes thru town,,,,,,,I had avoided Neil for the last 20 or so years, then had watched this dvd and was blown away by the power and emotion of his songs, as well as the professional presentation,,,,wow!! Maybe a little slow or “old fashioned for some (including myself!!), but still a pretty awesome show!!!

candy-o | 8/22/2007, 1:34 pm EST

Cota,
It was a double bill w/Pearl Jam. Are they too old-fashioned and slow for you too?

Wayne | 8/22/2007, 1:38 pm EST

I gotta know….Exactly what music do YOU listen to skullfreak? Enlighten us with your vast musical taste.

Neil Young is, in the words of Emmylou Harris, a “genre unto himself”.

I can hear Neil’s music in every folk-ish artist today.

cota | 8/22/2007, 2:27 pm EST

hey Candy-O (I still love the name, even if you sound just a wee bit grumpy this morning,,,,hugs and kisses, babe),,,,,No. Pearl Jam continues to entertaine me with each new disc,,,gotta love my home town boys. But Candy Baby, are you all right? Your sarcastic come-backs to my pleasant thank-yous are troubleing (sp?). May I suggest a hot cup of chammomile tea to calm your frayed nerves?

Steven James | 8/22/2007, 4:11 pm EST

Bob Dylan (the father)

Neil Young (the son)

Bruce Springsteen (the holy ghost)

It’s in the Bible. Deal with it. Im glad I’m an old man. It’s no wonder there’s so many bitter comments on here. I’d be bitter too if I was a young man growing up with todays music. This period in music history is worse than disco. You haters have my sympathy.

bukowski | 8/22/2007, 6:54 pm EST

I would normally say that if you and I met face to face I’d kick the complete shit out of you, but it looks life has already gotten to you. Such a sad and pathetic soul. I pity you.

If you happen to go into the Cheryl Crow thread, you can plainly see that Avril Levigne is having some difficulty.

Yes, adversity does build character alright. Live and learn.

candy-o | 8/23/2007, 1:54 am EST

No, not with you, Bukowski – I don’t have any X’s from NY…but I have a few friends from there.

candy-o | 8/23/2007, 2:36 am EST

You are from NY aren’t you, Bukowski? Am I the one missing a significant piece of info?

vacanthitchhiker | 8/23/2007, 3:16 am EST

I’m so frustrated by Neil always delaying the archives. Why doesn’t he release the original Chrome Dreams which is one of his greatest albums, Powderfinger is unbelievable, Stringman is mind-blowing, Too Far Gone is twice as good here than on Freedom. I’m still excited about the new album, but I’m still waiting for Homegrown, when that’s released, I’ll die a happy man.

pLaNeTcArR | 8/23/2007, 3:41 am EST

Bukowski,
You’re starting to sound like Bob and Doug MacKenzie, “eh”?

pLaNeTcArR | 8/23/2007, 3:46 am EST

I agree with Old Man…Neil Young should run for BOTH president and prime minister.

It was a joke, Bukowski.

cowpie in the mud | 8/23/2007, 3:46 pm EST

Can’t wait for this one, just hope he didn’t try to record it all in one day like LWW. The band lineup sounds good—always love hearing Ben Keith, but where’s the rest of The Horse? [next one maybe?] As for the tour, I’m SOFA KING HAPPY!!!

pLaNeTcArR | 8/23/2007, 4:04 pm EST

Bukowski…interesting comments @ metallica blog.

joe yankee | 8/23/2007, 5:16 pm EST

3 of the songs were previously written? I guess the rest were written after they were recorded? His current backing band on the record includes etc.? Does this mean we can expect different bands on the record at another time? In other words, WTF?
