Wu-Tang Clan Cover the Beatles With Help From George Harrison’s Son, John Frusciante

During an interview Friday, Wu-Tang Clan mastermind RZA let us in on a hit tip: Wu-Tang are taking on the Beatles. Due November 13th, the Clan’s upcoming fifth album, 8 Diagrams, has a track RZA is currently calling “Gently Weeps.” It features a sample of the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” which is cool enough. But what’s even cooler is the fact that Wu-Tang’s cover of the song features Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante on lead guitar and Dhani Harrison, George Harrison’s twenty-nine-year-old son, on acoustic. “He’s the biggest Wu-Tang fan in the world,” RZA says of Harrison, whom RZA called in for the session. “He knew all the kung fu shit [we reference]! That’s deep! I told him I would be honored if he played his father’s song.” The Wu song, which RZA says is about the destructive power of heroin, features Wu-Tang rapping over the band’s cover of the Beatles track. Method Man plays a smack addict, while Ghostface Killah plays a dope dealer and, in RZA’s words, lays down “one of the best lyrics I’ve ever heard him say.”

$rolesevrethngarowndme | 3/25/2008, 2:14 am EST

wow, you’ve all lost your minds. wu-tang is dope, of course, but frusciante is one of the best guitarists of all time, and thats not even a question. why else would rza lay him down of his tracks. ya’ll lost the point. and p.s. the chili peppers are the greatest band of my time(im 22 years old), and frusciante si a major reason for that

i think we all know that rhcp has some good songs but the newest album is corny as fuck. maybe frusciantes talents have been wasted, maybe not (personally i liked dave navarro better - aeroplane is my shit) but anyyyway-the wu song is more than legit and its nice to see rock and rap coming together for the sick fusion guitar bass beat of The Heart Gently Weeps

Revilo | 1/25/2008, 11:24 am EST

Ytzak: “RHCP are the corniest band of all time, though. I will say that John Frusciante is a great guitarist whose talents were wasted in the Chili Peppers.”
- WHAT THE HELL?…………………

Jon | 12/8/2007, 6:15 pm EST

this song is pretty sick- they rips this shit right here

Marc | 11/6/2007, 4:48 pm EST

This tune is off the hook, I’ve always been a huge fan of the wu-tang clan, the beatles and an even bigger fan of the chili peppers so it feels like this song was written for me, just perfect.

OMG this seems to be great are RHCP making a new album with those guys or is it just the guitarist John Frusciante who are going to help them play or is it the whole band? Please tell me ? and if someone knows if chili peppers are making a new album, so please tell me.”
OMFG how stupid can u get, READ THE FUGGIN ARTICLE! THE ANSWER TO UR QUESTION IS RIGHT THERE! Its just John on the new Wu album, has nothing to do with the fuggin peppers, christ almighty!

Cred | 11/4/2007, 1:45 pm EST

The Beatles are the biggest rock band who ever exsist. But the biggest rock band right now is the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I love the chili peppers and they are making so good music. Flea one of the best basist player in the world whos still alive same as John.

i cannot believe the variety of comments on this Wu/Dhani/Frusc issue- i have an in on all 3 and feel this would be a once in a lifetime endeavour- i remember george upping bob and the wailers in the 70’s, lighten up peeps-it’s only rock and roll

LUKE | 11/2/2007, 7:31 am EST

FIRST U AINT GOT A CLEW IF U THINK THE WU HASNT MADE ANYTHINK GOOD AFTER 2000, U AINT LOOKIN IN THE RIGHT PLACE AND AMANDA SOUNDS LIKE MY SOUL MATE ITS TO HARD TO COME BY A LADY DATS DEEP WU TANG IS NOT JUST A WAY OF LIFE ITS MINE WU TANG FOREVER

Amanda | 10/29/2007, 9:22 pm EST

RZA, the man is amazing…Wu is amazing…I am looking forward to a CD that is actually worth paying $20 for,….WU, The Beatles, Chili Peppers….November 13th can’t get here quick enough!!!

I am a rock fan, but have had a love affair with hip hop for many years. I know a true hip hop artist when he/she knows (in depth) other generes of music and understands their qualitites, and appreciates them!!I listen to some of the shit that is realeased in the so called hip hop scene nowadays and wanna puke. So yes RZA how can hip hop be dead when Wu is forever? It’s not dead she’s just slumbering and/or lost her way, so wake it up and help her find herself again!!

Ytzak | 10/4/2007, 10:58 am EST

Beatles are the greatest rock band of all time, of course. Wu Tang is the greatest hip hop outfit of all time as well. RHCP are the corniest band of all time, though. I will say that John Frusciante is a great guitarist whose talents were wasted in the Chili Peppers. What really bugs me, though, is that it seems like RZA lost his edge. This beat has been floating around for years, and it’s not even close to being among his best. Is the final Wu album really going to have this Borders-friendly yawn? At least the “Watch Your Mouth” track that leaked still provides hope.

stupid-kills | 9/17/2007, 5:24 pm EST

Some of you (those badmouthing music collaborations like this, especially you Reg. you’re a huge dipshit) provide the best explanation about why people (and the music industry) seem to be getting more and more stupid. First of all change is inevitable, when has music ever stayed the same…never? that’s what I thought. Also, your ignorance, (Harrison’s rolling over in his grave…dur) is what keeps you listening to the same shit over and over and over again, and makes you no better than those piece of shit commercial rappers. If any of you haters could read, you would see that the song conatains an anti-heroin message. Wu-Tang, RHCP and Beatles forever.

ZenMasta | 9/15/2007, 5:30 pm EST

This is so amazing…
I love wu tang
I love the beatles
I love the chili peppers

Another sign how even our favorite artists of truly good music even respect one another. It just feels like we’re all part of the same community of real fans of music.

Sunzgawd | 9/3/2007, 8:32 am EST

Some people have no idea about hiphop, rock and roll and where it was originated. First off Beattles, Elvis, Eric Clapton the stones etc and a majority of the white singers and bands stole ideas, sound etc from the black artists back in the days. That is 200% true. Eric Clapton and The stones completely admit that. Elvis stole the moves etc from the black artist and then they call him the king of rock and roll. What a flippin joke. I don’t want to make this a black and white issue because it is not. But the truth must be told and the blinders must be taken off.

Hiphop was originated from Jamaica and they called it TOAST. This is where a DJ would be saying things/rhyming over the mike while the DJ was playing the “Sound”. People need to dig deeper and find out where the style of music came from before they make off the wall comments. All forms of music originated from some where some where. Wutang will not butcher the beattles song at all, and if you don’t know wutang listen to 36 chambers, Raekwons Only built for Cuban linx, Gza’s liquid swords and Wutang Forever. These guys where talking about stuff way before it happen. Granted most of the stuf you hear today on the radio is just pure garbage. However I guarntee that these cats will definitely open your eyes with their music.

Peace

fairly cultured | 8/26/2007, 4:40 pm EST

to dirk diggler:

true music comes from an artists feelings and their reflections on life.

it’s the same thing the beatles did. especially john lennon. they wrote about war, losing a loved one, the hippie nation and all its wonders.

just because it’s a different generation doesn’t mean they didn’t have the same inspiration.

fairly cultured | 8/26/2007, 4:37 pm EST

p.s.

artists who have something to say don’t care whether they make high sales or not. they just want their music to be heard and the message to be shared.

that’s what i like about most old school hiphop groups. they don’t care as much about the bling. that’s not what hiphop is about.

fairly cultured | 8/26/2007, 4:34 pm EST

i honor true rock and roll and hiphop. some people think that these two music forms are complete opposites…in reality…both are meaningful and draw influence on each other.

rage against the machine covers hiphop songs and turns them into hardcore rock songs, jazz artists such as jamie cullum covers radiohead, why not let wu-tang cover the beatles?

wu-tang is not like the mainstream hiphop on the radio who butchers legendary songs. they are one of the great hiphop artists that actually have something valuable to say. we should thank them for exposing hiphop fans to beatles music. then that thought of clashing between the two music forms may be reunited.

i went to both rock the bells and coachella and those two were the most diverse crowds i have ever witnessed at a concert.

fairly cultured | 8/26/2007, 4:26 pm EST

the decline in music sales is not due to artists sampling or covering older songs. it’s because of technology. it is so easy to download and share music for free.

if anything, covering or sampling an older song adds popularity to both the newer and older version. music fans tend to lean toward a familiar sound…which is why even the new mainstream hiphop like sean kingston and akon (whom i think should die by the way for the crap they are exploiting) gain widespread recognition.

EDIT | 8/22/2007, 11:33 am EST

What the Fu#k is wrong with you people. As far as i see it…Hip hop is one of the last true art forms. What do you people listen to? some fat ass hillbilly singing about how america is so great? If you think George Harrison would be rolling over in his grave then you are culturally ignorant. As a matter of fact, you’re probably just a racist jackass. I can agree that your mainstream hip hop these days is horrible to listen to but wu-tang?…come on man. Turn off your radio and suck my ballz.

Hey Scott, I’ll let you in on a little secret: hip-hop blows!

Scott | 8/15/2007, 7:51 pm EST

“stop either ripping off or covering songs”? Hip hop is directly derived from the idea of taking a sound, reappropriating it, changing it, and making it something else entirely. Hip hop has become wattered down as it has become mainstream. Declining sales figures are due to sue happy artists who file a law suit against a rapper for using a one second drum loop from an album they made 25 years ago. Every rapper out there should sample every famous song ever made, whatever the consequence. That’s hip hop.

SVUF | 8/15/2007, 10:38 am EST

I wish that all the musicians of today would stop either ripping off or covering songs from the older ones!! I think that is part of the reason for the declining sales figures of all types of music!!

Dirk Diggler | 8/14/2007, 9:27 pm EST

Wu tang were influenced by their surroundings that included criminal activity that comes through their “art.” Okay, great can they fuckin’ move on and start wrting about something else! The reason they stay with this gansta mentality is because it sells records. Period. End of Story.

Russian Roulette | 8/14/2007, 5:23 pm EST

Wu Tang Klan Covers the Beatles. . .SFX: spinning chambers. . .BANG!

I’m not going to sit here and argue semantics with you about what “cool” is; I believe the Average White Band already did that.

Swingline | 8/14/2007, 1:31 pm EST

“Listening to and enjoying music about crime and prostitution is not cool.”

Just curious, what is cool? Would it be whiny and retarded lyrics about insecurity or blindly optimistic songs about puppy love?

Cool’s standing on your own two feet and moving forward without asking permission. The Wu aren’t endorsing crime, they were raised all around it, and that’s what helps influence their art and their message.

MW | 8/14/2007, 12:54 pm EST

Can’t wait for Dhani’s cd to come out with his band thenewno2,I love what I’ve heard of their music so far.

Power Universal | 8/14/2007, 12:50 pm EST

I get why some people are disgusted by the idea of a rap group covering a Beatles song, but Wu Tang isn’t your normal rap group. This is not 50 Cent or P.Diddy or 99% of the other terrible rap acts out thier. They actually have talent and put thought into their music. RZA, (pictured above) plays piano, violin, and composed music. He has done scores for several films including Kill Bill. This isn’t some no talented homgonized mainstream rapper ripping off a Beatles tune. Frusciante has said in interviews that Wu Tang’s first album had a huge influence on his playing and sound in general. Listen to some early Wu Tang before you rush to judgement.

Dr. Benway | 8/14/2007, 12:37 pm EST

just had to ask; did David Lee Roth suffer the same face freezing accident as The Joker? and when did Rosie O’donnel take over for Mike Anthony? there wasn’t a place for comment under the Van Halen pictures.

Zack Starkey | 8/14/2007, 12:37 pm EST

Julian, Sean, Mary, Dhani, call me. We have a serious problem. People are shitting all over our cash cow. We gonna stand for this? Anyone WRITING songs nowadays?

RIP-OFF | 8/14/2007, 12:29 pm EST

A hip hop group rapping about drugs while sampling a classic song…now this is groundbreaking. I have never heard of such an original idea

George Harrison | 8/14/2007, 12:27 pm EST

….rolling over..

Chamber Master | 8/14/2007, 12:24 pm EST

This’ll be cool, I would say it’ll be similar to the track “I Can’t Go To Sleep” from ‘The W,’ which samples “Walk On By” by Isaac Hayes (I think that’s the one anyway, the one I’m thinking of might be a different track, but it’s definetely on ‘The W’).

As for the statement that post 2000 The Wu haven’t been up to standard, that’s true (except for ‘Supreme Clientele’ and ‘The W,’ plus some of ‘Iron Flag’), but is only because the RZA hasn’t been in charge.

Check out Wutangcorp.com for the free ‘Chamber Of Fear’ and ‘When You Get Out Of Jail’ downloads to see that the RZA is still on form post 2000, but only when he wants to be.

James | 8/14/2007, 12:15 pm EST

Sounds excellent. Wu Tan is one of the only rap groups that actually have talent and aren’t afraid to do new and different things. Every other rap artist just copies one another. Hip Hop is dead.

Beatle6769 | 8/14/2007, 12:11 pm EST

Interesting… I guess Frusciante is the new clapton? Anyway, whether or not the track will be any good (which i think it will, people dont do the bealtes everyday) it was touching that they brought in Dhani to play it. I don’t think he’d let his fathers masterpiece go down in flames, either.

Bobby Digital | 8/14/2007, 11:58 am EST

Wu Tang is one of the only Hip Hop groups that even matters. Their first two albums were classics, all their early solo projects were great, but everything post 2000 pretty much sucked like the rest of hip hop. Hopefully this album will be different.

Let’s get shizzled by fizzles!

Maybe Run DMC can make a comeback by remixing the tracks off of GNR’s Chinese Democrappy!

‘IGHT!!!

Ta Ta Toothy | 8/14/2007, 11:29 am EST

LOL. Dhani Harrison is the “biggest Wu-Tang fan in the world,” according to RZA. That’s a good one.

Reg | 8/14/2007, 11:09 am EST

I agree, Betty. That title is misleading.

I hope this article is misleading, too. Listening to and enjoying music about crime and prostitution is not cool.

Hip hop sucks.

Swingline | 8/14/2007, 10:50 am EST

Too bad something like this seems to happen only once every 5 years. Rock and hip-hop need to bridge more gaps to each other as both genres are being watered down with a bunch of soulless predictable garbage.

This is the kinda stuff I wish these one hit wonder rappers would get through their thick skulls. Every interview I read with successful rappers at least has one mention of their affinity for rock music.

With that title i almost thought that RS was saying John Frusciante is George Harison’s son. Where have i been?
