Beck to Release New Single on iTunes; Jay-Z is the Richest Rapper; Mariah Carey, and More

beck

  • Beck has announced he will release a self-produced single entitled “Timebomb” to iTunes on Monday, with all other digital downloading services to follow on August 28. The track will be released as a stand-alone, with no EP or full-length album to follow, and features Beck on keyboards and vocals with Brian LeBarton on keyboards and guitar.
  • Jay-Z has topped Forbes’ first-ever Hip-Hop Cash Kings list with 2006 earnings of an estimated $34 million, followed by 50 Cent and Diddy in second and third place, respectively.
  • Mariah Carey has confirmed (without any voicemails) her upcoming album will land in stores this November.
  • The latest rumor about the MTV Video Music Awards involves the station nixing Lily Allen’s appearance (reportedly a duet with Kanye West) because Allen’s Visa problems earlier this month created worry the British singer is not guaranteed to show up on VMA night.
  • D’Angelo has been fined $1,500 and given a six-month suspended jail sentence after the soul singer pled guilty to driving under the influence with a suspended license during a September 2005 accident.

Oh my God, he’s turning blue; someone call an ambulance!

bukowski | 8/17/2007, 10:50 am EST

God, Jay-Z. I wish someone would smash him in the head with a golf club 30 or 40 times! And BTW, WHAT THE FUCK does Beyonce see in this ass pilot? He one of the ugliest people I’ve ever seen. And how does he wind up making so much money? Everything that this guy touches turns into low grade shit. Why are people so willing to buy anything he has to sell? I just don’t get it. Maybe there was a memo I just didn’t receive.

memo | 8/17/2007, 11:17 am EST

All of the paramedics are currently busy and working overtime at the GNR blog.

VG | 8/17/2007, 11:34 am EST

Well, I never did receive any mission statement. Never mind the memo.

bukowski | 8/17/2007, 11:54 am EST

I know people who can help us get rid of Jay-Z, VG. Do you have any aversion to driving with putting a body in your trunk, driving to Upstate NY, or helping us dig a hole? It would be a new different experience. Perhaps it would give your painting a new rough edge. Your pal, H.C. Bukowski, Jr.

bukowski | 8/17/2007, 11:58 am EST

I think I’m going to work this scenario into my novel. What an interesting plot idea. Thanks for the indirect inspiration!

VG | 8/17/2007, 12:08 pm EST

I guess you might be familiar with the Tragically Hip…
…but that’s a long long drive, unless one has the time.
I’ve got to fly – got to get that ad done soon.
~ peace

VG | 8/17/2007, 12:11 pm EST

You’re welcome. Ever thought about getting into a career in advertising, bukowski? Or maybe novels are more up your alley.

bukowski | 8/17/2007, 12:20 pm EST

I do have a knack for the catchy phrase. The only that would concern me would be losing my soul by getting involved in advertising. I actually want to start my own multimedia company which would include a record label, a movie company, and a publishing company. I think I could do the advertising thing to finance this titanic idea. I know I would have to advertise to get this thing off the ground anyway. I really want to build this company as a venue for my own ideas. I really don’t want to work for anyone but myself. I really would prefer that because working for someone elses label or movie company usually entails selling out your own ideas to get something financed. But I need $$$ to make it happen, so I’m definitely open to all options.

bukowski | 8/17/2007, 12:23 pm EST

VG, I posted something on today’s Phil Spector blog under the name of “Write A Caption.” I think it gives a small insight to my sense of humor.

VG | 8/17/2007, 12:40 pm EST

Bukowski,
We can talk biz & artistic pursuits later…you have an interesting idea about starting a record label – very cool. Indie I would guess? I’ll check out your other post…speaking of $$$, have to get back to work…talk again @ the gorge.

VG | 8/17/2007, 4:10 pm EST

PS – sometimes one needs to keep their options open until something falls into place.

Bukowski | 8/17/2007, 4:31 pm EST

or breaks into pieces

VG | 8/17/2007, 4:46 pm EST

Pick up the pieces then. That’s up to you, Bulowski.

Bukowski | 8/17/2007, 4:48 pm EST

I’m doing my damndest, friend. I left a short message for you over on the Phil Spector thread. It will shed some light on my current predicament.

VG | 8/17/2007, 4:49 pm EST

Pick up the pieces then. That’s up to you, Bukowski.
(everybody makes spelling mistakes from time to time)

Bukowski | 8/17/2007, 4:49 pm EST

dear “memo,” thanks for the memo.

VG | 8/17/2007, 4:55 pm EST

Bukowski,
Is it just about the money, or is it something worse? The truth will always set you free. You know that, don’t you?

Bukowski | 8/17/2007, 5:54 pm EST

Something worse? I’m not sure what your aiming at. So ask me whatever you want. I have no fear of being perfectly honest.

VG | 8/17/2007, 7:12 pm EST

Bukowski,
The Phil Spector story is a bit disturbing, and I prefer not to read that crap.
…with that said, if your situation isn’t any worse than just the money, then your so-called predicament isn’t so bad, then, right? Money can always be replaced and earned back – whereas other things in life cannot be replaced.

Bukowski | 8/17/2007, 11:26 pm EST

Sorry about the Phil Spector. I just choose to make comedy out of most (not all) bad situations. If you don’t laugh at some of this stuff, you go crazy, you know? I am not interested in money as much as I am interested what it can bring. I’m not looking to live like a conquering emperor. I want security. I want to raise a family (even though I am 38, I still am hopeful) and not have my family living under the weight of finacial strain. Also, I would like to pursue my art without having to live worrying about the electric, gas, telephone, or making next month’s rent. charles Bukowski toiled in obscurity and sometimes extreme poverty and didn’t make it as a poet until he was 50. He wrote every day no matter what. So do I. I just want a life where there can be more options and room for adventures.

Bukowski | 8/17/2007, 11:44 pm EST

Music and writing are the only things I know how to do. I am not qualified to do anything else. That’s why IT HAS TO WORK. And due to some bad fairly recent events, I am living with my family. This is not exactly how I want to live my life. On top of that, I want to get the hell out of TN and NEVER look back. All these things require money. Period.

VG | 8/18/2007, 12:25 am EST

Just left a post @ Phil Spector blog. If music and writing is your main area, then you must be good at it. My whole entire career has been in design, so I am not about to change that…many years now in the biz. If I had a choice, I would paint full-time, but that isn’t viable just yet. Maybe someday…

VG | 8/18/2007, 1:21 am EST

Bukowski,
Nothing bad stays the same forever. The only constant is change. But it sounds like if you are good at writing and music, then you will “make it work”. Have never been to TN, so I don’t know what it’s like there…but I’ll take your word for it. Posting over weekend @ PJ blog.
~peace~

VG | 8/18/2007, 3:28 am EST

Bukowski,
Sorry to hear things have not been going that great. But if you’re good at music and writing, it will work out.

bukowski | 8/18/2007, 8:01 pm EST

It’s always easier to trust my inner voice and my gut when people say things like that. Thank You.

VG | 8/18/2007, 9:03 pm EST

I’m a true believer that if you were born with a talent, it’s a gift which should not be wasted.

bukowski | 8/18/2007, 9:22 pm EST

Amen.

bukowski | 8/18/2007, 9:39 pm EST

VG, I posted a little short story called Wimehouse? Where? Part 4 on the most recent Winehouse thread. It’s a little derivative, but I think it’s still charming. Anytime the scenario was used on a sitcom it’s always worked. Death and Sex usually equal comedy if done right. Check it out if you like.

VG | 8/18/2007, 11:42 pm EST

I read it. Glad that it had a happy ending, and that her career was saved, among other things.
~peace~

bukowski | 8/19/2007, 12:22 am EST

Charles Bukowski to the rescue!!! He saved her from killing herself. Her career? That’s a conversation for another time. I’m sure I’ll do some prequels and sequels. RS is being really cool with it lately. I think it’s a hugs and kisses relationship lately; which is great! Thanks for your time, Michael McKeon!

bukowski | 8/19/2007, 12:30 am EST

I left a KISS explanation over at Phil Spector.

VG | 8/19/2007, 1:29 am EST

I read it, Bukowski – thanks. I remember the hit song from a long time ago, but I couldn’t tell you the song titles from that KISS album. If you are a big Led Zep fan, there is a Zeppelin tribute band you may have heard, acclaimed even by Jimmy Page himself (Michael White & the White)…saw them live, and they sound close to the real thing. That’s all they do – Led Zep covers at all their shows. Check them out if they wind up in your hometown.
I have to run again…

VG | 8/19/2007, 6:52 am EST

Bukowski,
It’s important to protect your creative ideas, in music, art, writing or design. I am honest, but not everybody out there is.
~peace~
