Single Minded: Cool Tracks From Mandy Moore, Jay-Z, Calvin Harris, Neil Finn

Jay-Z, “Dig a Hole” [Original Just Blaze-Produced Version]
If Jay had gone with this track instead of the Swizz Beatz-produced track he ended up with, he could have doubled the number of good songs on Kingdom Come. What exactly was the thinking on killing this? Too much swagger? Not enough synth strings?

Mandy Moore, “Umbrella” [Rihanna Cover]
Because when we first heard “Umbrella,” our gut reaction was, “God, I’d really like this if only it were slower, sadder and not as good.” In the intro, Moore admits she’s “not a big Top 40 listener.” Then she spends the next four minutes proving it.

Destiny’s Child vs. Calvin Harris, “Nasty Girls Are Accepted” [Mash-up]
Astonishingly good mix-up of DC’s “Nasty Girls” with Harris’ “Acceptable in the 80s.” You know what else was acceptable in the Eighties? R&B and electro-pop sharing an audience.

Neil Finn, “Throw Your Arms Around Me” [Hunters & Collectors Cover]
Heartbreaking and gorgeous. This gets linked just so we get to type the phrase “Hunters & Collectors Cover.”

Actually, I quite liked mandy’s cover of “umbrella”. it was her interpretation of the upbeat dancing pop song, which sounded a lot more soulful when resung acoustically and slower. I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback on it from others as well..
.. then again, i never agree with authority or reviewers or critics. shame.

Man, he’s one ugly motherfucker!

Desecration of a Rihanna song is now a crime?

It was garbage when Rihanna did it, it’s garbage when Mandy does it, it’ll be garbage when Yankovic parodies it.

I’m sorry, I apologize. He’s really handsome, maybe even the sexiest man alive. Please. You can’t make fun of someone’s physical appearance on this thread? Especially someone who is as butt ugly as Jay-Z? I’ve seen better looking faces on rotting corpses.

Although I loved Rihanna’s version when it first came out, it has been overplayed significantly at this point. Mandy’s version is a refreshing twist on the song; however, I much prefer Marie Digby’s even more accoustic take on it.

I like Mandy Moore’s version of Umbrella a LOT better than Rhianna. I’ve also heard many of my friends say the same. I can’t believe the writer of this article really thinks it’s aweful.
