Willie Nelson To Headline Marijuana-Legalization Festival in Austin

If you’re looking to do a little charity work in your spare time, perhaps you should consider becoming a marijuana-legalization activist. You can start tomorrow, by attending the Austin Freedom Fest, a pot-promoting charity concert organized by (who else) Willie Nelson, a totally authentic rock star who pulled off a collaboration with Jessica Simpson while retaining every ounce of his cool and, of course, got busted for toting around several pounds of drugs. Nelson is headlining the festival, all proceeds from which will benefit four marijuana-policy-reform groups that seek to stop the war on drugs. “I’d like to see it taxed and regulated and looked upon as nothing more or less dangerous than alcohol or cigarettes,” Nelson said. The seventy-five-year-old rocker no longer smokes cigarettes or drinks alcohol but challenges anyone who claims the pot he’s been smoking for fifty years has made him stupid. “I do a two-hour show every night and remember forty or fifty songs,” the singer said. “So I challenge anyone out there [to remember them as well as I do]. You might tie it, but I doubt you can beat it.”

I’m thinking, stoned of course, that the ratio of pro to con blogs resulting are of, I dunno, something to the effect of: 9 for, 0.5 against pot.
That gives me hope that pot will someday be regarded as a “sociologic”, possibly “health” problem which is how they treat it in Amsterdam.
But treating it as a legal issue, unless you’re a mule, illegally crossing the Mexican/American border carrying bulk, then leave us the fuck alone. Go to your “Happy Hour”, and drink martinis. Great for the liver & driving & penalities & stigma (should you be unfortunate enough to get busted).
Our legislators never have had the balls to follow what they firmly believe, regarding this particular issue: they “all” march-to-the-beat of what their constituents wanna hear. These same constituents, that are hypocrites (’cuz they were wrecked in the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s), ignorantly passing-on their uninformed bias & prejudice towards smoking pot onto their kids, are so clueless with regard to this issue.
Haven’t we moved beyond “The Cleavers”???

maxbom | 8/12/2007, 10:19 pm EST

I’m a medical physician. My speciality is general surgery (TAH-BSO’s, Prostates, Nephrectomies, hips, knees, aneurysms…yadda, yadda, yadda).
Also have advanced degrees in Toxicology & Pharmacology.
Decades have elapsed since I first “got-wrecked” back in Med. School. We all did.
Recreationally, I still toke, but obviously maintaining responsibility while doing so. I.e., the evening before any cases or patients that are to be seen, I abstain. The residual efects of delta-9-THC are > 14 days, metabolite-wise speaking. The metabolites merely stay in your system, going through 1st & 2ndary hepatic-clearence, having NO psycoactive effect. I REPEAT: HAVING NO PSYCHOACTIVE EFFECT!!!

GET IT? You, sanctimonius, naieve, clueless assholes? We will never cease & desist. It’s human nature to relax, to attain “alpha” and at the end-of-the-day, forget the anxieties that tens-of-millions Americans working folk cannot. Benzodiazepines, whatever generation, nor other recently discovered tranqs, are as innocuus as pot. Bottom Line.

As for the economic issue, enough revenue could be raised to help out the 60 million +/- working (and non-working, legal), Americans…not having health insurance!

Government’s a travesty. Do they think we do not have the rationale to figure out what to do with our lives? Are these folks, THAT ignorant?

Goto Lester Greenspoon from Harvard Med. Perhaps he’ll enlighten you idiots that are against taxing & legalizing (or at least, de-criminalizing), reasonable quantities…

Dear King Weed | 8/11/2007, 7:05 pm EST

I can see that pot hasn’t affected your ability to spell!

the one who rocks | 8/10/2007, 4:18 pm EST

All power to Willie!!!
the only downside to smoking weed is eating way too much junk food and waking with a tummy ache!

Mike | 8/10/2007, 3:40 pm EST

Louis Armstrong smoked all the time and he introduced improvisational jazz to the world. He also was something of an activist, like the time he cancelled a tour because of racial B.S.

Hand of Doom | 8/10/2007, 3:03 pm EST

All drugs are for losers.Including Booze, turns people into babbling idiots And the sad thing is its totally accepted and legal so why not legalize marijuana.

High as Balls | 8/10/2007, 2:30 pm EST

Yeah, pot causes the least amount of damage so let’s make it legal. Boy, I’m convinced now. Try to justify all you want but pot is for losers!

mike | 8/10/2007, 12:48 pm EST

During the Carter administration, Willie really did smoke pot at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. It was ON THE ROOF of the White House with a (still unnamed) Senator after dark. Gangsta! Willie For President!!!!!!

King Weed | 8/10/2007, 10:42 am EST

I be smokin the pot for long time now and I also no think it be dangerus. I like Wilie and I enjoy getting high while be listning to the Wilie music. Alchol is much dangrus than weed and i am feelin good about myself eben though I be smokin a lot of the weed. I have the good life withe a good payin job, a desent wife, and i be lovin my weed. Hand of Doom | 8/10/2007, 10:21 am EST

A drug is a drug and they all turn you’re brain into mush after repeated use over time but pot causes the least amount of damage and should be legal. You don’t see people beting their wives because there to stoned.WILLIE ROCKS!!!

One eyed Willie | 8/10/2007, 10:12 am EST

Willie has been using his voice to convey a message for years and I think it’s great he’s putting effort into getting something legal that should have been passed years ago. For all you sharp minded non-smokers, look up the death count caused by alcohol and cigarettes compared to marijuana, end of story.

Hairy Balls | 8/10/2007, 10:11 am EST

But I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned.

CaraElizabeth | 8/10/2007, 1:33 am EST

I heard that Pres. Clinton invited him to the White House, and when no one was looking, he smoked pot outside. Go Willie!

jeff | 8/10/2007, 1:05 am EST

you da man!

Harry Pothead | 8/9/2007, 11:21 pm EST

Right on! Marijuana should be legalized and taxed because of…..ummmm….this charity concert should be cool with……ummm…. I forgot what I was gonna say.

andy | 8/9/2007, 6:58 pm EST

surely it can’t be because the part of the brain that remembers music is the last to go… even alzheimer’s patients remember songs, that’s why they treat patients with music therapy.

ask him to write the songs down on paper instead of singing them and see how far he gets. could be a different story. i’m not saying he’s wrong, i’m saying that memorization of music is the wrong metric by which to measure memory since it lasts longest.

thats right old nelson is still fighting those sonabitches. git your kicks willie, before the shit house goes up in flames.

Its no worse than cigarettes.
The only reason the Government didn’t want to support it because its too easy to grow and They cant tax things that people grow.
