Justin Timberlake Brings ‘FutureSex’ to Madison Square Garden: Live Report

8/17/07, 9:22 am EST

Justin TImberlake

Justin Timberlake was the toast of the town tonight in New York, and like any Southern gentleman would, he toasted back. “In the spirit of keeping it loose, New York – and because I like to drink – I’d like to share a toast.” The sold out crowd raised their plastic cups and bottles of beer. “So first of all, to the greatest city in the world,” said the 26 year-old, whose two nights of performances at Madison Square Garden for his FutureSex/LoveShow tour are being taped for an HBO special premiering on Labor Day at 9pm. “Kudos to HBO… They’re broadcasting live to the troops. Salute our troops!” Having already glided through “FutureSex/LoveSounds” and “My Love,” Justin’s suit jacket was off, his sleeves rolled up. “And last but not least, I just like to drink! Here’s to the Big Apple!” The crowd erupts, takes a collective swig, and Timberlake lets loose with the hit single “Senorita,” from his 2002 solo debut Justified.

“Do ‘Dick in a Box!’” a drunken frat boy-type accompanying his girlfriend calls out. But if he came for silly antics, the fan came to the wrong party— tonight was strictly grown and sexy.

Timberlake has got one of the tours of the year (it runs through November) and whole lot of other stuff on his plate right now—his hot new single “LoveStoned,” a highly anticipated new duet with Madonna, the hip hop hit “Ayo Technology” with 50 Cent and Timbaland, his new label Tennman Records (a joint venture with Interscope) and a new restaurant opening in Manhattan. There’s also those seven VMA nominations and that relationship with film hottie Jessica Biel. But he never looks like he’s forcing it: he squints with his hand across his forehead as if searching for someone special in the audience, while thousands of girls scream, convinced that it’s them that he’s looking for. Timberlake slid through a string of hits both new and old without sounding the slightest bit winded, as effortless as a kid sliding around in his socks on a slippery floor. JT’s gestures—smoothing his Mohawk, grabbing his crotch, tipping his fedora, tossing and twirling his mic—work seamlessly with his music. He popped, locked, and lept across the stage, played the guitar, piano, and keytar, flexed his falsetto, and flipped his middle finger to a handheld camcorder during a rocking, rousing rendition of “What Goes Around Comes Around.” The audience held up their end of the deal, and the squealing never stopped.

After a 20 minute intermission set DJed by producer extraordinaire Timbaland, a dapper Justin returned in khaki slacks and vest, a white button-down and sneakers, a fedora, and a handkerchief tucked in his back pocket. He and his matching back-up dancers looked like a hip hop version of Newsies as they performed “Rock Your Body,” “Last Night,” “”Damn Girl,” and “Summer Love” with choreography that was precise but loose. He dedicated the moving “Losing My Way” to “anybody who ever lost somebody they love” and beatboxed after an electrifying “Cry Me a River.” “If you’re freaky and you know it let me hear you make some noise!” Justin shouted as he opened the song of the moment, “LoveStoned” before sealing the deal with “SexyBack” amidst a lightning storm of laser lights. The screams were absolutely deafening when Timberlake returned for an encore. “I’m at a loss for words,” Justin said, sitting at the piano. “I’m so humbled by this moment. I can’t believe this is my job because this is so fucking cool!” Then he stood and clapped for the crowd, before belting out the ballad “All Over Again (Another Song),” and saying “I love you guys, thank you, that’s all I’ve got!” during his bow. Timberlake may be all grown and sexy now, but the boy still has manners.

Fantastic concert. Was amazed as I had no idea JT was so talented. I’ve watched the recorded concert from HBO at least 6 times. Can’t stop. I’m addicted. Phenomenal!

Tiffany | 9/1/2007, 2:55 pm EST

Justin is one of the best pop artists out these dayz… Coming from the background he has came from Justin has done very good for himself…. he has sex appeal, his music is cathcy and meaningful…. he can dance his ass of and he is a great actor… Somepeople need to stop hating on Justin because he is here to stay so get used to it… if you have enough time on your handz to sit here and hate on him you have no life and most likely you deep down love him and his music

Chuck D Jr | 8/21/2007, 2:24 am EST

“Justin Timberlake didn’t sell half of what Usher sold a couple of years ago”

FS/LS hasnt even sold a 3rd of what Usher’s last disc did, it’s barely triple platinum to Confession’s 10 million in the U.S, and Usher did that with a 10th of JT’s press coverage and without having to spread credit notes around to reimburse retail for the $6.98 sticker price after FS/LS dropped out of the top 15 in week #10, before it even hit platinum.

underground | 8/20/2007, 9:29 pm EST

Justin deserves to be “DISCREDITED” for shamefully defacing a Nirvana song. WTF was he thinking?

evelyn u. | 8/20/2007, 1:01 pm EST

People just have to hate, unfortunately that is the way of the world. Justin is a wonderful entertainer/musician/artist/ac tor. If you dont give credit where credit is due, then you are only making yourself look ignorant for not having an open mind. If you dont like him then that’s cool, but dont stoop to calling him names. Damn that’s just childish.

grace | 8/20/2007, 11:44 am EST

Cassie & Ted you are wrong the guy is still in love with Brit, listen to his relycs talking about his love and wishing for reconciliation. I didn’t even know losing my way was about lost of love until he dedicated to any one who has lost the person they love. He is moody right know bc Brit is having hard time right now. He wants her happy and back to music. I doubt if him and Jess is going to last he still longing for real love, which he got from Britney.

Can someone please pry the crack pipe out of Ceejaye’s hand and get her to rehab.

Britney Spears | 8/20/2007, 7:19 am EST

Justin was a real limp dick in bed.

Ceejaye | 8/20/2007, 5:39 am EST

I got a confession to make, oh no it’s not dirty, your imagination’s really wild slow down.Ok now that we got that outta the way - JT’s music is my guilty pleasure & the boy’s got a wicked taste in women from the Britney Spears to Alyssa Milano to Cameron Diaz & who’s the latest Jessica Biel? Give all props to JT, do your thing boy. Watch out for me Im next all the way from South Africa, Paparazzis upload your cameras for y’all about to get clicking, no flashes please my eyes are sensitive….

Jason | 8/18/2007, 3:37 pm EST

Justin Timberlake didn’t sell half of what Usher sold a couple of years ago. He basically rode Timbaland, just like he rode Pharrell Williams a couple of years ago. He’s just a product of good marketing.

Jacki | 8/18/2007, 3:20 pm EST

I love Justin Timberlake. He’s a talented musician, and a talented actor. Pop music isn’t my favorite genre, but good is good. His music is about having a good time, and lightening up. It’s a nice change from hard rock once in a while. Justin just gets better and better. And he also reminds me of Michael Jackson who also got better as a solo artist.

James | 8/18/2007, 2:57 am EST

I pay as much attention to this kind gent as I do a pimple. Some like him though.

He’s not an artist that tackles life’s inherent difficulties in a format I find the least bit appealing. But he’s got an audience out there.

Hassan | 8/17/2007, 7:14 pm EST

He’s the best hands down. He is musicaly talented. If you have never seen him in concert you have no idea. He is his own person and admits to being jackson like or prince like but guess what….that’s what great music is about, that’s what he grew up on, can you blame him? He is awesome and I back him up 100%. Keep on doing it Justin!!! He taking over and too bad to all the cry babies out there. Hate him all you want but he’s not going anywhere, haha. Too bad. See you on top of the charts. Peace

Yeah, right | 8/17/2007, 6:36 pm EST

The Beatles were musicians. JT simply knows how to play his own little flute. The guy blows serious dog.

Musical Jenius | 8/17/2007, 5:23 pm EST

I saw the August 15th show, and thought it was awesome. I liked JT before, but just how much talent and how cool he is so much more apparent now. He’s a genuine talent and very professional performer. If you don’t like him for whatever reason, that’s cool, but seriously those of you who are attacking him are sad indeed. Stop hatin’, jeez.

Anonymous | 8/17/2007, 5:00 pm EST

Everyone needs to chill. I can’t believe people are even bringing up Zeppelin…wtf do they ahve to do with JT? Different types of genre idiots! Justin Timberlake is very talented, and his music is fun to dance to and enjoy. So many people are close minded when it comes to music. For instance, if your a rock fan and all your friends are youd ont want to admit liking Justin because you won’t seem cool. WHo gives a S’hit! Like what you like. I like pretty much every genre of music! Bands and performers are talented for their own reasons. And if you dont like it…then why are yiu wasting your time even talking about it:)

Diarrhea Soup | 8/17/2007, 4:24 pm EST

Wait….wait….hold on here it comes…. *****faaaarrrrt*****, aahhhhhh, that’s dedicated to Justin Timberlake.

pissed off | 8/17/2007, 3:35 pm EST

a bunch of haters! justin works hard, and he is doing well. a bunch of jealous low-lives!

hansolo81 | 8/17/2007, 3:18 pm EST

Anyone that would compare this clown to The Beatles really has no musical knowledge. Yes, at first fans of The Beatles were screaming girls, but they were screaming becasue of the catchy lyrics they were singing, the unforgettable music THEY WERE PLAYING WITH THEIR INSTRUMENTS! Strumming a few chords to try to look like a musician is what JT does! For crying out loud, this clown has no vocal range!! Otis Redding anyone???? Sam COoke? The Four Tops? Marvin Gaye? These were REAL vocalist but you guys worshipping this puppet wouldn’t know anything about that. These artists did it for the passion for music. JT is a manufactured puppet trying to sell records and make money of all you consumerists…

Liquid Feces | 8/17/2007, 3:08 pm EST

After looking at that ugly picture of Timberlake and seeing (not reading) this article, maybe seeing a pic of Zac Efron and the High School Musical ain’t so bad after all?

Cassie & Ted | 8/17/2007, 2:49 pm EST

His Ex, Ms Spears is a freaking crazy lunatic whore! Props to him 4 discarding her nasty ass. Please tell me shes not opening the VMA’S like we are all hearing.

bukowski | 8/17/2007, 2:31 pm EST

Benji, you have a sick mind! I like it!

Hey Jessica | 8/17/2007, 2:29 pm EST

Cameron Diaz is with Chriss Angel now. So I guess he’s single. Good luck. maybe you and Justin will make a scorching couple.

Benji | 8/17/2007, 2:16 pm EST

Horrific. I hope he takes a single engine plane over rocky terrain sometime soon.

kevin | 8/17/2007, 2:14 pm EST

WHO CARES THIS IS NOT GOOD MUSIC HE’S A SINGING DANCING PUPPET…HACK

Jessica | 8/17/2007, 1:52 pm EST

I am just wondering whats up with JT and Cameron Diaz, if somebodysgots more info let me know.

midevil | 8/17/2007, 1:49 pm EST

The guy has got charisma. He’s also very doable (if you forget he did Brit Brit back in the day, but hey, we all make mistakes).

jess | 8/17/2007, 1:32 pm EST

Stu there is not any people out there who dont use the F word whether they have manners or not. English royalty probably swear but trust me they have manners. Justin is a gentleman

stu in nyc | 8/17/2007, 1:22 pm EST

if “the boy has manners”, then why does he use the f-word?

ccags829 | 8/17/2007, 1:03 pm EST

Last night’s show was awesome at MSG, just one problem: too much squealing. The 10,000 or so girls ruined it for me. I know JT is hot — he’s delicious — but seriously, the screaming girls really killed it. I could barely hear anything. I hope he does performances at smaller venues in the future. He’s great, but the fans gotta learn when to keep it down and let everybody hear him!

bukowski | 8/17/2007, 12:30 pm EST

Hey Stony, I’m down as long as your are willing to put him in your trunk and help me dig the hole.

jess | 8/17/2007, 12:05 pm EST

saw justin live in london and he was amazing!!!! people dont like admiting it but he trully is the NEW king of pop!!

Crayola | 8/17/2007, 12:04 pm EST

Oh and you can’t group Fergie and Britney into the same group as Justin - he actually has vocal talent, not to mention instrumental (piano and guitar, that is), and he writes his own songs! They are a totally different story.

Crayola | 8/17/2007, 11:58 am EST

Give it up people. Justin is talented, his concerts are fun, and you don’t need to hate him to prove you’re a “real” fan of music. Talent comes in various forms, and Justin happens to have talent in the pop/R&B and dancing arenas. It’s different than rock, folk, or whatever else you’re a fan of, but that doesn’t make it bad. You CAN like both - each serve different purposes and each can be enjoyed equally in different situations. Have some fun once in a while and rock out to JT. You’ll thank yourself for it.
And yes, last night’s concert at MSG was as good or better than this review suggests. Just watch it on HBO in September and you’ll see what we’re talking about.

Moe | 8/17/2007, 11:48 am EST

I agree with you EK,but just look at what people are calling musical talent these days!!It’s just so sad that Justin ,Britney,Fergie and the gang get all the press,I really believe they are shoved in peoples faces so much, they start to think they’re actually talented!!

Stony | 8/17/2007, 11:46 am EST

Can someone please put a bullet in this guy’s head?

Dee Dee | 8/17/2007, 11:38 am EST

This concert was the concert of the year. It was just spectacular!! I can’t even begin to tell you how much fun I had. If you were not there, you really missed out.

Dee Dee | 8/17/2007, 11:38 am EST

This concert was the concert of the year. It was just spectacular!! I can’t even begin to tell you how much fun I had. If you were not there, you really missed out.

Faint | 8/17/2007, 11:38 am EST

Those of you who want to discredit JT because he used to appeal to teenyboppers should remember that The Beatles also appealed to screaming little girls when they first came out.

JT has real talent…not just in music but also performance. He is the new King of Pop. Deal with it.

40 OZ KILLA | 8/17/2007, 11:28 am EST

I must admit JT is at the top of my guilty plesures list. His sound just reminds me so much of Michael Jackson I can not help but like it. I know it is more popuar to hate and ridicule JT that it is to like his music, but if it’s good it’s good, and as far as the Zeppelin comment nobody, unless on some good LSD, can say a 25 minute version of Dazed and Confused is a good thing. I’m a big calssic rock fan, but give a break on the “How the west was won” live set there are 3 songs over 23 minutes. In that time Justin could play 5 songs and make your mother feel young again.

wanker | 8/17/2007, 10:43 am EST

what a load of crap
HERE is the rule, IF U got back-up dancers
YOU SUCK, live it queenie

EK | 8/17/2007, 10:31 am EST

Just when will this clown’s 15 minutes of fame be over? If there were ever a need to have a picture besides a word in the dictionary, people like Timberlake, Britney Spears and the gang should be placed adjacent to the term “overrated”.

Scott | 8/17/2007, 10:29 am EST

The only word that always comes to mind when I see Justin Timberlake is…”twerp”.

The Phantom | 8/17/2007, 10:04 am EST

In one year, he’s gone from a teenbopper hack to a musical genius/sex symbol. He’s a media darling; it just tears me when I think of how brilliant Led Zeppelin were back in the day, and they couldn’t BUY a good review! The world has really changed. . . and not for the better.
