Cat Power has been in Brooklyn, Miami and Dallas studios recording two new albums of cover songs with Stuart Sikes (and a band consisting of drummer Jim White, keyboardist Greg Foreman, guitarist Judah Bauer and bassist Greg Paparazzi). On what’s tentatively titled The Covers Record II (due in January), Chan Marshall takes on Joni Mitchell’s “Blue,” the Highwaymen’s “Silver Stallion,” Hot Boys’ “I Feel,” Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son,” Jessie Mae Hemphill’s “Lord Help the Poor and Needy,” Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You,” and a duet with Shane MacGowan on the Irish traditional “The Auld Triangle.” On 2000’s The Covers Record she memorably interpreted the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction” and songs by Moby Grape and the Velvet Underground.

And in the fall, Cat Power will get a chance to rest out some of these tunes on a short tour during which she’ll be backed by the Memphis Rhythm Band, the group of musicians that played on tours for her 2006 album The Greatest. Keep reading for the full list of tour dates:

I think Cat Power’s cover version of David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity,’ heard on the MKS car comercial is terrific. I just wish they recorded a full version of the song. Bowie’s version is the best, but this one is a close second. The Marauders and Natalie Merchant have pretty good versions as well.

Cat Power is grossly erroneous in claiming “Lord Help the Poor and Needy” is a public domain song (hello, try googling?). The song is in fact written by Jessie Mae Hemphill, who owns the copyright. Let’s hope this was just a huge mistake and not a publishing dodge.

Anyone who likes Michael Bolton must have the IQ of a grapefruit.

Her new backing band is called Dirty Delta Blues not Memphis Rhythm Band , that was a different band completely.
and If anyone cares… Cat Power has written about 6 records of original material dating back 14 years or so..
..also why does the average commenter here have the IQ of a grapefruit

Ugh…another artist doing cover songs! It seems the artists of today cannot write their material these days.

jungleland-
Cat Power doesn’t get you. So move on… but here’s a hint if you want to keep trying.
…Think of a ink-blot…
Now, add some emotional baggage, like maybe the LIFE you live. Pay close attention, and let the sound envelope you.
That’s Cat Power in the middle there. Singing.
CHeeRs.

I’m with Greg. Put her of the cover sometime. And how come Wilco has never made it?

Greg Locke | 8/17/2007, 8:42 am EST

So put her … or someone whose actually going to matter in 15 years … on one of your fucking covers already. You guys should be ashamed of the current cover.

Michelle | 8/17/2007, 4:25 am EST

Paul Koffer | 8/17/2007, 3:16 am EST

Wow! That’s Hot Boys as in Lil Wayne & Juvenile & Turk & B.G. Certainly looking forward to that “cover.” This promises to be one of the highlights of 2008, as any recent Cat Power album has been in its respective year. Any European tour dates?

that’s JESSIE MAE HEMPHILL’s “Lord Help the Poor and Needy.” Rolling Stone should have some repect for the dead. The She Wolf is probably rolling in her grave…….

tingle flinger | 8/16/2007, 7:20 pm EST
