As you may have noticed, Rock Daily is following the progress of Todd Haynes’ Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There pretty closely. Last summer our collective minds were blown by eerily spot-on photos of Cate Blanchett as Bob Dylan. We visited the film’s Montreal set, then checked out the first clip to leak from the film, which features Blanchett’s Dylan conversing with Allen Ginsberg, played by David Cross. Most recently, we were treated to a special screening of I’m Not There, where we learned about performances by My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and Sonic Youth. And now we’ve stumbled upon two more photos from the set, of Heath Ledger and Richard Gere in character as Dylan.

so here it is four generations later and the Dylan saga continues.if you think about it its like the yankees red sox, either you love em or you hate em.this movie is border line da vinci code,do you think one will ever know the real Dylan.i can assure you,you won’t find Dylan in this movie.so maybe it should have been called “i’m not here”
asuriwas | 5/9/2008, 5:35 pm EST
Dylan’s role from 65′ to now was never to have a meaning but to be understood. As far as the movie goes here we are again trying to break down and analyze something that cant be understood because most don’t understand the man.And thats all he is,is a man.
Johnny bingo | 3/11/2008, 1:12 pm EST
i dont know why theese people think they have the right to talk about “im not there” in a negative way. Bob Dylan personally gave his blessing and was happy with how it turned out!! If you dont like it then make your own fucking Dylan film.
Gilllian Pert | 3/2/2008, 9:50 pm EST
i just saw the movie and it was pretty shit. Cate blanchett was good though. It doesn’t matter that the characters don’t LOOK like Bob Dylan but most of the characters didn’t even pick up on ANY of his mannerisms/voice or Anything. It was ridiculous, most of the time you wouldn’t even know the film was about Bob Dylan! What the fuck? And what was with the “custody battle” over his children- how is that relevent? It’s like something from a hollywood drama. I just felt it was missing a lot. It would have been great if Cate Blanchett had played Bob the whole way though, or if the other actors had something that you could see Bob Dylan in (again appearance is irrelevent but come on, if you are gunna play Bob Dylan you could atleast study some mannerisms or something???). movie was edited very badly too, not smooth at all just random. portrayed bob as an arrogant, self concious idiot most of the time. Movie was a bit of a joke really and i am very dissapointed because i love bob dylan.
Lolli | 1/23/2008, 8:45 pm EST
Hey y’all,
See the movie! The actors don’t need to LOOK like Bob. It’s just a melange of life and song and the times done in a beautfully artistic way.
New Dylan Fan | 12/20/2007, 6:09 pm EST
Maybe the title should have been “It ain’t me babe”.
New Dylan Fan | 12/20/2007, 5:17 pm EST
I can’t wait to see this movie and hear the soundtrack! Some of you are right on….this is a representation of the man, his life, his music…whether the actors “look” like him or not isn’t the point at all. I am more interested in his personal life, not his public one. That’s what he’s really about.
Denny | 12/4/2007, 3:25 pm EST
The movie was clever and stirring - such an interesting way to explore notions of “identity” and “icon.” The soundtrack works in a parallel manner - from mimicry to reinterpretations, I feel like I rediscover Bob Dylan with every listen.
John Michael | 11/27/2007, 9:25 am EST
I thought the film was aweful from start to finish. Plenty of novel ideas and good attempts at creativity that in the end fall far short. To borrow a quote, “It was both good and original, but the good parts were not original and the original parts were not good.”
hannah | 11/24/2007, 10:51 pm EST
This movie is beautiful and soul-stirring ~ but I love Bob Dylan so maybe my opinion is skewed…
gawain | 11/24/2007, 6:21 pm EST
Wow….just saw the film, and it blew me away. I love the way Haynes threaded the various Dylan songs throughout the storylines in appropriate places. The storylines themselves told differing points of view on various phases of Dylan’s life, and were very well woven together. Cate Blanchette gave one of the best performances of her career playing Dylan’s “middle era”; Heath Ledger and Christian Bales also were very good playing two other personnas. One is left with the feeling that Dylan is at once many people, depending upon which perspective one views him from.
Toby | 11/24/2007, 3:39 pm EST
These comments are missing of the point in a profound sort of way.
Who looks like Bob Dylan? How about a small african american boy? I’m not sure what Todd Haynes was saying when he cast the little boy or when he cast Blanchett, but I think it has something to do with the universality that Dylan’s worked touched upon.
It’s an incredibly visually stunning film. Personally, I think it is a masterpiece, but I’m not sure everyone will appreciate it. Ah well. I am thankful to everyone who contributed to the picture.
ryan | 11/22/2007, 5:50 pm EST
the movie was good, dont ever say bob doesnt know who he is, thats the only person that knows who he is. watch the movie
Tina | 11/21/2007, 11:00 am EST
I think this movie looks awesome. The point is not to look like Dylan but to tell his story (or not). Interpretation, not an exact story.
Jay | 11/5/2007, 6:34 am EST
I agree! They should have used Adam Sandler…he looks so much like Dylan - especially in Reign Over Me! But I’m really looking forward to seeing the movie!
judas | 10/16/2007, 11:27 pm EST
first off, i agree with squares. second off none of you have seen the movie. third if you dont like it make your own damn dylan film. (and i dont know how somebody critizes the actor choice and then suggests adam sandler.)

It’s amazing to me that some of you have such excellent observation skills to point out that a young black kid doesn’t look like bob dylan. you are soooo smart, keep up the good work…………..p.s…they aren’t supposed to look like bob dylan, shit heads,….now go back to listening to the byrds and leave dylan alone.
PeterS. | 9/27/2007, 8:06 am EST
Some of you folks are missing a big point. Bob dylan has has always been vauge and ever changing as a figure and in his work. I would venture to guess he has no clue who he is, why should we? To me, that seems to be the purpose of this film. It explores the ever changing inigma that is Bob Dylan. The second anyone got a glimpse of the man, he changed overnight. As the movie’s biline states, he is no one and everyone all at the same time. It is part of the myth he has sought to create his whole life. It is perfect that many different actors play the different sides or aspects of his personality and
career. Get over knowing the man, and get into his music. All of it. You might be surprised.
AllieJameson | 9/20/2007, 9:33 am EST
YOU FUCKING PEOPLE JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP FOR CHRIST SAKE. STOP TAKING THE WHOLE THING SO FUCKING SERIOUSLY. JESUS CHIRST, JUST BECAUSE OF STUPID LITTLE FACTORS LIKE RICHARD GERE NOT LOOKING EXACTLY LIKE HIM(WHICH HE ALMOST FUCKING DOES), OR NOT LIKING RICHARD GERE FROM ANOTHER MOVIES OR HIS PERSONAL LIFE OR WHATEVER THE FUCK ELSE, YOU CAN’T JUDGE THE WHOLE MOVIE ON THAT. DIDN’T THE GREAT BOB DYLAN ONCE SAY ‘DON’T CRITISIZE WHAT YOU CAN’T UNDERSTAND’? AND AAAAALL YOU FUCKERS DON’T UNDERSTAND SHIT! FUCKERS! AND AS FOR WHOEVER SAID BOB DYLAN WASN’T INTERESTING…….. TRY LISTENING TO ONE OF HIS RECORDS. FUCK!!!!
Adam Sandler and Dylan.... | 9/16/2007, 10:56 am EST

there are some real idiots posting…
did you see the fucking trailer? what does it say? inspired by true stories, fake stories, etc.. and what is the fucking title? I’m NOT THERE! what does that mean to you? it means it’s not a true biopic. It is inspired by Bob Dylan, and it is an homage to Bob Dylan and his great works. But if you are looking to see a movie with every correct details of Bob Dylan, don’t go see the movie. WOW… I love how no one sees that none of these characters are not named Bob Dylan, none of these actors/actresses look like Bob Dylan, and one actress that slightly looks like Bob Dylan is ultimately an ACTRESS. If you understood that then that should give you an idea of what kind of movie it will be, and what an interesting movie it will be.
Gawain | 9/4/2007, 11:53 pm EST
If this movie is anything like the clips and photos I’ve seen, it will be one of the greatest works of art we’ve seen in awhile. Dylan himself is a total enigma. This film will be the same. It’s perfect.
smokey joe | 9/1/2007, 2:12 am EST
You people have nothing better to do? They do not look like Dylan… so what? If you took the time and had the eyes to see what is hidden behind Haynes’ intention with this pic, you would understand that this is not a film about how big of a star Dylan is… but about the fact that he is like everyone of us…

This is blasphemy!!! Im not skeptical when it comes to biopics but this movie idea is the stupidest fucking idea imaginable. There is no recreating BOB DYLAN!!! Its virtually impossible. I saw an adavanced screening of the movie. Kate Blanchet will go to hell for this. she plays a shit DYLAN. As for the rest of the cast, they will all rot in their graves. I hope BOB doesnt watch it as i expect he wont.
Robert A. Zimmerman | 8/30/2007, 4:39 pm EST
Look,if Bob gave the project his approval that makes me even more skeptical. He’s relentlessly perverse and obstructive and his okay could just be a move to let some jackass art fart movie distract public interest from any more pointed examination of his true life’s story. Looks like pretentious crap to me.

I think a biopic of bob dylan would be boring and never live up to any expectations. just watch “dont look back”. This is a movie ABOUT bob dylan, so take it for what it is. Im exited to see it.
mh99121 | 8/26/2007, 5:21 pm EST
iv seen the trailers, how did dylan approve of this. This is a sad, pitiful representation of the artist.

One Who Has Actually Seen It | 8/23/2007, 6:19 pm EST
Saw a screening of the movie. Cate Blanchett is brilliant–she perfectly, astonishingly embodies Dylan’s twitchy body language and vocal mannerisms. Hands down, steals the show. She also looks the most like Dylan–though the point is not to MIMIC Dylan in typical biopic fashion, but to interpret him in a number of different ways. There’s not a single character in the movie named “Bob Dylan.” It is NOTHING like any musical biopic you’ve seen–it has as little in common with “Ray”/”Walk the Line” as with, I don’t know, “Die Harder.” Anyway, doubters, put it to rest. That little clip barely scratches the surface. It’s a stunning movie.
taymckay | 8/21/2007, 2:48 pm EST
those of you who claim to love dylan and are self professed fans of his work, and yet are already criticising this movie for not doing him justice should read up on the project.
dylan himself has put his full support behind this film. if you truly consider yourself what you claim, then trust the man who you admire.

You people are fucking stupid. This was one clip, that may not even be used in the film, out of the hundreds of hours it takes to produce a movie.
That “Knocked Up” director has already finished a parody of music biopics. Every other one that is planned (Iggy Pop, Janis Joplin, etc) is already being made fun of, before production even starts. At least this film doesn’t fall prey to the cut and pasted approach of those others.
Go back to jerking off to your “jackass” movies.

This is the only way to portray Dylan. He’s too monumental, too all-evoking. How often did the message of Christ get lost in the blue-eyed, blond Hollywood imagery(mockery)? Unless Jakob signed on, there was no way to visually portray a viable “young-Dylan.” America (Transformers-America, Rush Hour-America) don’t get caught up in the visual, listen to the script (imagine…a movie about Dylan being more about the words than the image?), listen to the dialogue, try to see the director’s vision of the many faces of Dylan, the many voices and tortured spirits within, the Joan of Arc existing alongside the John Q. Public, the Uncle Sam with the Son of Sam. I eagerly await the night when I’ll get mashed up and try to dissect this on DVD.
Rob | 8/11/2007, 3:59 pm EST
Painful. Cate Blanchett may indeed be a fine actress….and the halloween costume to transform her into Dylan is “at best” visually compelling from a distance….but there’s no human way she can try hard enough to pull off the body language, mannersims and vocal delivery….singing and speaking….as Dylan himself. He was too unique of an artist to have most anyone, male or female, portray with any due justice. Giving here big sunglasses and a cigarette to dangle as formidable “props” is tragically insulting to any fan of Dylan. I’m afraid this film is going to be too god awful to even rent on DVD.

If the clip that’s been released where Cate Blanchett plays Dylan and David Cross plays Ginsberg is any indicator, this movie is going to be absolutely awful. Look at the clip. I mean, that can’t be serious. That is just horrible.

The fact that most of you are complaining about people not looking like Dylan is really sad and stupid. It’s a fantasy, “what if” movie. I think it’s more important to get the essence right, and since none of you have seen the finished product, I don’t know how you can criticize it. That just seems stupid and petty, like little kids trying to get what they want.
