Footage of U2 rehearsing songs from their upcoming album will be included in the forthcoming Daniel Lanois documentary Here Is What Is, which is slated to debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Lanois, the Grammy-winning famed U2 collaborator who produced The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, All That You Can’t Leave Behind and How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (in addition to Bob Dylan’s Oh Mercy and Time Out of Mind) intends to demystify his working process with the feature-length documentary. Shot over eighteen months, the film features footage of Lanois in a Morocco studio with U2 and Brian Eno, plus guest appearances by Sinead O’Connor, Emmylou Harris, Billy Bob Thornton, Brian Eno, Willie Nelson, Garth Hudson and Aaron Neville. All the music in the documentary is by Lanois, whose most recent solo album came out in 2005. Lanois promises the film will provide a deep look into his innermost creativity, and the movie’s description sounds downright trippy: “Lanois’ psychedelic past continues to haunt him throughout the film as the hyper-realism of the in-studio documentation is contrasted by moments of wild fantasia.”

Bono is probably the only rockstar who goes against the grain at the moment. All the other boring celebs and indie-heads of the day are concerned with image, coolness and slagging each other off. We Irish don’t age well, we age disgracefully.

We will castrate you! Luv and kisses, R.S. Hmmm. . . those are the same initials as Rob Sheffield! Now THAT Makes Sense! Zach? on the cover. And. . . RS at RS. I didn’t TOYS R US owned a rock magazine

Oh Jesus | 8/12/2007, 3:38 am EST

“It kind of bothers me when people get on (Bono’s) case for saving the world” Well, Buzz, I’m praying for a mudslide to come and tell Bono to go fuck himself! Your pal, Mike

That’s what the Edge looks like without his makeup.

Hey Wait a Minute | 8/11/2007, 7:07 pm EST

Is that Dennis Hopper?

Brien Comerford | 8/10/2007, 10:43 am EST

I respect U2 but the Australian Band “The Church” blows them away. Their vocalist Steve Kilbey is as eclectic and dynamic as Bono. His causes are animal rights, vegetarianism and planetary peace! Buy “Uninvited Like The Clouds” and you will have faith in “The Church” !!

Good lord — The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby All that You Can’t Leave Behind, and Atomic Bomb –

A producer would kill to make just one of those albums.

We bow in humility, Senor Lanois!

Buzzardo | 8/10/2007, 12:49 am EST

Lanois is a tasty producer. He does make guitars sound pretty gorgeous. His work with U2, Dylan, and Robbie Robertson (and his own LPs) can be a great pleasure to listen to.

As for Bono, it kind of bothers me that people get on his case for saving the world. I mean, who’s forcing him to do it? He’s done more than most of us to help unfortunate people perhaps have a better life. I dare say some people have actually not died because of his work. I can’t criticise that. To attack that kind of work is to attack the whole nature of charity, which none of us should be able to do and still respect ourselves. Do I wish he’d be U2 performer/ singer/ songwriter first and foremost? Well, sure, I guess…

Trex and abandonedstation, uh, that’s Daniel Lanois, not the Edge. Wakey wakey eggs and bakey!!!

T. Rex | 8/9/2007, 5:41 pm EST

Wow, aging really hasn’t been going good for The Edge.

Beatle6769 | 8/9/2007, 5:17 pm EST

Can’t wait for this album, I’m glad to see U2 hasn’t run out of steam. Though it’s hard to wait 3 years for their albums, at least they don’t rush them out!

niecy | 8/9/2007, 5:16 pm EST

I can’t wait to see this. It’ll be cool to see how great music gets made.

Tevin | 8/9/2007, 2:21 pm EST

Actually, he did produce it. Steve Lillywhite just got all the press because it was his first time to go into the studio with U2 in a while. Brian Eno, Flood, Chris Thomas and Jacknife Lee all had their hand in the production of “How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb” as well.

Bono should keep talking and writing great songs. Its unfortunate that certain fans can’t understand someone trying to make a difference. I guess you would rather hear about smack abuse, wife beating, and Bush bashing. Bono should win a Noble Prize and the music is just as good as it has always been.

Joe | 8/9/2007, 2:02 pm EST

This is gonna be some good shit. And the Edge looks better now than back in the day. Heck Adam and Larry too. Now Bono….uhhh….

Andy Ampersand | 8/9/2007, 1:48 pm EST

Actually, Daniel Lanois did not produce ‘How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.’ That would be Steve Lillywhite.

whosays? | 8/9/2007, 12:49 pm EST

That’s Daniel Lanois.

Tom | 8/9/2007, 12:01 pm EST

Hope there’s footage of the Edge telling Bono to shut the fuck up and play music.

Jon | 8/9/2007, 11:49 am EST

Thats Lanois, not The Edge

bayliss | 8/9/2007, 11:44 am EST

What could Billy Bob bring to that table of talent? pics of his ex I guess.

A-Bomb | 8/9/2007, 11:40 am EST

Looking foward to the next masterpiece.

djbryanflash | 8/9/2007, 11:31 am EST

why cant bono just be a rockstar like he was in the good ol days? Instead of being John Lennon of the 21st century.

Franko Tanko | 8/9/2007, 11:30 am EST

and a fine canadian

abandonedstation | 8/9/2007, 11:21 am EST
