Don Henley Talks New Eagles LP

8/13/07, 5:49 pm EST

Photo: eagles
When the Eagles last got back together it was 1994, and Don Henley shared his sentiments with the world by naming their live album Hell Freezes Over. Now we’re two short months from a new Eagles album — their first studio release in twenty-eight years – only this time, Henley saw it coming. Performing at one of his West Coast solo dates in Primm, Nevada, on Saturday, the Eagles drummer delivered a powerful two-hour set on guitar, playing some obligatory hits (“Boys of Summer,” “All She Wants to Do Is Dance”) and other unexpected favorites, including an acoustic “The End of the Innocence” and mesmerizing “Hotel California.”

Backstage before the show, Henley also talked openly for the first time about the new Eagles disc (slated to hit stores in October) as they prepare for their only six performances of 2007 — two of which will take place October 18th and 20th at the premiere of the new Nokia Theater L.A. Live. “They say everything in life is a matter of timing,” Henley said. “And the time seems right for us to do this.” Henley explained that other pursuits — including raising their children and working on their solo careers — have kept the Eagles from “doing this” sooner. “I think it’s okay to go away for a while,” he explained. “We’ve had some conflict within the group, and in terms of songwriting and recording, we just didn’t feel like it up until now.”

The disc they will release in October, tentatively titled Long Road Out of Eden, has finally brought the group back to the studio. Recorded over the last few years in an undisclosed L.A. studio, Henley confirmed that the album will be distributed exclusively through Wal-Mart for the first twelve months. “People will be getting value for their money,” Henley said. The band recorded around twenty songs for the effort.

The Eagles, who have had one of the fiercest love/hate relationships in rock & roll, broke up in 1981. (One infamous conflict that led to the split came in 1980; while onstage at a concert in Long Beach, California, Glenn Frey and Don Felder allegedly spent the night threatening to kick each other’s asses backstage.) “It may never be like it was in the past,” Henley said, but he’s proud to be part of “a band who knows when to sit one out … creatively, it was our time to get back in the studio,” he added.

I see they have a new album. Good for them! I didn’t realize they could still play…

As the economist/comedian Ben Stein said, “When Wal-Mart opens in your town, everyone gets a raise.” It’s that simple! I’m on a fixed income and my dollar goes further at Wal-Mart. You don’t have to like it but it’s true. I’m more pissed at all the other stores (supermarkets, mom & pops, department stores, etc.) that have been gouging me for years. Plain & simple.

Birdlady5 | 11/26/2007, 3:16 pm EST

Shame on the Eagles. I’ve been a fan for years and here they have an exclusive contract with Wal-Mart. A corporation who has two Super Stores 20 blocks from eachother in OUR TOWN. They ship our jobs to other countries, destroy workers’ rights, steal our tax paying dollars in subsidies, close down mom/pop businesses, promote slave labor, sell poisonous products with lead, etc. in them.

Sorry Eagles I won’t be buying your CD. I will not step foot in a store or on their website that enslaves humanity and buries us in cheap junk to further pollute the world.

Creating art usually makes a statement and the Eagles’ statement is consumerism and waste is what our youth should embrace.

It’s a sad day when artists favor greed over saving lives.

reluctant king | 11/22/2007, 1:07 pm EST

you should all just buy a Gene Clark cd instead…

BOSS stang | 11/14/2007, 9:13 pm EST

WTF ?
I continue to be floored by all of this inane B.S. Buy or Don’t buy … shop at Wally world or Don’t!!! Yeesh! This is worse than the Peace-niks in the 60’s !!! If you don’t want to buy the freakin’ album … it may give you more bread to donate towards that “WOODSTOCK MUSEUM” …What a bunch of whiners !!! FIND A LIFE OR A CAUSE THAT REALLY MATTERS !!!

Mikel | 11/10/2007, 1:57 am EST

I see Don Henley at the Beverly Hills Walmart all the time. Like so many of use, he’s having a tough time and wants to save a couple of bucks so he can remodel the estate and keep gas in the Bentley. They can rot in hell. At best, Henley’s a fvcking hypocrite.

daisyduke | 11/7/2007, 11:42 pm EST

You Walmart lovers are boneheads… don’t you know that each time a Walmart comes to town, another independent record store closes? That’s why you can’t find a record store, there are none because Walmart swallowed everything up and will continue until every inch of our soil is covered with their superstores. Watch the Walmart the Movie by Robert Greenwald and find out the real reason it’s so cheap to shop at walmart.

ebster | 11/7/2007, 11:12 pm EST

I was a life long fan on the Eagles - love them together and indivually. But, I will never buy another album, nor will I spend another dime to see them now that they’ve sold out to Walmart. Bad choice boys, making a deal with the devil because you believe the evil corporation is environmentally friendly. Ha! While Walmart sells your cd’s for cheap, their employees draw welfare and medicare because Walmart doesn’t take care of their people. They come to small town America and drive out the little mom and pop shops. Nice going boys, now your greed shines through!!

Increasingly, it’s looking like Neil Young is the only musician of my generation with any integrity left.

daelin | 10/21/2007, 6:52 pm EST

After hearing Hell Freezes Over and knowing some of the older material, I felt like their two new songs really weren’t that good. At least not when compared to their bigger hits. When no other albums surfaced in the last 10 years, I figured that the Eagles were done.

Walmart kept having all these signs saying that the Eagles’s new CD was coming out but figured it would be as bad as “Get Over It”

This song has a pleasant surprise. It actually sounds like they worked together to make this one and took the time to make it as good as some of their older songs.

The only bad thing I see is that there are 20 songs on it. Usually albums with that many songs on it tend to have a lot of filler. It’s not that important to fill up a CD to 74 or 80 minutes if the material isn’t that good. Only one band I’ve ever heard can do that and that’s Dream Theater.

Still, for $10/$11, I’ll probably end up picking it up. It’s not a bad price for a few good songs.

Eagles Rule | 10/13/2007, 10:07 pm EST

I commend the Eagles for making their music available for the lowest price. If you can’t pay for your music then you have no integrity. Artists must be paid for their work. Screw the record companies as they’ve done to some many musicians. Furthermore, Wal-Mart only gives America what it wants.

First single from the new Eagles album is ‘How Long’: a cover from a J.D. (!) Souther-album from 1972, with guitars from… Glen Frey.

About the Walmart thing, people make a fuss over nothing like complaining if your ice cream is cold. Who cares ? Too many downloads is whats killing record stores not walmart! If you really love the eagles you will buy it at walmart. All these people making a fuss over walmart don’t really like the Eagles ya know!

dano | 9/29/2007, 1:06 am EST

First of all i don’t know anyone who doesn’t like the eagles. Rock and roll country rock, balads , they have it all! I was at a party one time and my friends sons came out and brought out their gheto blaster, they were 16 years old. i couldn’t believe they knew every word in the songs and were singing along. The eagles music transends time even today. If you really apreciate music you will like the Eagles. ROCK ON !!!

Will | 9/11/2007, 12:54 pm EST

Fuck wal-mart and fuck the eagles. I used to think you guys were cool. what happened?

The Eagles | 9/7/2007, 10:10 am EST

I am an Eagles fan and proud of it.
The Eagles are the quintessential rock band who have transcended the generations while staying true to their music. In every incarnation from the founding members to the current lineup, their harmonies and music is instantly recognizable to every fan, from the toddlers to the grandparents that fill the sold out seats at every concert. Everyone knows the lyrics to every song and sings along from the first note to the last. Each man has put their signature on the group, from Don Henley and Glenn Frey’s songwriting, to Joe Walsh’s smoking guitar. Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon, 2 of the founding members, put their singing and guitar playing on such memorable songs as Take It To The Limit. Don Felder’s guitar playing was superb, but personal differences led to his leaving. Timothy B Schmit’s sweet voice graces the ballad I Can’t Tell You Why. Each man is a talented individual and together they are magic. Their music is the soundtrack to the lives of many. How many other musical groups are still a presence after 30 years? From Don Henley’s widely known support of projects such as Walden Woods, to Timothy B Schmit’s support of lesser known charities, the men of the Eagles have used their fame and money to contribute to the welfare of many. They have given back to the world that has embraced them. Many of you seem to think they have sold out because of the deal with WalMart, how about all the other artist’s whose music can be found there? Are they sellouts also? For those of you that are set on bashing them, do some research and find out about the men and their values before you accuse them of being greedy for protecting their own interests. To everyone else, enjoy the new album, I know I will

GravelCruncher | 8/24/2007, 11:53 am EST

shepula,

this doesn’t make sense: “let them all go to wal-mart where taste & style are non issues”. Ain’t the music gonna be the same no matter where it’s sold?

Wal-Mart is the “everyperson” store and not everyone likes that. Okay, I understand that. I have to admit that only selling it there deprives other business of income and eliminates the competition.

However, it certainly isn’t beneath me to go to Wal-Mart and buy the Eagles album. I think they are doing this to keep costs down and to gain more profit.

There are some groups that only sell their LPs over the Internet to give value to their fans. Others come out only on vinyl so they don’t get ripped off. I don’t see this as being any different from the Eagles to protect their product and gain more.

The difference appears to be that Wal-Mart isn’t a popular place for some people.

I sure don’t mind buying the album at Wal-Mart or Joe’s Records. As long as I get it.

Pego | 8/24/2007, 11:21 am EST

well what would you do if your boss kept most of your check? yeah, i thought so, you’d quit or else have someone else pay you. I don’t see anything wrong with that. If wal mart solves that problem for them, more power.

us cabbage kids keep on going with our smug muggin’ ways and love it. after all, isn’t it all about enjoyment.

New music? There’s great new music out there. I enjoy it too. But I certainly don’t begrudge folks that don’t like it.

shepula | 8/23/2007, 2:40 am EST

i gotta tell you. those don henley songs. boys of summer, all she wants to do is dance… they stink. sure some of the eagles songs are ok. hotel california is cool. whatever. that music & those musicians by & large are lame-o. let them all go to wal-mart where taste & style are non issues. it’s a perfect fit. maybe they, the eagles, could do a cross promotion with a tub of best foods mayo.

Ragin Johnny Chubb | 8/22/2007, 5:27 pm EST

Having numbers doesn’t make it any LESS cynical of the “BOIDS” to crap only at Wal-Mart.
If you smug muggers want to continue to dole out large chunks of cabbage to “worship”. feel free… but you could just as easily find new music that would fuel them fires.
Let a few of those discs gather some dust, and see how quickly “Frenly” change the tune.
Maybe they were referring to their “fans” when they sang, “you can check out any time you want, but you can NEVER LEAVE”.
I’m “already gone”. Take it easy.

Marge | 8/22/2007, 9:08 am EST

Mr. Smuggypants I agree totally. What you just stated goes to show the talent and ability of the Eagles to reinvent themselves yet reamin consistent.

Good Post Smuggy.

Mr. Smuggypants | 8/22/2007, 2:30 am EST

I have to comment on the bizarre statements of people who think that the Eagles were defined by Don Felder.

Don Felder is / was a talented musician who greatly contributed to the band, but I am always puzzled by the odd, ill-informed notions that the band declined after his departure. Have people who cling to this notion actually seen an Eagles’ concert since 1994?

I suggest that members of the Felder fringe rent or buy a copy of the Farewell Tour if they can’t access a live show. Joe Walsh is masterful at lead guitar, as is Steuart Smith, who replaces Felder’s actual role (as opposed to the mythical role attributed to him by the Felder fringe - no disrepect to Don who would probably be the first to acknowledge Steuart’s excellence!).

Don Felder is / was an excellent guitarist. He is the person who originally conceived of the eery sound that became the song, Hotel California and he played well on the albums while he was a member.

He was not an original member, as some people seem to think, nor was his departure a defining moment.

Felder moved onto other things. Good for him. His pseudo fans might follow his example. (His real fans know that he made a contribution and thank him.)

Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner also made rich contributions … and that’s normal for a high performing band with lots of talent. As the Eagles say, “Get over it!”

Groups evolve and change over the years. Core members and transient members all leave their imprints and legacies. Respect the process and enjoy the results.

To put this context, I would compare this criticism to people who say that the Stones sucked after Brian Jones died (while very talented, Jones lasted for five of the Stones’ forty year run). It’s just silly to make arguments like this.

Joe Walsh and Timothy Schmidt have now been members of the Eagles for 30 years. If you have seen the band in this time period, you are not only in awe of their talents and original contributions, but also
impressed by their dedication to performing and enhancing tracks that precede their entry into the band.

I am looking forward to the new CD.

Mr.Smuggypants

dw | 8/20/2007, 4:27 pm EST

I’ll wait for it on Limewire and I’ll mail a check for a couple bucks to Henley. I have never bought anything at Wal-mart and won’t ever!

Ragin Johnny Chubb | 8/20/2007, 10:38 am EST

WalMart apologists are the dumbest lot of consumer cattle ever led down the runway to the slaughterhouse.
If anything, this Eagles-deal just puts another nail in the coffin of the independent record store. But like I said before, most Eagles fans couldn’t find a record store with a GPS.
Eagles fans are the “pee-in-a-bottle” corporate slaves who make up most of dying America. The last time they tried NEW music was when their college roommate slipped a cassette tape into their player while they were tapping the keg in the kitchen.
Can you say ignorant honky?

Skeptical1 | 8/19/2007, 6:17 pm EST

Ah, The Eagles…bland and boring songs the top 40 radio stations used to play to death. As a band they suck as individuals most of the members are great. This reunion is all about money and has nothing to do with artistic integrity. The Walmart marketing proves that they are another bunch of post-hippie sellouts.

LuvEagles | 8/19/2007, 11:57 am EST

Can’t wait for the new album. Don’t care where they sell it, don’t care why, I want it.

Every song they have done is a hit. Each song has more effort put into it than most contemporary LPs.

Hell Freezes Over is a masterpiece of arrangement and performance. Eagles=Quality.

As far as record stores go, they’ve been screwing the public for too long! CDs should be getting cheaper not more expensive. Record stores are “convenient stores” for LPs, nothing more. They charge $18 to $20 for CDs you can get elsewhere for $10-$14.

Specialty stores used to be a place where, since they specialize in only a few items, you could get everything cheaper than the bigger stores - not anymore. They just don’t get it. Too much competition with Internet orders and downloads. Lower prices=more business.

I’m going to buy two and give one to a Wal-Mart employee.

Maybe if we all buy two, Wal-Mart employees will get a raise.

RdWarrior | 8/19/2007, 10:35 am EST

The Eagles are America’s Beatles. In terms of songwriting, vocal harmonies, range of styles from country to ballads to rockin’ they’re the best. I miss Felder too. But the band has changed some players on every other album while still maintaining a consistently great sound. With no chance of a Beatles reunion (we miss ya John & George) an Eagles reunion is the best we can hope for from an era when bands actually understood about melody, harmony and a killer hook.

widgetdoodad | 8/19/2007, 9:56 am EST

geeze, is this about the eagles or walmart? i reckon i have to comment on both.

the eagles are great. thats why they are still here making great music. all of them are talented in their own right and together they are amazing.

love their first album and everything inbetween esp. desperado album - greatest of all times. who else does harmonies like them - no one. folks, you can’t get any better.

eagles r eagles no matter who the members are. like a great chef they can take whats available and produce and excellent product. they r perfectionists, i agree.

so they are selling through walmart so what? i love it.

our society is a free market business. business has to offer jobs that are competitive to attract employees who have a choice. from some of the comments here, youd think those people were forced to work for walmart. some of these employees are transiets, others permanent. either way, if they have a skill set better than walmart needs, then move on. its their choice. we go into a job knowing its good and bad points.

costco is a choice for people who dont like walmart. but i dont cotton to the idea of having to be a “member” to buy something. i know it will save money in the long run if i buy a lot there but i dont. see, its a choice i make.

keep the government out of all this stuff and let the free market take care of its self. if not, were going to be dictated by the government every little thing. we as a nation dont like that do we? we certainly dont like other contries that do that dictatorship thing. lets dont go there.

be careful. the walmart debate may be more about our freedom than bad practices. where does it stop? do you get paid enough? do we want to start setting limits on pay?

its about supply and demand. when you take one of these away by gov. intervention or anything, you upset the apple cart.

Remember - if everyone had a million dollars, it wouldn’t be worth any thing.

Zoombiah | 8/19/2007, 8:11 am EST

I love the Eagles. Best albums - all of them. And I have them all in vinyl and CD. I need to have my Eagles and Beatles “fix” every week.

I too like Felder & company with the occasional banjo. But it is what it is - things change. But their “sound” is still Eagles, and that’s what I want.

The greatest rock and pop era is over with. Any time one of those groups comes back with a concert or new album it’s relished by young and old. We sense that the “greatest music ever made” is gone, so we grasp at any hint of its return.

I think it’s great to go the Walmart route. It will be interesting to see what the CD costs.

I got the latest Harry Potter at Walmart. It was cheaper there than any where else by a wide margin. Walmart had it for $18 while others were charging $20+ to $25. I guess that means they got theirs from slave labor and the China connection.

Why would you want to pay more? That’s like taking your money and throwing it away. If you’re so into the employee thing, then give the cashier a tip with the money you save.

We seem to forget that, as the Simpson’s so wonderfully stated in one of thier episodes, WE are Walmart - because they give us what we want.

If Walmart went away today, another would spring up to take its place. Think Target, Best Buy, and other big chain stores opening up in the Northeast. Don’t you love competition? That’s what we need more of.

Well, I think I’ll go to McDonald’s and get a hamburger knowing all too well that they get their meat from South America (the continent, not Southern USA).

Come to think of it, I’m typing this with a computer “Made In China” distributed by a US company. Ironic, isn’t it?

Where do we draw the line?

DonDiago | 8/18/2007, 10:10 pm EST

yeah, i agree with justsayin.

walmart gives jobs and those people have a choice where they want to work. if they dont like it, quit.

pople bash walmart cause they get stuff from factories in china. then say those are working in bad conditions.

hell we got migrant workers in our country with almost the same working condition. does that mean we are going to stop buying fruits and vegetabls. i dont think so.

it easy to point the finger at a big corp. and we love to hate something big like that. yet we let the oil companies take food out of our mouths by keep raising prices. i dont hear anyone complaining about that.

where i live walmart hires mainly mexicans who are living in paradice compared to where they came from.

youu gotta put everything in perspectve. if you get down on your luck and need a job you’ll change your tune. believe me.

ImJustSayin | 8/18/2007, 9:52 pm EST

The Eagles are all-around great. From that first song I heard and said “man, who is that”? Been a fan ever since.

Wal-Mart; ya either love it or hate it. Depends upon which side of the “brainwash” fence you’re on.

I love it. Why? Because they sell the same products other stores sell, only cheaper. Like, that Heinz ketsup that came from the same place that Bi-Lo or Winn Dixie got theirs, or those Lays potato chips, Oreos, Jimmy Dean sausage, etc. And they have the same electronics as everyone else yet cheaper.

So how does Wal-Mart sell it lower? (Insert your poor worker comments here - poor workers deprived of benefits - poor workers who would not even have a job if not for Wal-Mart). They sell lower because they have a better business plan. Sure, they keep costs down and certainly that includes wages to some degree, but what company doesn’t? How about all the outsourcing companies are doing that deprive even a job to exist in the US?

While I’m at it, how about all those products Wal-Mart buys from American companies that have moved their manufacturing overseas? Yep. Check out Intel, GE, Maytag, all textile companies (are there any remaining here?).

Simple, huh? Just like some American banks offer free checking while others don’t - because they have better management and organizatonal skills. Just like some resturants serve the same meal cheaper. Like some auto mechanics who are less expensive. On and on. You get the point.

And I don’t hear anyone praising their efforts to provide the lowest price. Why wouldn’t you? Why wouldn’t you want every thing you buy to be lower cost?

And, oh yes, I just bought a tool from Sears that said “Made In China”…. Oooops. Put them on the “hit list”.

wondonfu | 8/18/2007, 11:13 am EST

Where musicianship and lyricism are concerned, rock was the 60’s and 70’s. Acts from that era are the only thing keeping the genre alive.

The new songs off the “Farewell I” DVD (No More Cloudy Days, One Day at a Time) were excellent — I hope it is indicative of the rest of the new album.

As for the Walmart deal — I think it is perfectly acceptable. Then again, I didn’t write the song called “The Last Resort”…

Kruzinski | 8/15/2007, 11:48 am EST

I never was an Eagles fan, so I couldn’t care less about a new album or reunion? However, the Wal-Mart distribution deal is just laughable. Its par for the course though, because the greed factor amongst that generation is just pathetic.Last Dec, I saw the Who, and Daltry’s voice was so shelled, that I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. That was the final straw for me:No more boomer albums or shows.I’m sick and tired of being ripped off.As for the joker who said that Wal-Mart has done more for this economy/country, than any union.Hey buddy, you really do need to conduct a little research.

Country Crotch | 8/15/2007, 9:45 am EST

I’m a huge fan of the Eagles and would love to see them again! I saw them when they played against the Washington Redskins last year and their running and passing game was phenomenal. I can’t wait till the new season starts!

ap75021 | 8/15/2007, 6:43 am EST

Saw the Eagles back when hell froze over in ‘94…would go see ‘em again this time around. Always likeed their stuff and look forward to the new material too…don’t care where it’s available if I like the band. If you have that much of a problem with Wal-Mart then wait a year to enjoy the music. Your choice, I don’t choose to wait for my music.

Wini | 8/15/2007, 3:17 am EST

As an Eagles fan living in Germany, I’m not happy about that Wal-Mart deal, of course. From an artists point of view, I can understand they don’t want to deal with a record company again and still want to reach a large audience and get good pay for their work (they’re just like the rest of us, right?).

Those of you claiming they are “irrelevant”, let’s wait for the album and THEN judge again. I admit that except for Henley’s solo work, the rest of the solo albums never meant much to me either. But I haven’t given up hope that their collaborative efforts are strong enough. I trust they are stronger than a lot of the other stuff we’re hearing today.

As for their place in music history, there are people who started their career after the Eagles broke up in 81, and nobody remembers them now. How about MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, New Kids On The Block, etc.? 5 years from now nobody will remember 50 Cent, The Game, or Soundgarden …

At least the Eagles DO release a new album. Where is “Chinese Democracy”?

Anthony Pittarelli | 8/15/2007, 12:28 am EST

i disagree with the eagles being the “best loved band of all time”, heres hoping the new album isnt super lame

no quarter | 8/14/2007, 10:44 pm EST

20 cents,
Just flip a damn coin then.
The “initial point” went way over your head.

eaglefan | 8/14/2007, 10:43 pm EST

I find it funny for so many people that HATE the Eagles to have so much to say about them. If I do not like someone or something I damn well do not even think about them.
The Eagles are the best loved rock band of all time.Their music stands for them .They do not need your smart ass mouths.
Hole In The World is a song about how empty the families are now that their loved ones were killed. It is about how empty and void of love this country is. It is about how empty the people haters are that post here.
Don Henley is a good man as well as the rest of the band. Timothy is a great addition and hot as hell for 60.
All of you that are so busy hating and not wanting to go to WalMart hell buy the CD on line. I am sure L&M will be glad to help you.
You know Peace and Love is what we need in this world not hate and it has to start and it starts within each of us.
Peace Diane a 100% from the start Eagle Fan Rocked my babies to sleep to Eagle music.

Jeff in Roseville, CA | 8/14/2007, 10:34 pm EST

I have been an Eagles fan since 1972, so, my anticipation is high….as are my expectations.

muffin | 8/14/2007, 10:13 pm EST

i really enjoy the sound of the eagles!!! but, i must say i will be listening to it in a year.

Mike | 8/14/2007, 9:05 pm EST

If you hate the EAGLES why would you waste your time reading the story and then posting about it?
I guess just alot of STUPID people.
The EAGLES RULE and so does Wal-Mart.

JD | 8/14/2007, 8:38 pm EST

Donovan McNabb will be taking Don Felder’s place on guitar

Sam Walton | 8/14/2007, 8:34 pm EST

This is one album I will absolutely be downloading. Damned if I give Wal Mart and $$$…Shame on you, Henley.

just my 20 cents | 8/14/2007, 8:26 pm EST

Wikipedia doesn’t track worldwide album sales - that’s the point. NO ONE does. Combining mutiple websites posting the same, unsubstantiated statement doesn’t make something real. Who’s “approximation” anyway? Yours? Mine? The record label’s?

stanley 64 | 8/14/2007, 8:22 pm EST

hey Henley everyone says its your band, you do whatever the fuck you want…..the Eagles lost their way decades ago……

Patrick | 8/14/2007, 8:06 pm EST

Could someone please name one band with more recognizable hits please and also name the hits to prove it…. theres a reason the Eagles are constanly requested on the radio

dear just my 20 cents | 8/14/2007, 6:52 pm EST

just my 20 cents | 8/14/2007, 5:49 pm EST

“2) The Thriller/worldwide sales figure is a joke. No one even tracks worldwide sales. Unless you have counted every single album sale in the entire world yourself, don’t make silly statements based on no source, other than Wikipedia.”

20 cents,
Part of the combined source WAS based on information from Wikipedia. The key word also emphasized on this post was ‘approximate sales’.

just my 20 cents | 8/14/2007, 5:49 pm EST

1) Like it or not, the biggest record store IS Wal-Mart.

2) The Thriller/worldwide sales figure is a joke. No one even tracks worldwide sales. Unless you have counted every single album sale in the entire world yourself, don’t make silly statements based on no source, other than Wikipedia.

3) Felder hasn’t been in the band in this century & who cares? Get over it.

4) Wal-Mart has done more for the economy & working class than any union. The anti Wal-Mart talking points/rhetoric is so boring.

5) If i hated a band, I sure wouldn’t waste any time reading or thinking about them, let alone posting about them.

Jim | 8/14/2007, 4:40 pm EST

Another video of Henley smacking his lips between verses like Raymond Burr

guitarchica | 8/14/2007, 4:08 pm EST

If there are any questions about whether this is the real deal or a marketing ploy, why not go over to Billboard and read the Joe Walsh interview from last week…I’m sure you’ll get a straighter answer from him than from the Eagle-haters of RS. (RS is apparently *still* p.o.’d about getting whooped in that infamous softball game…..in 1978. Let it go, people.)

BTW - Those of you jumping on the VH bandwagon, just realize that you’re all about nepotism. Eddie screwed over Michael Anthony, who’d been there from the beginning, in favor of his 16 year-old son. Chew on that… >

Philbee | 8/14/2007, 3:59 pm EST

The cab driver in Lebowski seemed to love the Eagles. Maybe the Eagles are the guilty pleasure of african-american cabbies in LA.

Mico | 8/14/2007, 3:48 pm EST

I love the Eagles. Forever

sj | 8/14/2007, 3:41 pm EST

Well ya have to give ‘em credit for all they’ve done - thanks- Hopefully this time they can show some grace toward those that have helped to prosper there lives big time. No Walmarts in our county, so it won’t be avalible here. Still a big handshake for HC, boys!

bernard sumner | 8/14/2007, 2:48 pm EST

NEW ORDER IS STILL BETTER

dpc915 | 8/14/2007, 2:32 pm EST

one can only hope its not adult AC shit….but Joe Walsh (whom I just say) still rocks and he said his songs on the Eagles CD are rockin’ which is good….like Glenn Frey….Henley….well he is a douschbag….but if the CD’s good, who cares right?

David Lee Roth | 8/14/2007, 2:29 pm EST

C’mon people, haven’t you heard the news?? Van Halen will be reuniting and touring. And it’s gonna be more than a reunion and we’re gonna be better than ever! Screw Don Henly and the Eagles new CD, man. Go read that other Van Halen article on ths RS website.

Rob P | 8/14/2007, 2:23 pm EST

If you guys think the Eagles suck compared to what is played on radio today, I don’t know what to tell ya other than you need hearing aids. I am not Mr. Eagles fan, but they are a solid group. Love all the Wal-Mart hating here with references to “evil” etc…. What the hell kind of drugs are you on???

Sammy | 8/14/2007, 2:12 pm EST

Don Henley needs a 8==D in his ( )( )

Jughead | 8/14/2007, 1:30 pm EST

Wait a minute…..here it comes…..******faaarrrrtt**** **…..ahhhhh, that’s what I think of the new Eagles CD release.

Pete | 8/14/2007, 1:21 pm EST

It has NOT been 13 years (since 1994) since the Eagles “got back together”. They’ve performed flawlessly together for the last few years on an extremely sucessful concert tour; not to mention gathering together in the recording studio just after the 9-11 disaster. Natalie Zfat needs to pull her head out of her butt, and get her facts straight…

Pete Best | 8/14/2007, 1:20 pm EST

Jughead is a douche!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don Henley | 8/14/2007, 1:04 pm EST

Save a tree and buy the Eagles new CD…BTW-I don’t look like Regis but I sure would do Kathie Lee or Kelly, doesn’t matter to me.

C.D. | 8/14/2007, 1:03 pm EST

Eric…yes people like myself DO care. BTW, The Eagles and Don Henley are still playing at sold out concerts. Also, I think Don gets better and better looking as the years go by.

VG | 8/14/2007, 12:56 pm EST

Patrick, The Eagles don’t have the all-time selling album. Michael Jackson’s Thriller is the “worldwide” top selling album of all time. Add to that list Back In Black and Dark Side of the Moon, which rank in approximate album sales worldwide alongside the Eagles’ Greatest Hits.
Number of albums sold is completely irrelevant to individual musical taste and preference anyway; there are many true music lovers who prefer other music styles and genres to the Eagles.

C.D. | 8/14/2007, 12:50 pm EST

Hotel California isn’t the best selling, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 is. Hello!!!

Burnt Crispies | 8/14/2007, 12:45 pm EST

You mean to tell me that the Philadelphia Eagles are coming out with a new CD in October? Why? Are there high hopes of them making it to the Super Bowl? I didn’t think those football players had spare time to be rock and roll musicians too.

Jughead | 8/14/2007, 12:39 pm EST

What fucking year is this? Police tour? Van Halen tour? Eagles CD? I should have laid off the acid in high school.

Hey Baba Booey, why don’t you get an original thought instead of stealing mine.

Humina humina | 8/14/2007, 12:11 pm EST

I’m in as long as Joe Walsh is onboard. What’s the big deal about WalMart? Relax people..

Eric Spivey | 8/14/2007, 11:50 am EST

Does Don Henley truly believe that people care? The Eagles haven’t been relevant in 30 years. They’re just bellying up to the trough again, like so many pigs, eating until they pop. It’s time they went away.

Bob | 8/14/2007, 11:28 am EST

Well, selling at WalMart…that should pretty much negate all the good karmic points for saving Walden Pond…WTF?

Babba Booey | 8/14/2007, 11:26 am EST

Never mind the Eagles coming out with a new CD. What’s up with Regis holding that guitar. Is he forming a band? That’s the real news I would like to read about. And how does Kelly fit into all this?

deadhead4life | 8/14/2007, 11:02 am EST

good point markarrow, but wal mart nor the eagles will ever get any of my money

Beatrice Bailey | 8/14/2007, 11:00 am EST

I DIDNT KNOW REGIS PLAYED…

pow!! | 8/14/2007, 10:59 am EST

only at walmart? are you kidding me? looks like a cd ill burn and please, please be being sarcastic southern hick. please.

Southern Hick | 8/14/2007, 10:51 am EST

Heeeee hawwwww! That there Mr. Henley looks mighty sharp in that suit. And I love shopping at Wal-Mart. I will buy me that new Eagles CD and be listening to them while I’m riding my bronco on the range, pardner. This is best news I’ve heard since hearing ’bout Bush winning reelection, yes indeedy deed. The mighty good Lord is blessing our proud land!

Scott G | 8/14/2007, 10:20 am EST

If you’re not even a fan of the Eagles what do you care? You know why radio is dead? Because all they want to promote is hip-hop and rap. Do you really think there will be pent up demand for reunion tours for 50 cent or Snoop Dogg in 20 years? The record company whores like hip-hop because it is so cheap to produce. Sample a classic rock tune and insert todays dumbass lyrics from a bunch of illiterate thugs. Now thats creative! Idiots.

Mule | 8/14/2007, 9:57 am EST

I’ve always admired Don…but there’s something so…UN-Rock’n'Roll about that photo of him, yes?

fatso | 8/14/2007, 9:55 am EST

Felder rules!!!!

Garbear | 8/14/2007, 9:50 am EST

yea, say what you want, but the cats can still lay down some good tracks I hope. Oh and the comment that Don looks like Regis really split me up- he does, Im still laughing.

Whalespoon | 8/14/2007, 9:37 am EST

New Eagles album and a Van Halen reunion tour announcement on the same day–it kinds makes my skin crawl…

Aaron D. | 8/14/2007, 9:36 am EST

Am I the only one who heard the single they released about a year ago? “Hole in the World” was total garbage.

And I’ve had a long standing personal boycott against Wal-Mart for a list of reasons. Whenever I walk into a Wal-Mart, I can feel the evil creeping into my soul. It’s disturbing.

Emma | 8/14/2007, 9:36 am EST

I love the Eagles, i can’t wait for the new album and fyi Don Henley still looks good to me!!

Big Nate | 8/14/2007, 9:28 am EST

These guys need to join with the Police and Van Halen and call it The Irrelevant Tour.

Scott | 8/14/2007, 9:27 am EST

That picture of Henley above looks about as anti-rock’n'roll as possible.

Country Crotch | 8/14/2007, 9:18 am EST

I’m looking forward to their new album as much as I look forward to having a hand up my ass.

Markarrow | 8/14/2007, 8:46 am EST

The Wal-Mart deal HAD to happen. Radio is dead. Retail outlets are barely breathing and every new savior of music (i.e. satellite radio and downloading) is proving a dead end for getting music out to the masses, not just a specific sub-culture or group, but the masses.

What killed all this? Corporate greed. The people who own the music charged way too much for CDs, the corporate owners of radio stations developed small niche audiences and then complained that they couldn’t reach wider audiences.
This country needs Teddy Roosevelt to come along and break up the few corporations that decide what we listen to, eat, read and watch.

Local programming, local identity, local musicians working to get out to other localities is what builds a band, not VH1 placing them in rotation because the band’s manager cut a deal to send them out on tour under the VH1 banner.
Henley and Co. (yes another corporation, but when in Rome….)have no avenue to get their music out to where America shops. I hate Wal-Mart, but in their favor, Wal-Mart don’t care who you are as long as you walk in with money. They are not elitist, they are not a subscription service, they just sell to anyone.

Until America breaks the idea of a few people owning a lot of stuff, just like it did at the turn of the 19th century, we as a culture are doomed to fragment into little pieces, each believing they are individualistic while ironically being exploited by a single owner.

Henley, I know this won’t suck. Oh yeah, dump the fity-six backing muscicians and just bring Poco out on the road with you. They can easily play the stuff that Leadon/Felder used to. Try being a band and get rid of the Las Vegas road show. You guys are two minutes away from showgirls walking down the center of the stage in massive boas while Frey sings Take It Easy. You are a band! Throw the banjo back in every fifty minutes, even if you are way past 21. An honest good luck wish to Glenn and Don inc.

fatso | 8/14/2007, 8:37 am EST

not sure what to make of the wal-mart thing. don henley is one of those musicians who showed me that you can make pop art and still be politically active. but then you see the wal-mart thing - and their reprehensible labor practices - and you wonder to what extent don might be selling out. not to mention wal-mart’s own sales stance on creative control…

eternal sunshine | 8/14/2007, 8:14 am EST

the wal-mart thing is crap.
but i’m interested to hear what they’ve created after 20+ years apart.

Bernie | 8/14/2007, 7:54 am EST

Eagles are the greatest band ever. They are excellent songwriters and musicians, and certainly the new CD will be terrific. Stop already with the “Wal mart” stuff. Who cares? let them do what they want. Buy the CD and enjoy good solid music from Hall of Famers, who, by the way, are only one of a hand ful of classic rock bands with all members now and original, who are still alive. Even 2 members of Bread died a few years ago and they didn’t do hard drugs(sadly)

Mozza | 8/14/2007, 7:10 am EST

I lost my wife July 2007 as a true Eagles fan her one wish that she hoped would come true, was for Don Felder to rejoin the Eagles and for Fry and Henley to let bygones be bygones I guess it was only a pipe dream.

The Phantom | 8/14/2007, 6:44 am EST

Don Henley? For a split second, I thought that was Regis!

DNA | 8/14/2007, 6:19 am EST

It doesn’t matter were the new “CD” will be sold. If you are a true music fan you can recognize talent when you hear it, regardless of the “genre”. The place of purchase is secondary. The
talent is primary.

Stormqueen | 8/14/2007, 3:48 am EST

I will agree and disagree with some of these comments.

I am a huge fan of the Eagles

I agree on what dupacrash says about walmart it’s a mess, there’s hardly any cd’s left it also takes a while to search for any cd because there mixed up in every catagory but style there known for

And why just walmart? i mean take the lady who wrote the Harry Potter Books for exsample she released the books on Amazon.com, Best Buy, Target just to name a few with that she sold more whith these companies than if she just sold to Barnes & Noble alone. What would happen if the eagles did this

Agree that Felder should be playing the guitar on the album

Disagree I herd three songs of new the CD and they rock

I think the album will do fantastic

Jeff | 8/14/2007, 1:24 am EST

Exclusively through Wal-Mart?

Boy, I love The Eagles and I love Don Henley…I’d love to buy their new album.

But wow, what a great excuse to download.

Good job Mr. Henley you just lost yourself a sale. Like you need it, but still.

Chuck T | 8/14/2007, 1:20 am EST

and actually, thriller has sold more than hotel california, by like 40 million worldwide

Eaglefan9727 | 8/14/2007, 12:38 am EST

Give it a rest you Eagle haters. Like someone stated, They went the walmart way, Because they were sick of the record companies screwing them over. To the guy that made a comment about a reunion tour. This is not a reuinion tour. They have been around again since 1994. That was when they had their reuinion tour.

Patrick | 8/14/2007, 12:32 am EST

Any true music lover cannot hate the Eagles…. theres a reason they have the all-time selling album…. you dont have to like anyone but you cant say they suck…. no band has more hits or fans

Adam | 8/13/2007, 11:36 pm EST

If “Hole in the World” is indicative of the new material, no thanks…. I couldn’t stay awake thru the second verse… no less the unnecessary key change. I love their stuff, but that song blows.

booboo | 8/13/2007, 10:53 pm EST

I am a huge Eagles fans and have been eagerly awaiting this cd. I can understand the Walmart thing, too. The big record companies are on the way out. They all but rob the artists so why shouldn’t they go where they get the best deal.
This cd will rock! There will be a whole gneration of new Eagles fans out there!

One Fish Two Fish | 8/13/2007, 10:47 pm EST

Fuck the Eagles, just because there are a bunch of other reunion tours going down right now doesn’t mean the lamest corporate rock whores can get back together just to make another dime. Weren’t you assholes rich enough? Go get your sun tans in the Bahamas and keep investing your money, no one wants to hear your bullshit again.

opulentrasher | 8/13/2007, 10:45 pm EST

The Eagles, aw the Eagles… Too bad that even their semi-good, but mainly lame rock/country music is getting run thru this mill.
Hail the almighty solo artist. Each of them did better as such.

Boatman | 8/13/2007, 10:38 pm EST

I don’t like the Eagles yet I like many of their songs, especially Take It Easy. But selling only through Walmart is contributing to the total extinction of record stores. I miss the old record stores!

destroy all hamsters | 8/13/2007, 10:34 pm EST

why?

C.D. | 8/13/2007, 10:27 pm EST

The Eagles are an excellent band and, by far, my favorite. This new CD will rock BIG TIME! I can’t wait. By the way, all you goofs that don’t like them or who will absolutely not buy the new CD because it deals with Wal-mart, whatever. That’s fine with all of the true fans like me. That means I’ll have a better chance at getting concert tickets and a copy of that AWESOME new CD. Have a great day.

Rabidronnie | 8/13/2007, 10:02 pm EST

Wow, just how did we make it all these years without periodic infusions of utter mediocrity from the Eagles?

dupacrash | 8/13/2007, 9:59 pm EST

have you ever tried shopping for cd’s at wal-mart? it sucks. by the time you trudge thru the country and christian cd’s there’s hardly any left. and it’s always a mess.

CaraElizabeth | 8/13/2007, 9:57 pm EST

Good God.
And that’s all I have to say.

guitarchica | 8/13/2007, 9:30 pm EST

I don’t know…Henley and Frey have a tendency to not release it if it’s not to a certain standard. There are rumors that a single will drop within the next month or so. Listen before you judge. Otherwise, go back to your Nirvana worshipping, K???

Ragin Johnny Chubb | 8/13/2007, 9:27 pm EST

The Wal-Msrt thing is really weird. But WallyWorld does sell more than 50% of all recorded music. And how many Eagles fans can even find an independent record store?
So are we bummed because we can’t get it at BestBuy? Like there’s any difference between them and Wal-Mart.
I just hope it rocks, because you know they also have a deal with that guy who programs ALL the radio stations in Amerika.

jripple | 8/13/2007, 9:22 pm EST

An amasing body of work. The Eagles are icons for the Baby Boomers. Henley has always stood up for what is right he felt was socially and politically right. Hearing that they are in bed with Walmart is so disappointing I can’t believe it. This is the biggest sell out I can think of and they should be ashamed of themselves. Walmart is at least a symbol of anti worker/union, and sells goods which are mostly made in China (by near forced labor, under brutal conditions) I can tell you that I will not puchase this CD at Walmart or any other place. Actually, I think I’ll have someone burn a copy for me instead. These guys are pathetic.

ko | 8/13/2007, 9:21 pm EST

Great news ’bout totally COOL new material! You guys hate the Eagles….more tickets for the REAL fans. EAGLES ROCK!

eaglefan | 8/13/2007, 9:17 pm EST

Ever stop and concider that The Eagles could care less if you hate them or not.
I think the WalMart thing sucks also but it is their choice to make not ours so take a toke or two and chill………Peace , Diane

Jimmy | 8/13/2007, 9:05 pm EST

Everyone but the Eagles knows this record is going to be terrible.

Bogie | 8/13/2007, 8:45 pm EST

Mac | 8/13/2007, 8:34 pm EST

Maybe Don Felder should call Michael Anthony…

Bill Foster | 8/13/2007, 8:33 pm EST

Only through Wall-Mart? Are you kidding me? Well, I don’t have high hopes for this anyway, but this will be the final straw. Have a nice life Don and Glenn … I’m done.

Joe | 8/13/2007, 8:21 pm EST

This is epic. Hoping the lineup is Henley, Frey, Felder, Walsh and Schmidt, but I think Felder is long gone.

megasudz | 8/13/2007, 8:18 pm EST

So I have to walk into a Wal-Mart. Don Henley doesn’t have to walk into that shit store, but I have to do this to buy this disk. Man how about iTunes. Buy an iPod GRAND-PA

g-man | 8/13/2007, 7:48 pm EST

i am so glad these dudes got back on the same page. now all we need is pink floyd to follow suit. what do you say, u.s.a.?

Nice reference to Big Lebowski

Zachra | 8/13/2007, 7:10 pm EST

Exclusively through Wal-Mart for the first 12 months?

Thanks for screwing over record stores even more than they already are, Eagles.

“I’ve had a rough day and I hate the fucking Eagles, man!”…indeed.
