Postscript: Tony Wilson (1950-2007)

Say what you like about Tony Wilson, he was no sentimentalist. “Do I have any problem with any of Happy Mondays dying on me?” he said to The Face in 1989, at the height of Madchester-mania. “I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with any of these guys dying on me! Listen, Ian Curtis dying on me was the greatest thing that’s happened to my life. Death sells!” The U.K.’s most outrageous music impresario died today of a heart attack, at the age of 57, after a battle with kidney cancer. He founded Factory Records, making legends out of Manchester bands like Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays and A Certain Ratio. His club, the Hacienda, was one of the crucibles of rave culture. His gloriously self-aggrandizing life story became 24 Hour Party People, one of the best rock movies ever made, with Steve Coogan playing Wilson; in the climactic scene, Wilson sees God, who says, “Tony, you did a good job. It’s a pity you didn’t sign the Smiths, but you were right about Mick Hucknall.” Just a few months ago, Wilson showed up onstage at the Coachella Festival, introducing the Mondays, and got bigger cheers than the band did. He’ll always be remembered as a wild character who also doubled as a musical visionary. Here’s a clip of his surprise Coachella appearance from April, with the expats in the crowd yelling “Foookin’ Tony Wilson!” in delight. This man did not walk away in silence.

MONDAY’S must have meant alot to Wilson, the song “BLUE MONDAY”, the Band “HAPPY MONDAY’S and his funeral taking place on MONDAY-VERY SCARY!!

ANONYMOUS | 8/19/2007, 7:35 am EST

Tony Wilson brought “IN THE CITY” to Manchester so those in “LONDON” knew there was more to England than “LONDON”. It should have been a great networking source but ego’s didn’t allow that that. It was good for the likes of Feargull Sharkey to have a few FREE drinks stay at a posh hotel and thts it! The ONLY band that came from this was “RADIOHEAD” who were signed because they were chosen to play at a venue!! If yo go back and ask GRANADA TV, there is a starving and Freezing young Thom Yorke who was praying to get signed and they did-check it out!! OASIS were NOT part of the so called “MADCHESTER” scene its NOT what they wanted, they hired a van where they knew Cration Records were going to be and crashed the gate by saying they were the support band, it worked, they got signed and the rest is history!! Tony Wilson played NO part in this so lets NOT credit him with discovering them, the politics at Factory were awful, every submission that came in was thrown in the rubbish!! James had a short lived career, BUT they couldn’t compete with the bands of today. The ONLY thing Wilson did was bring the labels to Manchester and tht was it!! If you were not on his team he was very cruel to you, it was his way or the highway!! Had he have gone that one extra mile alot of what he started and his company would still be around today. He gave people a “FREE RIDE” working with him and they took it!! What did he get in return? NOTHING, a short life, even the NHS refused to give him the drug that could have saved him, that’s the truth!!

BLUE MONDAY OR MANIC MONDAY!! | 8/18/2007, 9:30 pm EST

When they bury Tony Wilson on Monday by invitation only!, you’ll have all the crocodile tears shedding from his peers, who couldn’t save this man from dying, too much money I guess. He was NO Elvis Presley or John Lennon, and five years from now NO-ONE will remember him his ephitaph should read:

“LIFE’S A BITCH AND THEN YOU DIE!!

Lets leave this one alone now its getting old, let the CO-OP Funeral Place do the rest, the equivalent of Welfare!!! As the Bangles said: “IT’S JUST ANOTHER MANIC MONDAY!!

Phantom - don’t include wonderful intelligent one-off people like Tony in your bizarre rants. Hey how about getting your own life?

Winston Churchill | 8/18/2007, 2:14 am EST

To the person known as TONE we had Winston Churchill and bloody good troops! We didn’t need the aYanks, all they did was shag our women, drink our wine and made out they were BIG SHOTS!! I served in the war we would have gotten Hitler on our own, why don’t you find Osama instead of insulting us Brits. Your in a war that has NO ending, I thought this was related to Tony Wilson, you need to air your views elsewhere you wanker!!

Bollocks | 8/17/2007, 5:49 pm EST

“US” Pansy assed Brits keep your economy growing, we get two dollars for every one of ours, without us you’d have NO economy, you need us and badly. So before you go pointing the finger at the past, understand the “NOW” factor

Tone | 8/17/2007, 11:23 am EST

“Oh yeah, you pansy assed Brits didn’t seem to mind us “starting wars” Americans when you needed help when Hitler was bombing London!”

And the US didn’t mind sitting back and watching the world fight one of the greatest evil empires of the 20th century, only lifting a finger to help 3 years too late.

It’s true that us Brits aren’t necessarily more intelligent than you Americans, but safe to say that in the Phantom’s case we probably are.

Have a nice day dickhead! :)

The Phantom | 8/15/2007, 11:32 pm EST

Thanks for the statistics. You’re a real interesting guy. I guess that’s why you’re so popular with the ladies! Don’t blame me for the fact that you don’t know how to express yourself clearly. I don’t know about your numbers, but I can clealy see your inept useage of the english language.

Bollocks | 8/15/2007, 1:35 pm EST

To This Charming man and FAC2209, your comments are noted sounds like PHIL SAXE who worked with Tony Wilson, he’s richer that Tony go figure that one out, why didn’t he help him out? He was Factory’s downfall guy, if II would have been Tony Wilson I would hace SACKED him!!

descooterdude | 8/15/2007, 1:19 pm EST

Hey Phantom, read my comments below again and you will figure out that I love old British music- Beatles The Who etc. Please read carefully before making some stupid comments. Since the 80s, most of the music out of England makes up 0.2 % of stuff on the radio in America. That used to be 70 % during the great days of the 60s and 70s.

Kendal's | 8/14/2007, 10:05 pm EST

I worked in the Mens department of Kendals as a salesgirl back in the 80’s. One day Tony Wilson walked in and we were launching New West a new Face Gel, he proceeded to our counter sqeezed it into his hand and rubbed it all over his hair. We had to call Security to have him escorted out, he was either drunk or stoned. I’ve read all these posts doesn’t sound like he was a friendly person, I remember his Friday night TV shows and his debates on keeping Sunday’s special! How can a millionare mogul go from all that to NOT having the money to keep him alive? Sounds like the ex Geoffrey Gee from Leeds who courted KATHY KIRBY he also died BANKRUPT. Hope Rock & Roll Heaven is better to him than real life.

Manchester Mick | 8/14/2007, 8:07 pm EST

Unfortunately EVERYBODY missed THE SOUND!!! I discovered them through UNCUT magazine, about this amazing innovative band that came out of the same scene that Echo and the Bunnymen came out of. The sweet soul of Adrian Borland who could no longer tolerate toiling in obscurity, committed suicide in 1999. These are the tragedies that people wearing rose colored glasses just dont want to deal with and much rather sweep under the rug!!! Tony Wilson–Rest In Pieces

GONE SAVAGE | 8/14/2007, 7:38 pm EST

Missed us too, too late now the guy’s dead and buried, died almost broke great ending for the “GIANT” of the MADCHESTER scene!!

INDIA | 8/14/2007, 7:23 pm EST

He missed signing us at the time, his A&R guys were jokes, why do you think he went bankrupt, wrong people in the right jobs

BOLLOCKS | 8/14/2007, 7:09 pm EST

He was full of himself and he knew it. Hemised out signing “Staggerin’ Man and other promising bands. I remember a guy called John Slater and Spencer Wells both wankers. You guys need to see both sides of the picture before you judge others. Even if you respect him, there are those who didn’t, this is a “FREE” world and our views are just that our views, ther’s another wanker Dave Massey, or maybe they all died!!

This Charming Manc | 8/14/2007, 5:49 pm EST

There are some sick fuckers on here, why when a man gives his entire life to finding, signing, championing and celebrating music, you slag him off?
This man gave Madonna her first live gig in the UK at the hacienda. he produced the worlds biggest selling 12″ single. He discovered or signed Joy Division,New Order,Happy Mondays,James,The Smiths,808 State,A Certain Ratio,OMD,The Buzzcocks,The Fall and loads more. His new music festival called in the city helped bands like Muse and The Darkness and He is respected by everyone in music. Show the man some fuckin respect you pricks. If you are not inspired or moved by songs like love will tear us appart or blue monday or ever fallen in love then you are tone deaf.

Refrigerator Door | 8/14/2007, 5:34 pm EST

Opens…You assholes still here? Get out of the way; You’re blocking the Diet Pepsi. . .SLAM

FAC2209 | 8/14/2007, 5:24 pm EST

Tony Wilson was one of the of the most influential men in the madchester era and nobody can say a bad thing about him. All of the other people who are dissing him on this page are sad and pathetic and need the heads checked.

BOLLOCKS | 8/14/2007, 3:13 pm EST

THIS GUY GOT WHAT HE DESERVED, DIDN’T LIVE TO SEE HIS 58th BIRTHDAY. WHAT GOES AROUND-COMES AROUND, THERE ARE PLENTY OF TONY WILSON’S IN THIS WORLD AND SOON WILL FACE THE SAME FATE!!

The Phantom | 8/14/2007, 6:23 am EST

Cath C, apparently you’re one of those Americans that is ashamed of being one. I highly doubt you took the time to actually read what I had to say. Because I LOVE pissing people like you off, I propose we have a have a Tony Wilson memorial keg party. 5 bucks to get in, and you can gulp all the beer you can handle from Tony Wilson’s empty skull. If someone like you hates me, I must be doing something right. YOU ALSO should be set on fire and thrown from a moving train! Thanks “best behavior,” you’re right. But I’m in desperate need an intervention. My fingers just won’t stop typing!

bez | 8/14/2007, 3:31 am EST

tony wilson was not a pedophile or pervert be careful wot u type in to google you sick fuckers

Cath C | 8/13/2007, 7:31 pm EST

Hey Bucko please don’t think all Americans are like some of the assholes posting comments. New Order are a well respected group over here and a big influence on guys like Moby and The Killers. Tony Wilson RIP.

best behavior | 8/13/2007, 6:43 pm EST

hey phantom, you know how to deal with the infrequent elitist foreigner who thinks his way of life should be forced on everyone else because he is superior? Ignore them. They hate that. These people still want Europe to be top dog and ignoring them as the insignificant waste of time that they are will infuriate them.

The Phantom | 8/13/2007, 6:05 pm EST

You may not like me, but I AM the reason you apologized. The references you make to the blues, gospel, and rock and roll were because I was the one screaming at you about this, as well at the refences to World War 2. Morissey and Polanski say hello! I really don’t give a shit that you apologized. Instead of thinking things through, you shot off your mouth. So check your attitude at the door. I’m pretty sick and tired of a lot your countryman’s provincial, snobby, and condescending attitude. Until I set your straight, you were under the delusion, as many of fellow Brits are that you people invented Rock and Roll. As far “as giving me the satisfaction”, I don’t need permission or any other fucking thing from you. So piss off, and check your history before you shoot off your mouth. And another thing, this Global Warming comment is beyond idiotic. It’s the same mental illness that most of Europe seems to suffer from: that EVERYTHING wrong with the world is somehow America’s fault. Statements like that are a shortcut to thinking. As far as is this oppportunistic pervert, Tony Wilson, is concerned: good riddance.

Bucko | 8/13/2007, 5:13 pm EST

I would like to sincerely apologise to any decent Americans out there (especially those who loved Tony Wilson and the Manchester music scene) if I caused offence by my previous message. Incensed by the idiots posting comments like “good riddance” etc. I reacted in the heat of the moment and implied that all Americans were as aggressive and ignorant as Roman Polanski (presumably not the real one) or Rev Al Bum. Obviously this is not the case although The Phantom doesn’t really do much to convince people otherwise. The English music scene in the late 70s / early 80s could probably have existed quite happily without the influence of the blues, gospel and rock ‘n’roll to be honest. Ironically, considering the Luftwaffe bombed not just London but places like Manchester, Sheffield etc. too, a lot of artists were probably more influenced by the likes of Kraftwerk or Can from Germany. And let’s not forget the impact of reggae and dub from Jamaica at that time. Believe it or not I actually love a lot of music from your country. I’m not even going to mention which bands though as I don’t want to give The Phantom the satisfaction of dismissing them as shit!

The Phantom | 8/13/2007, 1:45 pm EST

No, you edited me. Tony Wilson was IN FACT, a pedophile. He’s dead but this is part of his legacy. Don’t ever censor me again!

The Phantom | 8/13/2007, 1:21 pm EST

I’ll address my comments to the two biggest morons that ever walked the earth. It’s astounding that both of you show up on the same thread, on the same day, at almost the same time. Maybe, on the other hand, it’s not astounding at all. Maybe both of you gentlemen are living together in sin! First of all, “descooterdude”:You think the Beatles, Stones,Who, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin produced disposible crap that no one will remember twenty years from now? You must be the stupidest man alive. What you don’t know could almost fit inside Yankee Stadium!!! And “Bucko the Fucko,” We Americans are a little tired of hearing your wimpy, tired act of how you Brits are supposedly more intelligent than we are. It’s Bullshit! You’re a bunch of whiny snobs who should just shut the fuck up! There would be NO British invasion or ANYy pop music at all, if WE hadn’t created the Blues, Gospel AND Rock and Roll! You should be SET ON FIRE and THROWN from a MOVING TRAIN! Oh yeah, you pansy assed Brits didn’t seem to mind us “starting wars” Americans when you needed help when Hitler was bombing London! WE”RE ALL RESPONSIBLE for Global warming!!! So if you want to be self-congradulatory about these shitty eighties bands and their founder of this insipid crap, Tony Wilson, then have at it. You are are pretty stupid for a so-called erudite Brit! Go ahead, reach for the dictionary on that one. We all know that you need to, you dickhead. Good day to you, sir.

Bucko | 8/13/2007, 9:37 am EST

Further proof that Americans really haven’t got a clue when it all comes down. Stick to what you know best. i.e. starting wars, global warming etc. and leave the music and culture to people who speak “real” English.

descooterdude | 8/12/2007, 4:40 pm EST

Wilson (along with Simon Cowell) will be held responsible for the demise of great British music, like the Beatles, The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zep etc. Together they produced disposable crap that nobody will ever remember in twenty years time. Good riddance!

This Charming Manc | 8/12/2007, 3:16 pm EST

You havent got a fuckin clue. The music this man was involved in inspired so much of todays music. The things he did to bring us Joy Division,New Order,Happy Mondays,The Stone Roses,The Smiths,James,The Charlatans,OMD,The Buzzcocks,808 State and A Certain Ratio. These artists inspired the likes of Fall Out Boy,Moby,Jeff Beck,Foo Fighters,The Artic Monkies,Maximo Park,The Magic Numbers,Oasis,The Pixies,Nirvana and hundreds more. If there were more people like Tony Wilson and less like Simon Cowell we might not have the music charts full of shite.

Suresh | 8/12/2007, 3:11 pm EST

Thank You Tony for all your genius. We have lost a truely great one. The music you helped create lives on forever.

Morrisey | 8/12/2007, 2:07 pm EST

He always liked having us little boys around.

Refrigerator Door | 8/12/2007, 7:15 am EST

(Opens) Still Dead? Still an asshole? Okay. (SLAM)

Rev Al Bum | 8/12/2007, 1:52 am EST

All the music he brought forth sucked cock. Fuck him & Joy Division and Morrisey.

It’s too bad some other asshole signed the Smiths - they sucked too!

Oh yeah….fuck Dianna, the whore of Wales.

Americans rock & rave better than those UK wankers!

CRAIG SMITH | 8/11/2007, 4:25 pm EST

GOD CREATED MANCHESTER HE WAS THE GOD RIP TONY

Roman Polanski | 8/11/2007, 1:03 pm EST

Death=Money to this guy? Then why should I care about HIS death. Fuck him; good riddance. . .the freak.

Matt | 8/11/2007, 7:48 am EST

Truely is a sad day
