Gadget Envy: Sansa Connect Wi-Fi Digital Audio Player

What It Is: A Zune-killing, credit-card sized, Wi-Fi-enabled digital audio player that lets you download subscription and purchased tracks off of Yahoo! Music Unlimited.

Who It’s For: Anyone who wants to save money on music for their portable — legally — as well as existing Yahoo! Music Unlimited subscribers ($8.99 per month for all-you-can-eat music tracks à la Napster, Rhapsody and Urge).

Why It’s Worthy: The Sansa Connect’s cartoonish interface that’s maneuvered around using a responsive jog dial couldn’t be any easier to use. Besides a choice of more than two million songs to download right to your player, you can listen to LaunchCast Internet radio (and download tracks you hear there) or access your (or other people’s) Flickr photos with just a couple of clicks.

Our Only Complaint: While the themed browsing (Most Popular Songs, By Genre, etc.) is as fun as flipping through a good jukebox, the unit could use a plain old search feature to make it truly versatile.

Where To Get It: $249 (4GB) at sandisk.com; (requires $8.99 per month Yahoo! Music Unlimited Subscription, music.yahoo.com).

Why would I spend $250 for only 4GB of space when I get so much more on other MP3 players? Why would I spend $9 a month for Yahoo’s streaming music service when there are many thousands of internet radio stations out there for free?
Answer: I wouldn’t.
Like I said, cool idea but far from a killer product.
(Al, you are a retard.)

Jim, just what in the fuck are you talkin’ about?

Small storage space limits how many songs you can carry with you so streaming is probably your best bet for music variety. Being limited to only using Launchcast for streaming audio is also very limiting. There is a whole world of free internet radio out there you just can’t get to with this device. Cool concept and cool product but too limiting.

advertising can be subliminal, but it has to be well thought-out.

shouldn’t advertisments be marked as such?
