‘American Idol’ for Bands Will Arrive in October

8/8/07, 9:12 am EST

Photo:American Bands

The American Idol-inspired The Next Great American Band, which seeks to find exactly what its title promises and reward that TV-viewer-approved outfit with a record contract, will premiere in October on Fox. The show is produced by 19 Entertainment, the masterminds behind the mega-successful Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, and mirrors the singing competition in several ways: National auditions have been held to narrow down the applicant pool, and judges will choose ten semi-finalists who will perform music from a different genre each week. Also like Idol, the judges (who — along with the show’s host — have yet to be announced) will offer guidance to American voters, who will ultimately decide the winner.

The main dissimilarity between Band (which is still the series’ working title) and Idol is that bands will be allowed to perform original music if they choose to do so. The top three groups will ultimately compete against each other to win a recording contract. Band will kick off with a two-hour episode on Friday, October 19, and follow with weekly hour-long shows every Friday at 8 PM. Though submissions officially closed at the end of last month (groups playing everything from hip-hop to country auditioned), you can still befriend the show’s MySpace before Rock Daily’s Reality Show Recaps start.

Rocket Rumors- rumor has it that there are serious band fights happening.

Cliff Wagner Bluegrass Rocks | 10/25/2007, 5:59 pm EST

Oh Yeah: Rocket sux, they say they have an original sound then sound like every other girl band that can’t play and look just ok. Check out that Bluegrass band Cliff Wagner , not quite lookers , but man can they play. I’m converted!

Angelica | 10/25/2007, 5:09 pm EST

Hey I know that girl Roxy from the Rockets, I know her as -Vanessa- we use to go to A.B. Miller High School together in Fontana, Ca., class of 2002. I just remember that she did alot of Drugs back then, she was cool but coke and weed started to become a habbit especially when she was under pressure, but it didn’t effect her school work that much until we got to Citrus College, in Glendora, Ca. I hope she slowed down, ya know. These things will ruin your life, but I hope for the best all the Bands. Even though she may have leaked info about the show I’m sure not many people will find out about it, hopefully.

NashVegas | 10/25/2007, 3:10 am EST

Does anybody like DMHO? (The big-band.)

Lance | 10/24/2007, 2:26 pm EST

I agree those bimbos do suck I know so many girl groups that sounds and look 10 times better they look like trailor trash, so please stop wasting your time talkiing about those losers, lol. We can do better.

rocket sucks | 10/23/2007, 10:57 pm EST

those girls “Rockets” were GROSS and AWFUL…..why did they spend so much time talking about them?! I’ve seen about 8 million all girl bands who were better

Lolipop | 10/23/2007, 2:33 pm EST

Hey I know huh, I wonder if those rocket girls really do have an inside connection, that’s so funny. I been reading all the post on here for the last week and I thought It was a joke, until I saw the show on Friday and saw them on there, lol. Well, whatever I wouldn’t want to be in a competion like that especially if it’s Rigged, that sucks. I wonder if America really does pick the Winner or not, I’m not to sure about that anymore. But the show is entertaining, it’s cool.

PREDICTABLE BAND IDOL | 10/23/2007, 1:59 pm EST

AMERICAS NEXT BAND, WOW WELL THEY DID TELL US THEY BROKE THE RULES about leaking onformation about them being finalist and in staying at the Palazo out there in Los Angeles AND THEY ARE STILL IN THE COMPETITION, LOL…SO SUCK IT UP THE ROCKETS ARE FINALIST AND IS ON THE SHOW, HA HA…IT ALWAYS PAYS TO HAVE AN INSIDE PLUG WORKING FOR THEM IN ORDER TO WIN THE COMPETITION, YA KNOW. LOOKS LIKE A ONE BAND SHOW. BESIDES, WHO ELSE WOULD GET AWAY WITH LEAKING INFO ON AMERICAN IDOL/ BAND? NOBODY BUT THE ROCKET GIRLS, SORRY FOR THE REST OF THE FINALIST YALL ARE GOING TO LOSE, WATCH AND SEE. LATER DUDES!!!!

label-mate rock! | 10/22/2007, 2:53 pm EST

Rocket are awesome! Really sweet, good girls who bust ass! yay! so happy for them :) hope great things come out of this opportunity for them!

stevevo420 | 10/20/2007, 10:27 pm EST

light of doom , now there is the future of music.. sign them now.at 13 and 14 they rule..cant wait to see whats next..

Original Musician | 10/20/2007, 8:41 pm EST

They’re making a television show like all the rest. It’s not really designed to present the best new music, just entertainment.
The groups that need a reality check will get one. Watch for a band called Naked Mole Rats singing
A Blacker Shade of Dark. They will be totally disgusting!

Byrdfan | 10/20/2007, 2:28 pm EST

I agree with Tony and writer about Geoff Byrd of “The Likes of You”. They didn’t get enough air time last night, but watch them Friday. He is fantastic! Seen him live several times and always amazing.

ellie | 10/20/2007, 1:48 pm EST

oh and by the way… even if she did leak anything, it doesn’t mean that they have an unfair advantage becase of it. they will win based on their talent and originality - and thats it.

ellie | 10/20/2007, 1:45 pm EST

ok…. please tell me where this was reported that they leaked info. because so far the only info i have seen leaked is crap other people are posting and then just blaming it on rocket. i have yet to see any info about them actually publicly saying anything. and they focused on them so much during the promos - it was obvious they were going to make it.

so to all you a–holes who are saying they shouldn’t be allowed to preform blah blah blah… i have one thing to say to you: “fcck you. a single member of rocket has more talent in their pinky toe than any of you chumps.”

eat it btches….

cheram | 10/20/2007, 3:01 am EST

Tonight I watched a band who I thought was very talented get rejected by judges who are obviously incompetent. No judgment! The band was porthmont (or close to it). I thought they rocked and I hope a producer/agent realizes their talent…

humbleindeed | 10/20/2007, 1:47 am EST

The Clark brothers put every one to shame.

Chevoughn | 10/19/2007, 11:19 pm EST

I have seen DOT DOT DOT several times. This is a great band. I hope they go all the way.

kk | 10/19/2007, 2:44 pm EST

I wonder if the producers are going to bend the rules for that group “rocets” after leaking information about the show. If so they must have an inside plug, Well we will see, Good Luck to all the finalist.

Northmont-- hands down | 10/18/2007, 11:31 pm EST

well I live in dayton ohio and a band called northmont was on the news as one of the finalist in this competition they are absolutely amazing they have been featured in over 150 placements on shows for mtv and other stations check them out on myspace seriously trust me they are good….

humbleindeed | 10/17/2007, 6:50 pm EST

they brothers are very talented people who deserve a chance. i hope they go far.

Ruthy | 10/17/2007, 2:40 pm EST

Yes, duh, they do have rules. When an contestant exposes that they are finalist and where they are going to live during the show, before the show airs, this is a Big No No, come on now… They usually disqualify the band or the person in the competition, it has happend b4. I just dont see why thay decided to leak info, when all they had to do is wait and perform like the other contestants, ya know.

Ruthy | 10/17/2007, 1:43 pm EST

Doesn’t American Idol have strict rules about contestants revealing information about the show before it even airs?
I thought they did. It seems like alot of people are aware of things about the taping of the show that they shouldn’t. My cousin tried out for american idol 2 years ago and was one of the finalist and I remember the contest rules was very strict about leaking information but I guess American Next Great Band is a little lenient in this situation. Cheers!

Producer/Nashville | 10/17/2007, 9:27 am EST

sorry about the typo’s….. enough said.

Producer/Nashville | 10/17/2007, 9:08 am EST

Sure it’s spinoff. So is everything else on TV. So why not give hard working talented artist a shot. We may struggle through some of the early competition but in the end it will produce interest as big as American Idol. The creators are not stupid. Much research. Now after saying that, about the bands…Fan base will determine the winner. Bottom line with talent of course. Do not exc use the unseen hand of the executives choice. The top 3, let me be the first to predict. “The Clark Brothers”, Geoff Byrd, Rockets. In the business for many years and have produced many great artist. The winner…..The Clark Brothers. Fan base will be the ultimate decider. Ashley Clark toured with Carrie Underwood as her backup singer and fiddle player. Carrie shared her stage with him at times letting him shine. Also tap into a short film documentary titled “Sunday Dreamer” based on the true story of Ashley Clark, written and produced by leading Hollywood short film exec. They were onto something already. If anyone deserves the title, these young men do. They are refreshing and inspiring. Raised in the mountain of West Va, the hale from a family of 11 brothers and sisters. The father is a traveling evangelist and is the one responsible for teaching each child to play an intrument. I’m just gonna sit back and watch. Let me add, probably the most humble spirits I’ve ever witnessed in the music industry.

Bridgette | 10/16/2007, 6:36 pm EST

Who is talking about Chicago? What was said was about that bimbo group the rocket, who spoiled the suprise for the finalist and the where taping the show, it was selfish of them because, what about the other contestants, they didn’t do that, this does not usually happens, but anyway American Idol ROCKS!!!!

B-Dog | 10/16/2007, 4:54 pm EST

I know the Chicago band that this person is speaking of and let me tell you they are incredible. I can not wait for them to do Chicago right. Go get em …

BRIDGETTE | 10/16/2007, 3:07 pm EST

IM SO WITH YOU ON THAT WE ARE HERE TO ENJOY THE NEW BANDS COMING OUT, BUT I ALSO AGREE THAT IF A BAND IS GRANTEED A CHANCE OF A LIFETIME, DONT BLOW IT BIG TIME BY SPREADING RUMORS THAT YOU ARE GOING TO BE A FINALIST ON THE SHOW AND ESPECIALLY THAT YOU ARE GOING TO BE STAYING AT THE PALAZZO, NOW EVERYONE KNOWS, IT MAKES IT LOOK LIKE ITS RIGGED OR SOMETHING AND ITS NOT, YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE ETHICS BEHIND A COMPETITION THERE ARE SO MANY TALENTED PEOPLE IN THIS COMPETITION, AND IT WAS VERY TACKY HOW THIS INFORMATION GOT OUT BECAUSE OF ONE PERSON. I JUST DONT GET IT, GOOD LUCK TO THE REAL FINALIST!!!!!

Chicago bring it home!!! | 10/15/2007, 10:23 pm EST

Who cares what this show is about or how bad u think it/or the band will suck…. These ppl where choosen and that is prize enough. I know a band that has made it and they can preform anything….and the music they have written is awesome in it’s self. No matter what the outcome…they are just happy to have had the chance to experience this. They know who they are…..We love and support u to the fullest!!!

P.S. U all have no idea what is about to hit your eyes and ears… I will be back to see you all talking about this great band!

Mercedes | 10/15/2007, 2:00 pm EST

The only way these ‘rocket’ losers will be on American Next Band as finalist is if they got special privilages, which I think the producers of the show is very serious when it comes to leaking confidential information about the show and the contestants. On another note, I saw the preview of the show, it looks great I can’t wait until it airs.

cacloy | 10/14/2007, 9:48 am EST

Tony, I’m so with you about Geoff Byrd. No contest!!

Big Jay | 10/13/2007, 11:03 am EST

The Muggs! They Got This! I’ve followed these guys… They rock, They’re Real!

Rose | 10/12/2007, 5:15 pm EST

It seems like its always an issue with at least one contestant each year legally, In this case its an Entire Band that crossed the guidelines of this competition. They/She are just plain dumb to leak information b4 they even move in and b4 the show airs. Contestants of Americas Next Great Band is not suppose to tell that they are in the Finals, let alone where they going to be living and taping the show. Hopefully this doesn’t get out to too many people, which it probaly has but it just sucks, but any way I can’t wait 4 the show to premiere, It’s always a bad apple in the bunch. CHEATERS NEVER PROSPER…MAY THE BEST BAND WIN!!! P.S. Mr. Rzeznik from the Goo Goo Dolls is soooooo cute.

Huh????? | 10/11/2007, 5:48 pm EST

OH MY GOOSH, HOW IN THE WORLD DID THIS INFORMATION GET OUT ABOUT THE FINAILIST AND WHERE THEY ARE GOING TO BE LIVING DURING THE TAPING OF THE SHOW? THAT SPOILS AND DEVALUES THE SHOW, AS LONG AS I HAVE BEEN WATCHING AMERICAN IDOL I NEVER HEARD OF A CONTESTANT JUST BLOWING IT LIKE THIS, DIDN’T THEY KNOW THE RULES AND GUIDELINES OF BEING A CONTESTANT ON THE SHOW? THAT’S JUST CRAPPY, I WONDER WHAT SIMON COWELL WOULD THINK ABOUT THAT…

ellie | 10/10/2007, 10:25 pm EST

i actually know two of the bands that are on this show. and i personally know the band rocket. to everyone saying that its not fair that they leaked it i want to know why does it matter? they are seriously talented girls and one of my favorite bands. so the fact that they made it is only a testament to how great a band they are. i just feel bad for the other contestants cause they don’t have a chance against these girls!

*Infamous* | 10/9/2007, 1:01 pm EST

Wow everyone is talking about how that group leaked information about the show and them being finalist and where they were going to stay during the taping. I guess they wanted people to recognize them before so they could win but that’s cheating, now its no suprise at all. Aren’t there rules to the competition? Im pretty sure she knew that before telling, that was stupid. Anyway I love AMERICAN IDOL and one group is not going to spoil it 4 me, hopefully…

brandie | 10/8/2007, 8:28 pm EST

The Muggs are going to “Bring it Back” to Detroit. They are going to rock your faces off!

RJ | 10/8/2007, 6:08 pm EST

THATS STILL NOT FAIR ITS SO MANY TALENTED PEOPLE IN THIS COMPETITION, THAT HAVE WAITED FOR THIS MOMENT AND ONE GROUP CANT KEEP THERE MOUTH CLOSED, THATS BAD. WHETHER THEY ARE NICE OR NOT THERE ARE RULES,AND I KNOW AMERICAN IDOL/ BAND IS BETTER THAN THAT.

RJ | 10/8/2007, 5:52 pm EST

WOW, thats crazy why would a contestant do that? Now its not going to be a supprise when this group comes on TV. That is terrible.

K | 10/8/2007, 5:50 pm EST

That band is calle Rocket and I haven’t seen them personally say anything about their inclusion on the TV show, although, I saw them on the commercial for the show, so we’ll see if they’ve made it or not. They’re a great band and really nice girls, met them after a show they played a couple of months ago. Another band that might’ve made it is Tres Bien who are from Florida and are a great band. I’m not sure if this show will actually showcase legitimate bands/material, but its sounds interesting nevertheless. We’ll see when it premieres in a couple of weeks.

AMERICAN NEXT GREAT BAND | 10/8/2007, 5:48 pm EST

THAT IS SO WRONG THE FINALIST SHOULD NOT BE ALOWED TO STAY IN THE COMPETITION IF THEY LEAK INFORMATION THATS SO WACK. THATS NOT FAIR TO THE OTHER CONTESTANTS AND AMERICA.

I can definately tell you that the Clarks will be the band to beat. They can do anything and everything–and all ashley has to do is sing a roung of American Woman, or his song “The Kid” and they might as well end the show. I would say that their only set back is that due to them being so eclectic they would be hard to peg and definately not “genre” radio family. They’d play em on every station. I’ll be voting for the boys!!! They rock!!!! Here’s to better time than those good ole’ ranch days! HA!

You guys may be surprised… There are tons of “undiscovered” bands out there that had a chance to send in a package to the producers to get on the show. Not everyone can quit their jobs to tour for exposure. And the groups can play original material on this show. I can’t wait to see it myself!

A band titled “The Clarks” is already making the buzz to be the next Great American Band. You can catch a glimpse of the lead on myspace music, “Ashley Clark”. From what I hear they’re the band to beat.

Somewhere I feel that Simon Cowell is already viewing the tapes and picking up the (generic commercial appeal) “rejects”, putting them together to manufacture the next Il Divo - Hopefully he’ll call them “Il Conceived” - coz that’s what this show is.

Still, I’d give it a watch - only coz I’m hoping against hope that some band that sounds like RHCP or Queens Of Stone Age will make the top 10 and blast out Paula Abdul songs at 110 decibels (and in tune, the way she could never muster) - and still sound incredible! :D (of course, that’s the week they’ll be sent home by America and people who think rock music was created by Bon Jovi.)

hell, its probably more legit then a record label picking crap for us to listen too…

to make this show legit the judges should be

Keith richards
stevie nicks
ozzy osbourne

now thats one hell of a judging panel, all have been on some of the greatest bands in history, all three of them are rock legends. Keith can not be killed by convential weapons, stevie nicks burned a hole in her nose with cocaine, and ozzy well he pissed on the alamo…I would watch this show just for them three

I agree with everyone so far…but, I will still watch this, just like I watch Idol every year. I know the music is terrible, but it’s good TV.

VeryPleasantNeighbor | 8/9/2007, 6:17 pm EST

Chili,

The average listener doesn’t want (or appreciate) “ambitious,” “multi-talented” bands. Any bar band can change genres (believe me; I’m in one), especially with a week to prepare.

There will be a Daughtry/Nickelback-esque band, a Death Cab/Shins-esque band, and either an emo or a country band in the finale (since even American Idol must realize that the emo backlash is beginning). Not that there’s anything wrong with The Shins, but their genre is very easy for a “sensitive,” attention-seeking, minimally talented band to play.

Hmmm, are any of the people who’ve commented, musicians working in a band? Personally, although I’m not a musician, I reckon it’s a great opportunity for ambitious groups to get recognised - and the format appears to favour multi talented groups.

Cheesecrop | 8/9/2007, 7:11 am EST

You cannot find the next great rock band on a tv show. Certainly not some overproduced pile of crap that they will unveil to get maximum rating points on the Neilsen charts.

patsyjack | 8/9/2007, 4:52 am EST

there are no real bands out there anymore
either they are put together by a record label or they are sitting at home seeing how many hits they get on their myspace

B | 8/8/2007, 11:17 pm EST

I have no confidence in the American public to choose a great band, but at least this show has the possibility of some good bands in the early rounds.

This is shit.

popular | 8/8/2007, 5:26 pm EST

I doubt many musicians from our time will be remembered like ones from the past 500 years ago or so. For whatever reason, our idea of popular is so skewed, it makes me wonder just how stupid a person has to be to think the crap the music industry force feeds us is any good. It should be called the ‘looks good while dancing and lip syncing’ industry. Or ‘looks good in black eyeliner makeup’ industry.

You know I’d love to see someone like Wilco go on there and dominate. The general public has no idea who they are.

At the very least an interesting artist may play early on before getting the sheeps’ boot.

The next great american band is the band who will be able to write songs like “welcome to the jungle”, “today” , “Jane says” or “ain’t talkin’ about love”.

And all over Hollywood... | 8/8/2007, 3:36 pm EST

…hundreds of would-be “producers” are indignant, “I had that idea FIVE years ago!”

meglovesrs | 8/8/2007, 3:20 pm EST

i agree with the first comment. It’s just another chance for a shit faced talent competition to MAYBE sell some albums ONLY if every band member is hotter than hell.

I could’nt agree more with all of you,,,,,but,,,,,is this stuff meant to be seriouse?? (sp?),

I tend to watch these kind of shows just to see how bad they really are!! It helps to self medicate (wink wink) and eat a bowl of captain crunch, if ‘ya know what I mean!!!!

I’m sure that the winner of this show will make Matchbox 20 look hardcore.

Somewhere In The Middle | 8/8/2007, 11:52 am EST

Great, another shit show that will be the source of even more shitty music. I envy deaf people.

Stuporfly | 8/8/2007, 10:53 am EST

Doesn’t popular music already suck enough?

HN | 8/8/2007, 10:40 am EST

God, just what we need, another generic Daughtry or Fall Out Boy like band.
