Blue Note Developing MySpace for Astute Jazz Fans

8/13/07, 2:37 pm EST

Reports abound that legendary jazz and blues label Blue Note is revamping its Web site as a combination social-networking and digital-downloading source, presumably offering music from Blue Note’s extensive back catalog. “No marketing and no attention is usually paid to an older demographic,” Blue Note general manager Zach Hochkeppel told Reuters. “They’re sort of ignored and neglected by media in general. Youth is always the first and foremost target, [which] sends the message to the older consumer that ‘This isn’t for you.’” Blue Note is banking on the idea that middle-aged music fans are just as Web savvy as their younger counterparts, and are actually more willing to pay for the music they download — a claim that is supported by a handful of recent surveys. But will all those tweedy Coltrane-obsessed Gaulois smokers hang out online messaging each other about rare digital releases (or their wine cellars)? We’ll see.

I think it’s a good idea, Daddy-O.

Why not give the geezers their own nook of the Internet where they can share their latest thoughts on jazz, cheese, and cardigan sweaters with like-minded connoisseurs?

Anything that moves the web away from a Steve Jobs or Rupert Murdoch monoply is a boon to all, IMHO.

Play on, brother, play on.
