For the first time, the all-star live recording of John Lennon’s “Give Peace a Chance” will be made available on the DVD Give Peace a Song, which comes out August 27 in the U.K. The footage was captured on June 1, 1969, the last day of the seven-day “bed-in” Lennon and Yoko Ono staged at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal to protest violence. “Give Peace a Chance,” which includes backing vocals by Timothy Leary, Tommy Smothers of the Smothers Brothers, Petula Clark and members of the local Hare Krishna temple, was recorded at the bed-in, then finished up in the studio and released by the Plastic Ono Band. The DVD will include archival footage from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, outtakes from Lennon and Yoko’s movie of the event and interviews with those at the bed-in, including Yoko. And in other Beatles firsts, Lennon and Paul McCartney have topped the U.S. country-music charts for the first time in twelve years thanks to a cover of “Revolution” by Rascal Flatts.
