Interpol’s Paul Banks Talks Kurt Cobain and Jackass Guitarists: Exclusive Audio

8/16/07, 4:09 pm EST

Photo: interpol

When Interpol first formed, the band’s melancholy, cavernous goth pop aligned them with an emerging breed of New York bands that were attempting to differentiate themselves from the Nu Metal masses. Nearly ten years later, Interpol have just released their third album, Our Love To Admire and are booked to play Madison Square Garden for the first time in September. Rolling Stone Associate Editor Austin Scaggs sat down with frontman Paul Banks to discuss everything from the singer-guitarist’s enduring love for Nirvana to the dangers of taking song lyrics too seriously. Here’s a bit of their interview:

  • Though he played guitar in high school, Banks couldn’t translate that skill into instant social cred: “If someone heard I played guitar, they’d be like, ‘Well, play a song,’ and it’s like, I can’t play any song except original stuff, because I never had the attention span. I’d get sidetracked, because when I heard a good interval, I’d be like, ‘Oh, fuck, I’m going to play with that,’ rather than bothering to learn anything all the way through. So I never really learned the wailing skills. I can’t just pick up a guitar and bust out the hits. But that was something I decided to be … I was humble in the schoolyard with a guitar, whereas all these other jackasses are rocking out to hits.”

  • On why he was offended by Green Day fans: “After Kurt [Cobain] died, I really resented everybody getting into Green Day. I was like, ‘A fuckin’ legend just passed, and you guys are listening to Green Day …’ I was really passionate about it.”

  • On why he makes all Interpol lyrics available online even though they aren’t included in the albums’ liner notes: “When we started going to foreign countries for the first album, people were like, ‘What the fuck are you saying?’ I felt like, ‘Oh shit, that would be a bitch, with the vocals mixed pretty low and I’m saying strange things, how are they ever going to figure out what I’m saying?’ That was when we first started putting them online. I believe people should absolutely be able to read them, I just don’t feel the need to present them in the liner notes.”

he congrats. you’re even more boring than your music

bayliss | 8/16/2007, 6:35 pm EST

worst interview in RS online history. He needs a David lee Roth
or Ted Nugent week in the woods.

yo | 8/16/2007, 7:00 pm EST

i just lost all respect for Interpol, he’s a complete moron. Green Day is a million times than Interpol will ever be. they are the most boring band of all time, guys an idiot. say goodbye to your career dumbo

bored | 8/16/2007, 7:05 pm EST

i agree with him on the green day thing. Kurt Cobain is a legand and all people could care about was some stupid little band called Green Day

hamish | 8/16/2007, 7:18 pm EST

i agree with his thoughts on playing guitar, because i was the same way. Just enjoyed playing as aposed to playing the hits.

yo, bayliss, rick | 8/16/2007, 7:21 pm EST

You are all ignorant douche bags. Green Day is pure garbage and if you don’t like Interpol, then don’t listen cocksucks. By the way their career is still on the rise.

Stalin | 8/16/2007, 7:23 pm EST

Irregardless of Cobain or Interpol,Green Day is definitely one of the most overrated and worst bands that I have ever heard.

maks | 8/16/2007, 11:10 pm EST

wow… what the fuck.. you guys are bunch of dicks sitting here bitchin about what he said. he is a famous lead to an amazing band and you guys are trashing him. who gave you the right to open your mouths. Green day was ok but they never had anything on Kurt..

Greg | 8/16/2007, 11:43 pm EST

Green Day may not be the brightest band on the scene or have an elaborated kind of music, but still, they had an important roll on bringing the punk rock to the mainstream.

P.s. Interpol is awesome. the new album is fantastic. I am an interpol kind of guy.

is summer over yet? | 8/17/2007, 1:33 am EST

“who gave you the right to open your mouths?” ??? what kind of dingdong statement is that?

you are all a bunch a school children.

irregardless isn’t a world by the way.

is summer over yet? | 8/17/2007, 1:34 am EST

word. typo.

Regal | 8/17/2007, 1:47 am EST

What’s really funny about all this is that two people have written “irregardless.”

Without lack of regard? :-O

jimbo | 8/17/2007, 3:40 am EST

hey y’all. how’s it going? green day sucks. they made a ‘concept album’ bashing bush infusing jesus with suburbia? wow, brilliance eh? i can just envision them sitting in some mansion with billie joe putting together a picture of bush and jesus and grenades, and tre cool goes “YEAH!…the people at rolling stone and everyone in california, and all those teens who hate their american suburbs and george bush and will totally dig this!”
billie joe_”Yeah! Let’s hop to it!”

theyre not the idiots though…everyone who bought into it is…

Penny Royalty | 8/17/2007, 4:09 am EST

Agreed – it’s never a good idea to diss any potential “leads”.

Michelle | 8/17/2007, 4:22 am EST

I’m not trying to go against interpol or anything because I do like some of their tunes, but that was an extremely boring interview.

ah, fckkk | 8/17/2007, 5:36 am EST

cobain is the one overrated. sure nirvana kicks ass, but that thing about peying respect to a legend’s passing… BS! did he respected you when he chose to end it all? not relevant. right? then let people listen whatever they want to.

dear ah, fck | 8/17/2007, 6:07 am EST

I’ve dropped the 2 extra “k”’s for you. How do you like that?

Stalin | 8/17/2007, 9:22 am EST

Hey Greg, Are Green Day playing punk anymore? Their sound is competely washed out. I used to like Billy Joe’s voice, but now it gets on my last fuckin’ nerve. To me they’re really just gimmicky shit.

Enjoyer | 8/17/2007, 9:49 am EST

I saw Interpol live in Paris 2 years ago : the most boring show I’ve ever seen.
Nobody in the crowd was moving.
4 static guys on stage, playing note by note their album.
Still waintin’ for Van Halen.

wray | 8/17/2007, 10:06 am EST

“greg” you’re retarded if you think green day are remotely punk…they are pop rock at best.

Ian St.Ian | 8/17/2007, 10:42 am EST

Can everyone stop using terms like “bash, slam, and nod”?It’s getting really fucking annoying.Thanks.Anyway,Interpol is actually great live,if it was boring, you probably are.

cota | 8/17/2007, 12:42 pm EST

,,,,,,so much negativity (sp?) today,,,,,,

,,,,and for all of you music know-it-alls out there, how is YOUR music career doing? Written any hit records/songs recently? No? I thought so,,,,,…Dump the piss out of your cheerios,,,,,,listen to what you want to and let others like what they like,,,,,life is way to short for all this bickering,,,,,jeesh!!!!!!

bukowski | 8/17/2007, 12:47 pm EST

Cota, what a stupid fuckin’ argument. You’re saying that the only people who can have an opinion about music have to have a successful music career? Okay, so since you have opinions on music too, where’s you music career and record deal, hmm?

Mitchapalooza | 8/17/2007, 1:03 pm EST

I saw Interpol in 2004 on the Curiosa tour. It really was a GREAT concert. Everyone was REALLY into them and the crowd gave off just immense energy. Unfortunately, based on their last two albums, I don’t think they can live up to thier first record. Turn On the Bright Lights OWNS.

ebycoisp | 8/17/2007, 2:28 pm EST

Re:Enjoyer Can I recommend a juggler you might like?

Hunter | 8/17/2007, 2:55 pm EST

Interpol is a horrible band. The lyrics written by this guy are terrible poetry. No one will give a sh*t about Interpol 10 years from now, or 5 years from now, & I can’t believe they still have fans today. With that said, I hate Green Day too, but this guy is a f**king idiot.

When Kurt Cobain died, were we all just suppose to stop listening to new music & cry for a few years? Was all new music after Cobain’s death suppose to be irrelevant just because he died? The logic of this guy is idiotic.

Also, he got it backwards when he said “a f**kin legend just died”…

Cobain didn’t become a legend until AFTER he died. Even then, it still took a few years, around 5 after Kurts death, until Nirvana started to get a lot more attention. I remember back In High School a lot of people didn’t even care about Nirvana because they were too busy listening to Korn (also, like Interpol & Green Day, a horrible band)

ian curtis | 8/17/2007, 2:58 pm EST

“you are all a bunch a school children.” agreed.
everyone on here is just mad because they’re on punishment and mom won’t let them play Xbox.

Bukowski | 8/17/2007, 4:59 pm EST

Ian Curtis, what’s this shit of coming on this thread and just making a blanket criticism of every one? Shut up!

Trance | 8/18/2007, 1:44 am EST

all you guys are making about as much sense as a bag of dicks

bukowski | 8/18/2007, 2:37 am EST

A bag of dicks?

majik | 8/18/2007, 4:05 am EST

how about a bag of tricks?

taylor | 8/18/2007, 2:13 pm EST

“One mustn’t criticize other people on grounds where he can’t stand perpendicular himself”

i agree with some people on this board, i love all 3 bands mentioned in the article. but if you dont like interpol why are you coming onto their post to blantantly disrespect them. interpol is one of the best bands out there and for everyone who is criticizing them fuck you i will listen to you if you record a song and post it somewhere…. send me a link ill listen then i will take your criticism into account. but if you guys cant realize that there is good in all music and are not willing to accept that then you truly are arrogant ass holes.

mel* | 8/18/2007, 2:22 pm EST

Open mind!! & relax

Check it | 8/18/2007, 3:26 pm EST

If there was an interview of Nikki Sixx (for example)I simply wouldn’t click on the link to listen to it…why? Because I don’t give a fuck about Nikki Sixx. So who the fuck wants to read about what Paul Banks’ thinks if they don’t give a shit to begin with? And then….to make a post about how much they think he’s a fuckin idiot. I wish I could fly to your homes like on Jay and Silent Bob and beat the fuck out of ya.

kurts_grunge_girl | 8/18/2007, 3:38 pm EST

hey HUNTER your retarded. Okay first in 1991 Kurt Cobain became a legend when Nirvana came out with Nevermind. When he died he was a legend and his legacy still lives on. I think you are just jelouse because your prolly in a little sissy band that would never match with Nirvana. You need to get you history right.Kurt Cobain was a great person i met him and he was everything you wish you were, but to bad that you will never be that kind of man. And for the rest of you who dont like Kurt…I hope you get mobbed to death by millions of screaming Nirvana fans. That is the only way to justify your death.

!dawg | 8/18/2007, 6:09 pm EST

love me some paul banks ;)

rick | 8/18/2007, 8:15 pm EST

Irregardless of Cobain or Interpol”

Is irregardless even a word?

regardless....or........ | 8/18/2007, 8:50 pm EST

Main Entry: ir·re·gard·less
Pronunciation: “ir-i-’gärd-l&s
Function: adverb
Etymology: probably blend of irrespective and regardless
nonstandard : REGARDLESS
usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

bukowski | 8/18/2007, 10:54 pm EST

Yeah, irregardless is a word. I guess words that you’ve never heard before aren’t words. There are 263,000 words in the English language. Happy hunting!

dudes | 8/19/2007, 2:01 am EST

the bottom line is that interpol and no one gives a crap about them. this dudes interview is almost as boring as their music, and i’ve seen them live (not by choice) and they were awful. i almost fell asleep. GREEN DAY RULES, UR ALL IDIOTS

bukowski | 8/19/2007, 4:23 am EST

You’re right, Dude! You’re smarter than the rest of us, so you win the grand prize! You stand against that wall while the rest of us throw rocks at your head, until you’re stone cold dead! Everybody ready? On the count of 3: 1. . .2. . .3!!! . . .Rest In Pieces, Dude.

cota | 8/19/2007, 1:14 pm EST

hey bukowski,,,,,

I’m not arguing. I don’t have a music career.But, I do know a negative remark when I see one.

As far as my statement, its along the line of,,,,”dont worry, be happy”!! Listen to what you want to and let others like what they like,,,,,it is called freedom of choice, try it, it is fun!!

And as far as my opinions go,,,,read what you are replying to,,,,I’m not giving an opinion about any band, Interpol or other,,simply making a suggestion to enjoy life,,,something you seem to have missed. Is that a little more clear?

AY7 | 8/19/2007, 2:03 pm EST

cota,
I also read your comment on this post…your statement was: “and for all of you music know-it-alls out there, how is YOUR music career doing? Written any hit records/songs recently? No? I thought so”.
Your statment does come across as being condescending. I’m not a “musician” myself (although I am an artist of sorts), but I know, understand and appreciate enough about music to have an intelligent conversation about it. So in a way, you have made a general assumption. Everyone does have the “freedom” to offer their own opinion, regardless of exactly who they are or what they do.

kat | 8/19/2007, 2:11 pm EST

Didn’t Green Day jump on the bandwagon with their “political agenda” now? They are pop music. Get over it! If you people hate interpol so much why are you even listening to Paul Bank’s interview? Green Day does not have the depth interpol has. Sorry if you people don’t get it.

AY7 | 8/19/2007, 2:21 pm EST

Let us try this again,,,,,”If you can not find a nice word to say, why say anything at all?”

Really folks, is it so wrong to make a suggestion that looking at life in a positive light is much better and easier (sp?)?

…and as far as being condescending (huh?),,,,my statements are kinda like telling someone to clean up their own back yard before commenting on others,,,

bukowski | 8/20/2007, 1:18 pm EST

If you don’t have anything nice to say anything at all. Hmmm. . .a statement like that sounds exactly like what it is: a shortcut to thinking. What you’re really saying is: If you have an opinion don’t say anything. I hate to inform you of this, but the whole purpose of these threads are for PEOPLE’S OPINIONS! Good or bad. Live with it.

pLaNeTcArR | 8/20/2007, 3:42 pm EST

cota,
Stating an opinion isn’t always going to be necessarily “nice”. Who gave you that advice – your mother? Get a backbone, and worry about your own backyard.

Cota, who do you think you are? The Pilsbury Dough Boy?

JOn gutner | 8/21/2007, 12:32 pm EST

Interpol are the best band on the block as of now, imo.

Greenday had one good album, Dookie. It was fun and quirky.

Interpol have re-hashed a dead scene. Mix cure with Janes addiction and Joy Division and you have interpol, also add some more rugged melodies to the mix.

Green Day are shit now, they’re cry-me-a-river song ballads reminds me of poison during it’s final hours.

cota | 8/21/2007, 1:05 pm EST

hey AY7,,,,,,if you like to wallow in negative shit, feel free and knock yourself out,,,I could care less, I personally enjoy the beauty that life has to offer, so if that makes me the Pillsburry Dough Boy or Mister Rogers, so be it. I have pride in the fact that I can find the silver lineing (sp?) in almost any dark cloud,,,,,,,,,,,,

Bobby McFerrin | 8/21/2007, 2:00 pm EST

Cota, You’re getting on my last nerve, ok? You’re about as deep as water in an ice cube tray.

Toot the horn | 8/21/2007, 2:09 pm EST

Mike, what a great fuckin’ line. Thank you, Bukowski. Coming from a literary god like you, that’s a huge compliment. Don’t mention it, kid.

AY7 | 8/21/2007, 2:25 pm EST

Cota,
There’s a big dark thundercloud hovering over you right now, which is about to downpour and toss you into a pile of shit.

AY7 | 8/21/2007, 2:36 pm EST

Cota,
I don’t care.

To Cota from Candy-o | 8/21/2007, 5:37 pm EST

Those who are sickingly sticky-sweet, such as you are, Cota, are often shallow-minded and have something to hide…(Oh, the guilt)…
…and don’t assume that you have the right to prejudge me (or anyone else for that matter).

£ | 8/22/2007, 10:54 pm EST

OLTA isn’t selling much better than Antics despite debuting eleven spots higher on the chart. It was interesting to learn Matador was communicating with the band right up until they signed with Capitol. Anyone know how much Interpol’s advance was and has it been paid in full?

ugh | 8/23/2007, 2:52 pm EST

Cota,

You are an idiot. Your stupid punctuation is totally annoying, but even that is eclipsed by your ignorant, stupid, and nonsensical statements.

If the message you were trying to send was “if you don’t have something nice to say…” and “don’t worry, be happy.” You went about it the wrong way when you said “and for all of you music know-it-alls out there, how is YOUR music career doing? Written any hit records/songs recently? No? I thought so,,,,,…”

I am not surprised that you don’t find that statement purposely insulting, because you are clearly very dumb, but newsflash–it is.

“and as far as being condescending (huh?),,,,”

Condescending is a word! Yeah! Look it up!

Furthermore, this is a site about Interpol, a band that makes great music. I don’t understand why a bunch of people who supposedly hate the band even bothered to look at it, but I can assume their lives are even more pathetic than Cota’s.

Constance | 8/24/2007, 9:37 pm EST

Wow, this is a great find. I never came across this particular interview before. I can understand what he said about Green Day. Obviously, a lot of people feel the same way. It’s funny because Interpol and Green Day are my two most favorite bands in the world. Hehe. Granted, I can relate more to Interpol lyrics and their sound is more cohesive with my personality as a whole. I also noticed that Pauk said that he was offended by Green Day FANS, not the band. I agree with him.

Green day has some ok songs. Why bitch about interpol? They are amazing! Besides Paul Banks is the sexiest guy alive!

gael | 8/25/2007, 7:38 pm EST

i don’t think he’s bashing green day at all, it’s obvious nirvana meant a great deal to him and, he was just upset that everyone moved on so fast; which is a logical reaction.

and as far as the interview being boring, the questions aren’t that interesting in the first place -so it’s not really his fault.

On the whole green day dispute,Paul says NOTHING about the band, onli its fans! And the whole boring interview thing is the interviewers fault,Paul can onli answer the questions he asked

tyler | 12/6/2007, 1:23 am EST

Interpol is a semi revelation in modern music its own right (in a small way), started in a lot the same sense as other nyc bands, paul’s influences are the basis’s of his life experiences. The part of the interview I can relate best to, is how he learned guitar, it wasn’t by learning to play songs, he learned three chords and started putting together his own ideas from bits and pieces of songs, I lack the attention as well, he got humbly started, and then his ideas grew from there. Obviously when interpol was formed his sonic range of ideas expanded. I think that is so interesting, I rarely ever hear of someone who learns that way, I mean I am no good at guitar, but to me that’s interesting to know paul from my favorite band learned this way…

Otherwise interpol is something that has grown from an experiment it seems, from all i’ve gathered of knowledge about interpol, they grouped up all these members learned their own way, they were on a different page, and it took them awhile to get with it, and how they’ve come about is just awesome, its a mini musical revolution, I wish I knew more bands that came together like that, I mean anyone can say, sure a million bands come together like that, but what I mean is that they weren’t friends, they were just business, they all played music, and decided form it, but every member of the band is so unique, and paul’s addition is just one fourth of the aspect of this great band interpol (in my opinion) some just cannot relate at all to the musical sound or lyrics, its just of their preference, everyone clicks with different music, I think it’s about everyone’s interpretation of what music should ideally be, and its that, in which forms personal preferences, I agree with a lot of people here, yes we should defend our beliefs, but to cause ridiculous arguments over it, is simply retarded in my opinion, music is one of the most argued of personal beliefs or preferences of anything, period. Its just pointless to waste energy trying to convince someone of your personal like, I say mingle with the people that share your interest, and leave be those who don’t agree alone, same goes for everyone. I do think it is rather stupid for people to find this topic, and bash it, as if to feel any better or try to convince someone, or prove some stupid ass ignorant bullshit. Some people like to fuck with people, its their little gig. I think this interview is one of the more in depth, even though short, it’s more detailed in a certain aspect, to paul’s like for nirvana, and how it influenced or pertained to him. I mean everyone figures out music eventually fairly young in their life, some take it to heart, and want to make it their passion, sometimes it’s even accidental. The point is, paul banks is just one member of interpol, and for this interview he just wanted to spill some beans on things, not really open up for ridiculous stupid shit judgments, we all get judged, but do it in a feasible manner, don’t be fucking moron about it, hold your ill educated small time bullshit to your self, otherwise I think its always open for debate, but who I am to judge, this is just an opinion, and I don’t plan to shove it down your fucking throat, and I don’t think I know it all, or any other shit, this is just an opinion like I said.

Peace with all.

Kendall | 4/17/2008, 3:12 pm EST

The bottomline here is: A) Nirvana was overated and unduly credited for the alternative explosion in the early nineties (Janes Addiction was ten times the band musically and creatively and did it 5 years before Nirvana B) Green Day? Nothing more than pop-punk that filled a void after Cobain died C) Interpol is one of the best bands of the decade, hands down. Crisp, soulful and moving. Not nessecarily original, but who cares. Everything is derivative these days, its all been done in some form or fashion.

Interpol are a pretty amazing band. Paul Banks plays chords that make my fingers bleed…I wonder how many of the commentators above saying shit know how to play a single chord.
