rolling stone used to be known for their magazine covers. i’ve noticed a trend in the last few years that almost every cover looks the same. The artist the cover story is about in front of a white background. It’s boring. I go to an art school and have several friends who are photography majors, any one of which could take a better cover photo for you.

Also the boy was part of the highest grossing album last year. Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t. Maybe this will explain the phenomenon of High School Musical to an audience that considers any music created by anyone under the age of 30 to be insignificant.

He’s a good singer, a good actor, a good dancer, and very attractive. He’s the Hollywood trifecta, and considering how his career has soared (success of High School Musical, landing the role in Hairspray, in talks for a remake of Footloose..), he’s going to be around for a while. So, get over it!

He’s 19 (not a tween, and it’s not just 14 year old girls lusting after him. Trust me on this one). Yes, his movie premiered on the Disney channel but that’s not what the real news is. The real testament to his ability is that he landed the role of Link Larkin opposite big names like John Travolta & Queen Latifah in Hairspray. And he was amazing, too! So, fine, High School Musical isn’t your thing. Get over it! Shouldn’t you be able to recognize talent when you see it?

Rolling Stone is just staying ahead of the game by recognizing a rising star. If he crashes and burns later, that’s fine. But, like the recent Vanity Fair cover featuring Shia LeBouf, a magazine needs to stay ahead of the game by featuring the stars of tomorrow.

Zac Effron is a rising star… he has been amazing in both hairspray and high school musical! he has tried hard and deserves it. he is a beautiful guy!

It’s ok for RS to have some variety in their covers now and again, and there will always be some collection of people who will take issue with what RS chooses for its next cover. Think about it – if it wasn’t Zac Efron, people would be bitching about MCR or Fall Out Boy being on the cover. I’m sure a decidely more ‘indie’ or ‘alternative’ personality a la The White Stripes or Ryan Adams will grace the next cover.

That said, I think RS made a mistake here. One thing this magazine’s known for is its memorable, and more importantly unique cover designs… and this shoot looks like it was lifted straight from Seventeen itself. Additionally, I don’t think I’ve heard the name ‘Zac Efron’ burning up any type of news headlines recently… so it must be a really slow news week to warrant this guy making the cover. If he was chosen because of his part in Hairspray, why not a spread cover with more of the cast, ie Travolta, Pffiefer (did I even spell that right?), or the actress who played the lead? Long story short, RS pulled a quick fix which, while it will sell issues and be effective, shows that even a 30+ year-old publication like them can get lazy sometimes.

However, I work in the mag industry and they are working 6 months in advance, and this issue finished at least 2 months ago (yes, that’s how long it takes to print millions of copies!). And, frankly, they probably had this cover tested to see how well it would do, not to mention that everyone is TALKING about him.

What makes a great cover? Someone recognizable, someone talented (which he is, you losers, even if you refuse to give him a chancec), and someone who is in the news. And he is IN THE NEWS. I

Plus, High School Musical 2 is coming out next Friday. Trust me, this was a very smart choice on their part. Whether you like the cover or not, news-wise its a great cover because he’s in 2 huge movies right now and definitely getting talked about all over the place.

I’ve been buying RS since high school (80s) and loved the covers of Billy Idol, Eurythmics, U2, etc. As I’m sure the generation before me creamed themselves over Janis, Jimi, and John.

But a mag with this much history has to mix it up to stay relevant and on the newsstands.

I actually think it’s refreshing to not see an old coot on the cover.

ugh i hate people who say negative comments about someone just because they are jealous. so maybe zac efron isn’t exactly rollingstone material, but it’s no reason to cancel your subscription to the magazine. it’s just one cover. i mean britney spears has been on the cover before and she is definitely not what rollingstone readers listening to, but no one complained because she was half naked on the cover.

Another thing, having a nice body does not mean someone does drugs, just like having nice hair doesn’t make a guy gay. These people have stylists and trainers. They look however they need to look to land roles and that’s that.

Whoever said that music by anyone under 30 is insignificant needs to fuck off. Age does not make good music, talent does.

Let me try to summarize and alleviate the situation here, if I may. A cover like this clearly polarizes a readership. It’s not a “normal” cover by any means for Rolling Stone, so most readers hate it and rant on posts like this.

It’s a newsworthy cover since Hairspray just hit theatres and since High School Musical 2 is coming soon. However, I think there are better ideas for a cover than Zac Efron.

Maybe the editors were lost for ideas. How about a political cover then? If I remember correctly, there hasn’t been one this year yet. No one can really complain about that, since the issues are “boring but important.”

In my opinion, I don’t like it. I hate this type of pop culture, but Rolling Stone has been covering it since its inception. A lot of posts have said the magazine “ain’t what it used to be.” If you think about it, John Lennon was on the first cover, and he was as big of a pop star as anyone in 1967. The pop culture definition has changed, however, and a magazine has to adapt to those changes over 40 years.

I’m as disappointed as anyone this douchebag’s on the cover, but it’s just a cover (who scratches themself like that?). But the article itself will only be 4-5 pages long, and all other content will be sound as a pound. Take it easy, everybody.

first and foremost, the artist has to be WILLING to talk to you. And trust me, artists are getting picket and pickier these days. If any of those got an offer from another magazine they like more or think will make them look BETTER, they’re gonna talk exclusively to them.

Not to mention “recent” albums isn’t recent enough. In the media world, your album better be coming out in the very near future AND be highly HIGHLY anticipated

You’re right: I haven’t heard of Zac Efron. I don’t think that means I’m living under a rock just because I didn’t see Hairspray and High School Musical. I saw the previews for each of those movies, and they didn’t appeal to me – simple as that.

Yes, I said news “week” because to the best of my knowledge, Rolling Stone is a *weekly* magazine, with a different *weekly* cover. True, they probably did plan this cover (let alone the entire issue itself) for months in advance, but that doesn’t mean I agree with him being on the cover.

Hairspray and High School Musical 2 are two “huge” movies? Compare the hype given to both those movies to other summer movies like The Simpons Movie, Harry Potter, or even the anticipation for Superbad, and then tell me how “huge” those two movies are. That’s not to say that HSM 2 and Hairspray are bad movies, nor is that meant to say Zac Efron is a horrible talent. What it’s meant to say is that these movies don’t attract as many people as other summer movies – they’re not “blockbusters”.

Again, and maybe I am truly “out of it”, but I really haven’t heard any huge news headlines about Zac Efron or High School Musical 2. As for solely the cover itself, face it: it’s a lazy shoot. Working in the magazine industry as you say you do, you should know that one of the key parts of any magazine cover is to present a unique and attention-grabbing image that will inspire people to buy it over other magazines. Rolling Stone’s been known for this: the Janet Jackson 90s cover, the recent 40th anniversary Summer of Love cover, practically any of the covers memorializing a fallen personality. I look at this cover and I see just another part of a teen collage that includes Seventeen and Teen Beat. How is this attention-grabbing to someone who knows nothing about Zac Efron (and yes, there are people out there like that)? Because the dude has an attractive belly button?

Believe me when I say that while Zac Efron could’ve been featured in the issue, it was a lazy move to put him on the cover. A boring cover, at that.

I do admit there may be an overabundance of “tween covers” as you guys put it, but hey I thought they counterbalance it a lot with The Police, Amy Winehouse, Guns and Roses, The White Stripes as well as movie covers. Plus they want tokeep the readership going on into the next few decades, so they do have to appeal to a wider generation of readers. I do hope that they give us more darker backgrounds and a better variety though. Besides, I read the magazine for the Articles, not the covers. (M.I.A. in this issue cool.!)

I say this cover sucks. So what I’ll do is, when the magazine comes in the mail, I’ll rip the cover off, throw it away, and put the magazine next the the toilet where it always goes. Rolling Stone has to sell copies. I don’t always agree with their covers, but they have some great content

Hands, how am I a “legend in my own mind.”? I said nothing of the sort.. I was just pointing out the obvious: it takes a lot of work to put a magazine cover together, and a lot of thought goes into both the audience of the magazine and the POTENTIAL audience of the magazine, as well as whether the star is willing to be photo’d and interviewed for the mag.
At the end of the day, the editors of RS looked to each other and said “would people read this? would WE?” and apparently the answer is “yes”.. all of the bitching in the world won’t change the fact that Zac is blowing up, and he has a lot of potential to be huge. And isn’t it interesting that RS is putting him on the cover? Don’t you want to see what will happen to this guy in the future? If he crashes and burns, sure, RS will have regretted this cover. But if he becomes the next, say, John Travolta or Kevin Bacon, then RS will be revered for recognizing a young talent early in the game.

Tequila Mockingbird: you make good points, though I disagree that people aren’t talking about Zac and HSM2/Hairspray. They *are* huge movies because… Hairspray had the biggest opening weekend of a musical, ever. I never said it was a blockbuster like The Simpsons or Harry Potter, but those movies are predictable blockbusters. Doesn’t a movie have merit anymore unless it makes $300M? The summer’s a bad time for the movie industry because the huge movies make tons of money and the other movies are overshadowed, but Hairspray is doing pretty well. In 2 1/2 weeks it’s made $82M domestic (boxofficemojo.com). And High School Musical 2 is anticipated to be huge because High School Musical became a phenomenon last year. Isn’t the statistic that it was the best-selling record of 2006? Yea, I’m pretty sure I read that.
And hey, the cover isn’t AMAZING or edgy like a lot of RS have been in the past, but it’s great because it hilights a bright young star.
As far as the “boring” cover, it IS subdued.. however, there’s also a lot of subtlety in it. Like, he’s wearing a white t and the cover is white.. all this blank space REALLY makes his tan skin stand out, and brings the viewer’s attention right to his body (which ain’t bad, let me tell ya). And you can’t appearl to everyone with a cover, but this one is attention-grabbing because a) he’s attractive, b) the contrast of his skin vs. white space, c) the cover line- “The New American Heart Throb”.. it’s not amazing, but it’s definitely a very interesting line that’s bound to catch attention. If anything, RS is telling you- “here’s a new kid. he’s hot. he’s loved. maybe you should be paying attention to him too”

I’m a 14-year old girl. I think the Gn’R cover was awesome. But Zac Efron? Am I the only teen girl in the world who prefers Gn’R over Zac? I really, really hate to see RS going in the same direction as all those stupid girly teen magazines. what the heck happened to the world?

Here’s the litmus test — if I’m reading Rolling Stone in public am I proud or embarrassed if someone sees the cover? No doubt this is one that stays hidden. I understand the whole teen “commerce” perspective — I also understand that RS really doesn’t understand their core audience. You can’t be everything to everyone — you’re writing about credible artists or you’re wallowing in celebrity shit. Like porn, I know it when I see it. And this is it.

Honestly, do any of you know Zac personally that you should be the judge of whether or not he should be on the cover of this magazine. Rolling Stone is about music and what’s going on with it. Also, it’s not just singing talent that he has. He is also a smart guy, so don’t go saying he’s JUST some actor with a hot bod because he isn’t. Just because his first big break was High School Musical or Summerland doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve a fair chance. He’s worked into this business just like anyone else and he’s worked hard to get the position that he’s in. I’m sure the White Stripes played in bars too and some people probably hated them are first, but now they are a classic.

I’m not just a young girl who’s lusting over Zac Efron. I enjoy the classics too like Led Zeppelin, Kansas and even Styx, but once in a while you do want something new that you have to learn about. Not everyone these days is just a teen on drugs or just good looking. Look inside before you judge.

I don’t see readership uproar and people saying they’re going to cancel their subscriptions over the cover with Rose McGowan and Rosario Dawson skimpily clad in nothing but bullets — which has even less to do with “authentic music” or “the roots of RS” than Zac Efron.

Yet, as soon as there’s a cover with a boy as a sex object instead of a girl, people want to say that it doesn’t subscribe to the purpose of the magazine. If you’ve posted a serious complaint, you should either be getting more upset about the Grindhouse cover with Rosario and Rose because it has absolutely nothing to do with music or you should admit you’re just finding excuses for a sexist double-standard. (Same goes for the not-so-subtly homophobic posts, really.)

The reason we are objecting to this cover is because this magazine is supposed to be about music, and I am sorry but Rolling Stone putting Panic at the Disco, Fall Out Boy, and Zack Efron on the cover…this is not coverage of music or talent. We’re ostracizing him because he represents THE DEATH OF MUSIC. Let’s back up a bit, Zac Efron was the star of High School Musical, a made-for-tv film geared for 9 to 13 year old kids. The soundtrack peaked at NUMBER ONE on the Billboard Charts. The songs are made by balding fifty-year-old producers and lip-synced by the actors from the film. If our youth are spoon-fed conglomerate piles of shit like High School Musical, and magazines like Rolling Stone slap their little whores on the front cover of their magazines, we have a pretty grim fate for the future of music.

After sifting through a good 1/4 portion of these comments, I think it would be safe to say the following:
musicals have music in them.
Although Zac doesn’t have the capability of singing the way The Who does or the way Pink Floyd does, I feel safe to say that his musical singing ability is quite good. In fact, better than ‘quite good’.
He’s going to (supposedly) be doing a remake of Footloose after this, and it strikes me that he’ll be something like a John Travolta in the next few years. (Although maybe not as good as Travolta…)
I think Rolling Stones is going to start an appreciation for different TYPES of music now.
Does anyone on here realize that there’s other types of music other than:
1) Rock
2) Alternative Rock (or Alternative)
3) Screamo

I was looking at the “illustrious” cover subjects of the past and came across everything from the kings and queens of teen pop (Britney, BSB, N’Sync, etc.) to actors who have nothing to do with music whatsoever, or marginal talent (Jessica Alba, Jenny McCarthy). Yet my greatest find is akin to two female Zac Efrons, The Olsen Twins! Because when I think of quality music, I think Ashley and Mary-Kate. So all you haters realize that pop culture is what sells and when they decided to put Zac Efron on the cover they might as well have robbed a bank, because I gaurantee this will be one of the biggest if not THE biggest selling issue of the year. And on a final note, who was last weeks cover, Guns N’ Roses? WTF? And they’re celebrating an album that came out 20 years ago? Yeah, RS is on top of music alright, please, Axl is the male Courtney Love except without the new album. I 100% agree that it’s time to put someone under 40 who’s relevant to today’s music and pop culture scene and that’s exactly what RS has done!

Look…RS is a business, and the objective of any business is to sell its product, and in this case, its product is a magazine. RS is going to do what it needs to do to market to the consumer. Besides, hasn’t the zine been known to feature [arguably] somewhat controverisal covers? That’s why it’s been around for as long as it has. Yes, Zac may have a rather young female fanbase–admittingly, my best friend and I are fans at 28 and 27–the boy is 19-years-old, and though he appreciates all his fans, of any age, he’s going to want to appeal to more than just little girls. And if gracing the cover of RS with his shirt halfway off is the way to do it, whatever, the magazine editors/photographer probably chose that photo from the shoot anyway. I just wonder how much was airbrushed to make him look so cut.

The last thing I’m going to say is, “WOW!” Some of these posters have their heads stuck so far up their asses that they actually call Zac Efron “a musician.” After giving my fair, unbiased, complex analysis over this debate, you still don’t get it. I have realized that my, and many other people’s opinions don’t matter at all because, to quote, “Zac iss ssooooooo hot.” So, I took the liberty of looking up the word “musician” in the dictionary:

zac efron does not lip synch. what i heard was that his voice was just not as strong as they wanted it to be so they had another person come in to do (very strong) back up vocals. however in hairspray and high school musical 2, he sings all of his own vocals. he has been seeing 2 vocal coaches and training extensively. lay off the kid it was not his fault. and it least its him a good role model minus some trainwreck celebrity. think before you type people. seriously.

People need to realize that it’s a good thing that Zac is on the cover on Rolling Stone. People say he doesn’t deserve to be on here because he doesn’t even sing in HSM [the thing he's most remembered for] but in the artical he talks about not wanting to be known as “Troy” and talks about not singing in HSM. Zac proved himself in Hairspray and hopefully will continue to do so in the rest of his choices. He’s trying to break away from his Disney Channel image and we should accept that and give him a chance to do it. Nothing but a bunch of camel crap the editors decide to shove down our throats. What happened to the actual artists?

I am shocked, appalled, and greatly disturbed to see that Rolling Stone had even considered putting this character on the cover of this issue, much less actually going through with that shameful idea. I saw nothing even mentioning the 10 year anniversary of Jeff Buckley’s death anywhere in RS this past May, but RS finds it appropriate to give credit to a teen “heartthrob”. When was it RS’s job to report on that issue to begin with? Stick to what you started out with; to your vision when this magazine started and John Lennon was placed on the cover: musicians with TALENT. There’s something that doesn’t get appreciated these days.

Zac Efron is this Generations John Travolta. I think its awesome to have such a talented celeb my own age. I take issue with those who say that this was either the worst issue or worst cover of RS ever. I was glad to read about John Edwards, the Crossroads festival and the FSU. And the Zac article was interesting enough (lay off Matthew McConaughey, Zac. If the man doesn’t want to wear a shirt, he doesn’t have to).
