Reports of Hip-Hop’s Death May Be Premature; Kanye West Weighs In

8/17/07, 6:01 pm EST

Photo: Kanye West

Just when you thought it was dead, hip-hop stormed back this week with four albums in the top ten: UGK’s Underground Kingz debuted at #1 with 159,975 copies sold; Plies’ Real Testament debuted at #2 with 96,469 copies in its first week; Common’s Finding Forever held onto the number seven spot with 57,573 copies sold; and T.I.’s T.I. Vs Tip spent its sixth week in the number nine spot, selling 45,385 copies.

Granted, you don’t need to sell many copies these days to get into the Billboard top ten, and a lot of these sales may be attributable to people buying more records when they walked into stores for the much-anticipated UGK disc. But Kanye West is still excited, and plans on pushing hip-hop over the hump with his new album, Graduation, out September 11th, the same day 50 Cent’s Curtis comes out. “Do you know how great this shit is for hip-hop?” Kanye told RS, referring to the forthcoming charts showdown between his album and Fifty’s. “When I picked that date, I was like, ‘Yo, people are going to talk about this so much.’ People are going to remember this date.’”

The showdown between Kanye and 50 Cent may be at least as much publicity stoking hype as genuine rivalry, but their records herald an onslaught of seriously hot hip-hop releases out later this year. Chamillionaire, Lil Wayne, and Big Boi all have albums coming out in upcoming months, and in November a reunited Wu-Tang Clan plan to release 8 Diagrams, their first studio album of original material since 2001’s Iron Flag.

i think people will remember sept 11 for something a lot more important than two shitty rappers putting out lame ass subpar records to help suburbanite fat kids feel cool

bring back rock n roll already, someone, anyone…

AZ | 8/17/2007, 7:10 pm EST

Kanye and Bruce are the only established artists left to try and salvage this sad year. 2006 was so frickin’ strong (Pearl Jam, RHCP, Hold Steady, Beck, Dylan) and to follow it up with ‘this’ is like following ‘91 with ‘92, ‘87 with ‘88, ‘67 with ‘68. How many real rap/hip-hop three-peats have there been? Run-DMC ‘84-86, Beasties ‘86-92, PE ‘89-91, Eminem ‘99-02…can Kanye pull it off? I would hope he’d deliver the Album of the Year. It would seem to be his time. Hopefully everything else has been a warm-up…

Jeff | 8/17/2007, 7:21 pm EST

“When I picked that date, I was like, ‘Yo, people are going to talk about this so much.’ People are going to remember this date.’”

What an idiotic statement.

Oh yeah, people are going to remember 9/11 because of Kanye vs. 50.

TPG | 8/17/2007, 7:55 pm EST

Hip hop dead????

We should be so lucky.

man | 8/17/2007, 8:00 pm EST

West is a narcissistic asshole. No one gives a shit. pick up an instrument and learn how to play it you discriminating prick

Chuck | 8/17/2007, 8:51 pm EST

Not a fan of either’s music, and not a fan of Kanye’s personality. What an arrogant ass. Who the hell cares who wins the little “50 Cent/Kanye” sales battle? Nobody but Kanye I would wager.GOOD hip-hop is not going to be found on the charts anyway. Fiddy is a funny guy, but not a fan of his tunes either.

MJM | 8/17/2007, 8:51 pm EST

Kanye is either a complete fool, or he’s trying for cheap heat. Either way, what he said is ridiculous. That’s like releasing your CD on 12/7 and saying people will remember that date. What a jerk.

Michelle | 8/17/2007, 8:57 pm EST

idiot.

Spencer | 8/17/2007, 9:04 pm EST

AZ is right, the rap 3-peat is very rare, and Kanye and 50 are both looking at three-peats. I’m glad we get some Kanye to cut through the sadness of the day, that cd’s gonna be real tight.

saad | 8/17/2007, 10:07 pm EST

hip hop ain’t dead because it’s not selling…hip hop is dead because it’s lost all it’s respect and art…rap on the radio is a joke…with elementary rappers rapping about hoes and getting drunk in the club…how original!!!…they be rhyming shit like sad…glad…mad…had…rad.. .i mean if i sat down for a day i can write better shit than that…rap has lost all it’s respect with very few gifts…like common’s disk…or nas’ latest…it’s sad…real sad…rip hip hop…we knew you well…

Phil | 8/17/2007, 10:19 pm EST

Yea seriously Kanye people are remembering 9/11 because of the Kanye West vs. 50 cent sales showdown.

So much for never forget.

Bukowski | 8/17/2007, 10:48 pm EST

Living in NYC during September 11th, 2001, I really don’t appreciate these two cockroahes trivializing one of the worst moments in American history so they can sell some records. May God have mercy on your souls. I’m sure the families of over 3,000 people who those who were murdered won’t, neither will I.

Bukowski | 8/17/2007, 10:58 pm EST

Living in NYC during September 11th, 2001, I really don’t appreciate these two cockroaches trivializing and capitilizing on one of the most terrible moments in American history. May God have mercy on your souls. I sure won’t, and I doubt many members of the 3,000 people murdered will either. I guess that money IS the root of all evil!

allan | 8/17/2007, 11:18 pm EST

its great for peaple in same genre to compete which shows thatnhiphop is alive and kicking.big up 50and kanye.plizzzz just change the date and every thing will be great.

Baked Beans | 8/17/2007, 11:19 pm EST

Kanye was not refering to the fact that people would remember 9/11 because 50 cent and kanye’s album came out on 9/11 (of course that is not why anyone remembers 9/11), but rather the two most popular hip-hop artists today would be releasing albums on the same day(not necessarily 9/11). MJM please think before you post, maybe they will release albums on 7/4 or 6/6 (D-Day for your information or lack there of) or 2/14 or 12/25 or Easter next time. People will remember that their albums came out on the same day, so please get off your high horses and quit telling us how releasing an album on 9/11 makes you a bad person. Album of the year: Graduation

bukowski | 8/18/2007, 12:51 am EST

Do you think your average teenager knows when D-Day took place? How can you compare Easter and Christmas to September 11, 2001? He(Kayne) said, “When I picked that date,I was like, ‘yo people are going to talk about this date so much.’ people are going to talk remember this date. Now why do you think that is? If a tragedy had not occurred on that date, why would it be any more significant than August 13th? September 11 is not exactly Christmas or Easter. And what 20 year old or younger will be aware of D Day. If you can’t see that this is in really bad taste, then I don’t what to say for you except: yo,yo,yo Mr. Baked Beans, you really are a fuckin’ yo-yo, you know?

to Bukowski | 8/18/2007, 12:57 am EST

YEAH! FUCK THOSE GUYS! SEMPER FI!!!

corey | 8/18/2007, 12:58 am EST

yeah kanye people will remember September 11 for the showdown of two people talking about shit over a beat rather than the day thousands of innocent Americans were killed in one of the worst,if not the worst, attack in our country’s history…

Anonymous | 8/18/2007, 1:06 am EST

as a chicagoan i know kanye will win

Late Registration-
900,000 copies sold in the first week
that broke some fukin rekirdz

professor joe | 8/18/2007, 1:32 am EST

idiot or not, his music is more organic and he’ll sell more than 50 putting his lollipop rap act (the one he was supposed to kill) out of comission

JD | 8/18/2007, 1:35 am EST

Kanye will definitely kill 50 in the album charts. Rap may not be dead but very few rappers have had long careers with LL Cool J as a big exception.

Yeah, right | 8/18/2007, 7:30 am EST

What would you expect, anyway? Rap’s popularity ensures the continual glorification of human scum. It allows mainstreet America to applaud and long for all of the wonderful appeals of ghetto life.
There’s nothing appealing about the “music”, and it’s grotesque that human cockroaches like Curtis, Kanye, Sean, Jay-Z, Snoop and others are making millions by producing this shit.
It’s not music, it’s message is destructive and it’s a genre that spins in circles–nothing new, same old “let’s appeal to the no-brain listener by going deeper in the gutter” approach.
When can we stop glorifying these assholes?

Anonymous | 8/18/2007, 8:54 am EST

We ride with 50 allday anyday

Curtis Sept 11th

muck,muck | 8/18/2007, 10:15 am EST

rap is possibly the worst genre of music at d moment and has been 4 yrs,,,old skools alright tho

rap is dead | 8/18/2007, 1:40 pm EST

no kanyes no talented ass cant save rap, 50 cents stuck in 1995 when gangster rap was still cool, the rest of it all sounds the same, as far as im concerned rap died with tupac came back for a few weeks with eminem and now all originality has been sucked out of it…just a bunch of one hit wonders with shit for lyrics and a decent beat to make up for it…..RIP rap hopefully we never have to hear you again

? | 8/18/2007, 1:46 pm EST

no one will forget this date? god this man sense of reality is out of wack, “rap is dead” is right this music had its run but its boring and unoriginal…No kanye people dont forget when john lennon died or when like a rolling stone came onto the charts, they remeber when nirvana destroyed hair metal and when the beatles broke up. you in 10 years will be looked at as a man who made one ok album if they even remember that

cd | 8/18/2007, 2:17 pm EST

RAP IS DEAD!!!!!!!!!! for those you disagree your idiots

Gwen | 8/18/2007, 2:59 pm EST

For those who hate rap and hiphop: if you don’t like this genre, why do you spend time on it, typing down a reaction? Thanks for calling me an idiot, by the way. I hope Kanye West wins, sometimes I disagree with him but he’s a good rapper.

Patryck Cod'e | 8/18/2007, 3:58 pm EST

Who gives a rats ass?

RockGod | 8/18/2007, 3:59 pm EST

Rap music is CRAP MUSIC!!!! PURE CRAP!!! ITS ONLY GOOD IF ITS JA RULE OR DMX!!! BUT THESE 2 ARTISTS MENTIONED ABOVE ARE WANKSTA’S, EPECIALLY KANYE!!! He deserves a fat lip for his big mouth!

Um | 8/18/2007, 5:07 pm EST

50 Cent still makes music? I thought he only sold nutritional beverages. Hardcore Ganststa!!

Only 1 | 8/18/2007, 7:22 pm EST

Like people don’t already remember that date? (9/11). Wow, Kanye and 50 Cent are both releasing albums the same day. Big deal. I hope I live to see the day when rappers and rap music disappear FOREVER!!!

randy | 8/18/2007, 11:25 pm EST

RockGod | 8/18/2007, 3:59 pm EST

Rap music is CRAP MUSIC!!!! PURE CRAP!!! ITS ONLY GOOD IF ITS JA RULE OR DMX!!! BUT THESE 2 ARTISTS MENTIONED ABOVE ARE WANKSTA’S, EPECIALLY KANYE!!! He deserves a fat lip for his big mouth
ja rule?dmx?wow dmx a known crack head and ja rule a pure sell out. i dont really care for kanye but fifty did ruin ja’s career and became filthy rich from it.lol ja rule and dmx lol

randy | 8/18/2007, 11:30 pm EST

kanye is weak he doesnt even belong in rap.i seriously doubt he will outsell 5o,50’s last album didnt sell what he expected but it still sold very well and i dont see west doing those numbers espescially when dr. dre is backing 50 with some beats.ill be picking 50′ album up for sure.

randy | 8/18/2007, 11:32 pm EST

oh i also forgot that kanye is a cry baby.he was whining when he didnt get a reward he felt he deserved yeah real class act.

corgan | 8/18/2007, 11:45 pm EST

um…baked beans…12/7 was the day pearl harbor was attacked. maybe you should think before you post. and randy, kanye’s beats are far superior to dre’s.

kanye anyday of the weak. the massacre was one of the biggest sellout albums in hip hop history. whereas kanye’s follow up was a straight classic.

kenny | 8/19/2007, 1:37 am EST

who really gives a fuck? rap was good for a little bit, but its total shit now. how can a genre about violence, hoes, gangsters and guns be brought back by a guy who gets most of his album sales from preppy losers?

Ceejaye | 8/19/2007, 4:24 am EST

If u take a look at the Billboard charts neither 50 cent nor Kanye are getting much love compared to their previous singles in the yesteryears, 50 cent has released about 3 or 4 singles before his album’s even out & none of them have cracked the top 20, that’s why he’s desperate for (current)hit man Timbaland to save his arrogant ass, the times they are a changing, so is the climate in the music biz.So what these 2 desperate rappers are trying to do is create some sort of hype for their albums since their music isn’t up to scratch.Nice try though, they may fool others but Im not buying into their publicity stunts….I hope Linkin Park holds on to the best first week sales for the year.

Perez | 8/19/2007, 9:41 am EST

Regardless, I’d totally let Kanye do me. And again. And again. Fiddy is sooo fugs.

cota | 8/19/2007, 10:58 am EST

ugggghhhhh!!!!! I don’t know what is worse, rap music or the anti-rap bitches posting your rants!!

I’m just as quilty by responding,,,but,,,,live and let live, baby!! Listen to what you want to, and let others enjoy what they like,,,,life is way to short for this kind of bickering, bee-aches!!!

generic hiphop star | 8/19/2007, 12:53 pm EST

trailorparkchild | 8/19/2007, 1:59 pm EST

kanye rocks is all i gotta say

Scroat | 8/19/2007, 4:32 pm EST

I’m going to remember September 11th for the 3,000 plus people who were killed in an unprecedented terrorist attack on American soil . . . not because someone with the unfortunate name of Kanye West is putting out a record.

enriko | 8/19/2007, 4:51 pm EST

if you hate rap, you must hate other things as well, thus being a hateful, idiotic bigot. comprendez, n’est pas?

kanye rocks.

Baked Beans | 8/19/2007, 5:30 pm EST

um…corgan…I am THINKING, where did I post anything about 12/7 or pearl harbor (oh, I didn’t), I was simply referring to other dates that artists (although 50 cent is not an artist) may decide to release albums, but I completely agree with you that the massacre(total waste of money and time) was one of the biggest sellout jobs of all-time, so DON’T ACT LIKE I NEVER TOLD YA!!!

cd | 8/19/2007, 6:38 pm EST

I’ve been saying this for the last 3 years the rap industy is exactly like the hair band industry of the late 80’s. all gimmicks, all the music is the same, filled with one hit and gone artists, little to no real talent, just watered down crap music…so now we wait for a band to kill rap much like nirvana killed hair bands. rap will never fully disapear but i very much believe it will no longer have a force in our culture like it has had…all rap has done is pollute our culture with shit. being a gangster thug is not fucking cool!…god i cant wait for a change

Michael McKeon | 8/19/2007, 7:03 pm EST

I am so sick and tired of people saying that you’re not supposed to say negative things about recording artists, but to “just live and let live.” Or “if you have nothing to say don’t say anything at all.” That’s just a sure sign of complete stupidity. That’s what these are threads ARE FOR: to state your opinion. They’re not here for people to exchange their favorite recipes!

Sammy | 8/19/2007, 7:46 pm EST

If rap ain’t dead, someone define dead for me. That shit got wack in 1993 after Eazy died.

MJM | 8/19/2007, 11:33 pm EST

Baked Beans—-the point is Kanye said something as stupid(or egomaniacal) as “People are going to remember this day”, which was 9/11. Yes, they will, Kanye. They will because 3000+ people died in a terrorist attack, not because your lame-assed CD dropped. Does he think before he opens his mouth?

anarchistic romance? | 8/20/2007, 5:04 am EST

live and let live!!!!!!!

anarchistic romance? | 8/20/2007, 5:32 am EST

What a “stupid” cliche title for a novel.

ATM | 8/20/2007, 8:57 am EST

The popularity of talent-free jagoffs like West and 50 Cent are indisputable proof that popular culture in this country is dead. For god’s sake people, stop the madness! By the way, West and 50 Cent give each other Rusty Trombones.

matt | 8/20/2007, 9:20 am EST

Kanye has more talent than most artists of this generation. Listen to Late Registration and try to say otherwise.

Aries73 | 8/20/2007, 9:27 am EST

Every day, I try to believe this blog will weed out all of the racists, retards, and general malcontents (you know, the ones that think rock is the be-all, end-all of music genres) that seem to believe anyone with a functioning brain cares about what they think.

Rolling Stone, why do you keep disappointing me?

McLovin | 8/20/2007, 9:41 am EST

Yes, Kanye, people will remeber Sept 11 because you and 50 have new albums out then. There is no other reason to remember that day…

ATM | 8/20/2007, 9:46 am EST

“Kanye has more talent than most artists of this generation.” That’s essentially like telling someone they smell like dog shit, but not quite as bad as horse shit.

Scott | 8/20/2007, 9:53 am EST

The so-called “music” of Kanye West and 50 Cent will not stand the test of time. 10 or 20 years from now, absolutely no one will be enthusiastically recalling “Late Registration” or anything else they put out. Not gonna happen.

50 Cent | 8/20/2007, 10:05 am EST

People, just chill and drink some of my delicious Vitamin Water!

This is why I don't read Rolli | 8/20/2007, 10:09 am EST

You guys are some prejudice

This is why I don't buy RS mag | 8/20/2007, 10:16 am EST

You guys are some prejudice dudes. Yeah, rock was good…in the 70’s and 80’s. I still pop in GNR on the regular, but its time to move on. People often ridicule of Hip Hop of being “dead,” when in fact they never stop and look at what has occurred with the current rock situation.

I know I’d sure as hell want my kids to want to be like Kanye before some emo groups I’ve seen interviewed recently.

I agree, Hip Hop’s “from nothing to something” storyline has been played to death, but don’t hate on revolutionary and enlightening rappers such as Kanye due to sheer ignorance. He is the furthest thing from a “wangsta,” that comment alone suggests you have no f’n idea what you’re talking about.

Joe | 8/20/2007, 10:20 am EST

Hey kids, it’s time to play WHERE’S OSAMA?

mmw | 8/20/2007, 10:27 am EST

hip hop is dead. worst genre ever. they have doodoo in thier souls.

jaoman1 | 8/20/2007, 10:37 am EST

you are right, most hip hop won’t stand the test of time, but there is some real good shit comin’ out right now………

So confused | 8/20/2007, 11:07 am EST

I’m married to Hip Hop. Even though I don’t like the way it looks right now I would never say that it is dying. I’m amazed at how people would rather some artist of the genre stop rapping about the ghetto even though the ghetto still exist. You still have officers killing the innocent, you still have poorly funded schools poorly teaching their students, you still have local governments raising taxes in the wrong place. So let’s rectify the problem then condemn rappers for perpetuating a stereotype. Even greater, since when did those glorifying the hood comprise the whole of Hip-Hop. Are we that narrow minded that we only listen to the music that get radio play? Oh, no you guys only listen to the stuff on MTV, my bad.

The Me | 8/20/2007, 11:08 am EST

Editor’s Note: 50 Cent is NOT hip-hop. There is a distinction: hip-hop has something so say; rap spews self-indulged verses about money, bitches, candy shops, and other mindless shit that 50’s been rapping about since his first album which was solid.

Diarrhea Monster | 8/20/2007, 11:12 am EST

Kanye is right. People will remember the date of 9/11. It will always be remembered as the day of disaster: terrorism striking the U.S. and the disasters of the Kanye and 50 Cent CD garbage releases striking the U.S. Heaven help us all!!

Scott | 8/20/2007, 11:17 am EST

You know what’s really cool? Guys playing guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards…and singing! (not just in rock, but in any genre of music). You know what’s really lame? Guys “sampling” (i.e. ripping off) somebody else’s music and talking/yelling over the top of it.

C(rap) sucks | 8/20/2007, 11:18 am EST

i agree with mr. goodtimes, rap/hip-hop blows. Bring back live music where people actually need talent to create music using instruments, not just spitting out words that mean nothing….

TankCat | 8/20/2007, 11:39 am EST

Hip Hop is pretty much dead, except for Nate Dogg. He will live on forever.

MINISTER D. | 8/20/2007, 11:46 am EST

GOD BLESS 9/11 AND GOD BLESS HIP HOP AND KANYE WEST FOR PUTTING OUT G.O.O.D MUSIC. HIP HOP IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE GREATEST MUSIC GENRE EVER CREATED THIS SIDE OF GOSPEL.HIP HOP WILL ALWAYS EXIST AND CONTINUE TO GROW IT’S GODS’ WILL. PS LETS ALL GIVE NAS A HAND CLAP FOR MAKING THE WORLD THINK , TALK AND LOOK AT THE MUSIC WE LOVE AND THEY LOVE TO HATE.

Warren G | 8/20/2007, 11:46 am EST

Rap is not dead, I mean come on. I was just on Celebrity Fit Club, tell me that’s not hardcore

JD | 8/20/2007, 11:58 am EST

It seems that every day I come across yet another rapper I’ve never heard of. Today it was Swiss Beatz. There are simply way too many rappers that are basically the same, many who will be hasbeens in a few years.

40 OZ KILLA | 8/20/2007, 12:20 pm EST

I hope Kanye wins. I think a lot of the reactions on this thread are valid, I especially like the comment on the rap game being like hair metal, I totally agree. But remember some hair metal did survive and adapt to a more relevant form of music, GNR,Bon Jovi, and Def Leppard still could sell out shows and make music that is not terrible(well maybe not Def Leppard) I do think Kanye is doing something a little different than the rest of the pack. His lyrics are about more that bitches/money, although those topics do come up. Rap in its current form is dead, but rock did not die when hair metal fell off. There is still a pulse we just need the right catalyst to get the blood pumping to the right spots again, Kanye can do this! Viva Rock! Viva Rap! Viva La Musica!

Drugs Delaney | 8/20/2007, 12:26 pm EST

The Rolling Stone message boards are so painful to read. People saying that rap/hip-hop sucks, Rolling Stone sucks, etc. Where do all these people come from?

Thank God for the intelligent message boards over at other sites (which will remain unnamed for fear that some of these idiots might participate).

That is all.

Ignint | 8/20/2007, 12:56 pm EST

OK, first off, I love fool in the rain, and CCR on grapevine is unreal, but those days are gone. and although it feels nice to sit around a campfire reminiscing about the ‘goodoldayes’, taking a proverbial dump on another genre just so you can feel like its still “rad” to rock out to Boston, is just pathetic. i believe it was dylan who said “your old road is rapidly aging, get out of the new one if you cant lend a hand”. Lets not forget that “sampling”, is nothing more than showing your own interests, just like “influences”. Quick lets burn Clapton for re-doing every R.Johnson track ever known, and lets not forget to crucify Plant for “borrowing” Muddys’ lemon squeezing mojo. and lets not forget that rock icons like Aerosmith were in the toilet in the late century until Run DMC plunged them out with a righteous version of walk this way. and yet aerosmith type bands are idolized for their catchy refrains while hip hop artists are referred to as ghetto fabulous frauds, all the while eminem has recorded an even better version of ’sing with me’, paying tribute to the origin of almost every great american 20th century genre, the blues. so next time your in the bar and biggie comes on, just listen to the lyrics of Juicy and honestly ask yourself if its that different from Nobody Knows You.

Also september 11th is a wack day to release. the 10th or 12 wouldnt hurt anyone.

DC | 8/20/2007, 1:16 pm EST

ZZZzzz…who really gives a shit? It’s just marketing, not music.

Twenty years from now we’ll look back on this and simply say WTF were we thinking?

And it’s not just hip-hop — it’s anyone that’s in this for a buck.

I know for some it’s all about “it’s got a good beat and I can dance to it.” We’ve heard that for 50 years. But there were always artists that weren’t just about twitchin’ the booty and talkin’ about gettin’ their rocks off.

Carter | 8/20/2007, 1:38 pm EST

It’s not surprising that the comments in a magazine primarily aimed at Rock fans has a bunch of negative posts about mainstream Rap. It should come as no surprise, and people’s reactions here to Kanye are fairly irrelevant in the grand scheme of true public opinion, who probably wouldn’t agree that rap is on the decline, let alone dead.

Lumpy | 8/20/2007, 1:53 pm EST

50 cent? Pleeeeease….. what an oaf. I think he needs to suck on his own lollipop.

Eveland | 8/20/2007, 2:21 pm EST

Who the hell cares? I hope it disappears… there’s only about 3 or 4 true ARTISTS in “hip hop”(rap)… Common, Kanye, Mos Def, Talib Kweli. Music is terrible and RS feeds right into the MTV mainstream. RollingStone should feel ashamed of thereselves. They are no longer among the elite music magazines. Rap is Terrible. Blame that on the lack of originality and overused refrences…

C. | 8/20/2007, 2:39 pm EST

If hip-hop were truly dead, then so many people wouldn’t still be here talking about it.

The one | 8/20/2007, 2:46 pm EST

I don’t even like country music, but I think it would be so friggin great if Kenny Chesney, who’s also releasing a new album on 9/11, outsold both of these knuckleheads by a mile. It has a good chance of happening too. I would love to Kanye answer to that.

Mark | 8/20/2007, 2:51 pm EST

The truth is that the talented play instruments and sing, and the untalented sample, scratch, and rap. It’s that simple. All of the tiresome defenders of rap are in such deep denial about that fact that they’ll never understand what “music” is.

Drew | 8/20/2007, 3:02 pm EST

Yeah white people that listen to 100% rap are probably my least favorite people. But anyone who listens to rock and absolutely no rap is no good in my book either. Just cause you don’t like what you’ve heard doesn’t mean there’s no good rap. Check out Beastie Boys To the 5 Boroughs.

I think part of the problem is that there are a bunch of people who have bought into the myth of authenticity that is imparted by the signfiers of the guitar and instruments in general. So, when they see someone performing without one, or without a band, they can’t think of it is as music. Thus, they say sampling is stealing (ignoring the decades of cover songs, as well as sampling, aptly described by Ignint.) Ultimately, it is merely a show of their own prejudices. If you don’t like rap (or rock) that’s fine. But don’t trot out your preferences (which are probably instilled in you simply due to where and when and where you grew up as much as anything else) as if they’re the Bible on music and that you’re either with the right side or the wrong side. It doesn’t work for George Bush and foreign policy, it doesn’t work with you and music.

As for anybody who believes that creating an enjoyable song (using any metric) via samples is easy, try recreating Endtroducing by DJ Shadow. Same with rap–try rapping. Same with scratching.

This isn’t meant to be an apologia for crap music (hello 50 Cent, you can stop putting out the same song over and over now), but merely as an attack upon closed minded music “fans” who care more about their identity (as created by their liking “real” music) and ideological purity than about quality of music.

Lucifer Sam | 8/20/2007, 5:15 pm EST

I remember when my high school band director told me that rap was on its way out, and that it was just a fad for the 80’s. This was back in 1990.

rosa | 8/20/2007, 5:36 pm EST

alrigh alright, if this guys saying that Lil’ Wayne and 50 Cent are hip-hop, then what would qualify as rap these days?

rosa | 8/20/2007, 5:39 pm EST

sorry for my last post, I said “this guys” when in fact it was a woman who wrote the article, I appologize.

rims, bling, bitches, money and ego. hip hop is alive and swell.

captain smartass | 8/20/2007, 8:46 pm EST

What ya say, Josh? I can’t hear you above of the sound of my overdriven Fender Strat ripping through the Marshall Stack. And give me back my record player, you theiving motherfucker! BTW, there’s a difference between cover songs and samples, because people who do cover songs list who originally wrote the songs, whereas people who just lift other people’s riffs to sample them, usually don’t offer the same courtesy!

Josh | 8/20/2007, 9:54 pm EST

The problem, Captain Smartass, is that isn’t the only usage of sampling there is (although thanks to our fine judiciary and their interpretation of copywright law, it’s been pushed that one as opposed to the greater lenience given to, say, the Beastie Boys or Public Enemy circa 1988. I digress).

The point is not that all sampling is great and that every usage of an obscure Meters sample is brilliant. But it’s not the opposite either.

Yes, there is some blatant sample ripping that aspires to nothing except saying “hey, look at me and my big purse, I can clear a Beatles ample!” Sean Combs is the bete noir of this type of sampling of course.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, and it is a spectrum with better and worse uses, is someone Like, I don’t know, DJ Shadow–someone who can create beautiful soundscapes from his crate digging. Or, dare I say it, kanye West. The best sampling can take something and refashion it thereby shedding more light upon either the sample or the new (yes, new) song created.

Sampling has ultimately very little to differentiate itself from, say, photocollage–the creation of a new composite picture from others. I’d say that was art–would you?

Captain Smartass | 8/20/2007, 11:34 pm EST

Josh, I don’t think you need me as an audience member; you seem to be quite content listening to yourself talk. Well, I hate to break it to you, buddy, but I’ve been a professional studio musician for over twenty years now, and I’ve forgotten more about music than you’ll ever know. So, good day to you, Professor Pompous Ass

“rap is dead” “rock is dead”…fuck people need to get their head out of their asses and stop playing the game which states that the only things which can lay claim to relevance happened in the past fifty to sixty years. Music, much like people, has been around for thousands/tens of thousands of years. “the greatest album of allllllll time”, “the greatest singer of alllllll time”, “the greatest rapper of alllllll time”. Back up for a couple of seconds and realize how completely idiotic statements like these actually sound and then you can start realizing that it’s selfish idiotic statements and beliefs like that which contribute to how much we’ve fucked up the world. Just because it’s going to most likely END with us, doesn’t necessarily mean it BEGAN with us.

auramac | 8/21/2007, 12:36 pm EST

“Is hip-hop back?”

Oh, God, I hope not…

Long live rock ‘n roll!

Mainstream Music | 8/21/2007, 12:48 pm EST

Hi, I’m mainstream music. God, I miss being an important term. Without me, what will everyone do? Since there is no such thing as me, and nobody sells ten gazillion copies of their albums, I hope no one gets it into their head that music can exist without a main stream. Considering that when people mention me, they’re talking about a stream in a river which acts as the main conduit for the passage of water (or music). Since nobody needs me anymore, I think I’m going to be really lonely.

Dear Mainstream Music | 8/21/2007, 1:26 pm EST

Don’t worry, Mainstream. I can see you have plenty of water, because you’re drowning in your pretentiousness.

Josh | 8/21/2007, 1:33 pm EST

Aww, Captain Smartass don’t go! I was enjoying our conversation.

I don’t doubt you know far more about how to create music than I do. Unfortunately that’s irrelevant in considerations of something that is ultimately subjective in nature–the relative worth of any particular musical (or artistic for that matter) genre or style. If you don’t want to conversate on that, then that’s fine; it’s probably both our losses.

Mainstream Music | 8/21/2007, 2:28 pm EST

gurgle gurgle…

KobeD | 8/21/2007, 2:43 pm EST

Unless you or one of your loved ones was injured or lost on 9/11, then it’s just something you saw (over & over again) on TV. When did Americans become so weak that they can claim lasting trauma from a news broadcast?
Grow up, get over it, and stop falling victim to fear-mongering politicians who need you afraid, vicious, & oh so cooperative in mass murder abroad.

Sad case | 8/21/2007, 4:40 pm EST

After reading these posts, not only is rap dead, but apparently, so is the English language.

cd | 8/21/2007, 7:17 pm EST

Kanye is not revolutionary hes not even good, he’s a gaint cry baby who thinks way to damn much of himself, he had one count it one ok cd and when it didnt win some awards he threw a fit…I’ve heard his music many times before he came around through the mouths of common and nas.

RAP IS DEAD!!! kanye and 50 cent are just trying to promote their cd’s. I mean really if it wasnt for this article would like 90% of you on here even know about these cd’s and when there coming out? i know i wouldnt so there that proves it

myspace.com/mcyummymusic | 8/22/2007, 1:20 pm EST

2 things.

its a shame these “artists” are using sept. 11 as the release date. it deserves a boycott for that. and i’m not even that patriotic, but using that day just to sell more records is dispicable.

2nd thing, there’s so much great music out right now, in all genres. its weird that so much attention is given to people like 50 cent. i mean, what is he actually doing for us? and kanye, he has some more positives than 50, but the guy is an egomaniac. i could understand if he was making a ton of original stuff, but he samples hits. that shit is cheap. cmon bro.

Musiclover | 8/22/2007, 1:52 pm EST

Rap is a negative force from a negative group of people who could have made a positive impact. They talk about their decaying lives rather than bringing forth something their culture can be proud of. Music in the past has made amazing changes to society. Today it’s just breeding grounds for filth and destruction. Come on people, we’re smarter than that!

Captain Smart Ass | 8/22/2007, 7:00 pm EST

Josh, Hot air called and wants its hot air back.

Seth | 8/23/2007, 5:22 am EST

Anyways, hip-hop is dead, and fie to all those who exploit 9/11 for their own gains. Yes, Kanye and Fiddy are as bad as Dubya.

I forgot to say…

Fuck Fall Out Boy.

Seth | 8/23/2007, 5:27 am EST

One more thing:

How can one group Kanye West with George W. Bush?

They both exploited 9/11.

underground | 8/23/2007, 6:08 am EST

Hip hop was dead?
I didn’t even know it was alive.

Josh | 8/23/2007, 4:59 pm EST

Captain Smartass,

Thanks for the heads up. I’ve talked to Hot and Hot Air and I have reached a sharing agreement, so I have plenty more to spew. Have anything else constructive to add to this conversation or have you retreated to the “nanana you smell” stage of online and playground arguments?

bukowski (Cpt. Smartass) | 8/23/2007, 8:25 pm EST

At least this comment shows you have the ability to loosen up. But believe me, you are completely underestimating my intellect. If you want to get into a war of words with me you’re going get destroyed. Bring it on. But don’t waste my time with your boring vacuuous musicology horseshit!

anonymous | 8/28/2007, 10:41 pm EST

it’s sad that people are using the day to make their pockets bigger and also sad that people are fighting over this

fuck kanye | 9/11/2007, 2:30 pm EST

50 cents the shit

staylor3 | 9/23/2007, 2:19 am EST

This is why we boot leg their music that gets old after one day listening to it. Nothing being done by them is going to be remembered 10 years out like our famous 80’s music and oldies. Not the same anymore!

ZaQk | 9/26/2007, 8:30 pm EST

I agree that some rap can have destructive lyrics but its no worse than groups like slayer and manson who push their listeners to be anti christian. Hiphop was a great force for peace in the 80s and the most violent lyric was “ill squish u like a jelly bean” ll cool j. U can blame NWA for this ignorant shit kids listen to today

Splooge | 10/16/2007, 12:52 am EST
